Ground Broken for Almost Heaven Ice Cream's New Louisville Location

LOUISVILLE, Ohio — A sweet new chapter is officially underway for the City of Louisville.

On Monday, July 27, 2026, representatives from Almost Heaven Ice Cream, city officials, community leaders, and project partners gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the company's newest location on Williamsburg Way, just off California Avenue, next to the Altman Foundation and across the street from Dunkin'.

The new development marks the fifth Stark County location for the family-owned ice cream company, joining its existing stores in Canton, Alliance, Canal Fulton, and Hartville.

Founded in 2006 by the Truax family, Almost Heaven Ice Cream has built a reputation as one of Ohio's premier homemade ice cream destinations. Known for its super-premium, rich flavors and homemade waffle cones, the company has earned numerous honors in national dairy competitions, including a recent firstplace award, giving it recognition for producing what many now call the world's best ice cream.

While the retail stores have become a favorite destination for families throughout the region, the company has also grown into a thriving business serving weddings, special events, catering, and a substantial wholesale operation.

Ground Broken for Almost Heaven Ice Cream's New Louisville Location

The Louisville project has been years in the making.

Discussions first began during the administration of former Louisville Mayor Pat Fallot and continued under the city's current leadership. Owners Todd and Matt Truax said Louisville's willingness to work alongside their team made all the difference.

In addition to a new retail ice cream shop, the project will include a 13,000-square-foot production facility, allowing the company to expand its manufacturing operations while creating new jobs and making a significant investment in Louisville's local economy.

City officials worked closely with the Truax family throughout the planning process. After collaboration with Louisville City Council—including assistance through a tax abatement and other landrelated arrangements—the project became a reality.

According to the owners, Louisville wasn't the only community being considered. Hartville was also in the running for the expansion, but Louisville's commitment to the project ultimately secured the investment.

Leading construction is Phil Adkins of Adkins Building Company, who said the goal is to have both the retail location and production facility completed and ready to open by early summer 2027.

The groundbreaking represents another major economic development milestone for Louisville, bringing new jobs, increased manufacturing capacity, and another well-known local business into the community.

Among the key topics of discussion was a pending congressional appropriation that would provide funding to help modernize Louisville's wastewater treatment plant. Modernizing the wastewater treatment plant would provide numerous long-term benefits for Louisville.

An upgraded facility would improve the reliability and efficiency of the city's wastewater system, help meet current and future environmental regulations, reduce the likelihood of costly emergency repairs, and better support future residential, commercial, and industrial development. As Louisville continues to grow, investing in critical infrastructure helps ensure the city is prepared to meet the needs of residents and businesses for years to come.

Infrastructure improvements also play a significant role in attracting new businesses and retaining existing ones. City of Louisville Announces 2026 Street Paving Program LOUISVILLE, Ohio — The City of Louisville has announced its 2026 Street Paving Program, outlining the streets and areas expected to receive resurfacing and repairs as part of the City's continued investment in local infrastructure.

The City has allocated $300,000 in the 2026 budget for the paving program. According to the Louisville Public Works Department, the final scope of work may change depending on the amount of asphalt required for each roadway and the conditions encountered during construction.

Summer Serenades Brings Beautiful Music to Metzger Park LOUISVILLE, Ohio — The sounds of violins and strings echoed through Metzger Park Pavilion as the Canton Symphony Orchestra brought one of its talented ensembles to Louisville as part of its popular Summer Serenadesconcert series.

The event showcased more than just exceptional musicianship—it demonstrated how public parks can serve as gathering places where people of all ages can connect through the arts. Whether guests came specifically for the concert or simply stumbled upon the performance while visiting the park, the evening offered something for everyone.

The free, family-friendly event transformed the park into an outdoor concert venue where the natural sounds of birds, gentle breezes, and children enjoying the park blended seamlessly with the elegant performance of a live string quartet. The result was a relaxing summer evening that highlighted the beauty of both music and nature.

Summer Serenades is an annual concert series that brings small ensembles from the Canton Symphony Orchestra to Stark Parks locations and township and city parks throughout Stark County. An estimated 200 people attended the Louisville performance, bringing lawn chairs, blankets, picnic dinners, and outdoor games to enjoy an evening filled with music and community. The Summer Serenades series is made possible through the support of several community partners, including Stark Parks, Friends of Stark Parks, ArtsinStark, Visit Canton, the Mary Renkert Wendling Foundation, and the Rotary Clubs of Stark County. Their continued partnership helps bring high-quality musical performances to neighborhoods and communities throughout Stark County at no cost to attendees.

kroger to Acquire Giant Eagle: What It Means for Louisville Shoppers Louisville residents who shop at the local Giant Eagle can expect to see some changes in the years ahead, but for now, it will largely be business as usual.

The Kroger Co. announced on July 1, 2026, that it has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Giant Eagle in a transaction valued at $1.65 billion.

The acquisition includes $1.25 billion in cash and the assumption of $400 million in liabilities, expanding Kroger's presence across northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana.

The agreement is expected to close sometime in 2027, pending federal regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.

What This Means for Louisville's Giant Eagle For shoppers at the Louisville Giant Eagle, there are no immediate changes expected.

According to Kroger, Giant Eagle stores will continue operating under the Giant Eagle name as a division of Kroger. That means customers should continue to see the familiar Giant Eagle branding, and the company's myPerks rewards and fuel savings program is expected to remain in place.

The Giant Eagle headquarters will also remain in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, and the company will continue operating its Market District stores and Giant Eagle pharmacies under their existing names.

Just as importantly for local employees, Kroger has not announced any frontline job eliminations or planned store closures while the acquisition is being reviewed.

Could Louisville See Changes Later?

While shoppers likely won't notice much difference in the short term, the longer-term picture could evolve once the acquisition is finalized.

Because Kroger already operates stores throughout Northeast Ohio, federal regulators may require the company to sell a limited number of overlapping locations to maintain competition. At this time, neither company has identified which, if any, stores could be affected.

Another possibility is pricing. Kroger's larger national buying power may allow the company to negotiate lower costs with suppliers, which could eventually translate into lower prices on some grocery items.

Both grocery chains have built loyal customer followings for different reasons.

The acquisition includes 197 supermarkets and 11 standalone pharmacies, making it one of the larger grocery transactions in recent years.

Kroger is often recognized for competitive everyday pricing and large-scale purchasing power, while Giant Eagle has earned praise for its fresh bakery offerings, prepared foods, specialty products, and community-focused shopping experience. Market District locations, in particular, have developed a reputation for premium grocery selections.

For Louisville shoppers, the good news is that Kroger says Giant Eagle's identity—including its stores, pharmacy operations, and customer rewards programs—is expected to remain intact following the acquisition.

For now, Louisville customers can continue shopping exactly as they always have. Any significant operational changes are not expected until after the acquisition receives regulatory approval and the transition process moves forward in 2027.

Jen White, the guest speaker, gave an insightful talk on conservation and environmental stewardship.

She highlighted the significance of watersheds, native plants, and the role of insects in maintaining ecological balance. Jen encouraged attendees to replace invasive plant species with native ones and adopt ecologically functional landscapes. She emphasized the importance of individual actions in conservation, suggesting practical steps like creating rain gardens and using rain barrels to manage water flow and improve local ecosystems.

Jen also shared her passion for insects and their crucial role in the food chain, explaining how they support bird populations by providing essential nutrients. She addressed common misconceptions about insects and advocated for embracing biodiversity in gardens. Jen's talk underscored the interconnectedness of nature and the impact of human choices on the environment.

Worship on Main Returns After Smoke Delay, Brings Community Together in Downtown Louisville Louisville, Ohio — After being postponed because of poor air quality caused by Canadian wildfire smoke, Worship on Main made its long-awaited return to downtown Louisville on July 25, 2026, proving that a little patience can lead to something truly special.

Originally scheduled for an earlier date, organizers made the difficult but necessary decision to postpone the event in the interest of public health and safety as smoke from the Canadian forest fires created unhealthy air conditions across the region. When the skies finally cleared, the community responded with an uplifting evening of faith, fellowship, and worship.

Held on the downtown green space, Worship on Main continues to fulfill its mission of bringing the Body of Christ together through worship, testimony, prayer, and praise. The interdenominational gathering welcomes people from every church background—as well as those who may not currently have a church home. The heart of the ministry is simple: to worship Jesus together outside the walls of a church building while sharing His love with the community.

July's worship music was led by Holy Harmony, a team of worship leaders from North Canton Church of Christ, joined by special guest worship leader Chad Chaney of Medina. In addition to leading worship, Chaney records original Christian music that is available on Spotify.

One of the evening's most impactful moments came during the personal testimony shared by Josh Sheffer.

Sheffer openly spoke about the struggles he faced growing up in a divorced home, his journey into drug addiction, and the transformation that came as he pursued

God's purpose for his life. He shared how his faith helped him overcome addiction, experience healing from a chronic illness, and discover hope and restoration through Jesus Christ. His honest and heartfelt story resonated deeply with those in attendance.

Worship on Main has quickly become more than just an event—it's a place where churches unite, friendships are formed, and people are encouraged in their faith. The gathering welcomes longtime believers, those beginning their spiritual journey, and anyone simply seeking answers in a welcoming and judgment-free environment.

Volunteers and leaders from many different congregations work together with one common purpose: helping people know and experience the love of Jesus Christ.

Looking ahead, organizers are already excited about what's to come.

Amanda Bachman Probst shared, "Looking ahead, our October gathering will feature special guest John Waller and his family leading worship." Waller is a nationally recognized Christian recording artist whose music has been featured in several faith-based films, making his upcoming appearance an exciting opportunity for the Louisville community.

Meyer Sisters Continue Family Tradition at Canton Hall of Fame Up Up and Away 5K CANTON, Ohio — Before beginning the next chapter of her remarkable running career at the University of Findlay, Louisville track standout Kylah Meyer laced up her racing shoes one more time for a tradition that has become a family favorite.

For the sixth consecutive year, Kylah and her sister, Hayden Meyer, competed together in the Canton Hall of Fame Up Up and Away 5K, continuing a tradition that has brought both competition and cherished memories.

Kylah once again crossed the finish line first, capturing her fifth consecutive Up Up and Away 5K championship with an impressive time of 17:56. Even more remarkable, Kylah's performance came after being asked by her coach to ease off the pace as she prepares for the upcoming collegiate season with the University of Findlay Oilers. Despite holding back, she still delivered a winning performance and added another title to her already outstanding résumé.

Her younger sister, Hayden, also turned in an exceptional race. Hayden finished 6th overall while claiming 1st place in her age group with a strong time of 19:08, continuing to establish herself as one of the area's top young distance runners.

The race marked a fitting conclusion to an incredible summer for Kylah, who leaves Louisville after one of the most decorated track careers in school history. She now sets her sights on competing at the NCAA level with the Findlay Oilers, where she will continue building upon an already impressive legacy.

While Kylah embarks on her collegiate journey, the Meyer family's annual tradition at the Canton Hall of Fame Up Up and Away 5K serves as a reminder that some of the best moments in sports are shared with family.

Louisville Leopard Football Ring of Honor Returns for Historic Fifth Induction Class The rich tradition of Louisville Leopard Football will once again take center stage as the Louisville Leopard Football Ring of Honor returns to Leopard Stadium on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.

The annual celebration has become one of the program’s most meaningful traditions, honoring the players, coaches, and contributors who helped build one of Stark County’s premier football programs.

Now entering its fifth year, the Ring of Honor was established to preserve and celebrate the remarkable history of Louisville Leopard Football.

For generations, the Leopards have been recognized as one of the county’s elite programs, with a tradition of excellence that many place alongside perennial powers Massillon and Canton McKinley.

Each year, the Ring of Honor has recognized individuals whose impact extended far beyond Friday nights.

The inaugural inductee was Bob Gladieux, whom longtime sportswriter Todd Porter described as one of the “Mount Rushmore of Stark County Football.”

Gladieux starred for the Leopards before continuing his legendary career at the University of Notre Dame. He played a pivotal role in one of college football’s most iconic moments, making what is widely regarded as one of the greatest catches in college football history during the legendary “Game of the Century” against Michigan State. That victory helped propel the Fighting Irish to a national championship and cemented Gladieux’s place in football history.

Louisville Leopard Football Ring of Honor Returns for Historic Fifth Induction Class (Continued) The second Ring of Honor inductee was Mark Stier, one of Louisville’s greatest defensive standouts. Stier continued his career under legendary coach Woody Hayes at Ohio State University, where he became the Most Valuable Player of the 1969 Rose Bowl. His memorable forced fumble against Heisman Trophy winner O.J. Simpson helped lead the Buckeyes to a national championship, forever linking another Louisville Leopard to college football greatness.

Year three celebrated Tom Chlebeck, whose athletic talents extended well beyond the football field. A standout in both football and baseball at Louisville, Chlebeck went on to the University of Cincinnati, where he excelled in both sports for the Bearcats. After focusing on baseball, he enjoyed an outstanding collegiate career and was eventually named the most Valuable Player of Cincinnati’s baseball program.

The fourth inductee recognized one of the true architects of Louisville Football, Coach Gaylord “Hap” Lillick. Widely regarded as the foundation upon which the program’s tradition was built, Lillick established the culture, discipline, and expectations that shaped generations of Leopard football players. During his induction, Mark Stier summed up Lillick’s impact best by saying, “Without Hap, there was none of us.”

Now, the Ring of Honor turns its attention to the future by honoring the very foundation that has helped sustain Louisville’s success for decades.

The 2026 Ring of Honor inductee is the Louisville Little Leopard Program.

Founded by a dedicated group of community leaders and volunteers, the Little Leopard Program has introduced countless young athletes to the game of football while emphasizing proper fundamentals, teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. More importantly, the program has instilled the pride, tradition, and championship culture that have defined Louisville Football for generations. For many players, their journey to Friday night lights at Leopard Stadium began as a Little Leopard, learning not only the skills of the game but what it truly means to wear the Louisville colors.

The induction serves as a fitting tribute to the coaches, volunteers, parents, and supporters who have dedicated countless hours to developing young athletes while helping preserve one of Stark County’s proudest football traditions.

The Louisville Leopard Football Ring of Honor has quickly become more than an awards ceremony—it is a celebration of the people, memories, and legacy that continue to shape the program. As another chapter is added to that history on August 5, fans of all ages are encouraged to gather at Leopard Stadium to honor those who have made Louisville Football what it is today.

Frank M. Cosentino Frank M. Cosentino was born in Canton, Ohio, on July 29, 1939, and spent his entire life in the Canton area until his death on July 18, 2026.

Frank enjoyed golf, travel, good food and wine, and his beloved wife, Shirley. He was a Veteran, serving in the Army from 1963-1964. Their loved poodle, Coco, was also a special light in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, and brothers.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley. A special thanks and appreciation to special friends and neighbors Steve and Diana.

They were wonderful friends, helpers and supporters, especially the last couple of years during Frank and Shirley’s health struggles.

Before that, Frank and Steve regularly went to Dunkin’ for coffee and a donut.

Services for Frank will be held Thursday, July 23rd, at 1:00, with calling one hour prior to the service being held at Paquelet-Falk Funeral Home in Louisville. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in his name.
