Phil Dirt and the Dozers

Phil Dirt and the Dozers, America’s premiere “Rock ‘N R’oldies” review (and the most popular vintage rock and roll show in the nation) will help you recapture those wonderful days of vintage oldies! With their musical talent, high energy and contagious sense of humor, Phil Dirt and The Dozers transport you to another time and place… namely, the 50s, 60s, and 70s of Rock and Roll! A Summer Arts Festival tradition - with more appearances in Veterans Park Amphitheater than any other band - Phil Dirt and the Dozers’ Summer Arts Festival performances are almost as nostalgic as the music they lovingly present! Imagine hearing The Four Seasons’ Sherry with the original falsetto vocals intact… or the hauntingly beautiful Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody or You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling …or the beautiful ballads of Roy Orbison including Pretty Woman and In Dreams. And imagine the Platters’ soulstirring Only You performed with all the scratches and skips found on a wellworn 33 1/3 record, the way The Dozers first learned it! Phil Dirt and The Dozers’ nostalgia show encompasses three decades of great music, and is performed absolutely live with a sophisticated yet lighthearted approach that creates an atmosphere you’re certain to enjoy! Jazz Concert at the Snyder Park Bandshell, Summer Arts Festival, 1967

And so it began… During the 1960s, the City of Springfield provided funding to the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for a series of concerts at the band shell in Snyder Park. Jackson Wiley, conductor of the symphony, used that as seed money to start the Summer Arts Festival. In 1967, Wiley gathered representatives from the local arts organizations and non-profits to raise funds for a full month of concerts, plays, and children activities in three park venues: the band shell and the large shelter house across from the lagoon in Snyder Park, and on a portable platform stage against the cliff’s in Cliff Park (now Veteran’s Park.) Incorporated in May of 1967 as the Springfield Arts Festival, Inc., the board of directors changed the name to the Springfield Arts Council in 1971 and installed a permanent stage in Cliff Park, using volunteer labor and donated materials. 29

When the organization hired it’s first executive director in 1974, the office for the organization was located upstairs at the equipment barn across from the lagoon in Snyder Park. Festival programming continued for the next 15 years at all three locations. The City of Springfield withdrew tax dollars to support programming for the festival Chris Moore with during the 1980s, at the same time Esther Manuel they turned off street lights due to lack of funds. During the mid ‘80s, the festival consolidated its month long festival to the stage in Cliff Park. Near the end of the century, a multi-purpose building was constructed to the west of the stage to house dressing rooms, a small shop, and a concession facilities. But eventually, artists and audience needed more to make their experience at the festival more enjoyable.

Festival performance at Snyder Park Shelter House

The renovations in Veteran’s Park, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Pietre Van Dyke, were completed in 3 phases. The first phase included a restroom/concession building on the east side of the amphitheater, completed in 2003. The second, and most Veterans Park, prior to renovations major, was completed in 2005 and included an all new stage with a lighting canopy, a re-graded lawn seating area, lighting in the parking lot, and a technical productions building and deck at the rear of the amphitheater. Phase 3, completed in 2010, included a second restroom/concession facility and terrace to the west of the amphitheater. We look forward to the next 50 years of the Summer Arts Festival! “The Zaniac” - Alex Zerbe with special guest, ventriloquist Lynn Trefzger With the energy of 1,000 suns, Alex Zerbe moves like a rubber band from one end of the stage to the other. Beatboxing, juggling, dancing, singing, music and magic are just a few of the things that led Piers Morgan of America’s Got Talent to call this physical comedian, “The total package.” The “Professional Zaniac,” who’s been cracking jokes onstage for almost 15 years, zigzags between physical stunts and non-stop comedy. During the show vegetables are sliced in half by flying playing cards, flaming torches and bowling balls are juggled with ease and every audience volunteer leaves the stage in triumph. Zerbe is a Hacky Sack World Champion, and has performed everywhere from cruise ships and comedy clubs to prime-time television in three countries, including America’s Got Talent! and Last Comic Standing. Have you ever had a childhood hobby that got out of hand? That explains Lynn Trefzger’s start as a ventriloquist/comedienne. For over 30 years, Lynn has given life to a trunk full of comical characters. Audiences are treated to Lynn’s vocal illusion talents, when they may meet a drunken and lovable camel, a grumpy old man, a feisty little girl, and may even see some audience members who are brought up for the action!

ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation courtesy of The Springfield Foundation

Lynn is a premier entertainer for Disney Cruise Lines, as well as Crystal and Norwegian Cruise Lines, and is also a favorite among many Celebrity Golf Classic Invitationals and the Atlantis Resort and Casino in Nassau, Bahamas. Lynn (and her many voices) has appeared on ABC, TNN, A&E, and Lifetime. She is featured in a comedy/documentary about the art of ventriloquism with Jay Johnson and Jeff Dunham called “I’m No Dummy” by NBC Universal. 35

The Capitol Steps

Just in time for this year’s elections, The Capitol Steps return to the Summer Arts Festival with their new show, “What To Expect When You’re Electing.” The Capitol Steps, a Washington DC-based comedy troupe that began as a group of Senate Staffers, will present a show based on songs from their current album “Mock the Vote.” The Capitol Steps have been a Washington, DC institution for over thirty years, providing a unique blend of musical and political comedy to our Nation’s Capitol and more. Their hilarious show consists of tasteful lampooning guaranteed to leave both sides of the political spectrum laughing. The troupe started in 1981, when John McCain was only 63 years old! Since then, they have appeared on “The Today Show,” “Nightline,” “CBS Evening News” and for many years in specials for National Public Radio. Their show is constantly changing, strenuously bi-partisan, and includes songs about everything in the news, such as “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Crimea,” “Ain’t No Pipeline, Now It’s Gone,” and “The iMpossible iWatch.” If you’ve ever wanted to see Barack Obama sing a show tune, Nancy Pelosi sing a rock song, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie do a classical ballet, this might just be the show for you! Study after study shows that young people and communities are transformed when they have access to quality arts programs, and there is no art form more collaborative and all encompassing than a musical, with its blend of music, dance, language, and visual and technical arts. 46

Urban Jazz Coalition

Urban Jazz Coalition has electrified audiences for years performing their unique and energetic blend of R&B/Jazz/Fusion at a multitude of prominent jazz festivals around the country, including The Capital Jazz Festival, The Seabreeze Jazz Festival, Capital Jazz Fest Supercruise, The Boscov/Berks Jazz Festival, The Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival, Jazz Fest West, The Russian River Jazz Festival, River Raisin Jazz Festival, and many more. JazzTimes Magazine award winning columnist, Brian Soergel, has described Urban Jazz Coalition sound as “flush with rhythmic grooves, funky bass lines, and beautiful melodies”. The band has also made a strong impression at radio with three consecutive releases achieving “Top 30” status on multiple contemporary jazz charts. UJC’s music has been featured on network television programming, international film soundtracks, national advertising campaigns, and as part of an eclectic group of artists on a Gospel/Jazz compilation project released by Capitol/EMI Records. In addition to the notoriety that UJC has earned as a self contained group, they have also become one of the most in-demand backing groups in the smooth jazz genre, having performed as sidemen for a number of top contemporary jazz artists. When asked why this group has generated so much excitement in smooth jazz circles, former Radio & Records chart columnist Carol Archer said, “A lot of artists aspire to sound as tight and as funky as Urban Jazz Coalition, but these gentlemen really do pull it off.”

Moscow Nights and Golden Gates

Moscow Nights is the versatile ensemble of world-recognized, prizewinning musicians from Russia, who have established themselves as one of the fastest rising folk groups in the United States. Led by Vitaliy Bezrodnov on Bayan Accordion, the group was initially formed under his direction in Kaluga, Russia in the late 1980’s where Mr. Bezrodnov attended Kaluga Music Conservatory. After completing his conservatory studies, he successfully reorganized the group in the United States in 1996. Their current program incorporates obscure folk instruments such as percussion “Treshotki” and birch-bark whistles. Thus, Moscow Nights is able to present a unique program of a culture that had almost lost its original identity. The music offer audiences an entertaining glimpse into Old Russia through music, song, and dance, and helps bridge a three-quarter century of isolation between our countries. In 1993, the Golden Gates was created in St. Petersburg, Russia. Drawing upon students from the Author’s Aesthetic Music Secondary School, these children became the first members of the group, and they began performing at various cultural events, folk festivals and concerts throughout Russia and Europe. The group’s name is symbolic. Through the Traditional Russian songs we are open our hearts and souls, knowledge of our source as gold. Since then, Golden Gates has appeared at cultural events, folk festivals and concerts in Russia as well as in Europe and North America, and is recognizes as the one of the most talented, exceptional and traditional ambassadors of the Russian folk culture.

Griffin House

Sip of Summer Wine and Beer Tasting begins at 5:00 PM

The Summer Arts Festival welcomes back hometown favorite Griffin House! Born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, where his father worked in a tire shop and his mother helped place children with foster families, the athletically-gifted House landed a role in a musical in high school and was surprised to learn that he had a natural talent for singing. Recording and performing for over a decade, House has toured with Ron Sexsmith, Patti Scialfa, Josh Ritter, John Mellencamp, Mat Kearney, and The Cranberries. He received early critical acclaim on the CBS Sunday Morning, and his songs have since been featured in countless films and television shows such as One Tree Hill, Army Wives, and Brothers and Sisters. He has also appeared on Late Night with Craig Ferguson. Most recently, CNN Newsroom invited House to perform “Paris Calling, from So On and So Forth, live on the air, and the song has been picked up by radio prior to being serviced. House has released ten albums and continues to headline his own national tours. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife Jane and their two daughters. While Griffin headlines nationally, he remains a Summer Arts Festival favorite!
