Since 1897, Memorial has been building stronger communities through better health. Finally, The Chamber’s Development Policy Council (DPC), a group made up of permitting and zoning officials from the City, County, Regional Planning Commission and local developers and contractors, continues to meet monthly.

The DPC has made great progress recently in having honest communications among these groups that has led to real improvement on permitting and zoning issues. While there’s still much work to be done, I am optimistic that a permitting and zoning process providing timely answers to those wanting to invest in our community can be achieved. Even though I miss the General Assembly, I am in a much better place to help our local businesses provide opportunities for their customers, and more importantly their staff. Thanks for giving me this opportunity.

FROM THE CEO

WORKING EVERYDAY FOR CHAMBER MEMBER BUSINESSESMESSAGE

Business Resources & Support

We connect local businesses to resources that address specific needs, protect their businesses, and increase opportunities for growth.

Leadership & Professional Development

The question I get asked almost daily is “Do you miss politics and being in the General Assembly?”. My answer is always the same. “Yes, I do miss being involved in the process of working as the representative for the people in Springfield and Sangamon County. However, I am now able to work for those same people everyday trying to help the businesses in our communities”. I still attend many of the same meetings that I have been involved with over the last several years, but now it’s in a different capacity. The work that The Chamber does behind the scenes in trying to move our area forward keeps me very busy.

Mike Murphy President and CEO In 2019, as a freshmen member of the General Assembly I was proud to vote for the Capitol Bill that secured needed funding to keep the Springfield Rail Relocation Project moving forward. I now attend the monthly meeting hosted by Hanson Professional Services as one of many community leaders that are working together to ensure this project will meet its goal of being completed by 2025. Another part of the rail relocation project that I have been working on is the MultiModal Transportation Center Café. Several of my former restaurant colleagues and I are working on a food service plan that will provide great offerings for travelers, county workers and the general public. I have also been working with the developers of the Scheels Sports Park, assisting them with communicating what will be needed to get this important project started and completed. This venture can lead to great development, not only in Legacy Pointe but for all of Sangamon County. We just need everyone working together.

As a significant voice of business, we support legislative policies and practices conducive for a thriving business community and local economy, and oppose those that are not.

6 TheCHAMBERUPDATE | gscc.org ENERGY CO-OP SAVES ON UTILITY COSTS

SEPTEMBER

The Chamber continues to partner with nationally recognized energy management experts, CQI Associates, to administer and manage the Chamber’s Energy Purchasing Cooperative. Competitive rates are obtained by leveraging aggregated usage from members of 23 Chambers of Commerce. The increased purchasing power allows members to receive lower rates than they could typically attain on their own. Unprecedented temperatures, the war and the economy continue to escalate utility prices to historic levels. CQI’s 25-plus years of experience with proven results provides the best option for stabilizing your utility expenses. There is no better time for members to enroll in the Chamber Energy Purchasing Cooperative Program and gain price stability, budget control and peace-of-mind. Since 2004, the Cooperative Electricity and Natural Gas rates have been lower than both market rates and the weighted annual utility standard offer service rates. This benefit is only available to Chamber members who receive their electric and/or natural gas services through Ameren. If your business or organization is a substantial user of natural gas and/or electricity, significant savings can be realized on its annual utility costs.

Tickets are $25 for Chamber members through October 20 and increase to $35 after that date. Table sponsorships are available for $400 and include 8 seats and recognition in the program. To register, go to the Events page at www. Thisgscc.org.event is made possible through the generous support of our presenting sponsor, as well as Corporate Sponsor Hanson Professional Services, Inc., Premier Sponsor Comcast Business, and Venue Sponsor Lincoln Land Community College.

Advocacy is something that is part of the Chamber’s work almost every day. We will always work to ensure that our elected leaders are informed of our position on key issues that are facing the business community in our area.

Following are some examples of how we put into action our policy agenda at the local, state, and federal level.

19ALWAYS BUY CHAMBER

• Joining other Chambers across the state in the initiative “All in for Economic Recovery”, monitoring legislation and taking a stand at the State level.

• Working with elected officials, staff, and stakeholders to advance pro-business policies

• Contacting federal representatives on issues important to our membership, most recently to support critical legislation that would make it easier for semi-conductor chips to be produced in the U.S.

• Appearing on local radio and television stations to promote business interests to the community.

• Speaking at City Council meetings regarding local issues.

• Submitting witness slips on issues being heard by the Illinois General Assembly. We also educate members on this process and encourage them to do the same.

• Monitoring, reviewing, and when appropriate, taking positions on proposed legislation and regulations

• Promoting business interests to the media
