COOPER ROY, Fair grove high school

Months after surviving a head-on car accident and soldiering through numerous surgeries, Fair Grove’s Cooper Roy hopes folks know one thing.

“I wouldn’t say I have inspired anyone,” Cooper said. “I’d say God gave me the ability to inspire.”

The 2023 Fair Grove High School graduate certainly has been some story – a positive one, that is – and it’s why he is deserving of the Inspiration Award during the 2025 Sports Commission Awards presented by Elliott Lodging.

The accident was Sept. 24, 2024, and he has proven to be a fighter. Perhaps that was expected, considering Cooper played football and ran track during his high school years.

In December, after undergoing numerous surgeries, he willed himself to attend Fair Grove’s football state championship game against Lamar, as his younger brother, Carter, was on the Fair Grove team.

hands, gave Cooper the heart sign. It was captured in a poi gnant photo.

porary exit from the hospital, and a cousin borrowed a wheelchair van in order to transport Cooper to the game in Columbia.

Upon arrival, there were signs that included #CooperStrong.

“Our faith is important to our family,” said his mom, Mickie. “Carter saw there were more important things in life than sports. But sports is about how it brings families together. And that started Carter on bringing the teams together after games for a prayer.”

It wasn’t just Carter who found inspiration. So did the community and numerous others, who created signs at sporting events with his favorite bible verse.

In the accident, his right arm was just about the only body part uninjured. His left knee was nearly severed, he lost part of his left hand and he suffered a right ankle compound fracture, as well as a broken right knee, torn and open hamstring, back of his thigh, broken hips and ribs, a collapsed lung, and facial injuries. Multiple surgeries followed.

Yet Cooper fought through it all.

Attend a Nixa High School football or basketball game, and you’ll likely spot Crawford Bassak either on the sideline or sitting near it.

The 2011 Nixa High School graduate, born with cerebral palsy, is said to be the Eagles’ biggest fan.

“I’ve always said there are two places I could him leave him – the basketball gym or football field – and there’s plenty of people who would watch over him,” said his dad, Billy.

Crawford has been attending Nixa games since he was a young pup, and his support of the Eagles is why he is being honored with an Inspiration Award during the Sports Commission Awards.

Crawford Bassak, NIXA

He was born 12 weeks early and, while he’s had his challenges, he still sees to it to be there for the Eagles – and of course this past school year was one of their best.

The football team played for the Class 6 state championship, and the boys basketball team made the Final Four. Over the years, he’s been there for the girls basketball teams that have enjoyed great success. Which also means he has

been there to see successful coaches, athletes and some of the school’s most memorable moments.

“Everybody loves him. With being involved in sports, he doesn’t know a stranger,” his dad said. “He just loves being involved.”

His parents, Billy and Dana, and sister Alexis Frazee made sure to get him to games – especially when Alexis was on the basketball team. Billy grew up in Nixa and was a sports fan anyway. So it was only natural that the family then fell in love with sports, with Crawford almost always wearing the school’s red colors.

“His senior year, a bunch of the boys bought him a letterjacket. I cried like a little 6-year-old girl,” Billy said. “That’s what you worried about when he was a kid – is he going to be accepted?”

The entire school loves Crawford, who sometimes retreats to his bedroom and watches some games though YouTube.

“He’s always telling people he loves to watch the players,” Billy said.

noah drake, Norwood High School

In the fall of 2022, months after his foot went numb for no reason before tests revealed a major issue, Norwood High School basketball player Noah Drake landed in the hospital.

“At one point, two surgeons stood at the foot of his bed and told him, ‘We aren’t talking about basketball. We’re trying to save your foot,’” recalled his mom, Kayla.

What was determined to be popliteal artery entrapment threw a scare into the then-sophomore, who had been part of Norwood High School’s 2022 state championship basketball team as its sixth man.

However, it didn’t deter him, and his fight is why he is being honored with the Inspiration Award during the Sports Commission Awards presented by Elliott Lodging.

Noah just graduated as the valedictorian in May 2025. Along the way, he not only scored a 28 on his ACT but scored north of 1,000 points in his career (as did two of his teammates).

“All glory to god,” said Noah, who in 2022 underwent a six-hour surgery. “It was a miracle. (Doctors) said I’d probably not play competitive basketball again.”

“What he went through would have been a lot for an adult to handle, let alone a 16-year-old kid,” said his mom, Kayla.

Noah was back on the basketball court that December and this spring also marked his fourth year on the baseball team, as the centerfielder.

While doctors successfully repaired the artery and restored blood flow to his foot, it isn’t quite enough when he’s active. He is also missing a large part of his calf muscle that was removed during surgery.

He’ll never forget the December 2022 post-operations meeting with his doctor.

“He said, ‘This is amazing. How would you like to return to basketball?’” Noah recalled. “I played my first game after the first of the year.”

He had the support of his parents, Matt and Kayla, and siblings Ethan, Kaytlynn, Kendall and Thomas.

“The prayers of this community made the difference,” Noah said. “It was all God’s doing.”

“He is a true team player,” Kayla said. “He graduated high school with 42 (I think) college credit hours, and academic all-state honors in both baseball and basketball. He’s a pretty amazing young man.”

Sports Commission CUP

The Springfield Sports Commission Cup was established in 2024 and is a prestigious award that celebrates the exceptional achievements of school athletics programs in the Sports Commission Awards area. Schools earn points based on their performance in MSHSAA-sanctioned sports, with a unique scoring system designed to honor outstanding team success throughout the academic year.

Tonight, we’ll reveal the Top Ten schools, and the highest-scoring school will proudly receive the Sports Commission Cup to display at their district.

SCORING REMINDER

A point system that honors athletic programs in southwest Missouri that have achieved team success during the academic school year.

Point System

The point system was created based on the championships sponsored by MSHSAA. Two separate point systems account for bracket sports and non-bracket sports although the two systems are similar in format.

Bracket Sports

Points are determined with points awarded in a descending manner with 75 points being awarded to the state champion. Points descend in increments of 10 for teams that reach the final four where MSHSAA provides a championship and third-place contest. The following brackets descend in increments of five with the only exception being football where no third-place game is held.

Non-Bracket Sports

Points are determined in a descending manner of the top 16 teams. See the accompanying chart for the scoring structure.
