KNEEBOARDS
WHAT TYPE OF KNEEBOARD DO I NEED?
�
Kneeboards have changed drastically over the last 15 years. Once used for charts and flight plan forms, kneeboards are now used to hold the most trusted navigational tool: an iPad, tablet, or phone. (A mere 15 years ago, Sporty’s best selling kneeboard still had a pencil sharpener on it!) While our chart-specific kneeboards are still available, most pilots have switched over to a kneeboard designed around holding an iPad or tablet.
Here are five things to consider when looking for a kneeboard
1.
What is the primary thing you are trying to hold? Many kneeboards are specific to the size iPad or tablet you are trying to hold. Be sure to get the right size kneeboard for your device. Take into consideration any case you might have on your iPad, as most pilots will not want to remove their iPad from a case every time they fly.
2.
Portrait or landscape? Some kneeboards only work in one orientation. If you like flying in landscape then flipping to portrait for approach plates, make sure your kneeboard can rotate easily.
3.
Room for extra stuff. Are you a gadget enthusiast? If you find yourself digging in your flight bag multiple times during a flight, consider getting a kneeboard with more pockets. There are lots of options that allow you to organize more than just your device.
4.
Less can sometimes be more. While room for extra gear is great when you need it, when you don’t, the extra flaps and pockets can really get in your way. If you are not the gadget enthusiast from #3, consider a simple kneeboard that only holds your device with a minimal footprint in your flight bag.
5.
This isn’t the last kneeboard you will buy. While you may think you found the “one kneeboard to rule them all,” your gadgets will eventually change. Look at what you were flying with 15 years ago: the perfect kneeboard then is probably not the perfect kneeboard now. Don’t get too focused on perfection.

SLIMLINE KNEEBOARDS FLIGHT GEAR SLIMLINE ROTATING KNEEBOADS The smallest, simplest solution for using an iPad in the cockpit. No bells and whistles, just a simple mounting surface holding an iPad. Elastic bands are movable to help avoid hitting buttons on your tablet. Integrated rotating mechanism allows for portrait and landscape orientation. Robust ledge provides a good book end for your device. Split design increases stability while keeping the power port accessible. Will work with most cases. Two sizes for maximum compatibility. Rotating The low profile rotating mechanism makes it fast and easy to go from portrait to landscape orientation on your iPad. There are no locks or latches to operate, so it’s a one-handed maneuver, but there is enough friction to keep your iPad in place once it’s rotated. Universal Design The top left and right corners feature adjustable elastic straps to hold the tablet in place. This design allows it to fit with most iPads with or without a case. It also allows you to move the strap so that it doesn’t interfere with buttons. You can even cinch it down more for those turbulent summer cross country flights.

WHAT PILOTS NEED TO KNOW
One of the standout features of the iPad is its long battery life—a fully charged battery should last you about 9 – 10 hours (more like 4 – 6 when using a wireless accessory and when the screen is on full bright). Even though most general aviation flights rarely last that long, it’s always a good idea to have backup power in flight. In fact, running out of battery power is about the only problem we’ve had in ten years of flying with the iPad. Charging with a cigarette lighter adapter You can use a 12-24V cigarette lighter charger in your airplane to charge your iPad, and this is often the most convenient and affordable option. We carry two of these pretty much every time we fly. Pay close attention before just buying any USB charger though, as you’ll want to make sure it provides at least 2.1 amps for optimum

charging. The Flight Gear model offers two USB ports, both rated at 3 amps, and works on both 12V and 24V electrical systems. It also has a built-in screen that displays battery voltage—a handy backup. Charging from a battery pack You can also charge the iPad when on the go with a portable backup battery. If you’ve double-checked that it’s the right charging plug (and cable), try cleaning out the Lightning port on your device. Sometimes dust or other debris can interrupt the connection. Also, try restarting your device.

4 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A FLASHLIGHT AND 4 THINGS TO AVOID
A pilot’s flashlight could be a real lifesaver in an emergency, but it also needs to be suited for daily use. Here’s what to look for:

Multi-color Preserving night vision is super important, so getting a flashlight with multiple colors is a plus. Further, make sure it has independent switches for the different colors of light. You don't want to scroll through blinding white light to get to the night vision-friendly red light.
