ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE “Be careful what you wish for,” as Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s cockeyed fairytale comes to life in this adaptation of their groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical. Into The Woods JR. features all of your favorite characters - Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch in this lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables.

The musical centers on the Baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of the Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever.

Into The Woods Jr. showcases an ensemble of talented young singers, actors, dancers and crew, with a “Junior” score adapted to be more accessible to young performers.

The young people engaged in this production as performers and crew are participants in the Springfield Arts Council’s Youth Arts Ambassadors program, which encourages self-confidence, responsibility, creativity, and teamwork through participation and interest in the performing arts.

Students from many area schools auditioned for their roles over two months ago. A production team of adult mentors and student assistants, have rehearsed many hours to bring you this performance to life. We’re certain you’ll appreciate and enjoy their dedication and talent!

From Ridgewood School (The Little School in the Woods)

Originally called ‘The Little School in the Woods,’ Ridgewood School recently received commendations from both The Ohio State Senate and the Ohio House of Representatives. Legislators proclaimed Ridgewood School as the oldest co-educational independent day school in the state of Ohio. Established in 1918, Ridgewood School is praised for its continued commitment to instilling a love, desire and dedication to scholastics, global diversity, and academic achievement.

MEET THE CAST & CREW - “INTO THE WOODS JR.” Natalie Berry (Grandma & Photography Team) Northridge Middle School - 6th Grade - Natalie has been in 2 other shows; Seussical Jr. and Little Mermaid Jr. Natalie loves to draw, sing and dance. She would like to thank all of her friends and family for supporting her.

Anna Bielawski (Rapunzel & Assistant Music Director) Home School - 7th Grade - Anna has been performing for local audiences over the past 7 years. Most recently, she was cast as “Flounder” in Springfield Jr. Civic Theater’s The Little Mermaid Jr., “Gertrude McFuzz” in the Springfield Arts Council’s Seussical Jr., and “Annie” in Springfield Jr Civic Theater’s Dear Edwina, Jr. In addition to playing the role of “Rapunzel”, Anna has served as Assistant Music Director for this production, an experience she has thoroughly enjoyed. When she is not performing, Anna enjoys sewing, reading, singing and relaxing with her friends. Anna would like to thank Krissy Hartman, Mr. Kent (Brooks), and Jordan Taylor for having faith in her and giving her this wonderful opportunity!

Tim Compston (Jack) Kenwood Elementary - 6th Grade - My name is Tim Compston. I’m 11 years old and love to perform in the arts. My first show was Willy Wonka and since then I’ve performed in Dear Edwina Jr., was cast as the Prince in Little Mermaid Jr., Fiddler on the Roof, 2 Boarshead Feasts, and was cast in the traveling production of Camelot. I’m currently reading for Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf. I’d like to thank my drama teacher Ms. Craig and my friends and family for their support!

Rosalia Dalton (Narrator & Assistant Make-up Designer) South Vienna Middle School - 7th Grade - Rosalia is a 7th grader at SVMS. She likes drawing and singing.

Anna Deever (Lucinda) Snowhill School - 5th Grade - Anna Deever has dance company and ballet every Monday and every Tuesday Hip-hop. Anna Deever likes to be outside and loves animals. This is Anna Deever’s first play and she is excited about it.

William Deever (Cinderella’s Father) Roosevelt Middle School - 7th Grade - I am a super nerd, I love school (especially math). I’ve danced since 1st grade or so. This is my first theatre production so I hope it’ll be fun.

Jace Elliott (Rapunzel’s Prince) Nightingale Montessori - 11th grade - Jace is no stranger to the stage, having been involved in OPAI’s production of Wizard of Wonderland and the A.B. Graham student theatre program in the past. He currently attends Nightingale Montessori, with intentions of pursuing a degree in English.

Donovan Geer (Baker) Shawnee High School - 9th Grade Donovan loves music, especially playing in band. He plays the saxophone and is in the marching band. His last performance was in his middle school musical as Shrek. Donovan hopes to continue in the arts as a career.

Jenny Hillard (Florinda) Nightingale Montessori - 10th Grade - Jenny loves to act, sing, and dance. This is her fifth show. Jenny has also been in Willy Wonka, Dorothy Meets Alice, Seussical Jr., and The Little Mermaid Jr. Raymond Jones (Cinderella’s Prince) Home School - 10th Grade - Raymond is a piano and vocal prodigy.

Being able to play over 10 instruments, he has performed in choirs, composed his own music, and even started his own band. He has played an Arabian in “The Nutcracker” and also the Prince of Aragon in “Merchant of Venice”. He thanks his family, friends, and his employers for their support.

Eleni Linardos (Jack’s Mother) Ridgewood School - 5th Grade - Eleni is just realizing her love of the theater. She has performed as Mrs. Gloup in Willy Wonka Jr. and Cook #1, the soloist, in Harmony High. She is proudly following in the footsteps of her third favorite cousin, Saundra Laventzis. She looks forward to many more fun and exciting roles in the future.

Zane J. Mohler (Mysterious Man) Catholic Central - 7th Grade - Zane J. Mohler is a seventh grader at Catholic Central Middle School. He is thirteen years old and he lives in Springfield with his parents, brother and two sisters. Into the Woods, Jr. is his third play. Zane also enjoys playing basketball, soccer, and golf. In his spare time, he likes to read, practice basketball and play video games.

Kolton Rice (The Wolf) Possum Middle School - 8th Grade - I’m Kolton Rice and my previous shows have been Little Mermaid (2x), Music Man, Mulan, Dear Edwina, and How to Eat Like a Child. I enjoy performing magic, ventriloquism and juggling.

Jordan Matthew Rodgers (Steward) Ridgewood School - 5th Grade - This is Jordan’s first theatre experience although he has always enjoyed dancing and singing with his friends and family. He is in his second year of ice skating classes at Chillers Springfield and recently skated in their Christmas performance. In the past he has also participated in swimming, karate, and gymnastics.

Ava Seall (Little Red Ridinghood) Catholic Central - 6th Grade - Ava loves singing, dancing, and acting. This is her first performance she has ever done. She would like to thank her parents for encouraging her to try out.

Mariah Sweeney (Cinderalla’s Stepmother) Catholic Central - 6th Grade - Mariah loves cheer and tumbling. Mariah also loves acting. Mariah was in Seussical Jr. Mariah thanks her parents for letting her have this experience!

Ava Sullivan (Baker’s Wife) Catholic Central - 6th Grade - Ava is 12 years old. She has been involved with theatre since age 6 when she played Molly in “Annie”.

Other roles include: Jessie in “Annie Get Your Gun”, Blue Fairy in “Pinocchio”, Edwina in “Dear Edwina”, Sebastien in “The Little Mermaid”, and Chava in “Fiddler on the Roof”. Shows also include: Thoroughly Modern Millie, Alice in Wonderland, Nutcracker, The Wizard of Oz, How to Eat Like a Child, Oliver, and Oklahoma. She would like to thank all who participated with the making of this show and her family for all their love and support. Break a leg!

Olivia Warax (Witch) Reid Middle School - 8th Grade - Olivia likes to run track and cross country. She also enjoys archery. Olivia has been in many minor plays and is currently in “The Sound of Music”. She would like to thank the rest of the cast and directors.

Grace Whetstone (Cinderella) Northridge - 7th Grade - Grace has been in two previous musicals, Seussical, Jr. and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She performs in choir, honor choir, band, and jazz band. Grace enjoys reading and writing. She would like to thank her choir teacher, Mrs. Buckley, and her parents for supporting her, as well as her grandmother for passing down the “musical gene.”

Molly Whetstone (Cinderella’s Mother & Voice of Milky White) Northridge - 7th Grade - Molly has been in two previous musicals, Seussical, Jr. and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She performs in choir, honor choir, band, and jazz band. Molly enjoys to read and is also involved in soccer. She would like to thank her mom and dad for taking her to all of her rehearsals and her choir teacher, Mrs. Buckley, for all of her musical advice.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS - “INTO THE WOODS, JR.” Lauren Allen (Photography team) South Vienna Middle School - 8th grade - I have been in many shows such as Oliver, Alice in Wonderland Jr, Nutcracker 2013 & 2014, Pinocchio del arte, How to Eat like a Child, Boarshead Feaste 2014 2015 2016, Guys and Dolls Jr, Dear Edwina Jr, Six Characters in search of an Author, Sound of Music, Seussical Jr, and Little Mermaid Jr. For this show, I decided to work backstage so that I can learn all aspects of theatre.

CJ Beuhler (Tech Team) East Dayton Christian School - 8th Grade - This is CJ Buehler’s first production and he is excited to be part of the Springfield Arts Youth technical team for the Into the Woods production. CJ attends East Dayton Christian School where he plays drums as part of the Worship Band. He supports the technical team at his church videoing and editing the weekly sermons and uploading them to the website. In his spare time he enjoys BMX and video games Kyla Collins (Assistant Choreographer) Northridge - 7th Grade - Kyla is so excited to be a part of this show as assistant choreographer! She is a Youth Arts Ambassador and Into the Woods is her first chance to help put a show together. She has been in multiple other Summer Arts Festival shows including Annie, The Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka, and Fiddler on the Roof. She has also been in many church and OPAI musicals. She is 12 and is in 7th grade at Northridge Middle School!

Piper Pruitt (Set Crew) South Vienna Middle School - 6th grade - I play basketball and bowl. This is my first year as a Springfield Arts Council Youth Arts Ambassador. I am very excited to be a part of this production.

Miranda Taylor (Costumer) Kenton Ridge High School -11th Grade - Miranda Taylor has worked as an assistant on costumes for Fiddler on the Roof and Seussical Jr., as well as being a chorus member in Godspell.

Andrew Weber (Assistant Director) West Jefferson High School - 10th grade - Andrew Weber is a sophomore at WJHS who loves singing, acting and collecting sneakers. Andrew was previously in Grease and Seussical Jr. He is currently playing Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at his high school. Andrew is in the Columbus Children’s Choir, New World Singers. He would like to thank Krissy for giving him this experience and his parents for driving him 45 minutes every day.

Sarah Wilson (Stage Manager) Kenton Ridge High School - 11th grade - Sarah joined Youth Arts Ambassadors last year and was hooked. The theater is a great atmosphere to be in. Even though she has only been in one musical, she loves working behind the scenes of them.

Notes from the Director…

Welcome to the very first musical produced by the Springfield Arts Council’s Youth Arts Ambassador program. Last summer, I began brainstorming about artistic opportunities I thought would benefit the youth in Clark County, and thinking about what kind of things I wished had been available to me when I was a young, aspiring performing artist. After many conversations with Jordan Taylor (SAC Production Manager) and Tim Rowe (SAC Managing Artistic Director,) this new version of the Youth Arts Ambassador program was born.

This program promotes not only growth as an artist, but aims to assist these students in developing leadership skills, professional skills, and the ability to work with a group of peers as a team. This particular group of Youth Arts Ambassadors have far exceeded my hopes and expectations in terms of how successful this program can be!

I could talk for hours about how proud I am of each and every cast and crew member! When I say that this show is produced by the Youth Arts Ambassadors, I truly mean that every detail of this show has been put together by these middle and high school students.

Each aspect of the show has been overseen by an adult mentor; but we have had rehearsals run solely by the assistants, the set was built by the entire cast and assistants, the costume design was by a high school student, and the list goes on and on. This group of 30 or so 12

kids have put their heart and soul into this wonderful piece of theater.

Not to mention, the music of Stephen Sondheim is notoriously some of the hardest music in musical theater, and this cast has done an amazing job of mastering Into the Woods, Jr. They say “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” and that is certainly the case with this cast and their parents. I cannot say “thank you” enough to truly express how thankful I am to all of the parents and families involved in this production! Anytime I have said, “Can we have help with…?” I have at least half of the casts’ parents volunteering to help with whatever we need and more. This production couldn’t happen without all of your love and support, so thank you for being absolutely incredible throughout this process.

The same goes for Ridgewood School, Wittenberg University and Miami East High School. Thank you for your donations of space, equipment, costumes, time and anything else we needed. We have had an amazing experience partnering with Ridgewood School on the production and I believe Springfield is blessed to have a school so willing to help our organization promote Arts Education.

To the many community members who have jumped in to assist, thank you as well. It’s amazing to have such a supportive arts community in Springfield, full of people who see the benefits of the Youth Arts Ambassador program and are passionate about keeping the arts alive.

Finally, thank you, audience members, for being here! By attending, you are showing the importance of the arts to our young people. I appreciate that so much, and I know the cast does too. I hope you enjoy every moment of this fun and challenging show. You know the characters, you may not know this part of their story, but I know you will love the interpretations these young actors have worked on.
