Dear Readers,

Hello Spring! We are ready for you and all the magic you bring to this world! New growth, fresh blossoms, births and mother nature at its finest, showing us that no matter how long you have to hibernate and endure the dormancy of winter, we all reemerge stronger, rested and ready for whatever comes our way! Spring Break and Summer Camp registrations are happening now! It’s the perfect opportunity to encourage your children to try new things, hone new skills and challenge themselves in different ways. You never know what hidden talent or passion will present itself in your children unless they have the opportunity to explore and try new things. It’s also the perfect time of year to challenge yourselves with new things…golf, pickle ball, volunteering, coaching, workout groups, or continuing education to take care of your own mental, physical and emotional needs. Parents often spend so much time, money and energy on those they care for that they forget about themselves. At first glance, you may see our directory only as a resource for youth sports, but we are so much more…flip through our pages and watch your interests peak with new discoveries, programs and possibilities! Whether it’s a new sport, activity or club, children who are involved have proven to have a better success rate in school than those who don’t participate. Overall, students’ GPAs, test scores, attendance and graduation rates, and college acceptances are so much greater when they are engaged in their school and extracurricular activities. Take some time with your children and consider the many options in our directory for involvement in the community, schools, sports, activities and camps. It’s a win-win for everyone. As you may know, we can’t do what we do without our advertisers and our readers. Our advertisers fuel our company and the readers’ support of our advertisers fuel those businesses. Please mention Sports & Activities Directory when you call or visit our advertisers, that’s the only way they know we are working for them! Thank you all for your support through these trying times, we are working hard to keep this valuable publication in your hands! Enjoy the multitude of events happening around town during this beautiful time of year. Check out the Egg Hunts, concerts, rodeos, plays, dances, and more in our event listings covering February - April for opportunities to create some beautiful memories with your family, friends and neighbors. My best to you,

Margot

Dear Readers,

8

This year has some very exciting new events and programs, as well as favorites that are coming back for our residents and businesses to enjoy. We have also made a few city changes with our recycling and trash services (which you can get info on via our website at www.ppines.com) and our utility billing service (visit www.ppines.com/newutilitybill) to enhance customer experience and ensure more efficiency and effectiveness for our residents. With any transition, there are hiccups and questions, and I thank you all for your patience as these changes launched. I especially encourage everyone to participate in the billing system’s new Citizen Self-Service (CSS) portal where customers can sign up for easy and convenient access to their utility account information 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. This portal will give customers the ability to review their monthly consumption, billing, financial history, pay utility bill(s) online, sign up for auto-pay, print bills, and much more. Please be sure to visit the city’s YouTube channel at Pembroke Pines Media for several tutorial videos should you have any questions. I’m happy to announce that Pembroke Pines has once again, for the 29th consecutive year, been named 2021 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. This is a national recognition for the city’s commitment to effective urban forest management. Our Kindness Initiate event is now back. On February 5, 2022, please join the City of Pembroke Pines and Broward County School at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way, for an afternoon of sharing kindness. There will be performances on stage, poetry, storytelling, yoga and peaceful activities. For more information, please call the Special Events Office at 954-392-2116. And our very popular Taste of Pines will take place on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. This event sells out quickly, so please get your tickets in advance to ensure you are part of the festivities. Participants have an opportunity to sample the best of the best cuisine from our local restaurants, wines and enjoy live musical entertainment. The annual Taste of Pines benefits the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. For more info, please call 954-392-2116. We will also be holding the Mayor Frank C. Ortis Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament which will benefit the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. It will be held on March 18, 2022 at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club, located at 10500 Taft Street. To ensure your place and to get more information, please email Carol Campisi at ccampisi@ppines.com. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-435-6505, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

Your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

Silver Trail Middle School’s Percussion Club Written by: Christina Mankowski & Michael Lao

S

ilver Trail Middle School is proud to present the Silver Striikers Percussion Club directed by STMS Club Sponsor Christina Mankowski and West Broward’s Percussion Director Michael Lao. The mission of the Silver Striikers is to create, provide, and expand life experiences through music. In collaboration with West Broward High School, the Silver Striikers meet after school, twice a month. No matter their musical experience, all students are welcome in our club! We had several reasons for starting the Silver Striikers. First, we wanted to build a strong connection between the middle school band and high school band programs. While participating in this club, students have several opportunities to interact with West Broward Performance Ensemble’s staff and students. We believe this interaction will create a bridge that allows our students an easier transition from Silver Trail Middle to West Broward High School. Furthermore, we wanted to create an opportunity to enhance the musical abilities of our current percussionists; we wanted to allow players of other instruments to try new instruments; and we felt it was important to encourage anyone interested in picking up an instrument for the first time.

We also believe that music is a great tool for developing many life skills such as teamwork, communication, and general cognitive awareness. Drumming has an amazing influence on student’s social emotional well-being. According to the Chinook School of Music, “Drumming has a positive effect on anxiety, grief, fatigue, depression, and behavioral issues. While drumming, children strengthen their ability to focus, to work on impulse control, and decision-making skills. Playing the drums can help people express themselves and get in touch with their emotional state. Drumming helps us to connect to our core, enhances our sense of empowerment, and stimulates our creative expression.” We could not agree more. For the first several meetings, we have focused on the beginning basics of playing a percussion instrument. We started with the cup game, moved on to bucket drumming, and plan to begin instrumentation in January. We plan to showcase our club at Mustang Adventure on January 20th and will be performing at Silver Trail’s Endof-Year Spring concert. Want to keep up with us? Mr. Steve Frazier is the school’s principal.

and recover any learning loss that may have happened through the pandemic with the home-schooling requirements, as well as feed their developing independence skills. “We want to draw on the student’s strengths acquired during the time at home as well. We are encouraging independent learning along with in-person learning,” said Shearer. Three days a week before school, SPE has i-Ready Camp for 3rd – 5th Graders run by her Assistant Principal. The camp provides academic support. From December - April SPE will also have an after-school camp to focus on supporting students’ reading and math skills. Equally as important, Shearer has been highly effective at re-engaging the parents and the community with the school. SPE hosted a 5th grade Drive-In movie night which brought out over 100 parents with their children. They have had a Fall Festival Parade, Music Concerts, a Thanksgiving Feast, Polar Express and Reading Under the Stars Night (with flashlights). “She [Shearer] makes learning and leading fun! In a world that has been rocked with challenges and changes, she is a constant source of courage, caring, and kindness! We love and appreciate her immensely!” added Schreidell. Kindness is the theme at SPE. Shearer and her staff have created a positive learning environment where everyone feels welcome and safe at school. Students are recognized with “kindness tickets” for random acts of kindness performed throughout the school day. Every beautifully decorated hallway and door reinforces the kindness message. There are students appointed as Kindness Ambassadors whose responsibilities include welcoming and introducing new students to their school, helping them assimilate and make friends quickly in their new environment. To spreading kindness outside of SPE, students hold fundraisers to help support the Harvest Drive (collecting food for the families in need), book drives for other schools in need, and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. They also make time to bring cheer to our elderly with visits to nursing homes. “It’s our job to help students become a complete person, not only through teaching the core curriculum, but also by encouraging respect and kindness, and giving them the motivation to expect that of themselves and others,” Shearer stated. As Principal Shearer’s own children are well on their way to flying from the home nest, she consistently has new children landing in the SPE nest, and she loves it! Walking the halls with her, going in and out of classrooms, she knows most of her 500+ students by name and they beam when they are recognized by her. “Mrs. Shearer is the best,” said Amelia, age 7. Shearer is very proud of her beautiful school adorned with murals of dolphin (the SPE mascot) and sea life, her devoted and hardworking administration, dedicated and effective teachers and enthusiastic and involved parents and PTA. “The community is incredibly supportive as well, from the Mayor to School Board Commissioners, and from our local Police to Fire Department, I love Pembroke Pines,” exclaimed Shearer. It is apparent that Mrs. Shearer’s kindness and appreciation is reciprocated. SPE’s PTA President Grace Bonnelly said, “When Mrs. Shearer’s friendly face isn’t at the car line greeting students, she is working hard behind the scenes advocating for our children, teachers and staff. Mrs. Shearer wears numerous hats, often interacting with students, meeting with parents, communicating with the school district and community organizations ensuring that the school remains a safe place to grow and learn. Our awesome principal makes it a point to attend our PTA meetings and even joins us for family nights at local restaurants once a month. We are lucky to have her leading the way! She has created and cultivated a culture of kindness.” When Mrs. Shearer has time off, she enjoys her family here and visits her sisters in Oregon. She loves the beach and enjoys her downtime to recharge. Silver Palms Elementary requires a tremendous amount time and energy to uphold its consistent A/B school grade from the Florida Department of Education, but she says it fills her heart to see her students excel academically and socially! Silver Palms Elementary is located at 1209 NW 155th Avenue in Pembroke Pines. They can be reached at (754) 323-7450.

ucked away in the Pembroke Pines neighborhood of TownGate, is a gem of an elementary school run by an extraordinary Principal. Irina Shearer has been Principal of Silver Palms Elementary (SPE) for seven years and has created a positive, welcoming and productive learning environment through her leadership. Parents, teachers, administrators, students and community leaders rave about Principal Shearer. When you meet her, tour the school and see firsthand how much she loves what she does, you can’t help but rave about her, too! With Ecuadorian and Russian ancestry, Shearer was born and raised in Broward County and went to Plantation High School, thoroughly enjoying the diversity of the area. She always knew she wanted to work with children and be impactful in their lives. Sportsmanship, fortitude and work ethic throughout her primary school years earned Shearer a swimming scholarship to University of Massachusetts Amherst. She competed for 4 years while getting her degree in Education, then came right back to our area to teach 4th grade at Oriole Elementary. She even coached swimming during this period. Shearer loved teaching in the classroom and connecting with her students to develop their potential. She was fortunate enough to have a strong mentor during the early part of her career who recognized her leadership and strengths, guiding her gradually into administration. “I knew I could make a larger impact on children’s education through administration, and I dove in,” said Shearer (no pun intended). Shearer went on to become the Assistant Principal at Morrow Elementary before eventually being named Principal at Northside Elementary, and then Silver Palms Elementary. Along the way, Shearer met her husband who also was born and raised in Broward County, and they have raised two teenagers together: Anabela (age 17) and Mateo (age 15). She took an extended period (8 years) before accepting a Principal position so she could balance raising her children and her career. “I knew becoming a Principal would require much more of my focus and time. As eager as I was to take the next step, I chose and cherished the extra time and energy I needed for my children to grow and develop before I gave my full commitment,” she explained. Once she accepted the position, she was honored and delighted to have many of her teachers and coworkers follow her to Silver Palms Elementary. SPE’s Assistant Principal Shannon Schreidell said, “Mrs. Shearer is an inspirational leader who inspires greatness in those she leads. Her commitment to our students’ academic and social emotional success drives every decision she makes.” As a principal, Shearer believes it is critical to remember what it is like to be in the classroom as a teacher with their challenges and struggles. “Continuous communication is the key to try to keep the additional load off of the teachers’ shoulders so they can perform effectively and succeed,” Shearer added. Many teachers go out of pocket to fund necessary supplies for their classrooms, but Shearer makes a concerted effort to fund classroom supplies through Scholastic Points. For those reasons and many others, SPE is blessed with a family of educators and administration that rarely choose to leave, minimizing turnover and maintaining continuity for the students and their families. “We are only as strong as those who support us,” Shearer said. With a strong team supporting her leadership, Shearer was able to establish a learning partnership with Walter C. Young Middle School (their feeder school) where SPE 5th graders learn 6th grade math. She also brought S.T.E.M., Debate and Robotics programs to SPE and continues to support the Dual Language program. As we all know, there has never been a more challenging time for schools, educators and learning. Shearer has enacted many programs to help children get back to “normal”

f you’ve ever noticed your child seeming lethargic or unmotivated, you’re not alone. As children progress through school, sometimes they become fatigued, struggling to find the “why” behind certain subjects or assignments. At Huntington, we see many reasons students lose motivation, but here are a few of the most common: • Because they’re struggling. When a student has a hard time with a subject, it can be hard to keep up the work. • Because they don’t see the point. If a student doesn’t find a subject interesting or relevant, it’s easy to withdraw or decide that working on homework isn’t worthwhile. • Because they lack confidence. It happens often: a student starts to struggle, grades suffer, and the student declares, “I’ll never be good at this,” and gives up. WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU NOTICE YOUR CHILD IS STRUGGLING TO MOTIVATE? HERE ARE A FEW TIPS: • Encourage a routine. Sticking to a routine feels good and provides a sense of accomplishment. Make sure your child has a good routine and that you uphold it at home. It does make a difference in keeping the learning on task and giving the day good structure. • Let your child take charge. One of the most common mistakes well-intentioned parents make is doing too much for their children. If you’ve been stepping in too much, stop now and let your child take the lead. School is your child’s responsibility—speak of it that way and make sure your actions follow suit. Be on hand for support, but don’t be the leader. • Talk about your child’s goals. Children who set short- and long-term goals tend to be more motivated, eager learners, and are more likely to try things because they want to, not because they have to. So, talk with your child about the future…high

school…college…this year. What does your child want to accomplish? Talk about how your child can get there. • Set a good example. Your child sees what you do and often emulates it. Give your words meaning by practicing what you preach. Take on a 30-book challenge (read 30 books before the end of 2022) and invite your child to join you. Take that online class. Go for that promotion at work. Show your child that learning and growing are exciting and fun activities and you might find that the inspiration rubs off naturally. • Remind your child that not everything is fun. There will be many times that your child lacks motivation because something simply doesn’t sound enjoyable. Rather than commiserate with your child that a subject is hard and boring, talk about its value and how your child has improved in the subject over time. Remind him or her that everything in life requires effort, and sometimes the best lessons come from situations that require effort and grit. Help your child find success in school. If your child is struggling, it’s understandably going to be that much more difficult to maintain motivation. When you notice your child lacking the drive to keep at it in school, call Huntington. We’ll get to the root of what might be causing your child to withdraw (or not try as hard as you know he or she can) and we’ll put a plan of action in place to get your child back on track.
