Dear Cooper City Residents,

I am excited to connect with you and share some exciting updates about our beloved City. Firstly, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who contributed to the resounding success of our “Eat to the Beat” events this summer. The unity and camaraderie displayed by our residents during these moments continue to inspire me.

Furthermore, I am delighted to announce that July marked Parks and Recreation Month in Cooper City. This designation is a testament to the exceptional dedication and creativity of our Parks and Recreation Department. They consistently strive to enhance the quality of life for our community. This month-long celebration served as a well-deserved tribute to their hard work and the positive impact they have on our city.

Looking ahead, I am thrilled to extend an invitation to two exciting events taking place in the upcoming fall season. On Saturday, September 9, we will host the highly anticipated Touch-a-Truck event. This interactive experience allows children to indulge their curiosity, sit behind the wheel of their favorite vehicles, and explore the world of trucks. As always, the event promises to be a thrilling adventure for the entire family.

As October approaches, Cooper City will come alive with our incredible Boo-Per City festivities, offering “spooktacular” events for Halloween. Held at Memorial Park and the Countryside Shops, this enchanting event promises to be delightful experience for all attendees. Don’t miss out on the renowned “Trick or Treat Shop to Shop” adventure, where families embark on a delightful journey, collecting treats from participating shops. Additionally, we have the Book Swap event in October, providing an opportunity to exchange slightly-used books and discover new literary treasures.

These events embody the heart of our community, showcasing the unique charm and warmth that makes Cooper City, truly someplace special. They provide occasions for us to come together, to forge connections, and, to celebrate the vibrant spirit of our hometown.

For more information about these events and a comprehensive calendar, please visit our official Cooper City website at www.CooperCity.gov/ Calendar.

Once again, I extend my deepest gratitude to all of you for your unwavering support and participation in making our City thrive. It is an honor to serve as your Mayor, and I am continuously inspired by the remarkable community spirit that defines Cooper City.

As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option 6.

Sincerely,

Central Broward Directory (Davie Cooper City SW Ranches & Plantation) | Issue 62 | Mid AugustOctober 2023 9 AROUND TOWN

Hello Davie Residents,

It’s unbelievable that summer is over so quickly and that another exciting school year that is full of new opportunities has begun here in the Town of Davie. As school gets underway, and students adjust to their busy schedules, please remember that it is never too late to begin teaching essential life safety skills to your children through swim lessons. Throughout the fall, swim lessons will be offered for children, six months and older, as well as adults at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center. Our certified Water Safety Instructors are proud to teach these skills to our community’s children in a fun and safe environment.

Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department also offers many amazing programs, special events and youth sports leagues throughout the year. Currently, we are accepting registrations for our Winter Soccer Leagues for children ages 3-14. Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world, and I’m sure you’re all cheering on the USA Women’s team as they compete in the World Cup! Our youth will participate in exciting games and practices that take place at Bamford Sports Complex located inside beautiful Pine Island Park. Youth sports participation provides many benefits to our children. In addition to helping parents reduce the ever-present device screen time, youth sports teach children teamwork and discipline, provide social opportunities, and assists with the development of self-esteem.

A wide variety of recreational programming is also offered in the Town of Davie, that promotes active lifestyles and the opportunity to learn new life skills. I’d like to take a moment to highlight a few of our unique program offerings. All of our city’s classes and programs can be found by visiting our website at www.davie-fl.gov. Classes that introduce participants to the fundamental concepts of improv, are offered at the newly remodeled Pine Island Multipurpose Center. Students will rehearse spontaneity, listening, and other building blocks of improvisation, all in a supportive environment that embraces the idea of trusting yourself. Chess classes are also available, that help to improve self-confidence, imagination, concentration, and intuition. If a more fast-paced environment is what you are looking for, high energy clogging, jazzercise and karate classes are available which are sure to keep all members of your family fit and active. Additionally, we take pride in offering our Davie seniors numerous programs to help keep them agile and engaged. These include bingo and lunch every Friday, field trips, and chair exercises, as well as cards, beading, crocheting, quilting, and crafting. The Town also honors our Davie Veterans year-round, on the third Tuesday of every month with a Veteran’s breakfast that includes coffee, a hearty meal, and guest speakers. We are proud to provide these exceptional recreational programming opportunities for residents and visitors, including seniors and veterans who have given so much to our community.

When looking through our activities, remember whether it’s community special events, swimming, fitness, youth sports, or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something to offer everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks!

Sincerely,

10 Central Broward Directory (Davie Cooper City SW Ranches & Plantation) | Issue 62 | Mid AugustOctober 2023

Dear Plantation Residents:

I hope that you enjoyed a great summer and are looking forward to a fresh fall season! Our city’s opportunities for recreation continue to grow. The latest development in July was celebrating the grand opening of our Jim Ward Community Center playground. This occasion marks a significant milestone in our community’s commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable space for our children to play, learn, and grow. I’d like to use this occasion to reflect on the importance of playgrounds in fostering physical, social, and cognitive development, and the positive impact they have on our children’s lives.

Playgrounds serve as a sanctuary for children. They’re a place where they can unleash their boundless energy and explore the world around them. It is here that they develop their physical abilities, honing their motor skills, balance, and coordination. From climbing structures to swings and slides, each element of our playground at Jim Ward – and everywhere else -- has been carefully designed to challenge and stimulate our children’s physical capabilities. By engaging in active play, they not only strengthen their bodies but also cultivate a sense of adventure and resilience.

Moreover, playgrounds are vibrant hubs for social interaction. As children engage in imaginative play, they learn to navigate social dynamics, negotiate conflicts, and develop empathy. The playground becomes a microcosm of society, where children from diverse backgrounds come together, fostering a sense of unity and understanding. Through shared experiences and collaborative play, they build lasting friendships and learn the value of teamwork.

I’d like to share the several successes we have had with our teachers and students, right here in Plantation and recognize them for their accomplishments.

Jason Zembuch Young, who produced more than 40 musicals and plays at South Plantation High, made the news this year after winning a Tony Award. He and his husband, Michael Young, have been foster parents to 34 children. Alas, he is leaving after 18 years to teach at a new performing arts school near his home in Wellington.

Josette Burns, a 1996 Plantation High graduate, is retiring after a career that inspired several other Plantation High alumni to join the profession and contribute to their alma matter. She was a National Board-Certified Teacher, a Broward County Social Studies Teacher of the Year, a Plantation High student government advisor, and a tennis coach.

Jill Fiorentino, a long-time assistant principal at Seminole Middle School, was lauded by the City Council upon retirement. Fiorentino also taught at Seagull Alternative High School and served as Assistant Principal at Indian Ridge Middle School.

Alshine Mondesir, one of the four Next Gen Plantation Scholarship recipients, led the pledge at a recent council meeting. She is a graduate from Nova High School and a future meteorologist. Lindsay Stumer and Cassidy Stumer both graduated from South Plantation High and they are headed to University of Florida. Lindsay plans on becoming a veterinarian and Cassidy wants to be a Speech Pathologist. Jade Reid is from Plantation High School, who is heading to Penn State. This $1,000 scholarship is offered by Councilmember Jennifer Andreu and is based on the character, qualities, or achievements of a scholar. “We received 53 applications this year and they were all amazing high school seniors. We are so fortunate to have these scholars and future leaders in our city to pass the torch to,” Councilmember Andreu said.

We have many exciting things happening in the City of Plantation and we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to email me at Mayor@plantation.org. I’ll look forward to seeing you around town this fall!

Sincerely,

TIPS TO START THE SCHOOL YEAR

As summer comes to an end, it is time to shift gears and prepare for the new school year. Going back to school can be an exciting and overwhelming time for children and parents. With the right mindset and preparation, it can be a smooth and successful transition.

1. Establish a Routine: Gradually reintroduce a structured routine a few weeks before school starts. Set regular bedtimes and wake-up times to help adjust to the school schedule. Having a consistent routine can improve focus, productivity, and overall well-being.

2. Organize Supplies: Take inventory and make a list of what needs to be purchased. Involve your child in the process, allowing them to choose their own backpack, notebooks, and other essentials. Organizing in advance will alleviate stress and ensure a smooth beginning.

3. Set Goals: Encourage your child to set academic and personal goals for the upcoming school year. Whether it’s improving grades, participating in extracurricular activities, or developing new skills, setting goals provides motivation and a sense of purpose. Break down their goals into smaller, achievable steps.

4. Create a Study Space & Establish Homework Habits: Designate a quiet and well-lit area in your home as a dedicated study space. Ensure it is free from distractions and stocked with necessary supplies like pens, paper, and a dictionary. Having a designated study space helps children focus and develop good study habits such as a specific time of day, inclusion of breaks

and reasonable expectations for support.

5. Encourage Reading: Foster a love for reading (improves vocabulary, comprehension, imagination and critical thinking) by providing a variety of books that align with your child’s interests. Set aside time for independent reading and engage in discussions about the books they are reading.

6. Communicate with Teachers: Establish open lines of communication with your child’s teachers. Attend parent-teacher conferences, introduce yourself early in the school year, and stay informed about progress. This will allow for collaboration and ensures that your child’s educational needs are being met.

7. Encourage Healthy Habits: Encourage regular exercise, nutritious meals, and adequate sleep. Physical activity helps improve concentration and reduces stress, while a balanced diet provides the necessary fuel for learning. Sufficient sleep is crucial for cognitive function and overall well-being.

9. Celebrate Achievements: Finally, celebrate your child’s achievements, big or small. Recognize their hard work, progress, and accomplishments throughout the school year. Positive reinforcement boosts self-esteem and motivates children to continue striving for success.

Remember that education is a journey. By implementing these educational tips and strategies, you can help your child start the school year on the right foot and set them up for a successful and fulfilling academic experience.

Nova Titan’s Football team has nurtured players of excellence by focusing on sportsmanship, excellence, and mentorship. So, it is no surprise that one of its own would want to come and continue the tradition of crafting players of excellence at his Alma Mater. Meet Nova High’s New Head Football Coach, Tyrus McCloud.

Tyrus McCloud, a past student of Nova High, fondly remembers his time as a football player on the Nova Titan Football Team. He credits this experience to his success as a college athlete at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where he played middle linebacker on the University’s stellar football team. His beginnings as a Nova Titan football player, were the seeds that blossomed into the fruit of him being drafted to play professional football for the Baltimore Ravens.

When asked for his ‘why’ as it relates to taking on the head coach position of Nova Titan’s football team, Coach McCloud responded, “I wanted to sow into the lives of students who were like me when I was growing up. I understand what it means to be a Nova Titan, and I wanted to provide a similar experience for the players today.”

This experience included being mentored by a past Miami Dolphins player, who helped young Tyrus McCloud focus and develop the work ethic that led him to finish college and enter the professional draft. When recalling his most memorable moment of the season as head football coach for Nova, Coach McCloud did not relay wins on the field, as expected, he instead spoke of the transformation he saw within the players who became more focused on and off the field, due to his leadership. In addition, he highlighted the drive and motivation his team members now exhibit as, they approach the season’s games, ending with more wins than losses.

“Taking over the Nova Football team is an honor,” Coach McCloud said, “One that I do not take lightly.”

When asked about the future of Nova Titan football, Coach McCloud responded, “I hope to bring excitement and energy to the football program when asked about his future for the Nova Titan Football program. I want the football team to continue to add to the school’s spirit and benefit the community.”

He hopes his players will benefit not just as athletes by being a part of his program but will become men of integrity.

When asked about a favorite quote, he responded, “…All you need is all you got.” These words testify to his journey thus far, and he plans to use them for inspiration as he reaches back to continue the legacy of the Nova Titan football team.

On the first day of school, the doors burst open with excited and apprehensive students ready for their first day at Fox Trail Elementary. The students quickly calmed down after hearing about the amazing things they will be involved in this year. A typical year at Fox Trail includes a top-notch curriculum, a wide variety of clubs, fun field trips, and support for those who need it to ensure that all our students shine!

Fox Trail students shine brightly in academics thanks to the help of our hard working and dedicated teachers. Our teachers put in an extreme amount of effort to make learning fun. The teachers’ efforts have paid off since most of our students received 3 or above on the F.A.S.T. assessment this past May. Fox Trail offers extra-curricular activities and clubs that are meant to expand our student’s the knowledge and offer them additional opportunities for academic growth. Our high-achieving clubs include Primary Debate, Intermediate Debate, Art, Choir, Fox Bots, and STEM. Our clubs have won many awards that exhibit great leadership qualities. Our debate team, run by Mrs. Rivera, has won over 40 medals throughout the year and sent 22 students to the state championships, where they won 10 trophies! Our Fox Bots, run by our STEM teacher, Mrs. Alberico, has been awarded the only elementary school that made it to the state championship in Jacksonville. The club received a Core Values Award, plus an award for their Innovation Project. Overall, they won 7 advancement bids and 6 awards. 4. Think Win-Win; 5. Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood; 6. Synergy and 7. Sharpen the Saw. These habits help our students to become problem solvers, productive leaders, and overall amazing people in the real world. Our school also offers amazing guidance & support to our students that need help, we have 3 guidance counselors on site to assist them. We do not tolerate bullying of any kind and have a program in place to monitor such activity. Some of our 5th graders participate in our Safety Patrol program, led by Mrs. Michelle. Safety Patrol students walk around the school to ensure everyone’s safety and they report to their designated posts before and after school. At the end of the year, the 4th graders become Safety Patrols In-Training under the guidance of the acting Safety Patrols in preparation for the coming school year.

School is a journey, and sometimes that journey will take your child off course or down an unintended path. Even the best of students will find some subjects or concepts difficult, but when an academic issue becomes bigger or seems to be affecting your child for an extended period of time, it’s best not to ignore it. Here are a few tips on how to help your child confront lingering learning issues that simply aren’t going away on their own:

• Check the organization. Is your child disorganized and constantly losing track of papers and homework? Is staying on top of assignments problematic? Does your child not use a planner no matter how much you suggest it? It is possible that your child is causing many of their own problems with poor organization and haphazard homework routines (e.g., relying too much on their memory to remember assignments and test dates). Make sure they fine-tune their organization skills.

• Evaluate the time management. Some students struggle with managing their time more than anything else. This could be due to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which causes struggles with focus, task completion, organization and staying on track while doing just about any activity. Check your child’s routine. Do they have one in place? Have you set expectations for what they must accomplish in the mornings and after school? Help your child become more efficient with better time management.

• Observe your child and pay close attention. You can learn a lot about what struggles your child is having by watching them do homework. Watch how your child operates. Is your child struggling with the work, staying on task, or both?

Which subjects take the longest and cause the most stress? If your child needs better homework habits, check out these homework strategies.

• Develop a game plan. Once you’ve gathered information and evaluated the problem on your own, it’s time to strategize about how to fix school issues too. Talk with your child’s teacher, or if you have an older student, encourage them to do so first. The teacher is an important resource who can share their observations of what’s happening in the classroom. They can work with your child to take appropriate action and can refer you to the right school resources if needed.

The new school year is just getting underway, but if you notice that your child seems to lack skills and knowledge they should have acquired in prior years, is getting poor grades already, is angry or apathetic about school, or has needs that are not being met, don’t wait to deal with these issues. Your child needs help getting back on track.

Another year is upon us, and there are endless possibilities that await us. Plantation High School has made gains from the previous year, but we aspire to climb even higher. Teachers and staff are excited to welcome our students for the 2023-2024 school year. As we continue to maintain the family environment on our campus, relationships will be built, and high expectations will be set.
