Canadian Wildfire Smoke Brings Hazy Skies to Louisville and Northeast Ohio If you looked outside last week and noticed hazy skies or smelled smoke in the air, you were not imagining it. A massive plume of wildfire smoke from Canada has drifted south and settled across Northeast Ohio, including Louisville, creating noticeably smoky conditions throughout the area.

Meteorologists say the current wind pattern has acted like an atmospheric expressway, carrying smoke from active Canadian wildfires across the Great Lakes and directly into Ohio. As a result, visibility has been reduced, the smell of smoke has become noticeable, and air quality has deteriorated significantly.

The increase in smoke has prompted the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) to issue a statewide Air Quality Advisory. The heavy concentration of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, has caused air quality in many areas to reach unhealthy levels, particularly for sensitive groups.

Don't Forget About Your Pets Poor air quality doesn't just affect people—it can also impact pets. Dogs, cats, and other animals breathe in the same fine particles found in wildfire smoke, which can irritate their eyes and respiratory systems. Pets are often even more vulnerable because they are closer to the ground, where some smoke particles can become more concentrated, and certain breeds naturally have narrower airways.

How to Stay Safe Health officials recommend taking extra precautions while the smoky conditions remain:

Limit outdoor activities, especially strenuous exercise or prolonged time outside.

Children, older adults, and individuals with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions should stay indoors with windows and doors closed whenever possible.

If you need to drive, use your vehicle's air conditioning on the recirculate setting to help keep smoky air from entering the cabin.

Keep pets indoors as much as possible.

Limit walks and outdoor play until air quality improves.

Ensure fresh water is always available.

Watch for signs of coughing, difficulty breathing, excessive eye irritation, or unusual lethargy. If symptoms become severe, contact your veterinarian.

Forecasters expect conditions to improve once weather patterns shift and winds carry the smoke away from the region. Until then, residents are encouraged to monitor local air quality reports and take appropriate precautions.

Information Released on Freight Train Delay That Blocked Louisville Crossings LOUISVILLE, Ohio — New information has been released regarding the freight train that recently blocked several major roadways leading into Louisville, causing lengthy traffic delays and widespread frustration among motorists.

Initial reports indicated the delays were related to operations in the Canton rail yard. However, following an inquiry by Louisville City Manager Andrew Turowski, Ashton Harley, Sr. Agent – Railway Investigations, provided additional details explaining what led to the unusual situation.

According to Harley, the train arrived in Canton carrying a large number of railcars that needed to be set out in the rail yard. However, the normal route into the west end of the yard was unavailable because of an earlier derailment that had damaged a crossover switch and blocked one of the main tracks.

The prolonged delays affected several major crossings into Louisville, including: • North Chapel Street • State Route 153 (Main Street) • Beck Avenue • Broadway Avenue Emergency Services Stayed Prepared Throughout the incident, Louisville's emergency response agencies remained in constant communication to ensure public safety.

The Louisville Police Department, Louisville Fire Department, and Nimishillen Township Fire Department coordinated contingency plans in the event emergency vehicles needed to reach calls while the crossings were blocked. Their ongoing communication helped ensure emergency services remained prepared despite the transportation challenges.

With the normal access point unavailable, train crews were forced to perform additional switching movements from another location to move the Canton-bound railcars into the yard. Because of the train's length and the large number of railcars involved, the train temporarily occupied several public crossings while crews completed the work.

Harley also stated that the operation took longer than normal because of ongoing reenactment and investigation activities associated with the earlier derailment.

"The damaged switch has since been repaired, and the conditions that led to this unusual situation have been resolved. We do not anticipate needing to repeat this operation under normal circumstances," Harley wrote in his correspondence to Turowski.

He also apologized for the inconvenience caused to the Louisville community.

Concerns About Railroad Crossings City Manager Andrew Turowski also addressed another concern frequently raised by residents—the condition of the railroad crossings at Louisville's main entrances.

According to Turowski, the City has received numerous complaints regarding the rough condition of both the railroad tracks and the roadway approaches at the crossings. Norfolk Southern has inspected the crossings and informed the City that, while they acknowledge the condition, they consider the crossings to be operational and not currently in need of repair.

Information Released on Freight Train Delay That Blocked Louisville Crossings (continued) Turowski said Norfolk Southern did indicate that if the City wished to pursue upgraded rubberized railroad crossings. That may be a possibility, at the city’s expense, in cooperation with Norfolk Southern.

Motorists traveling farther east on U.S. Route 62 can turn south onto Meese Road NE. Continue south to Main Street (State Route 153) and then head west toward downtown Louisville.

However, Turowski emphasized that the City of Louisville does not own the railroad property, the tracks, or the crossing infrastructure. The land, tracks, and crossing surfaces are owned and maintained by Norfolk Southern and are governed by federal railroad regulations. Because of that ownership, the City cannot independently repair the railroad tracks or the asphalt located within the crossing areas.

These alternate routes may help reduce travel delays, although traffic conditions can vary depending on the location of the train and the duration of the railroad operation.

Stay Patient and Plan Ahead While the recent blockage caused understandable frustration for residents and commuters, Norfolk Southern has indicated that the unusual circumstances leading to the delays have been resolved and that similar operations are not expected under normal conditions.

Alternate Routes During Train Delays

When trains are blocking Louisville's main crossings, motorists may be able to avoid lengthy delays by using alternate routes, depending on their destination.

Nickelplate Avenue NE (Central Shortcut) Drivers traveling on U.S. Route 62 can turn south onto Nickelplate Avenue NE. This roadway runs between State Route 44 and State Route 153, providing access to Main Street while helping motorists bypass several of the blocked crossings.

Meese Road NE (East Side Bypass)

If motorists encounter blocked crossings in the future, planning ahead, allowing extra travel time, and utilizing alternate routes can help minimize delays. Drivers are also reminded to never drive around lowered crossing gates or attempt to cross between railcars, as doing so is extremely dangerous and illegal.

The City of Louisville will continue working with Norfolk Southern whenever concerns arise and encourages residents to report railroad crossing issues directly to the railroad at their customer service line at 1 (800) 635-5768 so they can be documented and addressed as appropriate.

Drama Daze of Summer Gives Young Performers a Chance to Shine in Louisville For two exciting weeks this summer, Louisville High School was filled with creativity, laughter, and plenty of theatrical magic as young performers took center stage during the annual Drama Daze of Summer program.

Students ages 8-14 signed up for an unforgettable theatrical experience that focused on character development, improvisation games, creativity, and confidence building, all leading up to performances of Finding Nemo: Kids!

The program was instructed and directed by Louisville High School Speech and Theatre Director Katy Russell, with the assistance of Louisville High School stage and theatre mentors who helped guide the young actors through every step of the production process. In addition to rehearsing for the musical, the program also offered theatre classes for the youngest participants, introducing them to the exciting world of performing arts.

When asked about the history and purpose of the program, Director Katy Russell shared that Drama Daze has been a Louisville tradition for many years.

"This program has been around for years. In fact, I was a part of Drama Daze back in my days. The Drama Daze program was designed to give kids the opportunity and the experience to be part of a theater production and experience what life in the theater is all about."

After approximately two weeks of rehearsals, the hard work paid off as students took the stage in two separate performances based on age groups.

Family members and friends were treated to entertaining productions that showcased the dedication, enthusiasm, and talent of each young performer. Both performances were outstanding and demonstrated just how much the students had learned in a short amount of time.

That tradition continues to inspire a new generation of young performers, giving them a safe and encouraging environment to develop not only their acting and stage skills but also teamwork, communication, and self-confidence.

By the final curtain, it was clear that Drama Daze of Summer had accomplished exactly what it set out to do. The students gained valuable experience, formed new friendships, and discovered the joy of live theatre, while audiences were treated to two fantastic performances of Finding Nemo: Kids!

Congratulations to Director Katy Russell, the Louisville High School theatre mentors, the volunteers, and all of the talented young performers for another successful Drama Daze of Summer. Their hard work and enthusiasm made this year's program a memorable experience for everyone involved.

2nd Fridays Finds an indoor Home as Louisville Community Refuses to Let Mother Nature Win What began as a weather concern quickly turned into an entirely different challenge, but thanks to determination, community partnerships, and plenty of hometown spirit, 2nd Fridays in Downtown Louisville still delivered a memorable evening.

The July edition of 2nd Fridays, along with the Louisville Farmers Market, was originally postponed because of the threat of severe weather. When the rescheduled date arrived, another obstacle emerged as the event was forced to cancel its outdoor activities due to the Increased Smoke Index Health Hazard caused by wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada. The poor air quality made it unsafe to hold the event outdoors.

Rather than letting another setback end one of Louisville's signature summer celebrations, the Louisville Main Street Committee and the Louisville Eagles came together with one goal in mind: the show must go on.

And that's exactly what happened.

The Louisville Eagles graciously opened the doors of their club, welcoming the community inside for an evening of music, great food, and fellowship. Their kitchen kept everyone wellfed while the bar served guests throughout the night, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that quickly filled with families, friends, and visitors from across the area.

2nd Fridays Finds an indoor Home as Louisville Community Refuses to Let Mother Nature Win (continued) Providing the evening's entertainment was Mind Over Matter, an outstanding Hall & Oates tribute band that took the Eagles' main stage and kept the crowd singing, dancing, and enjoying every minute. Despite the unexpected venue change, the energy inside the Eagles Club rivaled any outdoor festival, proving that the Louisville community knows how to come together regardless of the circumstances.

The evening served as a reminder that community is about more than a location.

Even when Mother Nature and environmental challenges attempted to put a damper on one of Louisville's biggest celebrations, volunteers, organizers, local businesses, musicians, and residents worked together to ensure the event remained a success.

The Main Street Committee and the Louisville Eagles deserve tremendous credit for their flexibility and commitment to making sure the community still had an opportunity to gather, celebrate, and enjoy a summer evening together.

Now, attention turns to the next 2nd Fridays in Downtown Louisville event in August.

Organizers are hopeful that Mother Nature will cooperate, allowing everyone to return outdoors to experience everything that makes 2nd Fridays such a special community tradition —great food, local vendors, shopping, and live entertainment.

If all goes according to plan, attendees will be rocking out on the Kempthorn Stage with Whiskey Loco, one of the region's premier modern country bands.

Here's hoping for blue skies, fresh air, and another unforgettable night in downtown Louisville. We'll see you in August!

Legacy of Honor's 3rd Annual Touch a Truck Event Draws Thousands to Metzger Park

Spotlight Media spoke with Ethan Rebuck, founder of Legacy of Honor, about how the event has grown over the years.

"The Touch a Truck Event was originally started to bring awareness of what Legacy of Honor is and does, but since then it has truly turned into an event of its own," Rebuck said. "In its third year, we welcomed thousands of people to Metzger Park with more than 50 trucks, vendors, food trucks, helicopters, and plenty to see and do. As visitors strolled through the park, smiles could be seen everywhere as kids climbed aboard massive trucks, sounded air horns, met first responders, and learned about the vehicles and equipment that serve communities every day. Despite a couple of brief downpours passing through the area, the weather couldn't dampen the enthusiasm as the crowds quickly returned to enjoy everything the event had to offer.

While the trucks and helicopters were certainly crowd favorites, the heart of the event remained Legacy of Honor's mission.

Every dollar raised through Legacy of Honor directly supports veterans, active military personnel, first responders, and their families.

Through programs such as Operation Random Acts of Kindness, Operation Bootstrap, Operation Christmas Blessings, and Operation Access, the organization has provided direct support and essential assistance to more than 364 military, veteran, and first responder families.

The meeting commenced with a prayer led by Luke, who asked for guidance and blessings for the community. Attendees then recited the Pledge of Allegiance and discussed the fourway test of truth, fairness, goodwill, and mutual benefit. Several members shared "happy dollars," expressing personal joys, such as family visits. A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to addressing community needs, including the search for a backup volunteer to assist with food distribution due to a recent loss of a key helper. The meeting also covered upcoming events, such as a third Friday gathering, a Rotary car show, and a fundraiser for polio.

Luke was introduced and shared his journey as a seminarian, emphasizing the importance of service and community. He spoke about the positive signs of young people returning to their faith.

New Business Brings Creativity, Community, and Comfort to Downtown Louisville Downtown Louisville is welcoming a unique new addition to its growing business community with the opening of Knitted & Known Studio, a cozy, faithrooted yarn studio located inside a side room at The Alley Cafe & Bakery on Main Street.

Owned by Kari Nelson, Knitted & Known Studio is much more than a place to purchase yarn. It is a welcoming space where creativity, friendship, and encouragement come together for knitters of every skill level—from complete beginners to experienced makers.

Before opening her storefront, Nelson spent years teaching knitting classes throughout Stark County while also building an encouraging online community.

When the opportunity to create a permanent home for her business came along, Alley Cafe & Bakery owner Amanda welcomed the idea, offering the studio space in the back of the café.

"I hope to someday have my own storefront," Nelson said. "But for now, I am incredibly grateful to be here and thankful that Amanda took a chance on me."

A mother of three with the support of her husband, Nelson taught herself how to knit in 2012 by watching YouTube tutorials. What started as a personal hobby quickly developed into a passion for helping others discover the joy of creating something with their own hands.

The dream of opening the studio became a reality thanks to the support of the local community.

Through a successful Kickstarter campaign launched this past April, friends, family, and community members helped bring Nelson's vision to life. Today, the names of those supporters are proudly displayed on a wall inside the studio as a daily reminder that this dream was built together.

"I did not get here alone," Nelson said. "Knitted & Known Studio exists to give people a cozy place to slow down, create something beautiful, and feel truly seen."

"I love helping beginners discover that they can make something with their own hands," Nelson said.

"Watching someone light up with confidence never gets old."

That passion is reflected throughout every corner of Knitted & Known Studio. The inviting space features comfortable seating, beautiful lighting, colorful yarn displays, and a peaceful atmosphere intentionally designed to help visitors relax and feel at home. Head Football Coach Jake Adkins is meticulously preparing the Louisville Leopard Football team for the upcoming 2026 season. To achieve this, he has organized a strategic three-day camp at the renowned University of Mount Union, which is celebrated for its excellence in nurturing both football skills and essential life skills. This prestigious university provides an ideal setting for such an immersive and comprehensive experience.

The camp is generously funded by the persistent efforts of the Louisville Touchdown Club, which tirelessly engages in various fundraising activities throughout the year to support the team. Thanks to this support, the camp offers a perfectly planned schedule for the players. During their stay, the team members reside in the university dorms, where they eat meals together, fostering camaraderie and unity. They engage in multiple daily practices to hone their skills and participate in team meetings and bonding activities designed to strengthen their teamwork and communication.

Our Sideline Cheer Program proudly continues one of Louisville’s longest-standing traditions. Just as generations before them have done, our cheerleaders represent their football teams as the Browns, Bears, Lions, Colts, Packers, Cowboys, Rams, and Chiefs. This tradition has been a part of Louisville youth football and cheer for many years, connecting today’s athletes with those who came before them while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

David Carl ZAHLER

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of David C. Zahler, who gained his angel wings on Friday, July 17, 2026, just two days before his 73rd birthday.

David was born on July 19, 1953, in Canton, Ohio. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, loyal friend, and a man whose larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

David was the definition of a hard worker.

Throughout his career, he dedicated many years to Republic Steel and later Yohe Supply, where his strong work ethic and dependability earned the respect of his coworkers. He was a true fixer—if something was broken, David could figure out how to make it work. He always had a story to tell, a joke to share, and a way of making everyone around him smile.

Anyone who knew David knew of his lifelong passion for cars, especially his beloved GTOs. Whether he was restoring them, racing them, or simply talking about them, they brought him immense joy. He also loved camping, spending time outdoors, and creating memories with those he loved most.

If you saw David, chances are you also saw his faithful golden retriever, Brady, by his side. The bond they shared was a testament to David's kind and loyal heart.

Above all else, David's greatest joy in life was his family. He leaves behind the love of his life and devoted wife of 44 years, Monica Zahler. He will be forever cherished by his children: David (Angie) Zahler, Renee (Todd) DeChiara and Stephen (Lauren) Zahler, He was a proud grandfather to Brock (Nate), Joey (Claudia), Andrea (Cody), Natalie (Cam), Ericah (Elijah), Ciara (Jimmy), Gracyn (Alex), Cody, Hunter and Morgan and an adoring great-grandfather to

Harlee, Walker, and Jaxson. He also leaves behind his sisters; Sue (Dave) Unsowrth and Sandra Bourquin; as well several beloved nieces and nephews.

David is proceeded in death by his parents Carl and Garnet Zahler as well as his friend and brother-inlaw Jim Bourquin.

David truly was one of a kind. He was the life of every party, the first to crack a joke, and someone who could brighten any room with his quick wit and infectious laughter. His generosity, humor, and unwavering love for his family will be remembered forever.

Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing that his legacy lives on through the countless memories he created, the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

Dad, thank you for being our rock, our protector, our biggest supporter, and our greatest storyteller. We will miss your laugh, your wisdom, your hugs, and the way you made every gathering a little brighter. Until we meet again, keep the engines running and know that you will forever be loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten.

Following the burial, please join the family for a Celebration of Life at the Foltz Center, 224 N. Wood St., East Canton, OH 44730. Dinner will be provided as we gather to honor David’s life, share memories, and celebrate the time we were blessed to have with him.
