A big, bright Saturday night to benefit financial assistance at Saint Peter’s Prep

Office of the President

April 20, 2013 Dear Friends, Welcome to our sixth annual 144 Grand Gala, in support of the Saint Peter’s Prep Financial Assistance Program. As I recognize my final year as president, I find myself filled with tremendous memories of the past seven years, of which memories of you and the Gala are paramount. I remember with great affection our first Gala in 2008. I think we were all both nervous and excited about that first effort, but on a great night when it all seemed to come together so nicely, I sincerely believe that a course was charted – a course for success – for the years that were and are to come. What happened that night? For me, the image of our first chairs – Bill and Seton Ahearn – answers that question well. Over the years, the Gala has had two fundamental goals: to support our students of financial need and, simply put, to have fun. Bill and Seton exemplified both of those goals for me. True to the only “rule” he had set for that first evening, Bill’s speech that night was a brief one. He began the evening by recalling the scholarship he received in 1971, and how without it, he could never have attended Prep. Without it, he said, he never would have become the person he was that day. The room was enthralled. I think it is fair to say that like his speech that evening, Bill’s life, although brief, was certainly memorable! Along with my memories of Bill, I also have wonderful memories of his wife, Seton. As the evening began six years ago, I wondered and worried if people would enjoy themselves. After barely nibbling on my appetizer, I thought what the heck, let’s have a good time. And so, I asked Seton for a dance. As we were “cutting the rug,” I remember others – dozens – began joining us on the dance floor, and the party began. And to tell you the truth, the party has not stopped since! As I think about our evening tonight, I am filled not only with memories of the past, but also with great expectation for the future. Just as the past has been filled with wonderful people, so too our present day. I am so grateful for the dedication of our current chairs, Jane and Jim Donofrio, ’81, P’11,’14; Patty and Joe Nicoletti, ’83, P’13; and Lisa and Matt Siracuse, P’13,’16,’17. It has been a pleasure working and playing with these three great couples. I am also grateful to those who hosted gift-gathering parties, those who donated gifts to our auctions and ad journal, and those who sponsored us this evening, especially Bank of America for their ongoing, generous support. Ultimately, I am grateful to all of you for being here tonight. May great memories be forged this evening. May this night once again support our young men of need who are trying to do great things. And may this night also bring friends and families together as a community in the sort of fun and friendship that have been the hallmark of Prep life since since 1872. Sincerely yours,

Robert E. Reiser, S.J. President 144 Grand Street | Jersey City, NJ 07302 | www.spprep.org | T: 201-547-6410 201-547-2308 | F: 201-547-6421 | E: president@spprep.org communications@spprep.org

Always in our hearts.

April 20, 2013 Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 6th annual 144 Grand Gala! It has been amazing to witness the generosity and commitment of so many members of the Prep community, and it has been our pleasure to serve as co-chairs in making this event come to life. We thank Frances Salvo and the members of Prep’s advancement staff for their hard work and their commitment to the success of the Gala. And we offer a special thanks to Fr. Bob Reiser, S.J who helped us navigate uncharted waters 6 years ago and continues to guide us here tonight. As you know, the Gala is not just a great party; it is also a chance for all of us to assist in giving deserving young men the opportunity to attend Prep. Your support makes this all possible. If you’ve helped stuff envelopes, made a donation to the auction, opened your home to a gift-gathering party or made a reservation to attend, you know, value and understand the mission of Saint Peter’s Prep and we offer our thanks. We are grateful to our corporate and individual sponsors and advertisers whose donations helped to fund tonight’s event and our students’ educations. As you make your way through this program, you will see the names of alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff and businesses who have been so generous with their time, talent and treasures. You know what a special place Prep is, you know the value of a Jesuit education; you’ve either experienced it yourself as a student or as a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, sister or friend of a current student. No matter your affiliation, your support will be felt for years to come as the young men who benefit from it become Men for Others. Tonight is the biggest and brightest night in Jersey City, and we are so glad that you are here to share it. We hope you enjoy every moment of it! Sincerely,

Jane and Jim Donofrio, ’81, P’11, ’14

Patty and Joe Nicoletti, ’83, P’13 Lisa and Matt Siracuse, P’13, ’16, ’17

Le Moyne College is proud to support its spiritual partner, St. Peter’s Prep, in its mission to prepare young men for lives of leadership and service. Since its founding in 1872, St. Peter’s has grown and thrived, adapting to meet the challenges of changing times. What has remained constant, though, is the Jesuit belief that all people, especially the young, possess an inherent dignity that stems from their creation in the image of God.

The academic, athletic, co-curricular, spiritual and service programs aim to foster in students an understanding of the world and the courage to advance the common good.” Saint Peter’s Prep is committed to ensuring that those who are academically capable of attending the school will not be prevented from doing so because of their families’ financial situation. Thanks to the leadership of Bob Reiser, S.J., Saint Peter’s Prep has repeatedly set new standards for success and fulfilled its ideal of educating the whole student. Congratulations Fr. Reiser on the profound impact you have had on the lives of those at Saint Peter’s Prep.

Best wishes for a Grand Gala!

To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of oneself; to leave the world a little better, whether by a child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded. Ralph Waldo Emerson

In memory of Bill Ahearn, ’75, P’01 and in deepest gratitude to Bob Reiser, S.J. for the creation and enduring support of the 144 Grand Gala The Ahearn, Caulfield and Doolan Families

“Lord, teach me to be generous; Teach me to serve you as you deserve; To give and not to count the cost; To toil, and not to seek for rest; To labor, and not to ask for reward except to know that I am doing your will.”

― St. Ignatius of Loyola

It’s Marquette. Here, you can jump straight into your major from Day 1 — and get to the future you’ve already mapped out that much faster. Of course, you’ll also be exposed to a wide range of academic disciplines, service opportunities and transformative experiences. So if the future includes a change of plans, you’ll be ready for that, too. marquette.edu/explore
