The creator of the Nshei Tzedakah Players in 1981, Miriam Handler assembled a talented troupe of gifted women performers, giving them the opportunity to share their talents and uplift the spirits of female audiences around the country, while raising great sums of money for tzedakah for a wide range of vital organizations. After many years of directing high school and camp plays, Miriam returned to the realm of upscale women’s productions, directing Barons and Bankers; The Song of the Hills, English to the T, and last year’s enormously successful That’s My Nanny! for the benefit of Rochel’s Place. These sold-out, live musical extravaganzas enjoyed enormous popularity, and have seen tremendous sales on DVD. Aside from the theatrical world, Miriam currently works as a freelance writer specializing in customized poems, songs and video productions.

Hilarious and versatile, Leah Forster is, quite simply, very funny. Her riotous character roles and her ability to poke fun at some of the ridiculous things we do in our lives, make her a sought-after performer all over the country. Leah’s DVDs are well-loved: particularly Yentatainment, Balabusted, Let’s Get “Leah”biddig! Leah Forster in the Tirtzah Series, and her newest laugh riot, The Multimasker.

Putting aside her pride, the girl’s mother called Ten Yad to see if we could help. Holding back the tears, she told us that they didn’t even have the money to buy the smallest thing for the wedding ... if there was a wedding at all.

Ten Yad is made up of dedicated volunteers who run every aspect of this 31-year-old organization. But you are the ones who make it possible. Your outpouring of love and generosity pays for her gown, sheitel and other wedding expenses, and every pot and pan in her home.

When we heard this story, our hearts broke. We offered all that we could to make sure nothing would stand in the way of a beautiful kallah and her bashert standing under the chuppah on their wedding day.

If some heart-rending circumstance made her less fortunate, is she any less deserving of beginning her binyan adei ad as a queen? With your help, a destitute or orphaned bride can experience the joy of preparing to take her place as a married Jewish woman.

She started to cry when we told her that we would be providing her daughter with the necessities of a beautiful wedding and the essentials of a Jewish home. We told her about the gorgeous bridal gown her daughter would get to choose from our elegant showroom, the sheitel we would be providing, the stipend toward her trousseau, and the two sets of quality dishes, flatware, pots and pans, towels, linens, pillows and blankets for her home.

It is impossible to describe what a special moment it was when the kallah found out everything we would provide and said, “Now I can get married.” With gratitude and renewed strength, this precious kallah walked to her chuppah with joy and dignity.

But even more is the Divine light that permeates our life when we experience the joy of helping a precious kallah. The Gemara tells us that the Divine Presence comes to rest upon a person specifically through simcha shel mitzvah, to which Rashi comments: “For example, hachnosas kallah.”

We invite you to experience the simcha shel mitzvah of giving a destitute or orphaned bride a chance to start her new life with hope and joy. And through performing the mitzvah of hachnosas kallah, may the Divine Presence rest on the entire world in the Ultimate Redemption with the immediate coming of Moshiach.        

Shlomo Zalman Gelernter ‫ע''ה‬ 1925-2014

R

abbi Shlomo Zalmen Gelernter ‫ ע''ה‬and his aishes chayil Shayndel ‫ ע''ה‬were pillars of chesed to many people in need and particularly to those in Crown Heights.

Many were associated with Rabbi Gelernter through the Anshei H’Rubishov shul which he established upon the directive of the Lubavitcher Rebbe in the mid 1960’s. It was founded in memory of the kedoshim of his hometown of H’Rubishov who perished Al Kiddush Hashem in the Holocaust.

The shul is a place that welcomes everyone with warmth and acceptance. It is part of the legacy Rabbi and Mrs. Gelernter leave behind. The shul continues to thrive upon the tenets of extending caring and kindness to all.

The performance of chesed was an ongoing norm throughout their lives. The hallmarks of their kindness meant giving discreetly and anonymously.

While fighting for his survival during the horrific times of the Holocaust, Rabbi Gelernter managed to help Yidden obtain food while risking his own life.

After the war many attested that their survival was due to his great mesiras nefesh.

Shaindel Gelernter ‫ע''ה‬ 1931-2013

Rabbi Gelernter was a pioneer in the early days of the Rebbe’s nesius following the directives of the Rebbe.

Taking the Rebbe’s words to heart he was very active in the Rebbe’s mivtzoim bringing Yidden closer to yiddishkeit.

Mrs. Gelernter was a regal woman who personified integrity, compassion and devotion to her family and to the many people whom she helped.

Separated from her father at a young age during WWII, she endured great hardship in Siberia, continuously being transported from one place to another.

Despite her challenging circumstances during her youth, Mrs. Gelernter remained steadfast in her commitment to yiddishkeit and dedication to the love of Torah and mitzvos throughout her life.

Together they merited to raise a beautiful family with yiras shomayim and warmth and merited the zchus that their children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren continue their honorable legacy of spreading the light of yiddishkeit throughout the world.

May we be zoche to the coming of Moshiach and be reunited with our loved ones speedily in our days.
