Ij the wond worfd'-o^the yoking seems to be a world of Marchers, more tha'h it/ever was before, lay mean that som ethinWnas been lost from a world of long ago. ’62 grad knows a world of progress and plenty — but he wanders where it came from and what vt’s moving toward. The world west of the wall Jfowsj^fast, and even the young searchers are swept alo n g ./few tfoink to search back for a source — andf^he finding is difficult. M aybe the thinking youn man of 1962 should search in a more negative way, for w ithin the last y a wall lhas been built against him, —a there is/nothing positive about a wall, It rrier rhat says “ keep out” or “k A not/ freedom A unity A' spirit or love or trust or progress, oes not laugh. H only an obstacle, ission of defeat, There never has been a more defi of opposition, It demands a continued search, and a fFhBLsayingN^f yes to what one finds -to one of two totally opposed w ay^ One builds w alls; the other flows in a Stream that is rich, if one knows its source and direction.

After seventeen years Prep said good-bye to Joe Zucconi, one of its best loved teachers and finest men. Some teachers exert an influence that cannot be measured or described, just by being themselves. Joe Zucconi is such a man.

At Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston last June 8th, Mr. William Hanlon underwent a twelvehour operation for the correction of a defective valve in his heart. When Mr. Hanlon left Prep in the first week of June, he and his students and fellow teachers knew that the chances of his returning in September were only fifty-fifty. Mr. Hanlon almost did not return. But after those few anxious days Mr. Hanlon said to his parents, “ Tell them at Grand Street I’m coming back.” On Schola Brevis Day Mr. Hanlon was back, full smile, full schedule.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for all those who so kindly donated their blood for m y open heart operation and also all those who had Masses and prayers said for my recovery. A portion of the Communion prayers of the Mass come to mind as appropriately expressing m y wish for you. “May the Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ preserve thy soul to life everlasting.” I shall be forever indebted to you for your kindness. Sincerely,

THE OFFENSIVE ELEVEN Quarterback: Jack O’ Dea; Backs: Tony Mendolla, John Crowe, Jack Kutney; Line: Gene Torpey, Mike Agresta, Bob Zakhar, Jim Stokes, Tony Genovese, Marty Clancy, Bill O’Day.

As the 1961 season opened, Bill Cochrane seemed faced with a rebuilding year. He had three-fourths of his backfield returning, but the offensive line and the defensive team were green and inexperienced. But once more Prep proved the experts wrong. They bowled over Bayonne in the opening game, and after a loss to powerhouse St. Joseph’s of Philadel phia, they added four straight wins. Both the offensive ana defensive lines showed surprising strength. The defense looked especially strong in shutting out Demarest and stopping the ground games of St. Benedict’s, Snyder and Lincoln. Reaching out for the County Championship, a determined Prep team met an equally determined Memorial team. With its first chance to defeat Memorial in three years, Prep saw its hopes crumble as the fabled Memorial luck snatched up a fumble and ran 85 yards for a 7-6 victory. The next week Prep once more outplayed its opponent only to lose by a point. The Irish from St. Michael’s were beaten in every department but managed to cash in on their few scoring opportunities and put down the Prep 14-13. Looking at the record of past Prep teams, this was a poor season, but Prep was outplayed in only one game, and with a break or two this team might have gone down as one of the greatest.

Mr. Bob Kelly and Mr. Tom Rogers Freshman-team Coaches

Student organizations and departments of instruction sponsor frequent lectures and symposia in areas which are closely related to the academic sphere of student life. These programs encourage a participation by faculty and student personnel from other colleges.

The Special Programs Committee of SAINT PETER’S COLLEGE conducts a series of formal lectures to which students, faculty, and on special occasions the community at large are invited. Distinguished speak ers provide active stimulation to the intellectual life of the college.

ISO NT H EM O V E The city is rebuilding on every front—attracting new in d u stryerecting new homes—providing efficient, streamlined municipal gov ernm ent-offering more opportunity than ever before to the young college graduate. Jersey C ity differs from m any American cities. It is geographically located on the west shore of the Hudson River where major national railroads terminate; it has deep water harbor facilities; it is served by expressways which are and w ill continue to be part of our national highw ay system; it has economic advantages offered few other cities in the nation. These geographic and physical assets truly make Jersey City, the

American City of Opportunity.
