Five signs you should be working for yourself BY LIZ RYAN  FORBES

For years my workmates told me I should start a business. “Eww! No!” was my answer. I changed the subject. I couldn’t imagine working for myself. I was a Corporate Sally through and through. Give me a desk! Give me an office! I’ll blow your mind — I just need a job description and a business card. I thought those things represented security. My boss forced me to start consulting. We had a few tussles over the years but he was a genius mentor. A business owner down the street called my boss one day and asked him to recommend an HR consultant, and my boss recommended me. Of course, I was no HR consultant. I was a blue-suited HR manager with a notepad in my hand. My boss said “Just go down the street after work today and ask this guy what he needs.” I was terrified. My boss even set my consulting rate for me — fifty bucks an hour. I thought of ways to spend the extra money while I was walking down the street with my notepad. I met the business owner. He

needed simple things — the required employment-law posters in the break room and a new employee handbook. I put these things in place for him and made a thousand dollars. That money felt different from my salary. Every salary dollar was allocated to my expenses before I got it. The consulting money felt more real and more fizzy. I got three powerful lessons from that small project: • Consulting is simple — people have problems and you can solve them. • My consulting client wanted my opinion. My workmates sometimes wanted my opinions, and other times felt they had to accept my opinions because of my position and my job title. There’s a very big difference there! • When you try something new, you learn very fast. I stayed in the corporate world another ten years but I remembered the lessons I got in my first consulting gig. I saw that there is nothing complicated about walking down the street to help a person with a problem and charging them a few bucks to solve it.

If your friends tell you “You should start a business,” listen to them! Job security is not something that comes with a job title. It’s something you build for yourself. Maybe 2016 is the year you’re meant to launch your own business. It doesn’t have to be a full-time thing. You can start a business on the side, alongside your job or your job search. Here are five signs you should be working for yourself. YOU SEE A BETTER WAY TO DO THINGS When the cognitive dissonance between the way you see things done at work and the way you know they should be done — a smarter way — gets too great, it will really bother you. It will frustrate you to no end. That’s emotional energy wasted. Why not design the better way to do whatever you do, and create a business out of it? YOU FIND YOURSELF GOING OFF-BOOK TOO OFTEN Our client Max has a thriving business with 400 employees. He started the business twelve years ago when he

found himself sneaking around behind his bosses’ backs to serve his clients. His solutions to business problems were at odds with his company’s rules and policies at least fifty percent of the time, and that’s when he knew he couldn’t continue squashing himself into a tiny box anymore. YOU LOVE TO START THINGS, BUT NOT TO MAINTAIN THEM Many people take new jobs for the creative challenges in them, but then after a time the creative challenges dry up and the job gets boring. If you love to design new things and solve problems but hate to maintain systems, that’s a sign that you need a job where you’re always inventing — like the job of running your own company. WORKPLACE BUREAUCRACY IS KILLING YOU I am lucky, because I never worked for a huge lumbering organization full of red tape. I shouldn’t say “Never,” because I did work for a Wall Street firm for two months before I escaped. The two months was more than enough time to teach me that I couldn’t

survive in a bureaucratic environment, and many people are wired the same way. If your rule-bound, Team Mojofree workplace is crushing your spirit, it might be time to do your own thing. YOU HAVE A BIG IDEA Your big idea is unlikely to see the light of day in your present employer, because big ideas tend to get flattened, distorted and co-opted in the organizational blender. Save your big idea for yourself and start a business from it — maybe not tomorrow, but once the idea has had time to flower in your mind. Get a journal and write about your idea. Meditate on it and work out all the details. You can take your time. If you do nothing else for yourself this month, jump over to Vistaprint and get your own business cards, separate from the ones your employer gave you. Hand out those business cards when you meet new people. Step into your entrepreneurial persona a little more every day. Imagine your life as a business owner and get comfortable with it — because it has already begun. 
