MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

TAKE TIME TO ANALYZE YOUR BUSINESS PROCESS

rides my fitness level and weight loss is not happening as quickly as previous years. This has caused me to rethink my training regimen. I have embraced technology in helping me train more efficiently, I have watched videos to learn new techniques and I have discussed my training with some experts for their advice.

Mike Murphy President and CEO My favorite times of the year are Spring and Summer. I love this time of the year when the weather allows us to get outside and enjoy ourselves. The last several years this has allowed me to get out on my bicycle and start getting some miles in. My goal each year is to ride at least 2000 miles between spring and fall. This gets me ready for any bike rides I might have on my schedule and gets all the winter weight I gained off. One thing I have noticed the last couple of years, and especially this year, is that even though I am doing the exact same training

I believe the same is true for our businesses. Doing the exact same thing year after year and not taking time to analyze our efforts can lead to waking up one day and wondering what’s happening, why are sales down or flat. I understand that most days you are up to your neck in the swamp with alligators and hoping to just get through the day. However, if you don’t take a step back and look at your process you might find your business is getting heavy and no longer as nimble as it needs to be to take on all the challenges it has in the business world. You need to take time and see what is new in your industry, go to a trade show, attend seminars, and talk to other experts in your field. I am not suggesting you get away from

your core beliefs or values. I always will believe it’s important to embrace your core mission and do whatever it takes to be the best at it. I am suggesting that time changes things and you don’t want to wake up one day and see that time has passed you by. In talking to several of this year’s Small Business Award (SBA) nominees, I am certain that they are keeping up with the times, like all of us should do. I am looking forward to a “GREAT 2022”, not only on my bicycle but also in seeing all your businesses grow and prosper. This year’s SBA nominees can be found on pages 8 - 11. Congratulations to all for their hard work in promoting and growing a successful business in the Springfield area.

LEADERSHIP SPRINGFIELD

DEVELOPMENT POLICY COUNCIL

Leadership Springfield (LS) is a 14 week series of half day programs in which participants gain leadership skills and in-depth exposure to critical issues affecting the Springfield area. Participants interact with community leaders and decision makers who share diverse perspectives on significant accomplishments and opportunities within the Springfield community.

One of the key roles The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce plays in the Springfield-Sangamon County area is the facilitator or convener of different groups to work toward the common goal of creating a thriving business climate. As part of that vital work we provide on behalf of the business community, The Chamber hosts monthly meetings of the Development Policy Council (DPC) which is made up of representatives from city government, county government, local developers, members of the Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance, and members of The Chamber.

APPLICATIONS DUE JUNE 30

The program aims to develop, strengthen, and equip local professionals to benefit the Springfield area. Curriculum topics for the program typically include Leadership Awareness, Agriculture, Education, Healthcare, Homeland Security, Government, Team Building, Technology & Innovation, and Tourism. The application for the Leadership Springfield Class of 2022, which begins in September, is due June 30. It is available on The Chamber’s website and must be submitted by 5:00 pm. For more information, visit www.gscc.org/leadership-springfield or contact David Earhart at (217) 525-1173 ext. 215 or dearhart@gscc.org.

6

TheCHAMBERUPDATE |

PROVIDING AN IMPORTANT SERVICE

The mission of the DPC is to develop ways to streamline the permitting and zoning challenges within the city of Springfield. The City has many major upcoming development opportunities, and it is imperative that we have a system in place to ensure that these projects can happen in a timely manner. If you have interest in the DPC or questions, please reach out to Mike Murphy at mmurphy@gscc.org or (217) 525-1173 ext. 205.

SMALL BUSINESS AWARDS LUNCHEON CELEBRATES LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS The Chamber believes supporting the work of small business owners helps our local economy and community. Over 80% of our Chamber membership consists of small businesses with less than 25 FTE employees. That’s one of many reasons The Chamber holds its annual Small Business Awards Luncheon. In its 37th year, the luncheon is an opportunity to honor the most outstanding entrepreneurs whose ingenuity, hard work and innovation have created and promoted a successful and growing business in the Springfield area. The Luncheon, presented by Hickory Point Bank, also provides a great opportunity to network with your clients and friends.

The Chamber recognized area small business owners for their outstanding achievements in four different categories at the luncheon on June 14 at the Crowne Plaza Springfield Convention Center: • Not-For-Profit Director of the Year • New & Emerging Business Owner of the Year • Small Business Owner of the Year • Lifetime Award – Business Owner of the Year Nearly 300 small business owners have been recognized over the past three decades. This year’s nominees are highlighted in this edition of the Update. Recipients of each category will be recognized in the August Update.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION AFFECTING YOUR ENERGY RATES The Chamber and CQI Associates, the nationally recognized energy management experts which manage our commercial energy co-op, believe it is our duty to inform you of the current unprecedented state of the energy market and how it will affect the price you could pay for electricity supply services over the next three to five years. Since October 2021, we are seeing historically significant increases in electricity, natural gas, and fuel oil prices. Several factors are driving the sharp increase including the shifting of U.S. energy suppliers to Europe due to the war, U.S. production deficiencies, inflation levels, and concerns rising to levels that haven’t been seen in decades. Because of this, CQI Associates is forecasting a 55% increase in the contracted electricity supply costs for new contracts over the next 36 to 48 months. In reaction to these market forces, Ameren announced their updated pricing effective June 2022 for customers who wish to remain with or return to the utility as their electricity supply service provider for the next 12 months. The

16

price rates are as follows: • Rate Class 1 Price is $0.09881 per kWh summer and $0.11636 per kWh winter • Weighted average for the year is $0.1062 per kWh • Rate Class 2 Price is $0.1184 per kWh summer and $0.12821 per kWh winter • Weighted average for the year is $0.1214 per kWh for Customers with annual KWH over 15,000 per year) • For reference: the prior 12-month average rate was $0.0625 per kWh that ended May 2022 Compounding the above, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) announced effective May 2022 a 246% rate increase for transmission and capacity service fees. The industry was expecting a 36% increase. The MISO spike in transmission and capacity prices resulted from a shortfall in generating capacity required across its Midwest region. This shortfall was due in part to the power plant closures which are part of the 2021 Illinois Omnibus Energy legislation. It is still not

TheCHAMBERUPDATE |

gscc.org

fully known how the MISO increase will impact current contract rates beginning July 2022. If this change is considered a “change in law”, you could see an increase in cost even if you have an existing fixed price agreement in place. The MISO increase will impact renewal contracts with termination dates between June 2022-May 2023 by an added 3 cents per kWh to new contact rates. CQI Associates is watching this closely while working with suppliers and law makers to make sure all information is gathered. It is imperative that you begin the new or renewal contract process immediately. Please contact Shelby Dupont with CQI Associates at shelby@cqiassociates.com or (217) 521-9400, or David Earhart at The Chamber at (217) 525-1173 ext. 215 or dearhart@ gscc.org. The Chamber’s co-op program is only available to Chamber members who receive their electric and/or natural gas services through Ameren.

HOW ROLLING BLACKOUTS & RATE INCREASES WILL AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS Zoom Meeting w/Doug Brown, Chief Utility Engineer, CWLP 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. June 20, 2022 What are rolling blackouts, and will they really happen? If so, how often and how long will my business be without power? How will my business utility bill be affected by the current energy crisis? Please join us for an Energy Update from Doug Brown, Chief Utility Engineer at CWLP, to learn more about possible rolling black outs and potential rate increases this summer. It is vital that all businesses have a contingency plan in case of temporary black outs and budget for potential rate increases. This meeting will be held via Zoom. Doug Brown will provide an initial overview of these important energy issues, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask additional questions. To register, go to www.gscc.org.
