Located in the Arbor Hill neighborhood in Albany, The Barn consists of 22 subsidized apartments for artists to live and work in. The building, which was once St. Joseph’s Academy, now holds more than 13,000 square feet of low-cost work and rehearsal suites, a recording studio, an exhibition hall and performance space.

St. Joseph’s Academy had long been a symbol of the state of the surrounding neighborhood since it was built in 1906. Initially founded as a school for young woman, it cultivated children’s potential. Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Kennedy had lived his early years just blocks away. His parents both attended the school, which served both boys and girls after the Boy’s Academy succumbed to fire.

But, decades later, as the community declined, so too did the academy. Ultimately, it was abandoned and left to decay.

Holler’s vision for the Albany Barn has much to with the revitalization of the surrounding community since it brings promising creative talent to the area.

— Kristen Holler, executive director of the Albany Barn The Albany Barn, Inc. is a non-for-profit organization established nearly eight years ago with the mission to provide low-income housing for struggling artists while also seeking to revitalize the urban community.

With the collaborative effort with Albany’s Housing Authority, the old school was obtained and construction started in February 2012. Doors opened to tenants in April of this year.

Since opening its doors in April, Holler said the local community has been welcoming.

“We do not have any illusions of being a panacea for the challenges of Arbor Hill, downtown Albany, or the state of Upstate’s creative arts market,” she said. “But, we do hope to shed light on the tremendous talent in our region, its cultural and historical strengths, and the abundant opportunities for a brighter future. “ She said the inclusive nature of the venue keeps it from becoming too selfimportant.

“The Barn and Stage 1 are for everyone. This is not some elitist camp for artists,” she said. “This

is a community space where people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels can meet to create, collaborate and participate in something different.”

The upcoming Fusion “anti-gala” promises the best in arts, foods and fashion from home-grown talent.

Fusion will feature custom fashion designs, performances and art installations by regional artists inspired by Arbor Hill’s past, present and future.

Chef Ric Orlando, a “Chopped” champion from the hit Food Network television show, will be preparing dishes featuring fresh, local ingredients.

Orlando is executive chef at New World Bistro in Albany. His cuisine will be accompanied by desserts from The Cookie Factory in Troy and Stacks Espresso Bar in Albany.

Craft beer will be provided by Druthers Brewing Company, and signature event cocktails will be served by the Albany Distilling Company.

“We tried to develop good partnerships over the year,” said Holler, “not just with larger corporations but with small business owners and entrepreneurs. I’m a foodie, so that’s what I get excited about.”

Fusion will begin with a jazz reception from 6-8 p.m. followed by deejay duo, Space, Time, & Spacetime with displays by lighting artist Nicky Lightz.

By MICHAEL HALLISEY halliseym@spotlightnews.com CAPITAL DISTRICT — Just shy of 40 years old, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” still makes for a popular event each and every Halloween.

The Palace Theatre plays host to the cult classic film Monday, Oct. 20, as part of its annual Rocky Horror Bash.

“This is our fifth year hosting Rocky Horror here with the live shadowcast – our eighth year in total,” said Sean Allen, marketing director for The Albany Palace. He said the first three years did not involve the shadowcast. “Now, of course, we do the movie with the shadowcast on stage.”

The film was an adaptation to the 1973 musical “Rocky Horror

Show.” It paid homage to the classic horror and B-rate films of the 1930s to the early 1970s.

Australian theater director Jim Sharman directed the movie, and he had cast many of the actors from the original musical, with the exception of Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon.

However, despite its popularity today, it received little fanfare in 1975.

Sharman went on to head another film before ultimately returning to a successful career directing theatre productions in Australia. Like a fine wine, many more successes soon followed, but it wasn’t until the film developed a cult following, aided by the side production of audience members.

The punk-infused masquerade that is now associated with the film

longest-running theatrical release in film history.

After nearly four decades, it continues to have a large cult following among midnight movies internationally. In 2005, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. “[I went to a] midnight show at Northway Mall sometime in the early ’80s, probably,” said Saratoga County resident Diane Spencer. “Good times, singing and throwing toast.”

However, Spencer also recalls the next course of events that evening as not being not so fine.

“Driving home to Troy, mind you, with a broken taillight… Cop, impounded vehicle, $35 cab ride home ... Ah! Good times,” she said, laughing.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is rated R,

and it’s not for everyone.

“There’s plenty of cursing and then some, so it’s nothing for kids,” said Albany resident Susan Rice.

The movie is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at The Palace. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster for $7 each.

In the flesh You can also catch a showing of the original musical, “The Rocky Horror Show,” at the Schenectady Light Opera Company this week.

Prop kits are available for the SLOC showing for $5 each. Props from home will not be allowed.

A Harrowing Night at Cherry Hill ALBANY — On Friday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Oct. 25, Historic Cherry Hill will present a dramatic tour reliving the infamous 1827 murder that occurred at the Cherry Hill mansion, one-time home of the Van Rensselaer family.

The public is invited to step into the experiences of the Cherry Hill household on the evening of May 7, 1827, when a hired hand murdered a household member. The dramatic tour will investigate the scene of the crime and the differing perspectives of those who were there on that fateful evening.

Actor James Keil will appear as Jesse Strang, bringing to life the murderer whose violent act was motivated by romantic attachment to his victim’s wife. The murder resulted in two sensational trials and Albany’s last public hanging.

The program will be offered at 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m. on each day. Reservations are required.

Free tours commemorate anniversary ALBANY — To commemorate its 50th anniversary as a museum, Historic Cherry Hill will offer free behindthe-scenes restoration tours during the month of October. Tours will highlight the ongoing restoration of the 1787

historic structure, including factors that contributed to the building’s deterioration and how the building is being stabilized. Guides will also discuss the house’s intact original fabric, its “layers of history,” and the Van Rensselaer family that occupied Cherry Hill from 1787 to 1963. Tours are offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. No reservations are required.

Historic Cherry Hill will also offer behindthe-scenes tours of its collections facility, The Edward Frisbee Center for Collections & Research, on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. and Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. At the Frisbee Center, Director Liselle LaFrance will discuss how the building is used and why it was needed.

Historic Cherry Hill was the home the Van Rensselaer family for five generations, from 1787 to 1963. Upon her death in 1963, Emily Rankin, the last surviving descendant, bequeathed the house and all of its contents to “the people of New York State.”

Music from the sweet spot of life The perfect retro playlist provides the soundtrack to homecoming events

The melodic play of a solo guitar at the opening of Adam’s “Please Forgive Me” takes me to a winter wonderland, as I watched out from my window. Its cadence seems to mimic the slow, gentle path of falling snowflakes. It’s because of this mental image that I can never leave this song off any Homecoming list of mine.

Of course, assembling a well-thought-out playlist is no foreign task for me. But, Spotify and iTunes were not at my disposal in the early ’90s.

It’s a shame, because in terms of Top 40 music, the early ’90s had perhaps the best representation from a wide spectrum of genres – metal, rhythm and blues, rap, New Jack Swing, pop and country.

For example, in 1990, Garth Brook’s country album “No Fences” knocked on the door of Guns ’n’ Roses’ heavy

metal “Lose Your Illusion I & II.” Instead, kids like me developed the lost art of the mix tape. My most aspiring work revolved around “Psych Up” tapes, which I would play before running the hardwood track at the Washington Armory or taking the baseball diamond that was once at the Bethlehem Middle School. (“Paved Paradise” now comes to mind.)

The painstaking attention paid to the placement of each song, the duration of a pause between tracks, made a mixed tape as unique as a fingerprint.

The notes of Lenny Kravitz’ “Are You Gonna Go My Way” and Depeche Mode’s “One Caress” serve as a fingerprint of a friend. It takes me to moonlit jaunts

Country music star Kenny Chesney has released hits like “I Go Back” and, most recently, “American Kids” which both carry reminiscent themes. The latter of his hits invoking the song titles from the mid’80s. But, it’s often the songs from yesterday that provide the best catalyst for conjuring memories of old.

As the fall foliage paints a broad, colorful stroke across the region, area schools start hosting homecoming events to welcome back their alumni, many of whom dedicate hours to arranging playlists of their favorite songs on portable devices or online accounts to share with long-lost friends or just to help establish the carefree mindset that was lost before bills, kids and mortgages came into the picture.

Music, perhaps more than anything else created by man, is timeless.

Remembering back to my own carefree days takes me back to walking the halls of Bethlehem Central (Class of ’91), the hours spent at the campus library at Hudson Valley (Class of ’93), and fighting against the biting Lake Champlain winds at Plattsburgh State (Class of ’95). In my youth, my Sony Walkman was as ever-present as my faded blue jeans and Reebok high tops.

In the fall of 1993, Canadian rocker Bryan Adams released his first collection of greatest hits with “So Far So Good.”

To this day, I can’t help but think of winter snow while listening to this CD. Perhaps it’s because the months that followed this release made up one of the dreariest winters in recent memory.
