This Annual Report showcases how we are together growing the Richmond region’s active living movement. Over the past year, Sports Backers created an array of new programs and events thanks to the support of thousands of volunteers, partners, participants, and donors. We look forward to seeing these initiatives inspire even more people to enjoy their active living journey by crossing a finish line, participating in a fitness class, and running, walking, or riding our region's growing active transportation network.”

Roy Grier Board Chair

YOUR IMPACT Inspiring active living can't be done alone. Through partnerships with individuals and organizations we are able to create more impact, get more people moving, and build a vibrant community together.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROUP FITNESS › The Active Living Leadership Stars program kicked off its inaugural class with 20 outstanding student athletes taking part! These high school seniors will explore ways to contribute to the active living movement in our region through educational sessions, mentorships, volunteer opportunities, and a capstone project. Looking Ahead: Upon graduation of the 10 month program, these seniors will earn a minimum of a $2,500 scholarship.

2,700 Youth inspired to move more! Kids from across the region benefitted from the financial support, complimentary event entries and running shoes, or equipment loans given to 59 schools by Kids Run RVA

41 weekly fitness classes led by Fitness Warriors, certified fitness instructors, throughout the Richmond Region

› Our Fitness Warriors Program was awarded generous financial support from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust and The Windsor Foundation Trust, enabling us to compensate our Fitness Warriors for the classes they lead in the community. This change marks a pivotal moment in the program’s history— it demonstrates our commitment to valuing the contributions of our Fitness Warriors and also ensures the sustainability and growth of the program. Looking Ahead: 80 free weekly fitness classes will be offered by July 2024. › Sports Backers' Kids Run RVA program piloted fitness clubs at select area schools during the 2022-23 school year. After receiving great feedback from all involved, the program will move forward in offering an array of Run Clubs and Fitness Clubs throughout central Virginia. ADVOCATING FOR ACTIVE LIVING INFRASTRUCTURE › Plans for the Fall Line trail continue moving toward Sports Backers' goal of creating a world class trail connecting our community through 43 miles. A total of $252 million in funding has been secured for the trail’s construction through a variety of transportation grants. Sports Backers launched a vision plan project, thanks to a grant from the Red Gates Foundation, and has hired world renown experts from the Toole Design Group to lead the effort to enhance the trail experience with artwork, trailheads, enhanced gardens, play equipment, water fountains, benches, landscaping and other placemaking amenities.

REMEMBERING SCOTT SCHRICKER 1967-2022

Scott was a beloved Sports Backers employee and a loyal one at that—he joined Sports Backers in 1993, served in a variety of roles, and was an integral part of our growth and impact. Scott's steadfast belief in our mission to inspire active living led him to 29 years of dedicated service. We are honored and humbled that in his passing Scott requested donations be made to Sports Backers to further his impact on the organization. As a result of the generous funds raised in his honor, we raised over $22,000 for the Scott Schricker Memorial Scholarship. We are moved by his enduring belief in our work and eternally grateful for his continued support of the mission.

Sports Backers is a 501(c)(3) Charitable Nonprofit Organization
