The concept of citizenship has always been strongly linked to the notion of rights, especially political rights, which allow an individual to act in the direction of public affairs of the state, participating directly or indirectly in the formation of the government, to vote, etc. However, in a democracy, the definition of right, presupposes the counterpart of duties which is being used excessively.

In my opinion, at this moment in Portugal, the government is putting back a lot of pressure in the citizens and nd we will not allow this during a lot more time because there are families with nothing to eat, there are people whose livess are in a really deep hole, there are robberies happening, all these due to a guy that spent lots and lots of money building things that were not necessary at the time and now we are paying that.

Basically our citizenship is constantly being put in risk, we need a bonded society not a society of protestants, so today let’s make our World a better one."

CITIZENSHIP What’s citizenship?

It is hard to define citizenship, since it does not have a static definition, quite the opposite, it develops over time.

Citizenship is a link of rights and obligations between individuals and the State. It also means the respect among us and our fellows.

Citizenship refers to everything humanity achieved throughout the centuries. We can describe it as being the highest expression of everything that considers our rights: right to life, right to freedom, right to equality, among many others.

Since their youth, people must be prepared to live in harmony with each other. They must make themselves respected without with forgetting their responsibilities. Citizens should contribute to keep life in society peaceful and undisturbed since citizenship is supposed sup to bring them together.

With that being said, it is important to point out that these rights are not exclusive xclusive of a certain group of people. As Susan B. Anthony said: “It is we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people: men, their rights and nothing more; women, their rights and nothing less”.

They also must be taught to preserve Nature and keep the environment clean. Recycling, not throwing litter into the floor, not ruining monuments, not wasting water, preserving habitats to protect species at risk of extinction are very important actions that help protecting the environment. After all, it’s our duty to take care of Nature.

Granting nting citizenship isn’t just about the rights, but the duties as well. As a citizen, you must be aware that there are a series of responsibilities you must fulfill when integrated in something as complex as a community. Therefore, for a person to enjoy their ir rights, they must abide by the law; respect other people’s rights, satisfy their state’s obligations and protect the environment, assuring the well-being being of the community and the world.

Helping lping others makes us feel good about ourselves and it makes needy people live a happier, healthier, longer life. That's why it is an important part of living in a powerful community.

It's from our responsibility to volunteer in order to help kids, sick and d old people. Volunteering is beneficial for our and others´ sake. Having compassion for others shows that people worry about life in a society.

For me, citizenship means rights. s. But our world is unfair because the equality of rights rig is just an illusion. In nature, the dominating species are always privileged. The same happens with the human breed. Since the historic discoveries in early centuries, the Arian race was seen as the dominating race because the countries they came from were the most developed countries. They had a more advanced culture than the black or the Asian cultures for example.

Education is very important to guide young people to act according to these rules of citizenship. At school we not only learn the subjects, but we also learn how to behave towards society.

Everyone should participate in the citizenship in an active way. Therefore, adult citizens should vote wisely for the leaders who will be in government. People should vote according accor to their conscience contributing to a better future with more freedom.

The concept of citizenship is a set of rights and duties to which an individual is subject in relation to the society in which he lives.

The importance of Nature The more technological our society becomes and as our cities become larger and more urbanized our connection with nature gets weaker and weaker. It is difficult to remember the natural beauty of a 100 year old tree when you are living in a city where you are lucky to see a tree every three blocks.

But do we have all the same rights?

Not that people should make an effort so that de following generations will have a better future?

Well, today in actual society, there are still many places where discrimination and racism are also prevalent. For this, there are a set of rules, norms, values and principles that we must follow, because they regulate functioning of society in order to end this differentiation. We are equal, because we have the same rights and duties, and we are all different in appearance.

Nature gives us, for free, the most important things and we continue to ignore I am not saying that our technological advances are a bad thing, but we must remember the importance of nature. People need to experience nature.

One reason is that the beauty of nature excites our senses, but it also is a perfect place to experience personal growing and meditation.

This is a big problem but there is another that we think young people should always be our future. Is it fair that some people make decisions that constrain our future? We all want to have a job, a salary and live in a better world so we must all work as a whole. In this case, citizenship civilized and able to provide always best conditions of life.

Learning more about nature can lead to the growing of a society. As humans, we are constantly looking to be surprised.

Nature offers the most pure form of beauty. Nature is stunning, yet not distracting. Our senses are cultivated by the magnificence of it, yet we are not so distracted that we cannot think of anything else. This kind of beauty demands your attention while the beauty of nature is humbly offered. A baby is a great example of our attraction to nature or just natural things in general. When there is a baby in a room full of people, people cannot see nor do anything else. We are attracted to them. I think a big reason for this is because they act so natural. They are not analyzing their actions, they are completely uninhibited. Society has not shaped them and told them what is right and wrong and how they should act.

This is what we all want, this is what we all live in and this is one of the goals in European year of citizenship.

There is no success or happiness without the exercise of citizenship and global ethics.

This is concerning and has spread all over the world like a virus. It is definitely not helping the most developed countries and is also contributing for the others to sink even lower.

Their access to education, health care and even sanitized water is becoming more and more difficult.

We all know what is happening all over the world, especially in our own country. We are involved in a major economic world crisis.

The question I would like to lift today is: Does consumerism have anything to do with it?

Consumerism has for many years been treated like a casual thing, as if it were normal for people all over the world to spend an enormous amount of money on things that they perhaps don’t even need. So, because everyone thought it was okay, we didn’t pay any attention to it. But the truth is consumerism has reached a new level. It is no longer a casualty it is a major problem of our society.

Politicians all over the world are trying to find a solution to put a stop to this crisis. In my opinion the solution lays with the problems. It is necessary to fix what is broken, solve what is wrong. Only then can we rise from the aches and start climbing our way back to greatness.

One of the things that needed to be sorted out is the consumerism economy. It is time to finally put a stop into this kind of manipulation and to slow it down. We can fix this and move on. Until then, we will always be stuck into the Static Age.

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t think consumerism is one of the factors to blame for our current situation, but the thing is, it didn’t get where it is now without any help and the worst thing is that we were the ones who helped it out.

Consumerism has swept into our lives slowly but consistently. It made itself look presentable and like a nice thing, when in reality it was an addiction. This is not only affecting the most developed countries that face now the consequences of their acts, it is also ruining the poor in developing countries.

The consumer society is controlled mainly by market companies. They merchandise brand and designer products, in order to manipulate the consumer’s mind. Well, let me tell you something, it worked.

This apparently normal thing has created not only new diseases but also new economic status. We have now people addicted to shopping, the shopaholics, and people who owe to the banks more money than they could ever make out of a life full of work.

The China Price This statement is according to the reality, because having money and valuables aren´t important in our life. What is more important is being happy and doing good things.

The price of products from China has always been extremely low due to cheap labor work.

But when it started and how cheap is it?

To understand why the labor-Chinese work is extremely profitable in comparison to other countries, just keep in mind that China is the most populous country on the planet. This, attached to other, causes a high demand for employment and consequently lower wages.

Sometimes man is very ambitious, because the more he has, the more he wants. With money, people can have a good car and a good house, but this willingly or not, is only to impress the others and to be seen as the best by the society.

That’s why I think that some of the rich people aren’t happy, because they are very materialists, giving more importance to their welfare. On the other hand, as the poor people don’t arouse any kind of interest, because they don’t have possibilities, they have true friendships and they give more importance to the things related to the emotional side. So what makes us happy is having the love of our family, giving and receiving love and caresses, being good people and doing good things, for example, help someone who needs our aid.

When did Chinese capitalism begin?

China, which sees itself as a communist country, took in the late '50s a major step towards the Western Capitalism. With the breakthrough of Russian and Chinese communism, it led to the opening of its market to the rest of the world 10 years later.

This market opening led the developed countries to explore the country in the most profitable way, which today is reflected in phenomena such as child exploitation and cheap labor-work.

Concluding, man has to give more importance to little things that mean a lot. So that’s why that “being” and “doing” are much more important than “having”.

How cheap is this labor?

Although it has adopted laws to counter it, China continues to be one of the countries with the lowest production cost in the world.

Consumerism in the modern world

According to the United States Department of Labor (USDL) the average hourly cost of production in China is $2, which is 16 times cheaper compared with Central Europe and almost 50 times compared with Nordic countries.

There are two worlds in this world: the developed world and the developing world.

In the developed world people buy everything which is and isn’t necessary – superfluous things.

They watch advertising on TV and they buy things because it’s fashion or because it’s a trendy brand, even if it is very expensive. This is the picture of the industrialized world, where persons compete with each other to see who spends more in futile things.

Data like these, as well as tax level perks that make China an ideal country for large companies built their infrastructure, and also turned China to a highly industrialized country, though a developing country.

The people who live in these countries have a very high standard of living, but the cost of life is very high, too, compared with the developing countries. People here have access to basic needs, such as healthcare, education, nutrition, drinking water and housing. Besides, the majority

has beautiful and expensive homes, phones, computers, television sets and many other electrical appliances, toys for children, a lot of clothes, shoes and accessories, and, of course, cars. Because of this, overconsumption exists.

The notable global prosperity of these countries causes more and better job opportunities.

Advertising can be useful, because it can give us the information about the product that we are looking for and it also increases the competition between companies and their brands.

On the other hand, advertising can be dangerous, because it manipulates people and convinces them to buy things that sometimes they don’t really need or use.

On the other hand, in the developing world, the majority of the people die owing to inexistent access to healthcare, nutrition and drinking water. They haven’t got a job, and those that have it work in miserable conditions. They suffer from exploitation of big multinational corporations who seek the weakest labour, for the lowest price. These corporations know that these workers don’t have their rights guaranteed.

People that live in the poorest countries have the lowest standard of living.

In my point of view, the advertising is very important, but it mustn’t interfere in our ability to decide or choose.

This world where we live is one where some have all and others have nothing!

Advertising is something which is used to persuade people to buy items that we might need or want. Advertisers know how to make campaigns to target a specific sect: children, teens, the old, among others. They use a lot of techniques to persuade people, for example: they usually use celebrities of the world fashion, but also to sell brands because if celebrities use that product all the people will want to use it, too.

Advertising has its good side; however, it also has bad aspects, for example, advertising gives us information about useful goods or services and that is very important because with that information we get informed about what we need to buy at a precise moment. Because of this, I think that advertising shouldn’t be banned, but we always need to be careful with it.

The companies try to sell their brands and in order to do that they need to advertise their products.

Advertising consists of promoting something and trying to persuade users to buy it.

Brands try to establish an emotional connection with the clients and try to convince them that they can’t live without their products.

Advertising has a huge influence in our lives and there are a lot of problems related with health such as Anorexia, Plastic Surgery and tan addiction.

There are several techniques that brands use to get the client’s loyalty. The most known consist of using idols on their advertising, easy to memorize slogans or associate their products to images: health, beauty, perfection or power.

Since our very childhood, society tells us who we should be, what we should look like, what we 6

should wear, how to act or behave and you continue inue being remembered again and again. So what does this constant bombardment by the media do to us?

To start with, parents of young children have an important role to play in protecting their kids from invasive marketing, and in educating them about advertising tising from an early age.

When it comes to teenagers, the problem is even bigger, especially for girls. More or less 8 million Americans suffer from eating disorders. But that’s not all, Americans spend over 10 billion dollars a year in plastic surgery and d in the past 10 years, there has been a 444% increase in amount of people who choose to undergo cosmetic procedures.

Humankind versus Technology We may see technology as a big advantage to the world society. But, it may not be as harmless as you believe, let’s think together. Although technology has helped the development of the world, it has also created conspiracies and even wars. known Sweden scientist scient named Nobel A well-known invented dynamite. A lot of constructions can now be accomplished, such as tunnels, railroad systems in all continents - a great example of the use of that invention was Panama Canal and Suez Canal among others - have been constructed on time, ti only because it was possible to use dynamite.

So if the corporate advertisers knew what they are doing to us wouldn’t they stop?

Unfortunately, this is exactly what they want. wa Think about the cash they rake in each year by telling us we need to buy things in order to be beautiful, to be accepted, to be loved.

But this discover was not only used for what it was created, it was also applied to war. This bad management of the dynamite made Nobel, who was feeling guilty for such destruction, to offer all his wealth to a foundation. Nowadays this foundation has the objective of rewarding the best investigators of the world, who have contributed for human kind development.

Girls are more affected by advertising but why are they the target? First of all, they don’t have a great track record d when it comes to standing our ground in the face of societal pressures. Some examples include: Neck rings in Thailand, foot binding in China, lip stretching in Ethiopia, but most of all weight loss all over the world.

So, my point of view about technology is that it’s important to be a good person to become a good goo scientist since technology without goodwill can be more destructive than contributive to the development of the world.

So, no matter what the standard of beauty b is, corporations know we will hop right on board. In fact, we have done it before and we are still doing it and that means a lot of money in the corporate advertisers’ pockets!

Creativity:

from any other. However, note that the larger the world is the harder it is to keep a consistent story and that’s why most of the time writers opt by smaller worlds than our own to keep this from f happening.

Finally fill it with the imagination you have, the dreams, the things you wish you could have in this “boring” world we live in. When one creates a world one isn’t bound by physical laws or principles, they are ours to bend; we can even say that we are the gods of those worlds.

Creativity can be commonly described as the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations; originality, progressiveness, or imagination: the need for creativity in modern industry; creativity in the performing arts.

Most of us choose to travel briefly through some fantastic ones that have been created for us already, but take a moment and imagine what would be your world. Doesn’t it sound exciting?

As such we value those who ho have this skill and create new technology or even create a new world in literature or cinematography for us to dwell in. Most of these creations come from complex and intricate ideas that usually have humble beginnings.

Today I am here to talk about “worldbuilding” “wo which is the process of creating a world by a writer or a designer, a universe for the audience to immerse itself in.

The light at the end of the tunnel (but we must turn on the light)

Most of us consider our life dull, and would wish to live somewhere else where things would be more exciting, where for instance nce one could wield magical powers, where one could fly or even travel through time. Thankfully we have creativity and imagination and so, despite the fact that in reality we can’t have those things, we certainly have the means to create a world in which they exist.

Once I started caring about my future, I started realising that life isn’t as easy as I thought. Having a desired job, a stable economic life and a successful career requires hard work, will and a little bit of luck too.

When I sit on the couch watching the news I only see bad news. I must be pretty unlucky, since I can’t find any good news. Day after day, I hear the same line “Unemployment rate is growing and if you are young, just run, to another planet.”(They really say this!)

Most of us have read or at least watched a Harry Potter title and at some point we realized we would love to be able to live in such a world. But the question I asked myself was: “How do you create such a wonderful universe? “

When this happens, I immediately get up from the couch and go do…nothing, I do nothing ‘cause that’s what young people are good at, doing nothing. And that’s what must be changed in our mentality. We must do something; somet we must invest in our future.

First, one must come me up with a general idea to the story that will fit in this universe and what will distinguish from our reality, what will make it special.

There’s a beautiful word we were taught in English classes which is “entrepreneur”.

However, pronouncing this word is hard as hell, and there’s a reason why saying the word is hard, because being an entrepreneur is hard. hard Creating a business is hard, working as a teen is hard, even thinking is hard. The point is, unless you are the son of an Arab millionaire your life is going to be hard.

After you come up with the first few concepts you then go on and fill that universe with more details. What kind off specimens inhabits inhabit that universe? Humans? Or something else? What kind of technology do they have? Remember the more detailed and more fascinating the world is the more interesting it will be for the reader or viewer.

Next will be geography, the places that t will make that World so special and unique, distinguishable 8

actually forms opinions about things; and he now cares about school – he actually studies!

I like to quote titles of songs to make my texts more credible, and there’s a song that really applies to young people who want to have a successful career. When you watch those bad news about unemployment, when you see the world wide crisis and you think you’re just going to be part of it, or when you go to a job interview, and you hear a big NO, the answer, my friend, is “Blowing in the wind”.

He also never cared about or listened to music. Now, he listens to music, which makes him happier.

Also, his sense of humor is now much more sophisticated.

She has fears, like everyone else, and her brain is in a total mess. To conclude, this girl is confused because, probably, she doesn't know anything about what career TO follow in the future but she still hasn’t lost hope, she still believes!

Cláudia, a girl who feels confused, scared, under pressure... desperate to pick tomorrow!

She, simply, finds herself in a mix of emotions, sometimes lost among dozens; hundreds of ways, without knowing what follow. For her, the yesterday used to be so easy, though it doesn't seem like it... However, she knows that this is just a hard phase of life and when it passes, tomorrow will be better!

Young people’s illusions From the moment a child goes to school, he or she is taught to chase and fight for her or his goals, to aim high, because when dreams are big, the fight is even bigger, and makes us work harder to get what we want. When someone grows, that someone grows with goals, desires, ambitions, always wanting more and more, because she or he is never satisfied with that little she or he can achieve, because resting and losing one´s place in society is not an option. One studies until one´s eyes cry of exhaustion and until one´s fingers get calluses, but never gives up. As a person grows, however, she realizes that not everything is going to be easy along the way.

Young people grow up studying and acquiring knowledge, believing they can change the world and they do what needs to be done, and are then faced with a society that makes their life harder and harder, as if it was on purpose.

Faced with this, how is anyone supposed to react when he or she’s made everything to get a steady job with an acceptable paycheck? When he or she’s never let her arms down? When he or she’s never rested on his or her laurels? When she or he chooses not to go out with her or his friends because she or he has a job to go to?

It’s really frustrating to know you’ve worked to have what you wanted and you ended up unemployed because the politicians didn’t make the right choices in the past. It’s agonizing because they know it’s not their fault, and even though, there’s nothing they can do.

Nowadays it’s even harder to get a job. The youth of the 21st century who has always committed themselves and sacrificed aspects of their lives, will be the ones harmed, and it’s definitely not their fault.

And if some of those will ever reach the clouds, that won´t be enough, because there´ll be always the excuse: the main aim was the moon and not the clouds!

Since the Second World War the world of work has changed a lot. People worked so far from home, they worked many hours a day without getting a good salary. The workplace technology was almost inexistent and the only options to communicate were band line phones or snail mail.

Longer education, shorter working hours, more generous holiday entitlements, earlier retirement - all these accompanied the economic miracle of the 50’s and 60’s.

Today, the idea of a “job for life” doesn’t exist anymore. People don’t dream anymore with a career for life, they just want to get some money to survive.

Nowadays, workplace technology is imperative for any business. Businesses today need more technology than ever before to participate in the competitive business world. Workplace technology makes people’s work easier, efficient and more productive. Many small and large businesses have multi-line phone systems, wireless phone service, copy machines and computers. Email is now the preferred form of communication over standard mail and phone conversations, saving businesses thousands of dollars in postage and phone charges.

The introduction of information technology has caused some unemployment, for example: factories need fewer employees to operate them; robots are now common on production lines, replacing human workers and some jobs have disappeared as they can now be done automatically. However, the development of information technology has created many new jobs in the IT industry (Information Technology industry).

With all this technology development, informal education is more accessible than ever. So people prefer to work at home or being selfemployed.

In the future of work employees will adapt by developing the skills of their workforce. The result will be a competitive labor market in which the rewards go to those who are the most employable. The dangers will be those faced by any self-employed. It’s all too easy to become the victim of one’s own success, working too hard for too long.

Roundheads and Cavaliers On April 22, the Avalon Theatre Company performed at Teatro Cinema de Fafe, to an audience of one hundred and twenty-two students coming from E. B. 2,3 de Arões and ESFafe.

The play is … let’s say… funtastic!

Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland, has everything he ever wanted. The war is won, the Roundheads are in charge, and the Cavaliers are nowhere to be seen. Until, that is, his old enemy Captain Vane and his trusty sidekick Corporal Kewty, return and steal the magical Hairpiece of Power! England’s fate hangs in the balance as Cromwell and his lazy cousin Petunia Prettynose, pursue Vane and Kewty into the tunnels beneath the Tower of London. It’s Roundheads versus Cavaliers as our heroes battle Dwarves, Trolls...and each other!

Students could join the on-stage fun as they chose sides and became real ROUNDHEADS AND CAVALIERS. For those who have been in touch with the cast, it has surely been an experience to keep in the trunk of positive memories! Without any doubt!

An Italian man emigrates to the U.S. and moves in with some distant relatives in Altoona. They tell him he should apply for citizenship and they will help him study for the test. They go over all the U.S. history from the Revolutionary war to present day. Finally, he feels he has enough knowledge to pass the test so he sets an appointment. He walks into the testing room and the agent giving the test thought he would have a bit of fun, so he said to the man "We have a very simple test for you today. If you can use three English words in one sentence, you will be granted citizenship! The words are green, pink and yellow. The Italian man thought for several minutes and finally said "O.K., I think I can do that" Then he said "I heard a the telephone go green, green, green, so I pink it up and I say yellow - who is this."
