EXPRESSING GRIEF

DURING SOCIAL DISTANCING

By Patty Tomsky, patty.tomsky@gazette.com

It’s difficult enough to lose a loved one — yet even more heartbreaking when you cannot hold services with all of those who would like to pay their respects. In an article from Legacy. com by Linnea Crowther this April, “How to Express Sympathy & Grief While Social Distancing,” Crowther provided several tips for bereaved families who would like to reach out from afar to comfort the bereaved while observing the rules of social distancing to keep well-wishers, friends and family safe. Hugging is not recommended, however, even though “it is one of the most basic impulses when someone we care about is grieving,” Crowther writes. The warmth and solace of a warm hug is unparalleled when someone is hurting — yet only household members should continue to come within arms’ length of one another to avoid COVID-19.

A KIND CARD

A sympathy card with a personal note will help bereaved people realize that thoughts and prayers are with them. There are online cards at Legacy.com and also a plethora of options for sending videos of your family wishing the bereaved family well from across the miles. Please do wash hands before you write the card out and send it and moisten the stamp with a sponge, Crowther advises. These may seem like overdoing it but it’s better to err on the side of caution. Facetime, Skype and Zoom appointments work well for sharing your condolences. Text or call first to make sure you’re not overstepping with just a ringing Facetime phone at a bad time (we’ve all been there). Virtually signing the guest book and sharing grief on social media are common practices today as are obituary comments on the Legacy site

or on the site hosted by the funeral home that is making arrangements for the family memorial. Many have a way for you to attach a photo of the deceased with friends and family, bringing a much-needed smile to the face of someone who may be missing them a lot.

LIVING HONOR

Planting a tree or naming a star after the deceased and sending along a copy of a photo (if the tree is in your backyard) or the certificate will be sure to warm hearts. Companies like Legacy Memorial Tree, overseen by “certified arborists in Minnesota’s Superior National Forest” allow you to choose more than one tree be planted. You will also receive a digital certificate commemorating your act of kindness. Customized gifts sourced at your local gift shop or funeral home can make a difference — everything from windchimes, plaques, blankets, charm bracelets and one-of-akind crafts on Etsy or Zazzle can memorialize the passing of a cherished friend or relative. Gift cards from local restaurants are often appreciated, as well, and delivery meals are often welcomed by the grieving, Crowther writes. Donating to a charity specified by the family online or in the newspaper’s obituary section is a compassionate way to let the family know you are thinking about them. You can also donate to your favorite charity if one isn’t specified — many will send a card to the family letting them know about your gift. Whatever you choose to do to express condolences from afar, Crowther urges that you “don’t forget to take care of yourself. Your own grief is important and you can’t put off feeling it and expressing it until this is all over and we’re back to normal.

GRIEF RESOURCES

Legacy offers grief support groups on Facebook for those experiencing every type of wrenching loss — from the passing of spouses to parents. There are various counseling services online as well as in-person grief support groups in your town or surrounding areas. Many of these

groups have moved online and are accepting new members. One of the most fulfilling things a bereaved person can do is surround themselves with those who know what they are going through — whether that’s inperson or online. Ask a local funeral director, hospital or hospice for resources near you.
