2015 Business Connections Trade Show The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce’s Business Connections trade show will be held on Thursday, April 30 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. The show floor opens at 1 p.m. and is free to the public. The show is designed to provide businesses with opportunities to display and promote their products and services, and let customers personally experience what they have to offer.
Why is Business Connections important? The Prairie Capital Convention Center will be buzzing with booths representing healthcare, education, employment, recreation, salons, restaurants and many more. The variety of participating businesses is one of many great reasons to be a part of this event. Business Connections is the perfect opportunity to interact with customers on a face-to-face basis. We invite everyone to come in and check out what local businesses are doing to grow our economy. Make New Connections at Speed Networking The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will host Speed Networking at Business Connections on Thursday, April 30 from 9 a.m to 11 a.m. at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. Speed Networking offers your business extensive exposure in a fast-paced and exciting format. Develop new leads in a structured format, perfect for businesses of all sizes. Participants will be assigned to a table of up to nine other people and each attendee will have two minutes to make a presentation about their company and product or service. Each person will give their presentation four times to a
different group of prospects. Attendees are encouraged to bring a one page summary about their business and plenty of business cards (at least 50 of each). The cost to attend Speed Networking is $10 for Chamber members, $25 for non-members, no-cost for those exhibiting that day. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. Plae Dae Returns to Knight’s Action Park The Chamber’s Plae Dae returns to Knight’s Action Park and the month of July this year. The event will take place on Friday, July 24 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Knight’s Action Park, 1700 Knight’s Recreation Drive in Springfield. Having certified sites in our community increases the marketability not only for Springfield and Sangamon County, but for the site itself. Commercial and industrial site selectors will often start their search
with certified sites for speed to market.
A certified site means the data is available for infrastructure and utilities and preliminary studies have been conducted to show that the site has low risk or that environmental risks have already been identified. The International Economic Development Council has established industry standards for site certification.
During the spring and early summer, Q5 will be identifying larger scale industrial sites and accepting proposals for a partner to certify a site as shovel ready. Also during this time, Q5 staff, along with our certification partner, will identify the first site for certification. After a partner and site are selected, the process should take three to four months of data collection and necessary environmental studies.
Moving Forward with the Downtown Community Development Corporation
The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and its Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) are continually working to better the community and economy, and revitalization of Springfield’s downtown can work to accomplish that goal. This is why a Community Development Corporation (CDC) is crucial to making real, long—lasting change.
What is a Community Development Corporation? Community Development Corporations (CDCs) are community-based organizations focused on revitalizing the areas in which they are located, typically in areas that have experienced significant dis-investment. They can be either for-profit or not-for-profit. While CDCs are most commonly celebrated for developing housing, and/or mixed use housing, they are often times involved in a range of initiatives critical to community health such as economic development, sanitation, street-scaping AND neighborhood planning projects. Sometimes they even provide education and social services to community residents.
Why is the formation of a CDC important to Springfield and The Chamber? As a result of our economic development efforts, a focus on downtown revitalization and redevelopment, results of our downtown housing study in 2013, and the SDAT report (Sustainable Design Assessment Team), it was determined that a CDC would be critical to facilitate downtown redevelopment. It’s important on many levels. The CDC can be used to kick start much needed redevelopment in the heart of our downtown community. The CDC will help us meet a need for downtown housing, keep our talented young
people in Springfield (77 percent of millennials are looking for a vibrant downtown community and prefer to live downtown), promote economic development, and attract new businesses. Understanding the important role a CDC could play in Springfield’s future, the Q5 Strategic Leadership Council and representatives of the Mayor’s SDAT action committee began looking at various types of CDCs, talking with industry professionals, and evaluating the pros and cons of both for-profit and not-for-profit CDCs. Ultimately the group determined a not-for-profit model best fits our community needs because it provides layered options for financing developments, and most of all a not-for-profit CDC will reinvest development revenues in future projects. As a result, a downtown CDC and an advisory board has been created and organized under the umbrella of an existing 501(c)3 not-for-profit entity, The Springfield Project. Utilizing an existing not-for-profit allows us to proceed with potential development efforts without having to wait 12 – 24 months while a new entity is developed.
What is currently happening? The Downtown CDC is currently focused on and working on two things: raising seed capital for the first development and the identification of a viable mixed use project that will include residential housing, commercial and/or retail space. Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) Learn About Our Accomplishments and Priorities The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) are moving ahead with new community and business initiatives while continuing to offer valuable services to our membership. What are three accomplishments from last year? One of our main goals was to continue to support and advocate for the importance and implementation of the rail relocation project. The project is moving forward with the construction of the Carpenter Street underpass which began in August of this year. We retooled and realigned our business attraction efforts with the creation of our new economic development website, SpringfieldAdvantage.org, promoting Springfield and Sangamon County. Businesses, consultants and site selectors considering relocation and/or new development in our area get easy access to information, available sites and critical demographic and statistical information about our community. In 2014, we met with 101 local businesses through our business retention and expansion program, gathering and passing along critical information to community leaders in order to address the issues related to growth and expansion to create a better business climate for our community. What are some priorities for 2015? One of our many goals is to become a Certified ACT Work Ready Community, which closes the skills gap through a workforce development program that equips individuals, employers and communities with tools for career alignment and business growth. We will work with our workforce education council to identify necessary requirements, implement those requirements and apply for certification, which will better position Sangamon County as a community to retain, expand and attract
businesses. We will continue to work on, and when appropriate, coordinate advocacy and funding efforts with local, state and federal officials for the next phase of the rail relocation project, specifically the Ash Street underpass. We will implement a more aggressive Business Retention, Expansion & Attraction Plan. In order to do so, we’ll market the SpringfieldAdvantage.org website and aggressively contact and pursue relationships with at least 25 site selectors as a part of our business attraction efforts, while conducting 125 visits with existing businesses. Lastly, in response to the downtown housing study we funded in 2013, which revealed a significant need for downtown housing, Q5 provided funding for, and worked with, a consultant to identify the necessary steps to form a Community Development Corporation (CDC), an entity through which downtown development projects can be coordinated and completed. Early in 2015, we will take the necessary steps to complete that organizational structure, and work with our partners to select the board members in order to activate the CDC for downtown development. What are your expectations for this year? Our expectations are understandably high. Every really good thing that ever happens, whether in our personal lives, businesses, or the life of a community begins with a clear plan, clear objectives and really high expectations. The Chamber is in a great position to make some big strides in making a positive impact in our community and business climate. With the continued help of our members, investors and volunteers, 2015 is shaping up to be another fantastic year for not only The Chamber and Q5, but for the entire Springfield and Sangamon County community.

Youth Employment 2015 Coming Soon The Summer Youth Employment Program will be going into full swing as the end of the school year draws closer.
At this moment, The Springfield Project is reaching out to local businesses and organizations to assist in helping some of Sangamon County’s young people, ages 15 to 21, find work this summer. The program not only develops and hones skills for students, but also provides income that can go towards helping these students continue to grow into the talented workforce our community requires every day. Participating students tell The Springfield Project the Summer Youth Employment Program means financial independence for the duration of employment. For other students, the work helps to fund their goals of attending college.

Any business or organization that would like to help, but cannot take a student may inquire about other ways to help.
