Message from the CEO In the June 2016 Update Magazine, The Chamber reported on the new Open Door Business Mentoring & Internship Program announced by Lincoln Land Community College and The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. It was reported that the program, funded by the Chamber’s Quantum Growth Economic Development Partnership (Q5), would begin this fall by connecting 20-30 African-American male LLCC students with local businesses and organizations.

The program successfully began in late August with the hiring of Michael Phelon as the program director. In less than six weeks, 26 students had entered the program with 28 local businesses and organizations (listed below) becoming partners in this joint venture.

The Open Door program provides a combination of academic guidance, business mentoring, and internships, ultimately leading to employment opportunities related to the career path the students discover and pursue. The program provides minority students the ability to “try on” various careers that exist within our community.

A little over two years ago, Hanson Professional Services, the City of Springfield and Sangamon County created a partnership called “Grow Our Own,” focused on providing minority students the opportunity to explore STEMrelated careers, specifically engineering.

According to Hanson Chairman and CEO Satch Pecori, “The program has been very well received and spurred interest in non-STEM related fields. The Open Door program expands into other career opportunities from banking and accounting to insurance, medical fields, IT and everything in between.”

LLCC answered the call for expansion by creating the new program with funding provided by The Chamber’s Q5 Strategic Leadership Council.

“We’re extremely excited about this endeavor and the potential it has to change the trajectory of students’ lives,” said Dr. Charlotte Warren, President of LLCC. “We envision it as transformational, a game-changer, opening up a world of new possibilities for participating students.”

Carpenter Street Underpass opens On August 21, 2014, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Carpenter Street underpass, the first of several underpasses to be constructed as a part of The Springfield Rail Improvements Project. Two year later, on August 29, 2016, federal, state, and local officials were on hand for the Carpenter Street underpass ribbon cutting ceremony, officially opening the underpass to traffic.

This was a significant day as it marked the official opening of the first of eight underpasses that will better connect our community while making vehicle and pedestrian travel safer, allow for further growth in the medical district, and open our downtown community to greater economic development opportunities.

The City of Springfield was recently awarded a $14 million federal TIGER Grant to fund the next phase of the project, construction of the Ash and Laurel Street underpasses.

The Chamber, through its Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5), has supported and advocated for the importance and implementation of The Springfield Rail Improvements Project for many years. As recently as May of this year, The Chamber and Q5 coordinated and facilitated the travel of local officials and leaders to Washington DC to discuss the continued importance of the project with our legislative leaders and the Federal Rail Administration. The Chamber will continue to support efforts to complete The Springfield Rail Improvements Project.

Make connections Business insights to at Speed Networking be shared at Economic

Join 24 other businesses for Speed Networking on November 10 at The Chamber office. Registration will begin at 3:45 p.m. with the event starting promptly at 4 p.m. Each participant will have 2-3 minutes to give a presentation about the products and services their business offers.

Springfield Advantage updates go live

The Chamber’s Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) created the website SpringfieldAdvantage.org specifically for site selectors to serve as a one-stop shop for data and information about Springfield and Sangamon County.

Recently, Q5 has updated the website to serve as an even greater benefit to not only site selectors, but local businesses as well.

With workforce being a primary driver in location decision making, Q5 wanted to promote our available workforce data. Some of the key new features of the site are pages that include major employers, college degrees and postsecondary certificates awarded by colleges and universities in Springfield and Sangamon County, and an overview of jobs broken down by both industry and occupation codes.

The other feature added to the community section of the website is a cost of living calculator. This was created so that our businesses and potential hires can utilize a data driven approach to compare cost of living to other communities. Recruiters, human resource staff and potential hires will be able to go to the website and key in their salary to compare communities to Springfield. This feature will highlight to potential hires how much further there money will go in Springfield and Sangamon County.

Chamber releases 2016 Guide to Retail

The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce has released the 2016 Springfield and Sangamon County Guide to Retail.

The Guide to Retail is an annual document published every fall by Q5 for the purpose of attracting and retaining business investment in the area. The release of the Guide coincides with the International Council for Shopping Centers annual Chicago Deal Making event, where local leaders and developers have the opportunity to promote the Springfield community to a wide array of retailers.

Included in the 68-page document is a detailed overview of the Springfield trade area, primary retail hubs, as well as promising retail development sites and projects. Each “market profile” provides an in depth examination of Springfield’s retail centers through a series of maps and income/ demographic data. The Guide also includes information on other surrounding communities in Sangamon County, ranging from New Berlin to Illiopolis, Divernon and Williamsville.

The publication has been redesigned, which makes it easier to read and provides a more vibrant look and feel to be more attractive to potential retailers.

Job Fair successfully brings together employers and job seekers The Greater Springfield Chamber Job Fair was held on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The event, sponsored by Lincoln Land Community College and First Student, was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Around 500 job seekers attended the fair, which provided companies the opportunity to screen many individuals in a short period of time. Fortysix employers from the central Illinois area attended the fair and employers responded very positively about the quality of candidates participating. One employer received over 70 resumes and scheduled interviews with 20 of those individuals. The Job Fair provides Chamber members with a low-cost opportunity to connect with job seekers.

This software, called Jobs EQ, is a nationally recognized technology platform that delivers a careful analysis of the capacity and capability of our area’s workforce. It provides an online access point where Chamber staff have access to data and information about our local labor market, and it can be used when responding to information requests from businesses considering relocating to the community, or to assist any business in our area thinking of expansion.

Jobs EQ allows staff to access detailed data, such as employment, wages, and demographic statistics. Information is provided for our state, region, county and city, and can be as specific as a zip-

code level of detail. Site selectors and industry executives respond to datadriven, empirical evidence that a region’s workforce has the skills they demand.

Current, occupation-specific data is coupled with education system data to help describe our area’s workforce pipeline.

Ultimately, this software will help our community with business retention, expansion and attraction by providing decision makers real time data on our community’s workforce capabilities. Additional Categories

Adding more categories can be a very important component to improve the ability for your business to be found in our online Business Directory. One business category is included with Chamber membership and members have the option to add more categories for just $25 per category per year. If your business offers more than one product or service, it might be missing an opportunity to be located in the directory. Don’t take the chance on missing new customers by not being listed under the appropriate categories.

The Advantage Package provides members an opportunity to enhance their listing in the Chamber’s online business directory.

Opening eyes during Business Education Week This October, business professionals experienced first-hand look of the day-to-day lives of today’s teachers and students through Business Education Week.

said. “Looking in, you don’t realize how much these teachers do for the kids and what they go through on a daily basis. I have a whole new respect for what they do.”

For two weeks community members were involved in, “Principal for a Day” and “Business Professionals in the Classroom” programs, and experienced the rigors of making sure a school is run properly, from building relationships with students to learning about the needs of schools. The week is intended to help individuals understand the complex role of the school principal and the teachers so organizations can get a perspective on the school system from within.

The Business Professionals in the Classroom program is open to all professionals and allows them to teach a lesson related to their career or assist a teacher in their daily routine. The professionals get a detailed view of how a typical classroom is managed and what teachers encounter with today’s students. In addition to local businesses, Springfield School District 186, Ball-Chatham School District, and other county public and private schools in the area are involved.

The Principal for a Day program allows employees to shadow a school principal for one day. Principals discuss the challenges they face, inform the participant what students are learning and achieving, and how this directly relates to workforce development. Additionally, this gives company representatives an opportunity to see where they can become involved in education for Sangamon County.

Participants have found these two programs to be very rewarding because they become aware of challenges educators face and learn about the many successes that occur in our local schools. School officials also see a major benefit in hosting the participants. Edwin A. Lee Elementary Principal Nathan Kochanowski said the program allows parallels to be made between the school and business worlds.

For Joseph Nance of Modern Woodmen of America, it was a chance to really learn about what happens during a normal school day. “It’s been a very good experience seeing how things are run on the ground floor,” Nance

“It’s been beneficial, and we talked about how a lot of what we do is the same as far as managing time, how important it is

to understand what needs to get accomplished each day because there are so many demands,” Kochanowski said. “It’s great to have someone different see what’s going on in schools these days. I want participants to be aware of how hard teachers work and what is being asked of the modern teacher besides just academics.”
