t’s baaaaaack! Our Annual Camps and Clinics Resource Guide turns 8 this year. It’s all grown up and we’re so proud of it. All kidding aside, this is something we’re proud to put out each year. We jam-packed the guide once again. Because CAMPS! They’re everywhere and seemingly for everyone. For the second straight year, we offer up 60 pages of recreation. Camp listings appear on 35 of those pages, and camp-related content appears across eight more. I say it every year in this space: If kids can’t find a camp or clinic that fits them with this guide, I seriously question their motivation. This year’s theme was: Greatest Hits. We wanted to take a lot of the various things we’ve liked from previous Camps & Clinics Guides — as well as some of the things readers have told us they’ve liked

CAMP LISTINGS

in the past — and combine them into the 2018 version. Thus we’ve dipped into some editorial from previous guides, including a step-by-step camp choosing guide for parents, tips for the high school athlete looking for a camp, and personal recollections of good camp experiences from a handful of successful high school athletes. We also added in something new this year: photo packages featuring some of the camps you can find in the listings. Sort of like shopping at Costco. See the sample, then go searching for it! And finally, I’d like to assure our faithful readers that we haven’t abandoned our usual high school coverage to produce this. In fact, March has been an extremely busy month for us. Be sure to check below this column to see all the coverage we’ve produced at SportStarsMag.com. Now I’m going to get out of the way and let the camps and clinic bonanza begin. Happy camping. ✪

finding the

RIGHT FIT

With three decades of experience running camps, National Academy of Athletics founder Aaron Locks offers parents nine steps for choosing the right camp for their kid

S

ummer camps should be an awesome experience for all children. The focus should be on fun, education and being active. This is my 32nd year involved in youth sports camps clinics and trainings and I’m excited to offer these tips. When selecting a summer sports camp, or any summer camp for that matter, it is very important that you do your homework. The following information will be very helpful to parents attempting to find the most engaging programs for the kids to participate in this summer. Many of these topics may seem to be common sense, but as a father of two active kids I know how important it is not to skip any of the steps. 1. TAKE TIME. Figure out your family needs. Is the camp or camps going to serve as day care, instruction or vacation fun? If the parents are working and the kids need a safe place to go, do the times and scheduled weeks fit the needs of your family? Find out the ages of the participants to make sure that the camp is age-appropriate for your child. Many of us parents feel our kids are capable of playing sports when they’re very young. Although that is true on some levels, putting your child in a camp that is not ageappropriate, can cause major challenges. 2. TALK WITH YOUR KIDS. Once you know what you are looking for, it’s a good idea to be sure it’s something your kids will enjoy. Find out what your child is interested in or what they may want to learn, it can truly help to get buy-in and keep their interest the entire week. Many of us parents like to expand our children’s horizons by offering them the opportunity to try something new. I am a big fan of doing this in the camp environment. That being said, I do believe that a one-day clinic is a much better place to start than a commitment to a five-day camp. 3. THE FAMILY BUDGET. It does no good to find out about expensive camps or extravagant adventures if your family budget will not be able to handle it. Figure out if going to one one-week camp for $600 for is better than going to three different camps at $200 per week. The old saying, “You get what you pay for,” does hold weight here. However, often times Parks and Recreation’s, YMCA’s and other nonprofits offer some pretty cool unit programs at very affordable rates. 4. GET SPECIFIC. Once you have decided the type of camp or camps to register your child for, it is time to sift through the lots of options out there for you to choose from. Not every sport-specific camp is the same. If it is a basketball camp, does it offer competition, instruction or just fun and games. Be sure to ask questions and do your research online to find out specifically what the camp offers. Let’s face it, most of our kids want to go to camp to have fun and compete where we parents might want them to

6

SportStars™

March 15, 2018

actually learn some sport-specific and life skills. 5. WHO’S RUNNING THINGS? It is very important to know who will be working with your child. Don’t be concerned with just the name attached to the camp, but who will be doing the coaching or teaching every day. Find out what the camper-to- coach ratio is. Most quality camps offer a maximum 10 to 1 camper to coach ratio. This allows for maximum teaching and supervision for safety. 6. HISTORY OF THE CAMP. There are many camp companies. Some have been around a short while and others have a longer history. If you are going to put a deposit down or pay for a camp that is two or three months away, be sure the company is reputable and find out their refund policies. You can check with Yelp or other online ratings. Another tip is to check if the camp has a Facebook page. See who is posting information and that will help to give you a better idea of the experiences others have had at the camp. 7. LOCATION. It’s important to make sure that the location of the camp is going to be offered has quality facilities as well as being nearby your home or office. Are the facilities in a good neighborhood? 8. GO TIME. Once you have registered for the camp, you should receive a confirmation which should include all of the equipment or things you will need to bring to camp.

Find out if they provide meals or if there are supplies you may need to purchase separately. This one is personal to me. I remember when I signed my son up for a basketball camp at a local college. On paper it looked like everything would be great. Unfortunately, when we got there, he didn’t get to play in the big gym featured in all of the brochure pictures. He played outdoors half of the time and in the school’s auxiliary gym the rest. Part of the experience my son wanted was the opportunity to play on that big beautiful gym floor. Luckily the staff did a good job, and by the end of the week he ended up having fun at camp. 9. THE DROP OFF. Be sure you feel comfortable when you drop your child off at the camp. Often times the child might be uncomfortable because they are new to the sport or activity, but as the parents, we should always use our gut for judging. Parents will often sit and watch the first 15-20 minutes to make sure things are organized, running smoothly and the child is having a good experience. Be sure to double-check that the camp has your cell phone number or any other emergency contacts. Also be sure that you have a number you can use to reach the camp if needed. Finally, confirm the time for pick-up. Whether you to go to one of the National Academy of Athletics camps or another, I truly hope your child has a safe, fun, educational experience. ✪

Hosting Your Event In Concord Means Getting Variety Of Support, Cash Incentives So you want to host a sporting event in the Bay Area. There’s a lot that goes into that obviously, especially cost and an immense amount of I-dotting and T-crossing. Visit Concord wants to help you with all of that. Working with Visit Concord, organizers can host their events in the heart of the East Bay while getting marketing assistance as well as the potential for cash incentives for help in funding their event. Here’s how organizers can go about getting that help. First, Concord wants to help those organizers find the facility or venue that works best for them. And they have several options. Among them are the various fields and parks run by the City of Concord, facilities at one of the six high school campuses within the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, Diablo Valley College, Diablo Creek Golf Course, SixFlags Waterworld or the new Ultimate Fieldhouse indoor courts facility. Visit Concord staff will personally inspect properties of interest with potential organizers in order to make sure it’s the proper fit for the event. After that, it’s a matter of bringing the people. Organizers want people to attend their events, and Concord wants those people to spend time in Concord — which starts with hotel booking assistance. Visit Concord will gather information about an organizer’s event and send it to all the Concord hotels so the organizer gets his or her price and amenity needs met. Visit Concord will

also offer to host a custom room reservation web page with ongoing support of it up through the event. There are also opportunities for sponsorships that can lead to cash and room rebates, and organizers can apply directly to Visit Concord for funding help. What are some of the amenities that make Concord so attractive? Well, for one, its location is smack dab in the heart of the East Bay. Its many hotels are located near tournament sites as well as restaurants, shopping, activities and much more — all of which offer competitive prices compared to several other Bay Area locations. Event goers can take advantage of Visit Concord’s personalized trip-building tool, a website resource that makes it quick and easy for them to plan their free time outside of the event schedule. Once organizers reach an agreement with Visit Concord, the staff members of Visit Concord will continue to provide support leading up to the event. That support includes marketing assistance that can be valued up to $4,000. That assistance includes database management, email campaigns and followup communications with coaches or other prospective event-goers, creative services for ad development and ongoing project management support. Seems pretty simple, right? So go ahead and follow in the footsteps of events like the West Coast Jamboree girls basketball tournament and Quick6 7-on-7 football. Strike a deal with Visit Concord and make it a win-win for all. ✪

SUMMER PLOTTING I want to improve my game this summer, so I definitely want to go to a camp — but there are a lot of choices, and I can’t afford to go to very many. How should I decide which one to pick? C.G., El Cerrito

T

here are a lot of variables involved in picking a camp, starting with whether your high school coach is running one. If so, you should definitely do that one — if only because high school coaches are brutally underpaid, and they pick up some extra income with these summer camps. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to be with your coach during the summer and get a jump start on the season, but on the other hand, playing for the same coach all the time will severely limit your development, as will playing with the same players. For example, a point guard with a goal of playing in college needs to develop her scoring, but if she plays on a high school team that has other scorers and the coach just wants her to distribute, she won’t round out her offensive game. And if she plays for that same coach in club basketball, she will never develop the scoring punch she needs to maximize her potential. And the same applies defensively: Some coaches only play zone, and playing zone year-round will not help a player become a good defender. So aside from going to your own coach’s camp, if there is one, find a camp that will help you get better — and here are some things to look for. 1) Day-long camps are basically day care. No one can play volleyball or soccer for eight

10

SportStars™

March 15, 2018

hours, or any other sport for that matter. If a camp runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., most of the day will be spent killing time. (Not only do the players get tired but so do the coaches.) 2) Find out the coach-player ratio. Usually, camps are broken up in groups (stations). If there are 15 kids in each group, and one coach, that’s not going to be nearly as effective as having seven kids and one coach. (Studies have actually shown that the maximum number of people even a strong leader can manage is around nine — more than that, and people get lost in the shuffle.) 3) Find out if the group coaches get paid. If the coaches are high school players who are working for their high school coach, it’s probably not going to be a great camp. The more adult club and high school coaches working directly with the campers, the better. The quality of instruction is crucial, and just because a high school boy is a really good player doesn’t mean he can really teach anyone about the game. 4) Don’t go to a college camp expecting to go to that college as a result. The head coach will generally wave to the campers on day one, and then the rest of the time, it’s a moneymaker for the assistants. The college players generally work the camp, and again, just because you’re a good player doesn’t mean you’re a good coach. And if you’re good enough to play for the college in question, they won’t care if you came to their camp; and if you’re not good enough, it won’t matter either. Of course, playing is better than not playing no matter what camp you choose. But since you’re spending someone’s hard-earned money to go, you want to get maximum value. A camp with high school or club coaches working with groups of 10 or less that runs no more than three hours a day is your best bet to get the most value — though supporting your own coach is a pretty good strategy too. ✪ Editor’s note: This Behind The Clipboard first ran in issue #114 of SportStars.

JOEY CAPRA Placer, Junior, Rising offensive line talent with at least six college offers, including Oregon State. Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite clinic is Linemen Win Games coached by Jon Osterhout, head coach at American River College Football. He teaches offensive and defensive linemen agility, blocking techniques and pass protection techniques. Several great players have gone to the camp including Eddie Vanderdoes of the Oakland Raiders, and my two brothers of course. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Not to be anxious. Have fun and enjoy every minute of it. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? A camp setting it completely different from normal practice because you’re learning alongside the guys you usually complete against. During that practice, we’re all in the same boat so we become allies instead of enemies. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps are well organized and have plenty of coaching staff so the athletes get personal attention and learn more. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I’d want my camp to have a diverse coaching staff. This gives the athletes many different looks, and the opportunity to learn from various programs. MATT LADRECH Campolindo-Moraga, Class of 2014, Starting pitcher for Cal Baseball What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Just to remember that you are constantly being evaluated. Even the small things, like hustling on and off the field, can go a long way in a coach’s eyes. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? To have the ability to control what you can control. There are a lot of different things in the sport of baseball that are completely out of your own personal control. Good or bad, it is always important to focus on controllable occurences, and not get caught up in negative outcomes that are out of your hands If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? Tips On How To Make Yourself More Recruitable he recruiting process can be an emotional rollercoaster for an unsigned/uncommitted senior volleyball athlete (and for juniors in the same situation). As the author of CollegeVolleyballCoach.com, I receive numerous emails from volleyball families who are a bit panicked because college coaches

are telling them they are done recruiting, or not responding at all. Families must remember that this is the most important time of the year for college volleyball coaches; the collegiate playing season. College coaches are trying to not get fired, to secure a raise, get a contract, or pushing for a great record so they have the opportunity to move up the job ranks, etc. While recruiting never ends, the coach’s focus is almost exclusively on the players in the gym and achieving the best possible season right now. As the collegiate playing season comes to a close, the collegiate recruiting season starts. College volleyball programs will have immediate roster spots and scholarship positions to fill for seniors and juniors. From NCAA Division I to junior colleges, injuries, academics, homesickness, playing-time issues or job changes can all create immediate roster spots and scholarship opportunities which may not have been available one month ago. The active collegiate recruiting season begins in late November, when the collegiate seasons come to a close. Make sure you are ready to be recruited. ›› Be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and have your NCAA ID number listed on all your recruiting literature/profile. ›› If you are a junior or a senior, have a current copy of your high school transcript and ACT/SAT test score ready to send to colleges. ›› Use the small window of time between the end of high school volleyball and the start of club volleyball to address any injuries or physical issues. Rest does not fix problems, it only masks them. ›› As a senior, you need to be at the top of your game early in the club season. College coaches are looking to make immediate recruiting decisions on seniors, so you don’t have time to play your way into shape. ›› Use practice to improve your weaknesses, but always play to your strengths in early tournaments: Show your best skills to watching college coaches. ›› Re-examine your list of outreach schools. If you have been contacting a certain level of program and no school is getting back to you, then it is time to adjust. Responses or lack of responses from a grouping of schools, provides valuable feedback. ›› Create a five-minute highlight or skills video of your most recent court time to have available for collegiate coaches. Don’t show clips/repetitions from September of your high school season, as it will be too old. Film the last matches of high school, or better yet, film the first few club volleyball practices. ›› Stay active in your outreach to colleges and communication. Roster openings will be occurring all through the holidays. Even though you may have already written a school, college coaches don’t go back through all of their emails when they have an opening, they respond to the next incoming email. There is still time on the recruiting clock for seniors (and definitely juniors), but no more time to let slip by. Use these next couple of weeks to prepare for the opening of the collegiate recruiting season. ✪ — Matt Sonnichsen for NCVA

SHEA MORENO Sheldon-Sacramento, Senior, UCLA-bound infielder What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Not be so shy and to ask more questions. When I was younger I used to be shy and nervous to talk in front of somewhat big crowds and to ask questions. I feel like if I asked just a few more question I could’ve gotten more out of the camps that I went to What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? (In a camp), being around collegiate athletes and some of the best coaches in the game made me want to perform better and show off a bit. Rather than in a practice setting where i’m more relaxed and focused on getting the kinks out. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? That in order to be the best you have to practice and have the mindset like the best. You have to mentally prepare yourself for every condition, situation and possibility. I learned this from Lisa Fernandez. She taught me that you never want to walk away from a situation or scenario knowing that you could have done better and that you could’ve done something to prepare yourself better. is designed to provide the middle school students (incoming 6h -8th grade) with a solid foundation for developing strength, speed and power. DONNY FONTILLAS Ripon, Senior, 2018 CIF State Wrestling Qualifier (132 Pounds) What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would tell my younger self to enjoy every moment and enjoy the process because you will remember this as a time of improvement, but also an experience to remember. There’s just something about grinding with your brothers that makes you connect more and become closer. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? In a camp setting, I was able to work on technical work. Positioning my body in the right angles so that I can use my max strength when wrestling and have the advantage over my opponent. In a practice setting, we work more on repetition and drilling so that moves can just flow in a match without a single thought. Both have made me into the wrestler I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful. What did the best camps you attended have in common? Every camp I have gone to has focused on you getting better whether it’s as a person or a wrestler. Every aspect of yourself can improve and that’s what my instructors really emphasized. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? That there are people that work just as hard as you, and in those camps you guys are working together. But when you get back, you realize you still have a lot of work to do. That’s what pushes you to keep working hard. Dynamite Sports Specific Speed Clinics Want to learn the secrets to developing quicker, faster, more agile and explosive court and field sports athletes?
