Welcome to Sacramento and the celebration of our 25th Anniversary! Only a very few have attended each annual meeting, and as such a person I can assure you everything looks, feels and is very different!

An obvious difference is our growth to more than 800 member organizations that represent almost 3000 individuals. Another is a program crammed full of the latest and best of industry best practices. We also have more event organizations and representatives than ever before. This has translated into more member appointments in the marketplace…a real focus of our efforts during the past year.

It is fitting that the NASC Hall of Fame would induct its first class in conjunction with the celebration of our 25th year. Plans for the Hall of Fame have been several years in the making. It was important, we thought, to connect the present with the past in a meaningful way. Perhaps some of you will consider a career in sport tourism as you realize some of the accomplishments of those who have gone before.

The Hall of Fame nominating and judging process is managed independently by the NASC Leadership Council. This group is made up of past chairpersons. They have become our own version of the Baseball Writers Association! Six individuals have been selected in this first year.

Planning for this year’s event began with your comments and suggestions following Grand Rapids. Each committee has worked with staff to insure delivery of the best content found anywhere in our industry. The topics covered and the presenters are truly the “best of the best!” We know you will leave inspired and assured of your next steps.

This year is a very special one for me. It has been my honor to represent you for the past twenty-three years as your only chief executive. I have been grateful for the opportunity to assist in the growth in numbers and influence of the only member association in sport tourism. It has been my pleasure to work with every chairperson in our history, and to follow the growth and development of our committee structure.

inaugural hall of fame class The mission of the NASC Hall of Fame is to promote the professional management of sporting events and the sport tourism industry as a whole by honoring those individuals who exemplified the values of the NASC in their careers and by acknowledging their legacies to provide guidance for future members of the NASC. Those to be inducted into the Hall of Fame include, in alphabetical order:

Hill Carrow Carrow is a founder of NASC and the North Carolina Sports Association as well as the founder of North Carolina Amateur Sports and its first executive director. He served as chair for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 2011 and 2015, US. Olympic Trials in Table Tennis in 2012 and 2016 and is a founder and CEO of USA Masters Games.

Kevin Gray Gray also was a founding member of NASC and was the first paid associate of the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation. Over the 22 years leading the KC Sports Commission until he died in 2011 of cancer, the KC Sports Commission grew from one full-time employee to 10 and now includes 14 employees.

Since 1990, the KC Sports Commission has helped generate in excess of $700 million in estimated economic impact. He also was instrumental in helping secure the Kansas Speedway in 2000. ​​

Jack Hughes, CSEE For 29 years, Hughes was the owner of Event Service and Organization Professionals (ESOP) and was a sports, festival, convention, and tourism consultant for cities and sports commissions throughout the United States. His notable contributions were transferring the U.S. and North American Hot Air Balloon Championships to Baton Rouge; coordinating the U.S. Olympic Festival Torch Run relays in Louisiana, Texas, and North Carolina; and the World University Games Torch Run in New York. He was also the venue director for Archery and Cycling at the U.S. Paralympic games in Atlanta, GA, and Executive Director with the Gainesville Sports Commission.​​

Diane McGraw Diane was the executive director of the Philadelphia Sports Congress and also was the first full-time president of the Orlando Area Sports Commission, known today as the Central Florida Sports Commission. She was the first-ever President of the LA Sports and Entertainment Commission, and later went on to lead the Greater Louisville Sports Commission. Subsequently, she moved up to the state level and was the executive director of tourism and film for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Diane was a founding member of the NASC and the first female chair. She presently is an active member of the NASC Leadership Council. Diane McGraw is the President of McGraw Productions, with offices in Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

Tim Schneider He became the first publisher to establish a magazine dedicated to the sports-event industry when he launched SportsTravel magazine in 1997. He also created the TEAMS Conference & Expo, which has established itself as one of the leading business development opportunities in the sports-event industry. He has served two terms on the board of directors for the NASC in its early years. He has also served a variety of roles in the travel industry, including past chairman of the Destination & Travel Foundation and board member for both DMAI and the U.S. Travel Association.

Don Schumacher, CSEE Schumacher is the only executive director the NASC has had. He was one of the group’s co-founders and has grown the association to nearly 800 member organizations. Before the NASC, he was president of Riverfront Coliseum (now U.S. Bank Arena) and successfully hosted the World Figure Skating Championships and the men’s NCAA Midwest Regional Finals. He also served as head of the Greater Cincinnati Sports & Events Commission, attracting the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, NCAA women’s basketball Final Four, the Frozen Four NCAA hockey championship, women’s gymnastics and major skating events.

call for volunteers I am excited to invite all members of the NASC to volunteer on committees. This is YOUR association, so I strongly encourage you to consider getting involved in one of these rewarding opportunities.

If you have never volunteered before, you will find that this is a great way to give back to your association and build close relationships with peers in the industry. Your talents, passion, leadership and input are crucial to the NASC and it helps us to build effective, vibrant, inclusive, and multicultural committees.

The NASC is driven by more than 100 committed members who volunteer their time and resources for the good of the organization. Participating on a committee allows you to contribute to the decision-making that positions the NASC as the most valuable resource available to sport tourism professionals.

Here is how you can get involved: • Refer industry colleagues to join the NASC and attend the Symposium • Recommend educational content and programming and develop CSEE courses • Enhance mentoring activities for new members and first time Symposium attendees • Serve on judging panels for the annual member awards • Fundraise for the NASC Sports Legacy Fund

Awards Committee The Awards Committee is responsible for developing award categories and criteria for the annual NASC Member Awards. The committee also serves as judges for the various categories.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee oversees membership retention and recruitment. The committee contacts inactive and cancelled members on behalf of the association to encourage them to renew. The committee also evaluates membership benefits and resources on an annual basis.

Mentoring Committee The Mentoring Committee cultivates relationships with new members to help guide them through their first year of membership. The committee is also responsible for planning and hosting first time attendee activities at the annual Symposium.

Pre-requisites: Committee members must have a minimum of five years of industry experience and be actively involved in the NASC.

Professional Education Committee The Professional Education Committee assists with the development and implementation annual educational programming including CSEE, Symposium education sessions, and best practices webinars. Committee members are required to join and fully participate in monthly committee calls and continually evaluate the NASC’s educational offerings. Pre-requisites: Must be enrolled in the CSEE Program and must have taken at least three CSEE courses, two live and one online.

Sports Legacy Committee The Sports Legacy Committee manages the Sports Legacy Fund. The committee establishes the criteria and eligibility requirements for beneficiaries of the fund and selects the beneficiary each year. The committee also coordinates all aspects of the annual fundraiser, including promotion, solicitation of donation items, and ticket sales, as well as equipment donations. Additionally, the committee coordinates community service projects for members at the Symposium and Best Practices Meetings.

Symposium Committee The Symposium Committee assists in the planning and execution of the annual NASC Sports Event Symposium. Committee members are required to join and fully participate in monthly committee calls, make recommendations about scheduling and hospitality functions, recruit event owners and promote the Symposium through word of mouth marketing to industry peers and colleagues.

speakers Terra Alphonso, MBA, CMP Branson Chamber and CVB A native of Missouri, Terra Alphonso studied at Missouri State University (MSU) where she completed her Bachelor’s in Marketing Management followed by a Master’s in Business Administration only 18 months later. While pursuing her degrees she promoted the MSU Women’s’ Soccer team. Working in the hospitality industry for over 15 years, she worked with a team of five to promote and manage a four-day music festival featuring 18-22 artists each year including the Charlie Daniels Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Following this experience, she spent five years at one of the most breathtaking resorts in the country, Big Cedar Lodge. The past six years Terra has been a member of the Branson Chamber of Commerce/CVB staff and the NASC. During this time she has severed on several committees and built relationships with Sports Events organizers and rights holders around the country and worked with many to host everything from the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon to Bassmaster Elite fishing tournaments to USSSA and NAIA championships.

Don Anderson Destination Consultancy Group Don Anderson is the Executive Partner of Destination Consultancy Group, a respected destination marketing and management consulting company with a track record of advising over 250 DMOs/CVBs and Sports Commissions in their market research, strategic and annual marketing, development and advocacy planning, brand strategy formulations and governance models. Don is the founder and director of the Destination Marketing Association International’s 25 year old Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) Program. He has worked closely with the NASC over the past four years on their overall integrated education strategy and CSEE program redevelopment.

Demp Bradford Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission Demp Bradford has worked in the sports tourism business for over 18 years.

Demp became the Executive Director of the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission in July of 2016 where he also serves as the head of the Local Organizing Committee for the Southern Conference Basketball Championships.

In October of 2016, Bradford successfully pulled together a diverse community coalition to keep the SoCon Championships in Asheville despite the exit of most college events from the state. Prior to his move to Asheville, Bradford served as the Director of Events for the Tournament Host Committee of Greensboro and the Vice President of the Greensboro Sports Commission where he worked with several NCAA and ACC Championships along with two US Figure Skating Championships.

Jason Clement The Sports Facilities Advisory/The Sports Facilities Management Prior to his role as CEO of SFM, Jason served for nearly 10 years as the Chief Operating Officer for SFA and SFM from infancy to enterprise level firms. As CEO of SFM, Jason leads the strategic direction, culture, and service standards that define SFM in public and private sector markets.

Tom Cove Sports & Fitness Industry Association Mr. Cove represents the interests of the nation’s sporting goods manufacturers by directing SFIA’s overall strategy and positioning among legislative, industry, and media influences. SFIA’s membership consists of more than 500 leading manufacturers and distributors of athletic equipment, footwear, and apparel.

Tim’s leadership was instrumental in the construction of state-of-the-art facilities such as a water park, a conservatory, golf club, ice arena, adventure park, and indoor/outdoor sports facilities totaling over $100M. He has earned prestigious honors such as Lifetime Achievement Awards and Professional of the Year Award from Eastern Illinois University, Illinois Association of Park Districts, and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association.

Lisa Diven Kansas City Sports Commission Lisa Diven is the Director of the Women’s Intersport Network for Kansas City (WIN for KC) and Community Impact for the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation. Ms. Diven oversees local events that include free youth sports clinics, a kids marathon, an all-girls sports camp, and an all-women’s triathlon.

Ron Eifert, CSEE Dayton/Montgomery County CVB Ron has been in the hospitality business since 1989 when he started with Hilton and then joined the staff at the Dayton/Montgomery County CVB in February 1993. Ron has had the opportunity to work most of the market segments for the Bureau and has focused on sports since the late 90’s.

John Gibbons Rhode Island Sports Commission John Gibbons, CSEE is the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Sports Commission. His clients include USA Gymnastics, USA Figure Skating, American Contract Bridge League and the NCAA. He has over 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry. He is a graduate of the University of New Haven.

speakers David Gilbert Greater Cleveland Sports Commission David Gilbert serves as President & CEO of three non-profit organizations in Cleveland, Ohio, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, Destination Cleveland; and the Cleveland 2016 Host Committee for the Republican National Convention. Since 2000, the Sports Commission has had significant success by attracting and creating more than 160 events to the region. These events have contributed more than $460 million in local economic impact. Gilbert serves as vice president on the board of the International Children’s Games, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, and sits on numerous local boards.

Tara Green Klyde Warren Park As president of Klyde Warren Park, Tara Green is responsible for keeping Dallas’ most active greenspace a pristine, safe environment for the 1 million guests who visit each year. Prior to joining the Park, Tara spent her career in the sports industry working for the American Airlines Center, North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee and the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau Sports Marketing department. She recently served as the first chairperson of the Dallas Sports Commission and also served on the board of the VisitDallas. She is also a past chairwoman for the National Association of Sports Commission and has earned her Certified Sports Event Executive (CSEE) designation.

John Groh Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau John Groh, CDME, has been president/CEO of the Rockford (IL) Area CVB since 2009. John is responsible for growing the region’s economy by overseeing the marketing of Illinois’ second largest metro region. Working alongside local partners, John co-lead an effort to retain, regain and grow the impacts of sports tourism by developing and implementing a $60 million master sports infrastructure facility plan, dubbed Reclaiming First. Within the industry, he serves on the executive boards of the Destination & Travel Foundation and the Illinois Council of Convention & Visitors Bureaus.

Linda Logan Greater Columbus Sports Commission Linda Shetina Logan has been executive director of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission since 2002. She is a graduate of Ohio University, a past advisory board member of the Sports Administration and Facility Management Program and past national chair of the board of the National Association of Sports Commissions.

Diane McGraw McGraw Productions Diane was a founding member and first female Chair of the NASC. Since 1988, she served as Executive Director of the Philadelphia Sports Congress, President of the Orlando Sports Commission, LA Sports & Entertainment Commission, Louisville Sports Commission and State Tourism Director and Film Commissioner for the Commonwealth of PA. Diane began her career at the Screen Actors Guild and has had an impressive career spanning both the sports and entertainment industries.

Her board appointments included the USA Field Hockey, Southern CA US Olympic Committee, Women’s Sports Foundation Advisory Board and was recently named an Ambassador for the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. Diane is currently President of McGraw Productions, with offices in Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

Tammy Reynolds Ohio University Tammy Reynolds joined Ohio University in August 2012 after 25 years working in Fortune 500 companies. She began her career at Marathon Oil Company, and most recently worked for Whirlpool Corporation at the company’s world headquarters where she led the human resources organization for the North American Operations organization. In this large-scale human resource leadership role, Tammy had accountability for human capital strategy, talent pipeline development, HR operational infrastructure and business continuity for all Whirlpool Corporation North America based manufacturing, supply chain and logistic locations. Tammy holds a Bachelor of Science from West Liberty State University and a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from West Virginia University. Tammy teaches integrated business cluster courses, human resources and organizational behavior for the MBA program, special leadership seminars in the Brazilian executive program and other external executive education seminars. Christine Simmons USA Fencing Christine has more than 15 years of experience in sport and management including: RFP development, event planning, contract negotiation, program development and staff management. She currently provides operations oversight at USA Fencing for national events, international events, membership and regions and divisions. She also serves as a liaison to the USA Fencing Board of Directors and various committees as well as Sports Commissions, CVBs, NASC, U.S. Sports Congress and Connect Sports. In addition to operations, she has served as the national events director, director of membership, associate executive director, and interim executive director during her tenure at USA Fencing. She has a total of 12 years serving with the sport of fencing (2002 – 2011 & 2013 – present).

Kris Smith Detroit Sports As the Director of the Detroit Sports Commission, Kris oversees the sales and operations of the DSC and is responsible for furthering its mission of marketing and selling metro Detroit as a premier destination for regional, national and international amateur sporting events. Before joining the DSC, Kris worked in sports for the Hampton Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Kevin Smith On Point Sports Strategies Kevin is the Managing Director of OnPoint Sports Strategies LLC in St. Petersburg Florida. He spent 17 years as the Director of the St. Petersburg Clearwater Sports Commission. Kevin served on the National Association of Sports Commissions’ Board of Directors for 9 years, and in 2014 held the position as Chairman of the Board. Kevin has also been on the Outback Bowl committee in Tampa for 28 years. In 2014, he was elected by the board of directors to hold the post as Chairman for the 2015 game. Kevin and his St. Pete Clearwater Sports Commission colleagues founded the NASC’s Sports Legacy Program. This national program provides donated sports equipment and financial support in NASC host communities and has provided more than $100,000 in equipment and funding since 2004.

speakers Suzann Stewart Family Safe Center of Tulsa Suzann M. Stewart has served as Executive Director of the Family Safety Center (FSC). Stewart came to the FSC after 30 years in the business community in executive leadership positions as Executive Director of the Tulsa CVB and founding President of the Tulsa Sports Commission. Stewart served as Chair of the National Association of Sports Commissions in 2000-2002. She is currently directing the expansion of the program with additional partners and enhanced survivor services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, elder and vulnerable adult abuse and stalking.

Madison Turrentine Greenville County (SC) Parks, Recreation & Tourism Madison Turrentine is a 2016 graduate of Clemson (National Championship) University. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management and also support from numerous internships throughout her college career, she now holds the Sports Tourism Coordinator position with Greenville County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism.

Elizabeth Young National Association of Sports Commissions Elizabeth Chaney Young joined the NASC staff in 2007 and currently serves as the Director of Membership and Marketing. She is the NASC’s chief storyteller and responsible membership recruitment, retention, and services. Through a combination of creative strategic planning and a strong emphasis service, membership has doubled from 400 to 800 member organizations during her tenure. Prior to joining the NASC staff, Elizabeth was an account executive for Pacers Sports and Entertainment and a marketing associate for The Ohio State University Department of Athletics.

She is a member of AMA, ASAE, and AFP and a proud alum of The Ohio State University, with a BSBA in Marketing and a Masters in Sport & Exercise Management.
