Dear Cooper City Residents,

As summer approaches, anticipation builds for our upcoming summer camp. We are dedicated to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all children, and I am thrilled to share some information about our preparations. Our Parks and Recreation team has been hard at work creating an exciting program. With a variety of activities, from sports to arts and crafts, to educational workshops and field trips, there is something for everyone.

This year’s camp is split into two sessions: June 17 - July 5 (no camp on July 4) and July 8 - July 26. Registration opened to Cooper City residents on April 4, and for non-residents on April 25, closing May 31 or once filled.

Avoid last-minute rushes by registering promptly at either the Community Center (9000 SW 90 Place) or the Pool and Tennis Center (11600 Stonebridge Parkway). We offer payment plans to assist families.

We are confident this summer will provide opportunities for friendship, skill building, and loads of fun in a safe and secure environment. Kudos to our Parks and Recreation team for their dedication in making this camp a success.

I would be remiss not to recognize all the wonderful moms in our community. In celebration of Mother’s Day, Cooper City will be holding “Mystery at the Mother’s Day Tea Party” on May 4, a delightful event for mothers, grandmothers, and motherly figures to enjoy with children.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers in Cooper City and beyond! Your love and dedication are truly appreciated and celebrated. For information on all City events and programs, please visit www. CooperCity.gov/Calendar. If you have any questions about summer camp or the city’s additional recreational activities, please call (954) 434-4300 and dial 3.

Hello Davie Residents,

I hope that everyone is looking forward to another exciting summer in Cowboy Town USA, Davie, Florida! While our students and teachers are taking a well-deserved break, we will have a wide variety of recreational programs and special events for all our Town of Davie Residents to enjoy over the next few months.

One of the best ways to cool off this summer is to go swimming in one of the Town’s beautiful pools located at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center and Betty Booth Roberts Park. You can also beat the heat at our splash pad located at Shenandoah Park. Swim lessons, which are an essential component of the Town’s #SaferBy4 campaign, are available year-round at the Fitness and Aquatic Center. #SaferBy4, spearheaded in the Town of Davie by both the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts and Fire Departments is an effort to reduce preventable childhood deaths. The campaign is designed to help children reach their fourth birthday by teaching basic water safety skills through swim lessons.

This summer, the Town will continue offering community events that will honor our military, celebrate the birth of our amazing country, and showcase our open spaces and nature. On Monday, May 27, the Town of Davie and the Boy Scouts will honor our fallen heroes during our annual Memorial Day Event. The parade will start at 10:00AM and will be followed by a ceremony that will include a guest speaker, who will pay homage to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our incredible country.

Join us at Bamford Sports Complex on Thursday, July 4, for our annual Independence Day Celebration, “Fun on the Fourth”, to commemorate the birthday of our incredible nation. Fun times will be had from 6:00PM-9:00PM, with live music, food trucks, and games and activities for the entire family. Don’t forget to bring your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the best fireworks display in South Florida! This event is for Davie residents only, and attendees must pre-register.

We also look forward to seeing our outstanding Davie anglers together again this summer trying to reel in the big one. On Saturday, August 3, the annual Take-AKid Fishin’ Rodeo will be held at the Town of Davie Golf and Country Club. This catch and release event, which focuses on conservation and sportsmanship, allows the entire family to enjoy a morning together by the water. Prizes will be awarded for various categories of fish caught, including the biggest and most unusual catch. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will also be in attendance to help teach our youth ways to manage fish and wildlife resources for their long-term well-being.

When looking through the Sports & Activities Directory remember: Whether it’s youth sports, fitness, swimming, recreation classes, or special community events, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department has activities for everyone in your family. For more information about any Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941.

As always, see you in the parks, and remember to like us on Facebook.

Sincerely,

10 Central Broward Directory (Davie Cooper City SW Ranches & Plantation) | Issue 65 | MayMid August 2024

Greetings Plantation Residents:

As the Mayor of our vibrant Plantation, I am excited to share with you all the exciting activities happening this summer season in our great City. Summer is a time of joy, community, and celebration, and our city’s parks and recreation programs are at the heart of it all.

Independence Day is a highlight of the summer season, and we have exciting events planned to commemorate this important day in our nation’s history. The day begins with our annual Independence Day Parade down Broward Boulevard. This year’s theme is “The Olympic Spirit.” Join us later at Central Park for a spectacular fireworks display, live music, delicious food trucks, and fun activities for the whole family. Let’s come together to honor the ideals of freedom and unity that make our country great.

We also can’t leave out our celebration of Plantation’s dads. Learn to be a Rock Star 101 at our Jamming with Dad event on June 17 at the Plantation Community Center.

The summer reading program is a beloved tradition that encourages children and families to dive into the world of books and imagination. Join the Helen B. Hoffman Library for a summer of story times, crafts, and more. Let’s inspire a love for reading and learning in our youth and build a stronger, more literate community together.

In conclusion, I am excited for the summer ahead and the opportunities it brings to connect, celebrate, and enjoy the beauty of our parks and recreational spaces. I encourage all residents to take advantage of the wonderful programs and events offered by the City of Plantation and create lasting memories with family and friends.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for our city’s programs. Let’s make this summer a season to remember!

State of the City: I issued my first-ever State of the City address, first to employees and then to the general public in April. Our permitting process has improved, with more accountability and some time-consuming and unnecessary steps being eliminated. We are partway through adding 14 pickleball courts across the city and we are undergoing a complete code rewrite. The addition of a stormwater manager will prepare us better in flooding situations and bodyworn cameras for police are on the way. See my 30-minute address at Plantation.org.

Mayoral info: I provide information about twice a month and it can be sent to your inbox. I want to lift the curtain off local government and spell out exactly what we’re doing. I think that makes for a better city. I also recently added a “Mayor’s Minute” video and you can get that every Monday. The goal of the one-minute video is to give you an idea of what is coming up that week (only). If you’re like me, you especially lock-in your weekly plans on Monday.

You may contact me directly via email at Mayor@Plantation.org.

Warm regards,

The Weston Warriors has made a move back to Pop Warner in the Greater Miami South Florida Chapter and will compete with local Pop Warner programs in South Florida. Founded in 1929, Pop Warner is the Nation’s Leading Youth Football, Cheerleading and Dance program. Pop Warner enforces a national rule book that incorporates time-tested rules and regulations, has strict equipment requirements, mandates volunteer screening and training certifications, and provides necessary resources, such an administrative manual, to assist member leagues and associations in sound policy creation. A league decision allowing teams to compete with other teams of different rules & ages spurred the move back to Pop Warner.

Some of the many benefits of joining the Weston Warriors in Pop Warner are:

• Compete against the Best in the Nation - Pop Warner Football Super Bowl and National Cheer & Dance Championships take place in Orlando for the right to be crowned Pop Warner National Champion.

• Fun, Fun, Fun! - The #1 reason kids play sports. Specialized systems to ensure that every child learns & every child plays!

Central Broward Directory (Davie Cooper City SW Ranches & Plantation)

T he summer is upon us. It is both an exciting and stressful time, especially if you are planning on traveling with small children. They are extremely curious, have high energy and require a great deal of supervision or “parenting.” Here is a practical guide to enjoying your family travels, creating lasting memories, and raising adventurous children.

Before Traveling: Start talking about the trip with your child weeks or months before. Utilize pictures or read them stories about airplanes or other activities you might be doing. If possible, plan to stay in places similar to your home. Instead of at a hotel, you may stay in an apartment where the child can keep routines like playing or taking a nap.

Train your child to be patient. Vacation trips often include a lot of waiting (e.g., boarding airplanes). One way to increase patience is to use a “First/Then” interaction style. When your child asks for their tablet around a meal time, you would reply, “first you need to eat, then you can earn your tablet.” The goal is to be concise and clear: First this, then that. When your child completes your request, you would immediately give them the promised reward. This will create the expectation that following times when you say “first,” they will trust you to comply. Establish

this dynamic before traveling.

During the Trip: When traveling with young children embrace empathy and flexibility. Empathy to understand that children will become exhausted from traveling. Flexibility to stay calm and content even when plans need to be altered from your original goal. Flexibility in scheduling is important to allow for resting moments: for children and yourselves!

Remember to reinforce positive behavior. When your child is quiet, tell them, “I like it when you are calm and playing with your toys.” At times, if your children do not receive your attention when they behave well, they can find less appropriate ways to get it.

Another very effective strategy is to save their favorite toy for critical moments. For example, if your child loves to play on your phone, save it fort moments when they must be calm (i.e., passport checking).

After the Trip: Every trip can become a learning opportunity. Take time to revisit the trip memories with your child. Consistently reinforce for behaving well and continue applying the “first/then” technique. These strategies will improve their behavior each time, and your vacations will be increasingly enjoyable.

F or two decades, ChessArt has made an indelible mark in education, utilizing chess and art for the cognitive and creative development of young minds. As we celebrate this milestone, it’s crucial to reflect on the benefits of these programs. Chess, know as the “Royal Game” is foundational in ChessArt’s educational approach. Beyond being a game, it teaches critical skills like decisionmaking and problem-solving. Plus, it enhances academic performance and fostering concentration and self-confidence.

Our art program is equally vital in a student’s holistic development. Through creative expression, they explore imagination and develop artistic skills beyond the canvas. By

improving problem solving, self-expression, self-esteem and promoting cultural appreciation and diversity. Over these 20 years, ChessArt has witnessed countless success stories where students have thrived due to their commitment to chess and art. Looking to the future, we are confident in continuing to transform lives and pave the way for a brighter future. Here’s to many more years of success and growth help students!

Not only do we offer afterschool programs, but we also offer Summer, Spring and Winter Camps. You can visit us at www. chessartkids.us.com or www.chessartkids.com, or call us at (954) 850-2353 or (954) 650-2562 or (954) 234-3771.

Nestled within our community, Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School has been quietly bustling with activities that reflect our commitment to education, community engagement, and creativity. This year marks a significant milestone for us as we introduce the inaugural ACES Magnet Program, offering three areas of study: Aerospace & Engineering, Innovative Arts, and E-Commerce & Entrepreneurship. We are excited about having the opportunity to expand our offerings and provide students with diverse opportunities to explore their passions and develop essential skills for the future.

One noteworthy event that resonated deeply with our values was the beach clean-up organized by the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park. This initiative underscored our dedication to environmental stewardship and civic responsibility. Guided by our educators and NEHS mentors, our students worked diligently to preserve the natural beauty of our coastline, fostering a deeper connection to the world around them.

Another highlight of our recent endeavors was the Mini Magnet Showcase, where we celebrated literature with a focus on “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White. Families and students participated in interactive activities that brought the story to life. We were particularly touched by the transformation of our media center, which represented different scenes from the novel, creating an immersive experience for all involved.

Simple yet meaningful activities such as crafting spider webs and building parachutes in honor of Charlotte’s legacy further enriched the experience, nurturing a love for storytelling and literacy among our students.

A heartwarming moment at the Mini Magnet Showcase was the presence of a real live pig, which captivated attendees of all ages. As children interacted with the gentle creature, they gained a deeper appreciation for the themes of friendship and compassion depicted in the novel.

At Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School, we strive to foster a culture of inclusivity and diversity, where every voice is valued. Through initiatives such as peer mentoring programs and multicultural celebrations, our endeavor is to promote understanding and connection among our students.

As we reflect on these recent events, we are reminded of the humble beginnings from which we have grown. Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School remains committed to our core values of excellence, compassion, and lifelong learning. With each new endeavor, we are grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of our students and community members alike.

Mirror Lake Elementary is located at 1200 NW 72nd Avenue, Plantation 33313 and can be reached at (754) 322-7100.
