Living With Parkinson’s Disease At Oakey Assisted Living Community, we care about the needs of your loved ones. We are focused on providing Senior Living at Ease.

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive and chronic disease that affects the body’s movement causing tremors, slow movement, balance difficulties and rigid muscles. It is estimated that seven to ten million people around the world live with Parkinson’s disease, which disrupts the production of dopamine by the brain. The neurons are firing without normal control due to this loss, and when the dopamine levels get too low, it is difficult for them to accomplish goals and control their movements.

There Are Five Stages of Parkinson’s: 1. Mild symptoms that only affect one side of the body.

2. Symptoms that affect both sides changing the gait and posture.

3. Slow movements along with impairment to balance, however functioning independently is still possible.

4. Severe and debilitating to the extent that the person can’t live on their own. They experience muscles that are rigid and walking is very limited.

5. Wheelchair bound or bedridden and needs constant care as they can not move without assistance.

The staff helps our residents with Parkinson’s choose food that will not interfere with their medications. We offer twice daily exercise classes that help delay or work through the common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as tremors, shuffling of the feet and freezing. We also help them to better project their voices so they can be understood. In addition, Oakey Assisted Living also offers monthly educational meetings and a monthly support group.

Can Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment help with pain management?

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, or DOs, are trained to use their hands to diagnose illness and injury and correct any issues in your joints, fascia, nerves, muscles and bones. This is known as Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT).

As part of their education, DOs receive special training in the musculoskeletal system, your body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones.

DOs often use OMT to relieve pain. Research shows that people with low back pain or migraines who receive OMT needed less medicine, had fewer migraine days, and felt less pain than those who took medication but didn’t receive OMT. LIVING WILL LOCKBOX: Secretary of State Underscores Value of Securing Important Healthcare Wishes Now Secretary of State Ross Miller encourages Nevadans to take steps now to secure their healthcare wishes rather than leaving such personal decisions up to others in a time of crisis.

Individuals can take a few easy steps now to determine their advance health care directives such as living wills, and file those documents with Nevada’s no-cost Living Will Lockbox.

The Living Will Lockbox is the best way to securely store advance health care directives while still having those important documents readily available to family members and health care providers at times of crisis. Since its launch more than five years ago, the program has proven to be sustainable, secure and easy to use.

“We all deserve to have our end-of-life wishes respected,” said Secretary Miller. “With advanced care planning like living wills, health care providers can focus on a level of care based on the patient’s expressed wishes.”

Many healthcare and legal professionals understand and appreciate the value of the Living Will Lockbox and can help answer questions about the program. The Secretary of State’s office works closely with elder law attorneys, estate planners, Nevada AARP, the Washoe County Senior Citizen Law Project, and the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program to ensure the general public can access information about the value of the service.

Use of the Living Will Lockbox is free to all Nevadans, and registering, either as an individual or as an authorized healthcare provider, is very simple. Individuals can download the registration forms at www.livingwilllockbox.com, then send the completed forms and documents by mail or fax to the Nevada Secretary of State’s office. The entrance to the walkway leading to the plaza, will be flanked by two fu dogs. The walkway lined with soldier palms, will lead to the Garden of Eternity Plaza. This feature will offer a place for ceremonies and will have ceremonial features added to enhance its use.

Memorials in the garden will consist of both upright and flat memorial options. Private and semi-private interment options are also available.

Garden of Eternity has been surveyed by local Feng Shui Master Lin Huang, trained at the Taoist Temple in Taiwan, so that it meets the laws of Feng Shui.

— Annual Events — In celebration of traditional Asian customs, the Chinese New Year and Ching Ming, and other special days of observance will be held at the Garden of Eternity.

Fu dogs known for offering a symbolic protection to a property, will be placed at the leading walkway of the Garden.

The garden is positioned in the South Eastern area of the cemetery and will overlook Legacy Lake and have a clear view of the Las Vegas mountain range to the Northwest.

This arrangement will best benefit from the Yin manifestations of quiet, darkness, moonlight, and stillness—resulting in a positive response from visiting friends and loved ones, who experience the compatible aura.
