Mike Murphy President and CEO The 2022 Gala held on March 4th was one of the first large in-person events in Springfield in almost two years. The community was ready for an event like this, as the excitement in the room was obvious to everyone there. Events like the Gala, Good Morning Springfield, and Business After Hours are needed for the physical and mental health of us as individuals and for the health of our businesses as well. The Gala allowed us to recognize the graduates of Leadership Springfield graduates of both the 2020 & 2021 classes and seeing the excitement in their faces as they reconnected with fellow graduates was heartwarming. I

It was also rewarding for me to recognize the recipients of our 2020 and 2021 Small Business Awards. I appreciate and understand what these business leaders do each and every day. The opportunities that they provide to our community sometimes goes unnoticed. It’s important to let them know we not only understand what they do but recognize those who go above and beyond for our community. This year’s President Award was presented to Tara Matheson of Impact Life. Tara has been a supporter of the Chamber for many years in several different capacities. She has been a mainstay on the Corporate Cup Challenge Committee, having served on this committee for 11 years. Tara was the Ambassador of the Year in both 2009 & 2010 and also served as

its Chairperson in 2012. She has always stepped up and helped whenever The Chamber has called upon her to do so. The Chamber Ambassador of the Year for both 2020 and 2021 were also recognized. This award is very competitive and is decided by a point system to recognize the accomplishments of the individual ambassadors. The winner for 2020 was Kenny Micheletta , Central Illinois Security, Inc. and the winner for 2021 was Sara Linn, AmeriCall Communications Company. All of the ambassadors do an outstanding job representing The Chamber at our events throughout the year. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group associated with The Chamber. Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Gala and to Presenting Sponsor PNC as well as all our other sponsors. We look forward to making next year’s Gala even more memorable.

HELP US CELEBRATE LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS The Chamber believes supporting the work of small business owners helps our local economy and community. Over 80% of our Chamber membership consists of small businesses with less than 25 FTE employees. That’s one of many reasons The Chamber holds its annual Small Business Awards Luncheon. It’s an opportunity to honor the most outstanding entrepreneurs whose ingenuity, hard work and innovation have created and promoted a successful and growing business in the Springfield area. The Luncheon also provides a great opportunity to network with your clients and friends.

Nearly 300 small business owners have been recognized at this event over the past 36 years. Nominees will be recognized for their accomplishments and successes and recipients will be announced at the Luncheon on Tuesday, June 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Springfield Convention Center. Members can register to attend at www.gscc.org. Cost to attend is $35 per person through May 24 and increases to $45 after that date. CHAMBER’S MEMBER INFORMATION CENTER SIMPLE TO USE ONLINE MARKETING TOOL Members of The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce have access to our Member Information Center (MIC), which is an online marketing tool that allows members to maximize their Chamber membership and extend the reach of their business brand.

This ‘members only’ section of the Chamber website is a simple-touse tool that gives members greater control to tell their business story, connect with other members, register for events, and pay invoices. Members can also post and view Hot Deals, job openings, events and news, which once approved, are published on The Chamber’s website and Facebook page.

How To Obtain Login Credentials A Member Login link can be found on The Chamber’s home page at www.gscc.org. A username and password is needed to access the MIC. Members can easily obtain login credentials by using the link on the login page or by contacting The Chamber at (217) 525-1173.

Members can also easily access additional information through the Resources link and manage their business profile by updating their representatives, business information and description, and keywords to enhance their search engine optimization. Your listing on our website enhances your overall Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The reason is Google loves chamber websites. It knows they consist of credible business information and aren’t trying to cheat their system. Larger chamber sites are often powerful and robust, so a direct link back to the member’s website is an

CYBERSECURITY BRIEFING HELD RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS IN MIC The Illinois Chamber recently held a briefing to highlight efforts over the past year of the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which operates under the Cyber Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The briefing specifically focuses on their efforts regarding Business Email Compromise (BEC) and Email Account Compromise (EAC) scams, Ransomware, and Tech Support Fraud. A link to this briefing and accompanying materials is now available to our members in the Member Information Center (MIC). Of the FBI’s eight (8) mission priorities, cybersecurity is ranked second and third, just behind its first priority to “Protect the U.S. from a terrorist attack”. Its second priority is to “Protect the U.S. against foreign intelligence, espionage, and cyber operations” and its third priority is “Combat significant cyber criminal activity”. The mission of the (IC3) is to provide the public with a reliable and convenient reporting mechanism to submit information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation concerning suspected Internetfacilitated criminal activity and to develop effective alliances with

industry partners. Information is processed for investigative and intelligence purposes for law enforcement and public awareness. One mechanism for this is its InfraGuard Program, a partnership between the FBI and members of the private sector for the protection of U.S. Critical Infrastructure. Information on how to become a member of InfraGuard is also available in the MIC. Additionally, the MIC contains a Ransomware Fact Sheet and Powerpoint presentations from the briefing. LEADERSHIP SPRINGFIELD APPLICATION LIVE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS JUNE 30

The application for the Leadership Springfield Class of 2022 is now available on home page of The Chamber’s website or under the Member Services menu. The deadline to submit the application is June 30. Leadership Springfield (LS) is the premier leadership training program in the Capitol City. During a 14 week series of half day programs, participants gain leadership skills and in-depth exposure to critical issues affecting the Springfield area. Participants interact with community leaders and decision makers who share diverse perspectives on significant accomplishments and opportunities within the Springfield community. The program aims to develop, strengthen and equip local professionals to benefit the Springfield area. Interactive professional development is a cornerstone of the program. Curriculum topics for the program typically include Leadership Development, Agribusiness, Education, Healthcare, Public Safety, Government, Team Building, Technology & Innovation, and Tourism.

2022 POLICY AGENDA & ADVOCACY UPDATES BOARD ADOPTS AGENDA AT FEBRUARY MEETING The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is a significant voice of and for business in Springfield and Sangamon County and has an obligation to represent the interests of its members. The Chamber supports public policy that encourages entrepreneurship, development, investment, and job creation. We oppose public policy that creates unnecessary regulation that will negatively impact the business climate and the creation of jobs. The Chamber advocates for our members by: • Working with elected officials, staff, and stakeholders to advance pro-business policies • Testifying at public meetings and hearings • Monitoring, reviewing, and when appropriate, taking positions on proposed legislation and regulations • Promoting business interests to the media The 2022 Policy Agenda was adopted by The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors during their February 2022 meeting. The policy agenda, which includes positions on

The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and Dale Carnegie Training of Greater Illinois, Inc. are partnering to offer “Leadership in a Digital Age”, a leadership development seminar presented by Steve Garland. Clearly leaders have faced some unique challenges over the last couple of years. Pressure has been applied to engagement, communication, and team dynamics by the virtual dynamics each of us navigate. RETIREMENT PLAN OFFERINGS REQUIRED NEW EMPLOYER MANDATE EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 1 Illinois state law currently requires every Illinois employer with twenty-five or more employees to offer their own retirement program, either through a private plan or through Illinois Secure Choice, a retirement program offered through the Illinois State Treasurer’s office.

The Chamber is exploring the feasibility of offering a multipleemployer or pooled employer plan for its members. If you are a member that offers such plans and are interested in providing a proposal to The Chamber, please contact Mike Murphy, President & CEO, at (217) 525-1173 ext. 205 or mmurphy@gscc.org.

However, effective November 1, 2022, the law will be expanded to include employers with as few as sixteen (16) employees. Employers who do not comply with the law will be subject to fines and penalties as described in 820 ILCS 80/85.

Employer Registration Deadlines

Employers that meet the following criteria must comply with the law: • Employ sixteen (16) or more people • Business operating at least two years • Currently do not offer a qualified saving plan such as a 401(k), SEP IRA, or Simple IRA Employers are not required to contribute financially to these programs. Employers with five (5) or more employees will be required to comply with the law effective November 1, 2023.

State law will require every employer with five or more Illinois employees to offer their own retirement program or facilitate Illinois Secure Choice. Program deadlines are based on employer size. The deadlines are below.
