My Pesach Diary Pesach 2001 The diamond sparkling on my finger reflects the light of the candles.

I stroke the cover of my new leather-bound Haggaddah, inhaling its distinct smell.

I glance at Menachem in trepidation. Is the Seder very different from that of his parents’? Are there too many minhagim that he has never heard of ?

As the eldest in the family, I was the first one to take this big step.

Now, just three weeks after my elaborate engagement party, we are all seated around the Seder table.

There is a whisper of joy pulsating through the night.

Tatty is leaning over to him, whispering something while pointing to a phrase in the Haggadah. Menachem whispers back and Tatty gives him an approving glance.

I feel my mother’s eyes on me. She smiles indulgently and I realize that once again, my mind has wandered.

Pesach 2004 We sit next to each other, Sarala and I. Our leather Haggados are nearly identical, though mine boasts some signs of use. Well, after three years, it’s only natural.

It’s strange to have Sarala on board. Throughout the years, she was always two steps behind me.

And now – now we are standing together, on the same rung of the ladder.

It feels a bit crowded.

I hope…I hope she doesn’t climb

to the next level before me. That’s not the way it’s supposed to be.

Pesach 2007 The wailing catches me unawares. I mean, I know that babies cry…but does he have to cry so loud?

Pesach 2008 It’s quiet. So…quiet.

The table is set beautifully, with two lone candles reigning over it with aplomb. Those are my candles. Tonight it’s all mine.

Sarala cradles him in her arms, and his wailing subsides. My heart squeezes…squeezes so tight that I am afraid it will crumble.

I also want to sit at the Seder table, rubbing my tired eyes and wishing that my child would remain calm long enough for me to drink the entire glass of wine.

My mother’s eyes are averted.

She is staring intently at the fringes of the tablecloth but I sense her focus on me. My mind has wandered, once again.

The Seder night is not supposed to be so orderly and silent. But… this was my decision. I refused to subject myself to the pity, the odd silences, and the stilted conversations.

Menachem is pouring bright red wine into his glistening goblet.

Strange. This must be the first time I hear the gurgle of wine flowing.

The soft sound pulls my thoughts back from whence they have wandered.

Pesach 2012 Ten years ago, Menachem and I sat at my parents’ table. A young couple awash with dreams.

Outwardly, nothing changed.

We’re still just a couple. Two lonely souls adrift in a sea of grandchildren.

I shudder. Why did I think I can do this?

Remember the segulah, I whisper desperately. That’s why you came this year.

I had been told that when a father blesses his child before the Mah Nishtanah, where the Haggadah tells us kan haben shoel (‘here the child asks’), his blessing is powerful.

I will ask. I will beg my father to bless me at that moment and maybe…just maybe…that will be the key to my salvation.

I had wanted to discuss my segulah with Tatty in advance, but…I couldn’t.

“Remember, Zevi,” Sarala is coaching her little boy. “Say it loud so that Mommy could hear every word.”

You feel my pain. I don’t have to gather any courage to ask – for You know...

It’s now or never. I swallow my pride and step firmly on my shame.

“Tatty.”

Tatty looks up. He blinks.

My vocal chords betray me. The mountain of pain that I had carefully suppressed these last few days now rises into my throat and prevents me from speaking.

Here the child asks. This is your chance – and you’re losing it!

You’re here for this very moment.

Don’t let it slip –

But it does. The moment slips through my fingers. I feel Menachem prodding me wordlessly from across the table, but I cannot summon the courage to ask; to plead; to beg for life.

about his experience at the A TIME Shabbaton “...It was an unforgettable evening which began when I received a call from Mrs. Rosen inviting me to come out to the hotel on Motzei Shabbos and do a performance of my show called “A Journey Through Jewish Music.” At first, when I walked into this large and beautifully appointed hotel dining room, I didn’t know what to expect.

All around me there were couples representing every ‘type’ of Yid. It felt like I had walked in and had met the proverbial Klal Yisroel.

There were Chassidim, Litvaks, Sefardim, Askenazim, Young Israel types, Israelis – all seated together. Let me tell you something. I have a weakness! I love every Yid, of every type and stripe and when I walked in to this room I felt like I had come home. The scene for me was simply spectacular!

During my performance, suddenly everyone, all these different Yidden stood up getting ready to dance. It was overwhelming to me as I couldn’t help wondering what this dance would look like. I mean, with all these different people joining together… The atmosphere was charged! It was like all of Klal Yisroel dancing at once. As the circle went around, the scenery kept on changing. They were all so different…yet so alike.

I felt the unity, and in my own little way I felt the challenges that they face daily. I saw how they united around A TIME, being together and spending a weekend sharing and comforting one another.

That night I was deeply touched and proud, oh so proud of belonging to this precious Klal Yisroel...”

My mother and sisters were clustered near the mechitzah, staring raptly at my boy-turned-man. I stood near them, basking in their effusive warmth and joy.

“Chaya! Mazel Tov!” Shaindy exclaimed.

Shaindy was the one person I had most dreaded meeting after my return from the hospital, fourteen years ago. After all, we had spent weeks and months planning together – and now our paths had diverged. I was mourn-

ing that which was and would never be, while she was tenderly cradling her newborn daughter.

I had stashed the unused cradle in my parents’ basement, while hers was blissfully occupied by a gorgeous little girl.

The meeting was inevitable. I mean, there’s only so long one can avoid her closest friend.

“Shaindy,” I mumbled that morning, seven weeks after my dreams had turned to dust. “Mazel Tov.” The words were clumped together, falling roughly over each other as I pushed them out of my

mouth. Shaindy appeared stricken by my presence.

“Oh, Chaya. I – I think about you all the time.”

Silence.

“So…how are you?”

I shrugged. Shaindy knew the answer to that one. I was angry, disappointed, hurt, broken, shattered – and desperate to pretend.

“Whatever,” I finally mumbled.

“What’s doing on your end?”

Shaindy was reluctant to answer.

She muttered something about being tired and overwhelmed, then quickly bit her lip and looked away.

It was a strange encounter. We were supposed to be strolling along the streets, two young mothers coddling their newborns.

Instead, I was standing awkwardly with my hands dangling in the air, while Shaindy tried to block my view of her little girl.

“Uh…I better go. My husband is probably getting worried,” I lied blithely.

Shaindy nodded and waved. I watched as she cooed gently to her daughter and adjusted her plush pink blanket. Then I turned away and ran home as fast as propriety allowed. The streets had become my enemy. They teemed with newborn babies and radiant mothers. It seemed that only I – Chaya Silber – was doomed to a life of nothingness. Only I had to say goodbye to my little girl before we had a chance for a proper ‘hello’.

She was gone.

My parents and siblings were certain that I would get over it in due time. There will be others, Chaya. It was meant to be. Hashem wanted this pure neshama up there, with the tzaddikim. You will move on. You will forget.

The streets had become my enemy.

They teemed with newborn babies and radiant mothers. It seemed that only I – Chaya Silber – was doomed to a life of nothingness...

But I didn’t forget. I held onto those memories tightly, because they were all I had left of my firstborn child. I didn’t allow them to fade into oblivion. I cried and I mourned every year when that fateful date loomed on the calendar. And in the crying, I found relief. It was my connection to my little girl. ***

“Chaya! You’re not listening!”

Shaindy exclaimed.

I nodded in her direction, strangely comforted by my memories.

Everyone else may have forgotten the girl that wasn’t, but for me – she would live on forever. She was here, at her brother’s bar mitzvah.

The memory was painful but it was tangible. It was all I had left.
