Dear Readers,

Hello Spring! We are ready for you and all the magic you bring to this world! New growth, fresh blossoms, births and mother nature at its finest, showing us that no matter how long you have to hibernate and endure the dormancy of winter, we all reemerge stronger, rested and ready for whatever comes our way! Spring Break and Summer Camp registrations are happening now! It’s the perfect opportunity to encourage your children to try new things, hone new skills and challenge themselves in different ways. You never know what hidden talent or passion will present itself in your children unless they have the opportunity to explore and try new things. It’s also the perfect time of year to challenge yourselves with new things…golf, pickle ball, volunteering, coaching, workout groups, or continuing education to take care of your own mental, physical and emotional needs. Parents often spend so much time, money and energy on those they care for that they forget about themselves. At first glance, you may see our directory only as a resource for youth sports, but we are so much more…flip through our pages and watch your interests peak with new discoveries, programs and possibilities! Whether it’s a new sport, activity or club, children who are involved have proven to have a better success rate in school than those who don’t participate. Overall, students’ GPAs, test scores, attendance and graduation rates, and college acceptances are so much greater when they are engaged in their school and extracurricular activities. Take some time with your children and consider the many options in our directory for involvement in the community, schools, sports, activities and camps. It’s a win-win for everyone. As you may know, we can’t do what we do without our advertisers and our readers. Our advertisers fuel our company and the readers’ support of our advertisers fuel those businesses. Please mention Sports & Activities Directory when you call or visit our advertisers, that’s the only way they know we are working for them! Thank you all for your support through these trying times, we are working hard to keep this valuable publication in your hands! Enjoy the multitude of events happening around town during this beautiful time of year. Check out the Egg Hunts, concerts, rodeos, plays, dances, and more in our event listings covering February - April for opportunities to create some beautiful memories with your family, friends and neighbors. My best to you,

Margot

Hello Davie Residents,

8

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season. The Town of Davie has an exciting year planned for all our wonderful residents. It is once again time for one of Davie’s long-standing traditions, the 85th annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo. As the redevelopment of downtown Davie continues, the Orange Blossom Festival will be hosted at Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex, on Friday and Saturday, February 25th and 26th. The festival will kick off with a Movie in the Park on Friday, February 25th from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. The evening of family fun will also include arts & crafts vendors, children’s activities and more. Food and beverage will be available for sale. Be sure to bring your blankets and lawn chairs to comfortably view the movie under the stars. On Saturday, February 26th, the festival grounds in Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex will open at 9:00am. The parade will travel through the park beginning at 10:00am. Please arrive early to secure your viewing area along the parade route and to support the Kiwanis Club during their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser. The festival will begin immediately following the parade. Activities include arts & craft vendors, musical entertainment, “Cowboy Town”, petting farm, western carriage display, information displays, and a farmers’ market. There will also be a Kids Korner with rides and activities. In addition, the Davie Woman’s Club will host the annual Strawberry Festival on site. As always, the festival will include two pro rodeo events hosted by the Weekly Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo. The Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo will be held within the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds at 7:30pm, on Saturday, February 26, and at 2:00pm, on Sunday, February 27th. I can’t wait to see everyone in “Cowboy Town,” during one of my favorite yearly events. There are also many other events the Town of Davie offers throughout the year to our residents. Join us on Saturday, March 27th for a Bike Rodeo hosted by the Town of Davie and Broward County at Vista View Park. This will be a fun family event focused on bicycle safety. On Saturday, April 2nd the free Annual Touch-a-Truck event will be hosted within the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Children can explore their favorite trucks, construction vehicles, police cars and fire trucks. On Saturday, April 16th, from 9:00am to 12:00pm, the annual Hippity-Hoppity Egg Hunt will take place at Bamford Sports Complex. Admission is FREE for Davie Residents and includes an egg hunt for children ages 0-11, Inflatable rides, Petting Farm, Hayride, Train Ride, DJ Party and Bunny Ears (while supplies last). Additional activities at a cost include Face painting, Arts & Crafts Vendors, Pictures with Peter Cotton Tail and Food Trucks. Children will be divided into age groups. Special prizes awarded for secret eggs. Don’t forget your cameras and baskets! The Town of Davie also hosts a plethora of recreational programs and activities throughout our parks and community centers. As you browse, through the Sports and Activities Directory, keep a lookout, as all the programs provided by Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department begin with “Davie.” For more information on any Town of Davie program, please call (954)327-3941. Dear Cooper City Residents,

10

I hope the start of 2022 has brought you good health and happiness. While it is early in the year, your City has been busy carrying out a bevy of events and activities. It was a joy to reconnect with friends and neighbors during “Eat to the Beat” in mid-January. The event has become one of your City Commission’s favorite occasions and I think our residents and visitors would agree. I would also like to thank Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony and his leadership staff for attending the event and conversing with our residents. While “Eat to the Beat,” has cemented itself as a Cooper City favorite, I think everyone equally enjoyed the City’s inaugural Business Expo and Job Fair. Thank you to all those who came out to support more than 70 local businesses. Your Business Advisory Board worked hand-in-hand with your City Commission, specifically Commissioner Howard Meltzer who initiated the effort, and City staff to organize a fun and engaging opportunity to promote our City’s businesses and showcase the goods and services available to all of us. The Business Expo and Job Fair offered a unique opportunity to see the fabric of our community collaborating with each other. Our residents were able to mingle, while learning about the vibrant and diverse business sectors that have been developed in “Someplace Special.” Seeing friends and neighbors come together in our City only makes your City Commission’s work more gratifying. We are excited to see multiple projects come to fruition this year. Improvements and enhancements budgeted for this fiscal year are being boosted by federal funding through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA). Cooper City will be receiving nearly $18 million dollars through ARPA, and a portion of those federal dollars are already being put to work. Drainage issues at Bill Lips Sports Complex are being addressed and we are in the early stages of working to provide free WiFi, as promised, at parks across the City. Community assistance programs, striving to support both Cooper City residents and businesses, are also getting ready to roll out. Every project is carefully considered and always looks to make sure it can enhance our quality of life and improve upon the City’s services. As we start looking forward to the spring, I encourage you to visit www.CooperCity.gov and stay up to date on the City’s events and programs. The Recreation Department organizes year-round programs for residents of all ages at both the Community Center and the Pool and Tennis Center. Speaking of the Pool and Tennis Center, that’s where the countywide “Mayors’ Chess Challenge” will take place on Saturday, February 12, starting at 9 AM. I personally invite you to come out and test your skills. I also hope to see you at the upcoming “Senior Expo” on February 5 at 10 AM at Cooper City High School. Furthermore, we are all looking forward to “Founder’s Day,” which is set for Saturday, March 12. Please follow the City’s social media pages for all of the information and updates you will need to enjoy all of these upcoming events. As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing 954-434-4300 and pressing option #6.

Sincerely,

Mayor Greg Ross Cooper City

n the past few years, schools across the nation have experienced unprecedented challenges and changes, from adapting to virtual learning to transitioning back to in-person instruction, all while dealing with a global pandemic. Nova High School in Davie has had to undergo one more big change. Over the last four decades, Nova’s renowned baseball program was headed by legendary longtime coach and Nova alumni, Patrick McQuaid. After his retirement last year, it was only fitting that his successor came from within the Nova Titan family. Coach Brian Luebkert has been coaching baseball at Nova High for the last 24 years. Now, the torch is being passed as he takes on his new role as Nova’s head baseball coach. While the change came at a time of major uncertainty, Coach Luebkert took the opportunity with stride. “Taking over Nova Baseball is an honor,” Coach Luebkert said, “I am excited about the future of Nova Baseball. We have a lot of young talent coming in.” His first year as head coach was no walk in the park. With COVID-19 causing school closures, student quarantines, and turbulent athletics seasons, Coach Luebkert was able to find positives in a year that was so hard on so many. Now, with schools back in full swing, Coach Luebkert is bringing his specialized

F

or the 2021-2022 school year, Griffin Elementary has the smallest student council to date, but they are bringing the biggest change! At Griffin Elementary, our student council is supported by two teachers, Mrs. Shapiro and Ms. Gallagan. Students are encouraged to join student council to make a positive change not only in their school, but also in their community. This year, our student council is only 7 members. We decided to let go of an election and embrace a “board member” method. Each student on our student council has a collective say in what we do not only for the school, but for our community. We collectively meet once or twice a month to discuss upcoming events and ideas the students want to put in place. The teachers of the group are not only facilitators to the students but act as the “chair” of the board members. The teachers encourage the ideas and allow students to collaborate with each other to foster new ideas and change. Our first big project of the year was introducing something new to Griffin. The project was called “Boo! Grams.” Student Council members sold BOO! Grams during Halloween to all the Griffin students and staff. BOO! Grams allowed students to send each other sweet notes and a candy during Halloween for only a dollar. Before BOO! Grams began, student council members had to discuss which candy would work best for all students, even those with allergies. They had to meet several times that month to talk about price points and making a profit. Then, our student council had to advertise this project by creating posters, put

skillset to the field to revive the team’s spirit and get the players back in top shape. His strategy for the year? “Outwork everyone. Practice makes permanent.” In addition to renewing the work ethic that may have dwindled over the last two seasons, Coach Luebkert also plans to provide direction and motivation, set and communicate goals, and most importantly, continue building a family culture that has always been synonymous with Nova Titan Baseball. “Nova Baseball is a family,” Coach Luebkert said, “and we will continue our traditions, including the Marathon game, Nova Titan Golf Scramble, Alumni game, and Nova Davie Baseball camp.” The players and their families can look forward to some new traditions as well. “Last year was the first year we have ever celebrated Senior Night, where all seniors are recognized for their four years of hard work,” Luebkert said. “There will also be upgrades to the baseball facility.” With big shoes to fill and a lineup of eager student athletes, Coach Luebkert is confident that this season is just the beginning of a new Titan Baseball era that will last for many years to come. Nova High School is located at 3600 College Avenue in Davie. Their Principal is Olayemi Awofadeju. They can be reached at (754) 323-1650.

all the papers and the candy together, then deliver them. It was a huge success! Student Council members were even lucky to have a meeting with the Cooper City Mayor, Greg Ross. He sat down with our 7 student council members to talk about the community and the effects that our members will have on our school. He took questions from all our students and encouraged them to continue their pursuit in making not only our school, but the Cooper City community, a better place. As of now, our student council members are busy running our annual “Cookies for Courage” event. This event is where Griffin Elementary students donate store bought cookies to our local courageous Cooper City BSO Fire and Police. Our student council members have been tirelessly advertising using posters and spirit to rally in cookies. They will be donating it to the BSO Cooper City office themselves right before school lets out for Winter Break. The future of Griffin Elementary’s student council is looking strong. We have raised money and we plan on raising more to give back to the students of Griffin Elementary and the community we all share and love. Our student council has a lot of ideas and thoughts on how to support and show love to our students here at Griffin and the surrounding community. Griffin Elementary is located at 5050 SW 116th Ave. in Cooper City. Their Principal is Angie Moodliyar-Jones. They can be reached at (754) 323-5800.

he Law Honor Society is busy preparing for the We the People competition (mock Congressional hearings), the 17th Judicial Circuit Mock Trial Competition, the State of Florida Mock Trial Competition, and the Project Citizen competition. Students in 7th grade law are taking their mock bar exam December 9-14. Once they pass the exam, they become Nova Middle “attorneys” and can begin participating in mock trials. Passing students will be celebrated on January 21, 2022 in a mock swearing-in ceremony. Local attorneys and judges will speak and swear-in the kids. Family members are invited to attend the ceremony. Food will be provided and is funded by Morgan & Morgan. The National Junior Honor Society just completed a food drive benefiting the Pantry of Broward. Students collected 1,001 pounds of food for the charity.

Students are presently working on their school project, for which they hope to create a “Teacher’s Chill Lounge.” They are trying to collect donations of couches, tables, snacks, drinks, and a refrigerator. Later this year, they will host a week of on-campus Valentine’s Day fundraisers, which they hope will raise enough money to fund their induction ceremony at the end of the school year. Nova Middle School’s Engineering Club is involved in several STEM activities this year. They are participating in SECME and VEX Robotics challenges and competitions that encourages team building and critical thinking while exploring basic engineering skills. SCHOOLS My best to you, Teresita Miranda Principal - Cooper City Elementary

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranc hes Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 33 | Februar y - April 2022

Dear Cooper City Community,

It is an honor to introduce myself as the new principal of Cooper City Elementary. With great excitement I joined this excellent school community. My goal as the new principal is to work collaboratively with staff, students, parents and the community to instill a passion for learning and to make a positive impact on each student’s life. The 2021 – 22 school year marks my 22nd year in education. In 2000, I started my educational career at one of the Cooper City schools, Embassy Creek Elementary, where I served as a teacher for 12 years and a literacy coach for four years. Thereafter, I was welcomed as the Assistant Principal at Tropical Elementary and worked with that school community for the past five years. In 1999, I earned my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern University. When I realized that I wanted to take my love for learning beyond the classroom walls, I sought out my master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of West Florida. Those that know me know that I am always looking for learning opportunities. Therefore, I am not done learning and look forward to growing and learning alongside the staff of Cooper City Elementary in my new role. Although appointed as the new principal on November 8th, 2021, I have already learned so much about Cooper City Elementary and how special it is. It is a place where you are welcomed with a friendly smile or wave the minute you walk in, where the collaborative efforts of all who work there are geared towards ensuring that all our students are excited about learning and are looking forward to coming back the next day to learn more. The social and emotional well-being of our students is also of utmost priority and very evident in the various programs that support our students and in the strategies the teachers use daily in the classrooms. I have also witnessed teachers working closely with their students and their families to support our students’ academic growth. As you can see, in such a short period of time, I have already identified lots of great things happening at Cooper City Elementary. My goal is to continue to learn about all the wonderful things that take place here, as well as to infuse the experience I come with in order to support the staff as we prepare our students for the next level in their education journey. I welcome the opportunity to meet more community members as well as potential school partners and volunteers. Please feel free to contact the school if you need to reach me. This year is full of opportunities for you to help support our school and most importantly our students! Thank you for your warm welcome.
