On Board
A warm welcome to Dutchess Day School’s newest Board members.

Although Scott Brien is new to the Dutchess Day Board of Trustees for the 20212022 school year, the Brien family has been part of the DDS community for the past seven years. Scott and his wife Kristi have two children at DDS. This year Emily will be in the 6th grade and their son Ben will be in the 2nd grade. Scott brings his background as an attorney to the board of trustees. For the past three years, he has worked for his wife Kristi’s family businesses, Royal Carting and Welsh Sanitation, as Inside Counsel and Operations Manager. Prior to that, he spent over a decade as a litigator specializing in matrimonial law and family law, and as an attorney for children. Scott remains of counsel at Campanaro & Tomkovitch, and he was previously a member of the Board of Directors for The Arc of Dutchess. Kristi has served as PA class rep and upper school chair, and this year will serve as the Book Fair chair. The Briens chose Dutchess Day School for their children without hesitation. Three of Kristi’s cousins attended Dutchess Day School. This provided the Briens with a sense of the strong academic foundation and the uniquely enriching community available at the school. When the Brien family is not spending time at home with their two boxers, Chloe and Luna, they enjoy mountain biking, skiing in the winter, and spending time at Lake Wallenpaupack in Pennsylvania.

Scott Brien and family. Patrick McCurdy
Patrick McCurdy joins the Board this fall after having already been involved as a member of the DDS Investment Committee. Patrick has an extensive finance background, having spent close to 20 years working for various financial institutions. He is currently the Head of Capital Consulting at Wells Fargo, where he assists hedge fund managers with their capital raising mandates. Patrick is a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall and served as the president of their alumni association and as a member of their board of trustees. He is currently on the Millbrook Golf and Tennis Club Board, where he serves as the Club Secretary and Head of Communications. Patrick loves spending his free time golfing, but can also be found every spring fly fishing the Wassaic Creek at Tamarack Preserve. The McCurdys have two boys, Thomas and James, who are in 4th and 2nd grades.
Patrick McCurdy and family. Debbie-Ann Morley
Debbie-Ann also brings a background as a lawyer to the Board of Trustees. In the beginning of her career, she worked for several law firms in New York City and then went on to run her own law firm there for five years. For the past decade, she has worked for Nationwide Insurance as a senior trial attorney and as a consultant for Nationwide Insurance’s complex claims team focusing on coverage and litigation matters involving high exposure claims in the New York construction market. Debbie-Ann has recently returned to private law practice as a partner at a New York City based defense litigation firm. She has also found time to be involved in DDS as a class rep and in other volunteer roles. She and her family started with the school many years ago with their son Luke, a DDS graduate who now attends Millbrook High School. Debbie-Ann is looking forward to years to come at the school with her daughter, Grace, who is in 2nd grade.
Shannon Vollmer
Shannon Vollmer is in her fourth year as the Director of College Counseling at Millbrook School. In her twenty years in education, she has spent time in independent, public, and Catholic schools. She served as an English teacher for twelve years and has been an administrator for eight, as Director of Admission and Director of College Counseling. At Dutchess Day, she has volunteered as a class parent and has helped with many PA events. Shannon and her husband, Jeff, moved to Millbrook three years ago. Impressed by Dutchess Day School’s academic reputation, nurturing environment, and commitment to instilling curiosity and independence in children, they quickly enrolled their three children. Will, Lila, and Jack are now in 5th, 4th, and 3rd grades. According to Shannon, “Dutchess Day has been everything we dreamed it would be for our children. They spend their days with a motivated and thoughtful group of creative and committed teachers who have helped instill intellectual curiosity and a love of learning in each of them. The DDS families are equally wonderful—full of parents with energy and enthusiasm that is unparalleled. I am so grateful to be part of this community.”

Sasha Schwartz
Sasha Schwartz joins Dutchess Day School this year as our new art teacher. Sasha studied sculpture and French at Washington University in St. Louis and got her Master's degree in Art Education from the School of Visual Arts. She then embarked on a long art teaching career, first in private school at Dwight Englewood School working with middle and high school artists, then abroad in the South of France, and finally in the NYC public school system. In NYC, she taught for 15 years in two different progressive public elementary schools in Upper Manhattan. A couple of years into her teaching career, she began offering afterschool classes at a nearby yoga studio. When these classes gained a substantial following, she founded Scribble Art Workshop, an intergenerational art studio that offers programming to artists of all ages, starting at 18 months, as well as training, curriculum, and professional development for art teachers who work in public and private schools, and community organizations. Scribble has a studio in Dobbs Ferry and sends their teachers throughout all five boroughs, New Jersey, Westchester, and Connecticut. She was awarded the Presidential Citation from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for excellence in teaching the first year the academy chose to honor NYC public school teachers and her studio was awarded "Best Young Artist Incubator" by NY Magazine. She lives with her husband and son on their farm with a couple of cows, some goats, a lone chicken, and their new puppy (who will herd the goats), Roscoe. She is so excited to be bringing her educational approach and passion for teaching art to the DDS community and will be joining us along with her son, Harrison, who will be in preschool.

1998

Byron Anderson, ’98, and his wife, Willy, are thrilled their son Crosby has started PK4 at Dutchess Day. Byron and Willy moved to Millbrook full-time in October 2019 with their sons, Crosby and Duke, and dogs, Sailor and Moby. After DDS, Byron attended the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, New York, to pursue his deep-rooted passion for ski racing. That led him to a Division I skiing program at St. Lawrence University where he graduated in 2006 with a B.A. in Political Science.
After spending four years living in Jackson, Wyoming, and Vail, Colorado, Byron moved to New York City where he enjoyed a successful real estate career in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and, most importantly, met Willy. He has continued his real estate career in Millbrook by taking over management of HW Guernsey Realtors, Inc., now HW Guernsey at Compass, where he runs a team of 18 agents between Northern Dutchess and Southern Columbia Counties.
Willy owned and operated a café and catering company based in Brooklyn for seven years prior to their move. She currently takes orders for custom cakes that are absolute works of art. Willy is also an avid equestrian. Byron and Willy couldn't be happier living in Millbrook full-time and being a part of the Dutchess Day community. They especially love the fact that several parents of Crosby's PK classmates attended DDS at the same time as Byron. It has been wonderful catching up with former schoolmates Jacqueline

1999
Vanesssa Vallarino graduated from Dutchess Day School in 1999. She continued her education at The Gunnery in Washington, Connecticut. According to Vallarino, “My four years spent there went by quickly, but it allowed me to explore my fascination in the arts and design.”
Vanessa had a passion for textiles and fashion design, which led her to The Savannah College of Art & Design where she doubled majored in Graphic Design and Fashion. While a freshman, Vanessa started dating Neil Carpenter, now a furniture and industrial designer, who she married a decade later. After college, Vanessa moved to New York City where she landed her first corporate job at Li & Fung, starting as an intern and working her way up to Director of Fashion Forecasting and Textiles. After five years of working in corporate, Vanessa established her own line, Vallarino Saltonstall, a ready-to-wear women’s line, carried through a variety of stores across the US and overseas. After many years of trial and error, she reinvented her brand, opening a store on the fashionable Bergen Street, in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Vanessa created a thriving business platform for emerging designers to sell their lines, while offering consulting services to help them launch and target their brand. Her store, “V Curated,” was open for six years, until she closed and moved back to Millbrook with her husband, who is the owner and designer of Carpenter Watches. Vanessa was eight months pregnant with her daughter, Tallulah, when they purchased their home in Millbrook in 2018. Seven months later, Vanessa found out she was pregnant with her son, Hugo.
Vanessa believes her experience growing up in Millbrook and being close to family was their motivation to move back to her hometown. Vanessa and Neil’s daughter Tallulah is now attending Dutchess Day School, and their son Hugo, who is 19 months, is at Circle of Friends.
