Dwight Lenox and The Lenox Avenue Express

Growing up in New York, Dwight Lenox honed his talent in the church choir. He went on to study and perform musical styles as diverse as country and rock ‘n’ roll. But his gospel roots, combined with such childhood influences as Nancy Wilson, Nat King Cole and Sarah Vaughn, made jazz a natural showcase for his talent. From blues to ballads and jazz to swing, Dwight shines. His impeccable instinct and mellow sound has garnered the attention of some of the finest musicians in the industry. He has performed with Sammy Tucker and renowned organist Hank Marr. He has also been showcased alongside the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Bobbie Humphrys, Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Mann, and is one of only two singers to perform with the Ohio State Marching Band, and his rendition of “Georgia On My Mind” is on the band’s new compact disc. Dwight’s fluid style lends itself to a vast repertoire from Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, James Ingram, Stevie Wonder, Lou Rawls and many more. But his raw abilities are uniquely evidenced in his performance of original music. He has sung on numerous recordings, including his own albums and works for commercial and corporate use, and is an accomplished studio session singer. And not surprisingly, Dwight is a talented songwriter himself. Dwight’s career has taken him from New York to LA to the heart of the Midwest. Livingston Taylor

After too many years of absence, Livingston Taylor returns to the Summer Arts Festival. Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of 13, beginning a 40-year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting and teaching. Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, Livingston is the fourth child in a very musical family that includes Alex, James, Kate and Hugh. He recorded his first record at the age of 18 and has continued to create well crafted, introspective, and original songs that have earned him listeners worldwide. From top-40 hits “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running,” to “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman,” both recorded by his brother James, Livingston’s creative output has continued unabated. His musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire, and he is equally at home with a range of musical genres—folk, pop, gospel, jazz—and from upbeat storytelling to touching ballads. Livingston has never stopped performing since his early coffeehouse days, touring with major artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett and Jethro Tull, and he maintains a busy concert schedule. A natural performer, Livingston peppers his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth that connect him to his fans. A full professor at Berklee College of Music, where he has taught a Stage Performance course since 1989, Livingston teaches young artists invaluable lessons learned over the course of an extensive career on the road; the course is consistently voted the most popular at the College. His latest album, Blue Sky, was released in the spring of 2014. It is the third in a series of albums over the last decade that includes There You Are Again (2005) and Last Alaska Moon (2009). Shalom! When I was in high school I had an eccentric yet amazing Director who always gave us the history and backstory of whatever show we were doing. We learned about the Guadalcanal as we sang “Nothing Like a Dame.” We learned about the life of Cole Porter and Bill Shakespeare as we sang, “It’s Too Darn Hot.” It made the show meaningful and added a deeper purpose for why we entertain. If you are at all interested in a brief history of Tevye the milkman, please indulge me for a moment. The story is set in 1905 Russia. Nicholas Romanov is in power. The Communist Manifesto has been in circulation for 50 years and has gained enthusiasts such as Vladimir Lenin and Perchik. While Anatevka may be a fictitious scene for our musical to unfold, Shtetls, small Jewish-populated villages, were found all over Eastern Europe. These were poor, rural towns that were slowly being wiped off the Russian map. Beginning in the late 19th century, the Russian government began creating discriminatory laws against the Jewish people. Pogroms, the organized murder of a minority, were common at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1881, there were 166 pogroms resulting in the death of over 1500 Jews. An average of 4 Jewish lives per day were taken by hatred and prejudice. This statistic explains why Tevye was so discouraged to hear of a possible pogrom in Anatevka. When we first meet this crazy Communist named Perchik, the villagers are discussing actual events. The removal of Jews in Odessa (a town in modern day Ukraine) happened. This same region experienced a mass murder of Jews during WWII. It is estimated that 25,000 to 34,000 were killed in this event alone. 51

As Tevye and his family try to hang on to their way of life, they come to the realization they will not escape the prejudice of the Russian government. The final scene leaves us with the family in search of sanctuary. We learn that Fyedka and Chava are going to Cracow in Southeast Poland. While this is speculation, our two characters could not have found a worse place to go. The Krakow (Cracow) Ghetto had been in existence since the first century as a Jewish settlement. In 1941 it is estimated that almost 20,000 Jews lived in Cracow. By 1946, nearly 10,000 were killed by the SS’s extermination. Motel and Tzietel did not fare much better. Their plan being to save enough money until they are able to come to America, they move to Poland. From 1939 to 1946, it is estimated that nearly 3 million Jews were killed in Poland. Ironically, Perchik and Hodel probably were the safest of Tevye’s children in Siberia. Of course, these are merely characters in Shalom Aleichem’s story, however, this is a story worth telling. The atrocity of genocide to any people cannot be something we forget. By telling this story we honor the tumble down, work a day lives of the folks in Anatevka. Shalom Aleichem, the author of our story, is not just a name, but a phrase. This phrase translates into “Peace be upon you.” Peace not being simply the absence of war, but the fullness of life and life more abundantly. Shalom Aliechem, Brandon M. Williams

The 122nd Ohio Army National Guard Band

Since 1944, the Ohio National Guard’s 122nd Army Band has been a staple of the musical tradition of the United States military in Ohio. Members of the unit hail from every corner of Ohio (plus a few from other states) and are charged with carrying out the mission of strengthening troop morale and building a positive connection between the public and the Ohio National Guard. As one of the finest National Guard bands in the nation, the 122nd utilizes its resources to perform dozens of missions each year across the state. Citizens, soldiers, and musicians alike all agree that the 122nd Army Band is one of the leading groups of its kind in the nation. The 122nd’s main performing groups — the Concert Band, Rock Band, Brass Quintet, and Ceremonial Band — perform for a wide variety of audiences, ranging from military ceremonies to parades and traditional summer concerts for the public. As an Army Band, the 122nd provides musical support throughout the full spectrum of military operations to instill in our Soldiers the will to fight and win, to foster the support of our Citizens, and to promote our national interests at home and abroad. As an Army unit, the 122nd Army Band and its members are held to the same standards as Soldiers in the rest of the Army National Guard and the active duty Army, in addition to maintaining their musical proficiency.

The General Guinness Band and Lone Raven

Two of Ohio’s premier bands return to Springfield for a one-night celebration of traditional and not-so traditional Celtic music in the park! Performing together since 1980, the General Guinness Band combines Irish ballads with energetic fiddle tunes and Irish step dancing. As they weave ballads and dance music into a single selection, the band’s riveting instrumentals, complex arrangements, and step dancing intensify their vocal renditions of numerous hard-to-find songs going back nearly 500 years. These richly told stories in song also incorporate humor and provide insight into the charming lore and myth of the Irish. The variety of instruments played includes fiddle, tin whistles, Irish flute, guitar, bodhran (Irish drum), and Irish bouzouki. Rapidly becoming one of the top bands in the Midwest, Lone Raven performs an eclectic blend of traditional music from the Celtic lands and various areas of the world, as well as their own original compositions. With over 20 instruments on stage, the band soars through everything from fiery Irish Reels to Gypsy Fiddle Tunes to haunting airs. Their instrumentals are fueled by the award-winning guitar playing of Neil Jacobs, the twin fiddles of Elizabeth Blickenstaff and Kara Markley, while being driven by an explosive rhythm section of Craig Markley and Sid Omasta. In addition, Kara’s breathtaking and expressive vocals are featured throughout each performance, with Elizabeth and Craig adding the perfect harmony blend.

The Springfield Arts Council’s Summer Arts Festival invites you to an evening with “the band without instruments – Scott, Ryan, Jim, Maurice and Geoff – known by their many fans as Fourth Avenue. Fourth Avenue is a professional a cappella group based in Dayton, Ohio that has been sharing their high-energy show with audiences since 1993. This group has been entertaining audiences with concerts featuring a wide variety of familiar favorites from different eras, as well as catchy original music performed with their unique approach. Fourth Avenue has shared the stage with such national acts as The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Styx and Three Dog Night. Since their Tenth Anniversary in 2003, the group continues to be acknowledged for artistic excellence and to perform nationally and internationally. In 2003, Fourth Avenue was nominated again for a Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for Best Pop/Rock Cover song for their rendition of Fade to Grey, which appears on their album, Scrapbook. They performed in the Netherlands for Holland America Cruise Line’s 130th Anniversary, and enjoyed commercial success with a regional ad campaign for Safe Auto Insurance in 2003, 2004 and 2006. Fourth Avenue’s latest CD, high energy harmony, was picked as one of the TOP 25 LOCAL CDs of 2007 by the Dayton Daily News. In 2008 and 2009, Fourth Avenue was invited to perform for Michigan’s Governor. Incredible harmony, audience participation, outrageous humor and a fully choreographed stage show are all part of the musical extravaganza!

The Summer Arts Festival welcomes back hometown favorite Griffin House! Born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, where his father worked in a tire shop and his mother helped place children with foster families, the athletically-gifted House landed a role in a musical in high school and was surprised to learn that he had a natural talent for singing. He bought his first guitar for $100 from a friend, turned down a golf scholarship to Ohio University and instead went to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and started to teach himself how to play the guitar and write songs. House began writing and recording and issued his first independent release, Upland, in 2003. His music attracted attention from Nettwerk, a Vancouverbased management company and record label, and House partnered with the label’s American branch to issue Lost & Found in 2004. Several selfreleased albums followed; in 2008 he released Flying Upside Down, and recently House has released The Learner. House has toured extensively, opening for artists such as Ron Sexsmith, Patti Scialfa, Josh Ritter, John Mellencamp, and Mat Kearney. While Griffin headlines nationally, he remains a Summer Arts Festival favorite!

In the 20+ years that they have been recording and performing as a band, they have accomplished something that for most artists is only a dream: they have built a career with a solid foundation, seemingly impenetrable by the shifting sands of the record industry and the economy. Sister Hazel has built an empire of ‘Hazelnuts’ through savvy marketing, hard work and plain-old, undeniable talent. From a musical perspective, the band has always had the same approach to the creative process: wellcrafted, hook-infused songs complimented by solid instrumentation and lush harmony vocals. The band is named after a now-famous missionary from the Gainesville, FL area who has dedicated her life to making a difference in the lives of her fellow humans. Lyrics For Life is a charity founded by singer Ken Block as a memorial for his younger brother, Jeffrey. Jefferson Starship, founded by Rock Hall of Fame inductee Paul Kantner (who also founded Jefferson Airplane) and David Freiberg (who also founded Quicksilver Messenger Service), soared into their 40th year in 2014, carrying one of rock music’s greatest legacies and halcyon repertoires… and they join us to close the 2015 Summer Arts Festival! The Airplane were the biggest rock group in America during the 1960s and the first San Francisco band to sign a major record deal, paving the way for other legends like Grateful Dead & Janis Joplin. They headlined the original Woodstock Festival in 1969 and like The Beatles, with whom they are critically compared, lasted a mere 7 years, though their influence and impact on rock music continues well into the 21st century. Recent television specials on PBS and HDNet have only furthered the legendary band’s following. As genuine American good will ambassadors, they have brought the soundtrack of a generation - including ”Somebody to Love,” “White Rabbit,” “Count on Me,”and ”Find Your Way Back” to thirty countries on four continents, including Brazil, Japan, Israel and Serbia at the invitation of the American Embassy.
