The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Arts in the Classroom program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

Since 1975, The Springfield Arts Council’s Arts in the Classroom program has made professional artists and performances available to children in Springfield and Clark County schools. We appreciate your decision to bring the performing arts into your school.

When funding your Arts in the Classroom performance, in addition to your school’s building activity fund, you may wish to contact your PTO, Booster Club, or Corporate Partner to assist. Program fees account for approximately 75% of the actual cost of each program. The remaining 25% of the fee is subsidized by grants and donations to the Springfield Arts Council from individuals, businesses, and foundations.

Your principal’s signature on the Arts in the Classroom Order Form (on page 11 of this booklet) is your school’s financial commitment to the Springfield Arts Council to schedule requested programs.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM What happens in the forest stays in the forest, as fairies play tricks on each other and on humans, complete with wacky Athenians, puppets, and your favorite moments from Shakespeare’s classic tale, including opportunities for students to become part of the action and fun!

Performance Time: Approx. 120 minutes Recommended for grades 4 - 12 (maximum audience of 500) Program Fee: $575

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company ROMEO AND JULIET Star-crossed lovers from feuding families ultimately meet their untimely end in the fast-paced, modern staging that still uses the Bard’s original language. Romeo and Juliet proves its continued relevance in the lives of young and old alike throughout the ages.

Performance Time: Approx. 120 minutes Recommended for grades 6 - 12 (maximum audience of 500) Program Fee: $575

OPPORTUNITIES The Springfield Arts Council’s Arts in the Classroom program is pleased to offer these workshop opportunities for classroom educators in the Springfield/Clark County area.

Workshops may be scheduled for a single session, or for multiple day residencies to enhance the creative experience.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company CREATE YOUR OWN “PUCK” Based on the classic Shakespeare character, students will cycle through stations to create their own Puck, including physicality, voice, and quotes from “Midsummer Night’s Dream” before performing their unique version of Puck for their class.

WorkShop Time: Approx. 60 minutes Recommended for grades K - 12 Program Fee: $275 per session or $750 for five session on the same day

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company ACT THE TEXT Learn the plot to any of Shakespeare’s 38 plays by acting them out as a class. This workshop is ideal as an introduction to any of the Bard’s texts!

MADCAP PUPPETS THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ Adapted by Dylan Shelton Travel down the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy, Toto, and their best friends, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man. Madcap brings this epic adventure to life with breathtaking puppets in this enchanting classic!

Performance Time: Approx. 45-50 minutes Recommended for grades K - 5 Program Fee: $495

MADCAP PUPPETS THE CASE OF THE KIDNAPPED BACKPACK Book, Music and Lyrics by Paul Strickland Cat Lumbo, child crow and amateur sleuth extraordinaire, is on the case! Billy the Raccoon misplaces his backpack… or was it stolen?

Everyone is a suspect in this hilarious musical-puppet-whodunnit!

Performance Time: Approx. 45-50 minutes Recommended for grades K - 5 Program Fee: $495

MADCAP PUPPETS THE GREAT SPACE CAPER Written by Dylan Shelton Famous space explorer, Buzby, crash lands his spaceship on a strange planet and forms an unlikely friendship with a stranded alien named Galax. Together, they uncover the mysteries of our universe as they search for a new planet that the funny little creature can call home.

IMANI GONZALEZ World Cultures

Travel with Imani Gonzalez on a journey to Asia, Africa, South America, and North America. Students will learn and experience each rich culture through authentic traditional songs and stories. They will be engaged through call & response in singing with Imani.

This performance is a tremendous new way to bring young people into the living, breathing vitality of other cultures.

“Imani performed her Global Voices program at both Silver Creek Middle school and Chevy Chase Elementary school this school year. The students absolutely love her. They learned traditional songs and stories from countries around the world. A favorite was ‘Cai Cai Calao’ in Portuguese. Imani engages both the students and teachers through call & response and even invites some of them to dance together with her on stage. This music is infectious, joyous and so rich! Her words of stories and songs truly touched us all. Ms. Imani is a treasure!”

SPECIAL ENGAGEMENT In-school performances available OCTOBER 15-19, 2018

FLY DANCE COMPANY THE HEALTHY HIP-HOP SHOW The talented, comical dancers of FLY invite you to experience the world of Hip Hop in a nonstop, fast-action, fun for all ages show. The allmale group is youthful, masculine, risk-taking, acrobatic, funky, and fun, and they act as well as dance!

Through various skits, the students will be informed on how leading a healthy, active lifestyle will improve everyday activities. Then the fun begins as FLY shares some history of the Hip Hop culture, including its origins and inspirations.

For the FLY DANCE COMPANY dancers, Hip Hop has not only been empowering but life changing as it has encouraged us to be “leaders� and not followers, which is just one of the many positive social messages throughout the performance.

Works of art digitally delivered to your classroom Engage your students through all the arts, including visual art! The Springfield Museum of Art will send you art works from the collection once a month from November to April. The images can be used to engage your students with Visual Thinking Strategies to promote critical thinking, text- to-self and text-to-world connections, and close observing.

The Museum offers an afternoon workshop in Visual Thinking Strategies on November 6, 2018, and educators are welcome to attend free of charge.
