Welcome to Spotlight ILLUSTRATED

After 30 years of coaching football, I am thrilled to be embarking on a new chapter in my life as the editor of Spotlight Illustrated, a magazine produced by the Spotlight Media Network and YSN. This exciting venture will allow me to showcase the world of high school football in our area.

Spotlight Illustrated covers 24 teams with in-depth coverage that includes insights, interviews, features, and captivating photos. Our goal is to highlight the dedication, talent, and passion that define high school football. Our High School preview will dive deep into the stories that matter most to players, coaches, and fans alike.

In addition to the magazine, Spotlight Illustrated will feature a weekly online show titled The View From the End Zone. This show will keep everyone updated with the latest Friday night news, scores, and highlights. It's the perfect way to stay connected to the world of high school football in our area.

Football has been a cornerstone of my life, and I feel truly blessed to begin this new journey. Continuing The Momentum The Alliance High School football team concluded their 2024 season on a high note, securing victories against Minerva and Marlington with over 40 points scored in each game. This strong finish has set the stage for what promises to be an exciting 2025 season.

This year, Alliance boasts a significant increase in senior leadership, going from just three seniors in 2024 to fifteen in 2025. With nine returning starters on offense and eight on defense, as well as seasoned special teams players, the team is poised for success. Coach Goodman expressed enthusiasm about the competitive spirit in camp practices, noting the benefits of having experienced players who understand the system and can play with greater speed and efficiency.

Alliance opens their season against the formidable Padua Franciscan Bruins, a team that has reached the region 10 semi-finals three of the last five years. The schedule also includes challenging matchups against Louisville, Canton Central Catholic, and West Branch within the Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC). The team will face the physical Carrollton Warriors, the Salem Quakers with their standout quarterback, and the West Branch Warriors, who have become the team to beat in the EBC. Key Players to Watch Rvon Hawkins (Running Back): Entering his third year as a starter, Hawkins is expected to have a breakout season after rushing for 800 yards and receiving a couple of hundred yards last year.

Jared Blair (Wide Receiver): Despite an injury-shortened 2024, Blair showed promise with 400 receiving yards in eight games. His exceptional speed and athleticism, as demonstrated by his success in track and field, will be crucial this season.

Key Players to Watch DJ Gaish and Kanan Jones (Offensive Line): Both are twoyear starters who have shown considerable promise and are expected to lead the offensive line effectively.

J.R. Jackson (Cornerback/Quarterback): A dual-threat athlete, J.R. is one of the county's top corners and a capable quarterback, having thrown for about 1,300 yards last year. His skills extend beyond football, as he is also an All-Ohio basketball player.

Coach Goodman is entering his fifth year as head coach, Coach Goodman is optimistic about the program's direction. He aims to build upon the foundation laid in previous years, fostering growth through the team's core beliefs and values. With a blend of experienced seniors and talented underclassmen, Alliance is poised for a successful 2025 season.

In 2024, Alliance fielded a youthful team after losing several key players who had etched their names in the Alliance record books.

Despite facing a challenging schedule, the young players gained valuable experience, culminating in victories in three of their last five games. This late-season momentum provided a solid foundation for the offseason and instilled confidence going into 2025.

Setting The Tone In his inaugural year at McKinley, Coach Parnell is filled with enthusiasm as he embraces the opportunity to coach in an environment rich with history and tradition. His primary focus is preparing the Bulldogs to leave a significant mark on the field.

Coach Parnell arrives at McKinley after an 11-year tenure at Akron Hoban, bringing a wealth of knowledge and a commitment to reenergize this winning culture. His strategy emphasizes meticulous attention to detail and the importance of mastering the fundamentals. By focusing on selfimprovement and preparation, Coach Parnell aims to correct minor errors that can lead to significant improvements.

As the Bulldogs prepare to face Warren, a skilled and well-coached team, Coach Parnell stresses consistency in expectations. He instills in his players the understanding that meeting daily demands and perfecting the little things will ultimately guide them toward their ambitious goals: a State Championship and, ultimately, a National Championship.

The McKinley versus Massillon rivalry is legendary, and Coach Parnell approaches it with deep respect.

Having faced Massillon during his time at Hoban, he now relishes the intensified experience of this historic matchup from McKinley's side.

As Canton South gears up for the upcoming football season, Coach Dennison is optimistic about the wealth of experience gained by his young players last year. With several sophomores having spent significant time on the field, their development is expected to pay dividends this season.

The offensive line remains largely intact, with only one departure.

Six players who started at least one game last season are returning, providing a solid foundation. Coach Dennison is eager to capitalize on this continuity and experience by focusing on a strong running game, which aligns with his coaching roots.

Deangelo Spear, a two-year captain, stands out as a pivotal leader. Anchoring the senior group, Spear is the driving force behind the defense, ensuring everything runs smoothly up front.

Andrew Marsh returns to bolster both the offensive and defensive lines, bringing versatility and experience to the team.

After an impressive season last year, James Bryson is set to return and make significant contributions to the defense once again.

Jonathan Koffel-Black will resume his role as center on the offensive line, providing stability and leadership at a crucial position.

The Falcons open their season with a much-anticipated game against Sandy Valley on a Thursday night. Historically, matches between Fairless and Sandy Valley have been closely contested, with the last two encounters being decided by a single score. It’s a game that both teams eagerly await each year.

Following the home opener, the Falcons face a daunting five-week stretch on the road, traveling to Waynedale, Claymont, Tusky Valley, Orville, and Triway. This extensive road trip will be a test of endurance and resilience, as they spend the entire month of September away from home. After this, they return to host the formidable Manchester, a team that is always a difficult opponent.

Coach Sarbaugh has focused on playing strong competition and scheduling local teams. This season, the Falcons will see their quarterback, all three receivers, and both tight ends returning, providing a solid foundation for the team's offense.

However, the offensive line will see mostly new faces, with only one returning lineman.

Massillon faces a formidable schedule, considered one of the toughest in the state. Fortunately, the first nine games will be held at the home field, Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, a strategic move by Coach Moore to maximize fan support. The season opener against state powerhouse Cleveland, Glenville, promises to draw significant statewide attention.

The schedule also features games against four out-of-state opponents, a Canadian team, and the storied rivalry game against McKinley. These matchups will test Massillon's mettle, as many of their opponents boast rosters with top 50 national recruits. Coach Moore points out that the visiting teams relish the experience of playing in front of Massillon’s passionate fans, and the Tigers themselves thrive on these highstakes encounters.

The team faces a transition on the offensive side, having graduated several key players. It encouraged players to hold each other accountable, set and uphold high standards, and align their efforts towards common goals. Coach Moore stresses that the qualities that make great football players—dedication, accountability, and integrity—are the same qualities that make great men, students, and future fathers.

This success is a testament to the leadership of Coach Cooper, who took over the program in 2019 when it was in a rebuilding phase with only 43 players. Now, the Warriors have nearly doubled their roster, boasting 84 players from grades 9-12.

Last year, the Warriors' playoff run ended against Cleveland Glenville, a team renowned for its strength.

Coach Cooper remains focused on preparing his team for such highlevel competition, especially as Glenville begins their season against powerhouse Massillon.

Key Returning Starters Jeremiah Thomas: The dynamic quarterback returns, having been a first-team All-State player.

Although last year was his first at quarterback, Thomas showcased his versatility by rushing for nearly 1,000 yards and passing for almost 2,000. Notably, he often didn't play the second half due to West Branch's dominant performances.

Gavin Gregory: The Toledo commit returns at tight end.
