Message from the CEO As we wrap up the summer, it is a good time to look back at the first eight months of 2016. This year has been filled with numerous opportunities and significant accomplishments on behalf of our members, Q5 investors, and the community at-large.

We held several can’t miss, major events the Annual Gala, State of the City Luncheon, Business Connections, Small Business Awards, Corporate Cup Challenge, and Plae Dae Picnic. Each provided significant community engagement and information, expanded business opportunities, and venues for building your network. Look for 2017 dates in future Update magazines.

At the request of Superintendent Jennifer Gill, our Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) funded and completed the Business Community Perceptions Survey of District 186 and presented the final report to the Board of Education. The report can be found on our website, gscc.org.

Q5 fully funded the first three years of LLCC’s Open Door Business Mentoring and Internship program for African American male college students. The program begins this fall with numerous Chamber businesses participating. We also joined

the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln in providing funding for the launch of Innovate Springfield (iSPI) in downtown Springfield, our community’s first and only business incubator.

Two years ago, we worked with the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) to invite Bluffstone to Springfield.

Bluffstone provides quality student housing communities and strives for excellence through building and maintaining positive and meaningful relationships with colleges, universities, and local communities. Nearly two years ago we walked through downtown Springfield, looking at properties. Bluffstone has now invested over eight million dollars in Springfield, and their student housing facility just opened!

So, what does the remainder of 2016 have in store for us? In this edition you will learn more about the redesign of our economic development/site selector website – springfieldadvantage.org, the coming release of our retail guide, the September elected officials reception, and our fall Economic Outlook Breakfast.

Meet your elected officials The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will host an Elected Officials Reception on Thursday, September 15 at 5:00 p.m.

Fast connections at Speed Networking

Don’t miss your opportunity to make rapid new connections at the next Speed Networking event, which takes place September 8 at The Chamber.

Registration will begin at 3:45 p.m. with Speed Networking starting promptly at 4 p.m.

Speed Networking will provide an opportunity for Chamber member businesses to meet 24 other businesses in a fast-paced and exciting environment. Attendees can develop new leads in a structured format, perfect for any business.

Each participant will have 2-3 minutes to give their presentation about the products and services their business offers. Attendees are encouraged to bring a one page summary about their business and plenty of business cards (at least 24 of each).

Space is limited to the first 25 people that register. Only one person per company will be allowed to participate. Registration will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Deadline to register is on September 6 by 5 p.m.

Students gain valuable insight through the Summer Youth Employment Program The Summer Youth Employment Program has once again ushered in a new group of students who have used the experience to learn new skills, make connections, and create new opportunities.

a student at Dillard University in New Orleans, said her time at Benedictine University has been incredibly helpful, especially learning programs.

Q5’s Diversity Development Committee has partnered with The Springfield Project (TSP) for the past seven years to bring internships to students. The program kicked off this summer with 15 students and six Chamber members participating, including H. D. Smith and Benedictine University at Springfield.

“I’ve learned a lot of Excel,” Griffin said. “I’ve learned a lot about being in a working environment.”

More than 400 high school and college students have assisted local businesses and organizations through the program since it began.

Students worked at participating businesses for six weeks, starting June 20.”

H. D. Smith, a national distributor of healthcare products, services and business solutions, participated again this year and acquired the services of Southeast High School graduate Cyann Dent. She handled a variety of tasks around the office, including general reception duties.

“I love it here and all of the people are wonderful,” Dent said.

“I’ve been able to meet the bosses and CEOs of the company and now they know my face and my name. I’ve learned a lot about being professional.”

Since Dent is attending Bradley University and majoring in premed, she said working at H. D. Smith was a good fit for her.

Nakia Griffin, a Southeast High School graduate and now

Nakia’s sister, Kaia, participated in the program three years ago and worked at Benedictine University, so Nakia was even more delighted to get the same experience.

Mary Werries, registrar at Benedictine University, said the students are always going above and beyond.

“We had a major project this summer, which I thought would last six weeks, and they were so efficient that it was done in two weeks,” Werries said.

Since Benedictine University has information on every student that has attended the school, administrators looked to Nakia to help scan and organize the files, some even dating back to the early 1900s. She said learning life skills will help her with whatever career she pursues.

“This experience will be useful when I go back to school,” Griffin said. “

Chamber seeks business support to become a Certified Work Ready Community Sangamon County, via The Chamber’s Q5 Workforce and Education Council, is working to become the first county in Illinois to be a Certified Work Ready Community (CWRC). “Work Ready Sangamon” has achieved 76% of its goals and has 22 businesses supporting the initiative. Additional companies are asked to show their support.

Employers that recognize this certification from applicants can use its ranking to assess an individual’s chance for success within their organization. The certification will help businesses hire the most qualified people for opportunities within their organization, which leads to lower turnover and employment costs.

Counties participating in the CWRC program work to have their emerging, unemployed and current workers take a series of tests to obtain an employability certificate, also called the NCRC (National Career Readiness Certificate). This certificate demonstrates skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and mathematical reasoningall of which are in demand by employers.

Individuals will be certified as bronze, silver, gold or platinum based on their performance on the tests, and the certificate they receive guarantees their skills and is transferrable anywhere in the United States. Lincoln Land Community College provides the online assessments that test individual’s knowledge in these areas.

ACT, known for college entrance exams, is the organization that provides this certification. Sangamon County was one of

eight counties selected in the U.S. this past year to achieve this recognition, which shows Sangamon County has a system in place to align its workforce with business employment needs.

The NCRC also helps validate the quality of a community’s workforce to help attract and retain companies, as well as reveal areas where improvements are necessary.

Being a Certified Work Ready Community will position Sangamon County to be a leader in the state, engaging area business, education and economic development leaders to work together toward the shared goal of creating jobs and growing the economy.

Site selection website updates coming soon The Springfield Advantage website serves as the area’s economic development website to help promote Springfield and Sangamon County and provide information on available property, demographics, workforce and general community information. New updates will be rolled out this summer to www.springfieldadvantage.org to provide business location decision makers with more data and information about Springfield and Sangamon County. Two primary changes to the website are enhanced workforce data and a cost of living calculator.

With workforce being a primary driver in location decision making, Q5 wanted to promote our available workforce data.

Some of the key new features of the site are pages that include major employers, college degrees and postsecondary certificates awarded by colleges and universities in

Springfield and Sangamon County, and an overview of jobs broken down by both industry and occupation codes.

The other feature added to the community section of the website is a cost of living calculator. This was created so that our businesses and potential hires can utilize a data driven approach to compare cost of living to other communities.

Recruiters, human resource staff and potential hires will be able to go to the website and key in their salary to compare communities to Springfield. The site will then calculate how much money someone would need to make in the other communities alongside average expenditures of housing, transportation, groceries, utilities and other costs to meet the cost of living in Springfield. This feature will highlight to potential hires how much further there money will go in Springfield and Sangamon County.

Take part in Business Education Week annually.

Participants in the past have found these two programs to be very rewarding because they become aware of challenges educators face and learn about the many successes that occur in our local schools.

The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce’s Business Education Partnership of Sangamon County (BEP) is gearing up for Business Education Week 2016, which is being held October 18 through October 20. Additional participation dates are October 11 through October 13 and are being offered to accommodate various schedules.

BEP was established in 2005 when The Chamber recognized a need to support education by developing business and civic partnerships for schools. The Partnership incorporates public and private organizations so students can be exposed to multiple career opportunities throughout their education.

Ultimately the goal is simple, to strengthen the community partnerships and encourage

student achievement. The stronger our education systems are, the stronger our businesses and their workforce become.

Currently the biggest threat to economic development is the lack of a skilled workforce.

The BEP hopes early exposure to a variety of careers will encourage students to plan for their chosen career path. Your support and participation provides students in Sangamon County a rich educational experience.

Business Education Week is designated as a time to get community members involved in conversations about education and our schools, specifically to help individuals understand the complex role of the school principal and teachers so organizations can get a perspective on the school system from within. Exposing business professionals to the everyday decision making, conflict resolution, and monitoring that occurs in schools is an eye-opening experience.

The community is invited to participate in two programs during Business Education Week - Principal for a Day, and Business Professionals in the Classroom.

The Principal for a Day program allows higher level employees to shadow a school Principal for one day. This allows Principals to discuss the challenges they face, inform the participant what students are learning and achieving, and how this directly relates to workforce development. Additionally, this gives company representatives an opportunity to see where they can become involved in education for Sangamon County.

The Business Professionals in the Classroom program (2-3 hours) is open to all professionals and allows them to teach a lesson related to their career or assist a teacher in their daily routine.

Additionally, the professionals get a detailed view of how a typical classroom is managed and what teachers encounter with today’s students. 2016 Guide to Retail gets a makeover

Every fall, The Chamber releases the Springfield and Sangamon County, Illinois Guide to Retail, an annual document published for the purpose of attracting and retaining retail business investment in the area. In previous years, the guide has proven a valuable tool in attracting new retailers to the Springfield market. The release of the guide coincides with the International Council for Shopping Center’s annual Chicago Deal Making Conference where local leaders and developers have the opportunity to promote Springfield and Sangamon County to a wide array of retailers and developers.

Included in the retail guide is a detailed overview of the Springfield and Sangamon County trade area, primary retail hubs, as well as existing and proposed retail development sites and projects. Each “market profile” provides an in-depth examination of Springfield’s retail centers through a series of maps and demographic data including population, households, household income levels and age distribution within 1, 3 and 5 mile radiuses. As a resource to and for members, The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce has established an online speakers bureau to provide a list of Springfield area speakers who have expertise on business-related topics. Speaker participation is limited to representatives of Chamber member companies.

If you, as a Chamber member, have an interest in presenting on a topic to provide education to civic and other organizations, visit the Chamber website, gscc.org. Under the Business Resources area, click on Online Speakers Bureau and then click the link to fill out the online application.

The Online Speakers Bureau is provided as a source of information only. The goal is to help connect organizations with prospective speakers. All arrangements must be made directly between the organization and the speaker. The Chamber does not endorse or recommend the speakers listed on our website.
