Your generosity makes the Summer Arts Festival a community tradition! While ticket sales, Summer Arts Festival “hat collections” and program advertising help to support the Springfield Arts Council’s work, the remainder of the financial support is generously provided by the generous donations of people like you. Fulfilling our mission to “build a better community by sharing the performing arts with all citizens of Springfield, Clark County, and the region,” and providing programs of the Springfield Arts Council, including the Summer Arts Festival, Arts in Education, and the Broadway and Beyond Series, is possible only with your support! Thank you for keeping our tradition vibrant and alive!

Griffin House

What better way to kick off the Summer Arts Festival than to welcome back Springfield’s hometown favorite, singer-songwriter Griffin House! Born and raised in Springfield, where his father worked in a tire shop and his mother helped place children with foster families, the athletically-gifted Griffin House landed a role in a musical in high school and was surprised to learn that he had a natural talent for singing. Recording and performing for over a decade, House has toured with Ron Sexsmith, Patti Scialfa, Josh Ritter, John Mellencamp, Mat Kearney, and The Cranberries. He received early critical acclaim on the CBS Sunday Morning, and his songs have since been featured in countless films and television shows such as One Tree Hill, Army Wives, and Brothers and Sisters. He has also appeared on Late Night with Craig Ferguson. Recently, CNN Newsroom invited House to perform “Paris Calling,” from So On and So Forth, live on the air, and the song has been picked up by radio prior to being serviced. House has released ten albums and continues to headline his own national tours. Residing in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife Jane and their two daughters, Griffin headlines nationally, and remains a Summer Arts Festival favorite! EVENT SPONSORS

The Springfield Symphony Orchestra

“The baroque era inspired some of the greatest music in history. Beyond the music, Bach, Handel, and Lully were feisty fellows, indeed, one spending time in jail, another’s popularity causing a three hour traffic jam outside his concert, and one succumbing to wounds accidentally self-inflicted during a performance!,” says Maestro Peter Stafford Wilson. “This joyful, uplifting music will be performed, some of it as intended for an outdoor setting, by the artists of the Springfield Symphony and accompanied by a fireworks display.”

— PROGRAM — Overture to L’Orfeo Claudio Montiverdi Orchestral Suite No. 2 in b minor BWV 1067 Johann Sebastian Bach Suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Would-be Gentleman) Jean Baptiste Lully — INTERMISSION — The Water Music George Frederick Handel Music for the Royal Fireworks George Frederick Handel (arr. Baines and Mackerras) Concert pyrotechnics: Hamburg Fireworks, Ken Sprague Pyrotechnics Sponsors: Always Sunny Realty and Dhingra Orthodontics

Brass Transit - The Musical Legacy of CHICAGO Sip of Summer Wine and Beer Tasting begins at 5:00 PM

Brass Transit - The Musical Legacy of CHICAGO returns to the Summer Arts Festival’s Turner Pavilion stage! What happens when eight of Canada’s most in-demand musicians and singers gather together out of a common love for the greatest jazz-rock group of all time? You get Brass Transit - Toronto’s dynamic, crowdpleasing, studio-tight Chicago tribute, including all the hits from Chicago’s golden age! With a world-class horn section, a rocking rhythm section and vocals stacked sky-high, Brass Transit transports its audience back to the freewheeling days of the seventies. The band includes veterans of the Hallof-Fame rock and soul acts like the Drifters, Sam and Dave, Aretha Franklin, Ben E. King, the Marvelettes, Frankie Valli, Mary Wilson, Martha Reeves, Little Anthony & the Imperials, Del Shannon and the Mamas and the Papas. Brass Transit’s performances have been so impressive, that even the members of Chicago began to take notice.“The guys from Chicago invited us out to a few shows,” said Tony Carlucci, trumpet player with Brass Transit. “It’s developed into this little relationship. Anytime both bands are in the same area, we’ve gotten together. They’ve become fans of the band, and especially of our lead singer, Neil. They are in awe of him and what he has been able to do.” You’ll be in awe of the incredible musical legacy of Chicago as performed by Brass Transit! EVENT CO-SPONSORS

Urban Jazz Coalition

Sip of Summer Wine and Beer Tasting begins at 5:00 PM

Urban Jazz Coalition has electrified audiences for years performing their unique and energetic blend of R&B/Jazz/Fusion at a multitude of prominent jazz festivals around the country, including The Capital Jazz Festival, The Seabreeze Jazz Festival, Capital Jazz Fest Supercruise, The Boscov/Berks Jazz Festival, The Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival, Jazz Fest West, The Russian River Jazz Festival, River Raisin Jazz Festival, and many more. JazzTimes Magazine award winning columnist, Brian Soergel, has described Urban Jazz Coalition sound as “flush with rhythmic grooves, funky bass lines, and beautiful melodies”. The band has also made a strong impression at radio with three consecutive releases achieving “Top 30” status on multiple contemporary jazz charts. UJC’s music has been featured on network television programming, international film soundtracks, national advertising campaigns, and as part of an eclectic group of artists on a Gospel/Jazz compilation project released by Capitol/EMI Records. In addition to the notoriety that UJC has earned as a self contained group, they have also become one of the most in-demand backing groups in the smooth jazz genre, having performed as sidemen for a number of top contemporary jazz artists. When asked why this group has generated so much excitement in smooth jazz circles, former Radio & Records chart columnist Carol Archer said, “A lot of artists aspire to sound as tight and as funky as Urban Jazz Coalition, but these gentlemen really do pull it off.”

The Springfield Arts Council presents

Book and Lyrics by Music by Eric Idle John Du Prez & Eric Idle A new musical lovingly ripped off from the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”

From the original screenplay by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin

The video or audio recording of this performance by any means is strictly prohibited. Monty Python’s SPAMALOT is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials are supplied by Theatrical Rights Worldwide, 1180 Avenue of the Americas, Suite 640, New York, NY 10036. (866) 378-9758 www.theatricalrights.com SPAM® is a registered trademark of Hormel Foods LLC SPAMALOT, winner of three Tony Awards including Best Musical (2005), pokes fun at almost everyone and everything. It is most appropriate for children 12 and older (parental discretion advised) who can appreciate the unique Pythonesque sense of humor that – without apology – can appear cheeky, impertinent, irreverent, disrespectful, and sometimes just plain rude… but to the sophisticated and discerning eye, it is silliness raised to an art form and all good fun. But, please, if you are easily offended, take King Arthur’s advice and “Run away!’” Otherwise, enjoy the silliness! EVENT SPONSORS

Join us for this unprecedented time of worship and praise in the center of our city. As we raise our collective voices before God, we offer up a sacrifice of praise that unites us together and invites the presence of God to permeate the very air we breathe. The Dark Star Orchestra

Performing to critical acclaim celebrating their 20th anniversary year in 2017 and over 2600 shows, Dark Star Orchestra continues the Grateful Dead concert experience. Shows are built off the Dead’s extensive catalog and the talent of these seven fine musicians. On any given night, the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Dead’s 30 years of touring, or use their catalog to program a unique set list. By recreating lists from the past, and developing their own sets of Dead songs, DSO offers a continually evolving artistic outlet within this musical canon. Honoring both the band and the fans, Dark Star Orchestra’s members seek out the unique style and sound of each era while simultaneously offering their own informed improvisations. Dark Star Orchestra offers much more than the sound of the Grateful Dead, they truly encapsulate the energy and the experience. It’s about a sense of familiarity. It’s about a feeling that grabs listeners and takes over... in short, it’s about the complete experience and consistent quality show that the fan receives when attending a Dark Star Orchestra show. In addition to appearing at some of the nation’s top festivals, Dark Star Orchestra hosts its own annual music festival and campaign gathering, titled the ‘Dark Star Jubilee’, currently in its sixth year, where DSO headlines all three nights and are joined by a mix of established and up and coming national touring acts. “For us it’s a chance to recreate some of the magic that was created for us over the years,” rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rob Eaton explains. “We offer a sort of a historical perspective at what it might have been like to go to a show in 1985, 1978 or whenever. Even for Deadheads who can say they’ve been to a hundred shows in the 90s, we offer something they never got to see live.” Event Partner

Animal Grace and The Temps

Animal Grace is a hard rock original/cover band based in Springfield, Ohio. The band was which formed in early 1988 by guitarist and lead vocalist Tony Powell. Over the past twenty five+ years the band has undergone several member changes but has always remained committed to quality Rock & Roll. The band attributes its longevity to remaining diverse and creative, and having a deep desire to entertain. Animal Grace has performed throughout the Midwest, including clubs in Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, and most of Ohio. Their live performances are based on superb musicianship, focused intensity and a hunger to please the crowd. They continue to record in the studio, and perform live, booking shows for 2017 and beyond. Animal Grace has long been a Springfield favorite! The nerdy, yet irresistible musical geniuses (and self-proclaimed “Smartest Band in the Midwest”) The Temps hail from Ohio. Their collective inability to stick with full-time employment sparked the genesis of this high energy, dance rock band. Although ultra comfortable with data entry and mall security work, The Temps work best on stage, entertaining the masses with their upbeat renditions of dance cover music from the 80’s to today. Their uncanny and clever mix of music genres stretches from The Black Keys, Johnny Cash, and Green Day to Michael Jackson, Flogging Molly, and Lady Gaga. Their fans, many of whom frequent shows in “I love Nerds” and “Talk Nerdy to me” t-shirts, have come to expect the unexpected from the “fab” foursome. From the beginning of the show when the band runs on stage, until simultaneously stripping out of their office attire (on stage) down to their matching necktie t-shirts, The Temps are sure to quench their fans’ thirst for entertainment! 65

Rewind into the 60s and 70s to dance, sing and relive your passion for McCartney with a band that has opened for Mariah Carey, performed sold-out shows across Canada and been featured on CNN. The McCartney Years is a period-true, technically stunning and explosive live concert show that performs the music of Paul McCartney spanning two decades from The Beatles to Wings. Songs include hits like Hey Jude, Jet, Let It Be, Band On The Run, The Long And Winding Road, Live And Let Die, Lady Madonna and many, many more, plus some of the deep cuts that McCartney wrote during the 1960’s and 1970’s; all performed to their original arrangements by a band that has performed to audiences worldwide and even has a personal accolade from former Wings Guitarist Denny Laine. Whether he plays an original Beatles Era Hofner bass or sports the same wardrobe from the ‘Wings over America’ mid-1970s tour, lead vocalist Yuri Pool is true to Sir Paul in his musicianship, vocals and presentation. And the band doesn’t miss a beat delivering a texture that will transport you back to the first time you heard these great songs on vinyl. Parrots of the Caribbean

Pull out your flip-flops, put on your Hawaiian shirt, and get ready for a change of attitude as The Parrots of the Caribbean return to Veteran’s Park for our annual Parrothead Party in the Park! Parrots of the Caribbean delight audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada. Along with your favorite Buffett hits, they perform the acclaimed original hits from their CD “Cool Bayou,” a Trop-Rock Island blend of Zydeco, Rock, Country, and Patriotic flair that will have you up and dancing all night long.

Lead Singer and harmonica player Dave Albrecht - aka J.B. - bought his first harmonica at age 18, and by 30 had landed a front-man position impersonating Dan Akyroyd’s “Elwood Blues” character in a nine-piece Blues Brothers Tribute. For the next five years, that band traveled the US. Soon after, Dave signed with “Legends in Concert,” a top-ranked show of impersonators at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas. However, Dave had been long-inspired by his love for the music of Jimmy Buffett, and took his passion in a new direction. He gathered some of the finest seasoned musicians, including Dave Cousino on guitar, Brian Batchelor-Glader on keyboards, Greg Martin on percussion, and Gary Rigmaiden on bass, for The Parrots of the Caribbean, and over the last seven years has earned acclaim as the #1 Jimmy Buffett tribute act in the country! Gospel Music Workshop of America - Dayton Chapter with special guest Hayden C. Jackson

The Gospel Music Workshop of America is an international musical organization founded and chaired by the late Reverend James Cleveland in 1967. Its purpose is to promote African-American gospel music through academics, workshops, performances and new artist development. The Dayton Chapter was formed in 1972 under the leadership of the late Reverend Isaac Douglas and the late Charles Vaughn. Today, the Dayton Chapter celebrates its 45th year of existence, providing services to local churches seeking musicians, maintaining affiliation with the GMWA national organization, providing workshops & seminars for up-andcoming church choir conductors, soloists and instrumentalists, and providing college credit courses and celebrating gospel music through concerts and other worship performance opportunities. The Dayton Chapter has been labeled a “model chapter” because of its commitment to sharing and spreading the gospel music genre nationwide. We are always seeking new members who simply love gospel music! Come join us. All are welcome! Springfield native Hayden C. Jackson developed a love of music at a very early age. By the age of eight, he began playing the piano “by ear.” During his early years, he was mentored by the area’s best piano teachers, Mrs. Anna Gee Blackwell-Hagans and Lydia Smith-Lockwood, his high school music instructor. At the age of 11 years old, Hayden began mastering the piano playing a very unique variety and blend of gospel music ranging from old spirituals and hymns, traditional and contemporary with a hint of classical. At age 13, Hayden became the full-time minister of music at a local church. He currently plays for his home church and is the founder and director of the Gospel Music Explosion Choir, a choir comprised of members of various faiths and ages. The Lord continues to bless Hayden to perform at various gospel music and religious conferences, conventions, seminars, and venues. In his free time, he enjoys reading, travel, fashion and is an avid golfer. 77

Squirrel Nut Zippers

It was about 20 years ago when NPR’s “Morning Edition” said: “It’s not easy to categorize the music of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, except that it’s hot.” 2016 marked the 20th anniversary of the Squirrel Nut Zippers most celebrated and commercially successful album Hot. Originally released in the summer of 1996, Hot was the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed debut The Inevitable. By this time the group had already established a substantial live following across the country thanks to early support from NPR, college radio and non-commercial stations. Hot wound up selling over 1.3 million copies. In honor of the 20th anniversary of Hot, the bands visionary creator Jimbo Mathus, along with founding member and partner Chris Phillips (drums) have crafted a brand new stage show including several leading musicians from New Orleans to serve up the bands unique musical flavor which owes its roots to that city. Fans are clearly excited the band are touring again. “We are humbled and incredibly excited by the initial Zippers shows since the re-launch,” Mathus commented. “It’s not a reunion, it’s a revival! The band includes cutting edge talent from New Orleans and the songs have been brought to life in an exciting new way. But most things remain unchanged… An amazing experience for young and old.” Plans are underway for the band to record a brand new album, which would be their first new studio album in seventeen years.
