Soup’s on in Guilderland Annual event welcomes season with food, fun and fast cars

By JOHN PURCELL purcellj@spotlightnews.com GUIDLERLAND — The leaves are starting to turn and the air is getting chillier so it can mean only one thing in Guilderland: It’s time to slurp some soup.

About a dozen soups will be showcased during the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce’s eighth annual Souped Up on Guilderland event Saturday, Oct. 4, at the YMCA Adventure Camp. The community event features an assortment of soups from local restaurants. People are invited to sample the soups and then vote for their favorites across a few categories. An antique motor vehicle show will also held on site, featuring classic cars, trucks, hot rods, customs and motorcycles.

The event runs from 10 a.m.

At Souped up on Guilderland, participants can pay $5 to taste soups from a number of local restaurants.

The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m.2 p.m.

“We have people that will come just for the car show, but then they will come though the soup line and realize how much fun it is.”

“Nobody has any soup contest really around here,” said Guilderland Chamber President Erika Gauthier. “It is a familyorientated event, and we have people that will come just for the car show, but then they will come though the soup line and realize how much fun it is.”

“If it is a nice day around 700 people will come out,” said Gauthier. “We have had it on rainy Saturdays before; the car show does not turn out great, but

Dave Houle, owner of Grandma’s, said he likes to decorate his table, which is fitting for a restaurant that’s known for its extensive festive decorations. At the restaurant, said Houle, the cream of turkey soup is sold “by the quarts.”

“You think everybody would know us being around so many years, but there is a

lot of people that don’t know us,” he said, “but they find the soup and find us.”

Houle also tends to bring a treat to offer people alongside his soup.

“We have the pumpkin bars with an orange glaze on top … it is very nice,” he said.

Prizes for soup entrants are typically awarded about a half hour before the event ends and the car show will close around noon so there is enough time to tally up ballots.

“We start preparing wardrobe, dressing rooms, washings from the previous city,” said Wood, the head of wardrobe. “On that day, we do about 36 loads of

Suspended from a hoop high above the stage, the artist presents an evocative choreography in which the hoop and body become one in a dance of acrobatic precision.

Another act has six men balancing long decorative poles symbolizing fire.

A traditional act of the Chinese acrobatic arts, the performers keep the poles “in flight” overhead while performing acrobatic feats on the ground.

A blend of the traditional Chinese dragon and lion dances takes on new scope in an energetic tumbling sequence where artists perform acrobatic moves while balancing on large wooden balls as the “Dralion” characters surround them with a spirited dance.

Wood said rips and tears in the costume are the nature of the show. For this reason, each costume has a duplicate piece to be used as a replacement in a pinch, though Wood said

most of the costumes can be quickly repaired with a quick stitch.

“Dralion” is about a quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from the dragon symbolizing the East, and the Lion symbolizing the west. Four elements take on a human form, and each element is represented by a color. The air is blue; the water is green; fire is red and the Earth is ochre.

The show’s costumes are inspired by the colors.

Starting out with a cream color fabric in the paint department in Montreal, the costumes are painted and decorated with unusual materials.

Horse hair, metal, window screen, styrofoam, bubble wrap, bugs and Slinkies are used to bring the costumes to life. The artists in the costume workshop worked for more than three months creating the original costumes for “Dralion.”

For Wood and her crew, it’s an ongoing process, with more than 300 pairs of shoes cleaned and painted by hand every week.

Although Wood said most people are surprised that a majority of the fabric is machine washable, it’s the water in which they are washed that makes costume upkeep challenging.

“It’s been challenging being in so many different countries. The small thing like water. I am used to the condition and feel of the water in London.

Water has a different feel everywhere you go and has a different effect on the costumes,” she said.

Despite all the challenges, Wood said she wouldn’t change her job.

“I love the people, and we are able to travel and arrive at these places and still find the time to go exploring and see new things and still entertain people everyday. It’s amazing,” she said.

After 15 years performing around the world, Albany will have its final opportunity to experience Cirque du Soleil’s “Dralion” from Oct. 2 through Oct. 5.

Student Film Festival will screen the works of 10 finalists

The amount of material that has amassed on the website since its creation nearly 10 years ago has reached a point where the company’s content database scans through the equivalent of 400 years of blooper, prank, monologue, gaming and cat videos every day.

In 1968, when Andy Warhol stated, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes,” he didn’t know just how right he was.

Nearly 50 years after Warhol’s remark, through a joint venture

with the Times Union, The College of Saint Rose will feature the “15 Minutes Max Student Film Festival.”

The festival, which will hold a screening Friday, Oct. 3, is in its third year, and as committee member Liz Richard said, it calls attention to local talent in an ever-growing medium.

“The goal of the festival is to present the best student work in the region and present it to the community at large in the hope that it sparks more interest and production,” said Richards, who is also a visiting instructor of communications at Saint Rose.

That conversation spawned the means of providing Saint Rose students with a “hands on” multimedia competency. From the use of video production assignments to learn foreign languages, to students producing online videos about the advantages and shortcomings of the YouTube culture, to new curriculum focusing on the study of new media, Saint Rose offers a

wide range of opportunities for students to become creative producers and critical consumers of digital video.

With the focus on showcasing the best short films produced by local college students, the festival celebrates and encourages everyone to take an interest in film and new media production.

Those students who contribute to the festival follow specific guidelines. First, the film must run no more than 15

minutes long — hence, the name of the festival. Other guidelines include honoring copyright laws, adhering to a PG-13 film rating, and following the Center of Social Media’s Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video.

More than 40 entries were submitted by students from seven colleges, each with the opportunity to earn prizes ranging from $100 to $500.

Richards said the field of artists exhibited an eclectic array of creativity. One of the finalists, she said, pieced together a film without the use of a camera; several hand-drawn pieces were scanned and later animated in sequence.

“I think that there is so much potential here [in the Capital District],” said Richards. “Speaking from someone who enjoys New York City and what it offers, the city limits us [here] in some ways.”

She said the popular perception is creative talents are immediately drawn away to New York
