The scholars are not only excited to be in the building, but they are determined to excel with hard work and dedication. We begin each school day by reciting, The Pledge of Allegiance, The Power of Three Pledge, and our Tiger Affirmation… I am Positive, I am Prepared, I will always do my Best! Our parents, scholars and staff are all proud to be Plantation Tigers. Our school pride is echoed in every one of our principal’s voicemail messages, beginning with, “Hello Plantation Family, this is your Proud Principal, Mrs. Pitter.

There are so many things happening at Plantation Elementary. The parents came out in large numbers for our Open House and Dad Take Your Child to School Day. Hispanic Heritage Month was amazing! Many students completed their research projects about Hispanic countries and about famous Hispanic people. We celebrated Hispanic Heritage in the last week in September. The staff wore their favorite country’s traditional colors and we enjoyed a pot luck of traditional Hispanic foods. We also held our Fall Harvest Drive which was very successful this year. We collected many food items that were donated.

The excitement on campus continues as we prepare for the upcoming Magnet Open house and Museum Night on November 18th. As a STEM Museum Magnet School, we have not been able to have a Museum Night since Fall of 2019. We’ve missed so much during the pandemic, so we decided that it’s time for a “resurgence!” The chorus, musicians and dancers have started rehearsing for our Winter Show, our Debate Team is preparing for the upcoming district competitions and STEM special is preparing our students to “Think Like Engineers” by teaching the scholars the Engineering Design Process.

Our teachers plan rigorous lessons for our scholars, and we have already started our school-wide after School “Tiger Tutoring”. Tiger Nation is determined to close the learning gap that has occurred during the last year or so. Geometry Friday is underway. Every Friday, math instruction is dedicated to measurement and geometry lessons. Scholars are also learning about geometry from the many posters that adorn the walls of each hallway.

We appreciate every partner and parent who has joined the movement. We are proud of our staff and scholars for embracing the cultural shift. It’s Game On and it’s time to Level Up!

HURRICANE MAKE-UP DAYS:

January 10, 2022 February 14, 2022 March 17, 2022

We are proud to start the 2021-2022 school year with an “upward movement” theme. Teachers and staff have embraced the concept of catering to the whole student at Plantation High School. The students have transitioned back into a traditional classroom education experience and have adjusted well. Our students are offered multiple academic programs to choose from including the International Baccalaureate Magnet Program, the Cambridge Program, and the Gifted Magnet Program.

We are excited to announce that in our inaugural year as a Cambridge School, our passing rates have met the district or state average. We are anticipating continued success with the Cambridge program and look forward to welcoming many more students into the program in the years to come. In addition, our school’s career programs offer postsecondary options which are available to all the students on our campus.

Congratulations to our two National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists and National Merit Commended Scholar. These students have been recognized at the national level and we continue to support other students as they reach their full potential.

One of Plantation High School’s teachers received the 2021 Oral History Association (OHA) Martha Ross Teaching Award!

The students in our Aerospace program have been invited once again to take part in the NASA program where they compete against students from other schools nationwide.

The fall and winter sports are in full swing including football, volleyball, cross country, swimming, and golf. Our athletes remain energetic and strive to represent our school at each practice, scrimmage, and game. Way to go Colonels!

We’d like to thank the City of Plantation for its continued support. We look forward to implementing our “upward movement” theme and reaching our goals this year.

Plantation High School is located at 6901 NW 16th Street, Plantation 33313 and can be reached at (754) 322-1850.

Tropical Elementary faculty and staff were so thrilled to welcome our Toucans back to school for the 2021-2022 school year. Our new schoolwide theme is “Return of The Toucans” which can be seen in our school’s photos and on campus. Everyone has been really excited about being back at school again.

Tropical Elementary is a neighborhood public school in Plantation that celebrated its 50th school year in 2019. Our teachers are passionate about teaching Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies to our students. Our Toucans [students] are also taught how to be good citizens in their community. We recognize and celebrate many special days and/or months during the school year to honor the community.

We began September by recognizing 911 heros & first responders. We recognized Hispanic Heritage month and Deaf Awareness month that are also held in September. Finally, we hosted a week-long Celebration of Peace which included dressing in colorful t-shirts on certain days, as we shared peaceful messages towards one-another. The celebration ended with a parade, and a beautifully crafted “Peace Pole” that was presented in the school’s butterfly garden, and was created by our Art teacher, Ms. Hodges.

We are looking forward to celebrating the fall with events that honor literacy. “Read For The Record” is an event for our Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Each child will each have the opportunity to take home a copy of the storybook that is featured. Our school-wide “Character Book Parade” is next, where students and staff will dress up as their favorite book character.

Our amazing PTA is sponsoring a family friendly “Fall Festival” at Seminole Park, which we are all looking forward to. Special events continue in November, by honoring our Veterans with a special luncheon in our festively decorated cafeteria. We will continue to give thanks for our families, friends, and for our communities throughout November in honor of Thanksgiving. We encourage our students to take part in their community and in our Tropical family community at school. Our goal is to nurture our students towards becoming successful, well-rounded citizens. We are proud of all our Tropical Toucans past and present.

Tropical Elementary is located at 1500 SW 66th Avenue, Plantation 33317 and can be reached at (754) 323-7750.

The pandemic took a toll on many students and the current reality is many who have fallen behind and lost motivation. Falling grades are problematic, but an even bigger issue is when your child seems uninterested in turning things around. What can you do to help your child who seems apathetic about school and whose As have dwindled to Cs? Here are several tips:

Have an open conversation. Without judgment or frustration, talk with your child about what they’re feeling. When did problems start? What subjects have been especially difficult? Let your child know that you want them to find success in school, but more importantly, you want them to feel good about themselves going into this new year.

Discuss the importance of effort. Sometimes, school is difficult. This past year proved that things can change suddenly, and for many students, that’s not ideal. Your child needs the reminder that hard things require significant effort. Not every subject comes easy and your child might not always like what they learn. But in the end, the achievement is worth the struggle. Tell your child to take pride in their accomplishments.

Make sure your child is challenged. Remote learning was fraught with problems and led to not only a loss of skills for many students, but also a loss of interest. As you head into this new school year, make sure your child spends time setting goals and laying out the steps to achieve those goals. Talk about what aspects of the school year are exciting and what they are hoping to learn and do during this new year. Sometimes, a little effort toward thinking about these things helps students refocus.

Work to rebuild their academic stamina. With many students learning remotely for much or all of last school year, chances are high that your child might have lost some of their fortitude to study and persist through challenging school work. Set high but achievable expectations. Express confidence in your child. Remind them to view learning as continuous so that they develop a growth mindset (rather than a fixed mindset). And ask their teachers for suggestions on how to reestablish good habits.

Focus on time management. For many students, the chaos of last school year led to many bad habits. Get your child back on track with a few best practices: planner use, planning out every homework session so that they minimize wasted time, good homework routines and the use of timers and reminders. This keeps your child on track and deters procrastination. It can also help with the child who avoids homework by simplifying what they have to do.

Understandably, many children have experienced negative feelings about school in the last year and a half. This coming school year is likely to be a year of refocusing and rebuilding. If your child seemed unmotivated at the end of the last school year and their grades showed the same, call Huntington. We can investigate the problem and identify exactly what is going on, then develop a customized program of instruction. Our approach is effective and will help your student turn things around quickly! Call 1-800 CAN LEARN today.

New River Middle School has been offering a Marine Science Magnet Program for over 20 years. Our school has been recognized by the Magnet Schools of America as a Nationally Certified Magnet School that includes a School of Distinction since 2015. New River Middle School added a second magnet program, iCAN (Integrated Career and Academic Networks) three years ago in 2017. The iCAN Magnet Program has given our students the opportunity to explore various academic and career paths through their academy course electives, in addition to the program’s core curriculum.

The iCAN magnet program encompasses four different academies: The Marine & Biomedical Sciences Academy; The Arts & Humanities Academy; The Engineering & Design Academy; and The Business, Finance, & Entrepreneurship Academy. Each academy includes various course electives such as debate, band, engineering, entrepreneurship, forensics, broadcasting, marine science, and many others that are available for the students to choose from.

The goal of each Magnet program, along with our standard curriculum courses are to provide high-quality learning opportunities for our students with an emphasis on marine education and its application in the real world through hands-on learning and field experiences. We strive to infuse an academic curriculum with a marine focus on conservation, awareness, and stewardship into all of the courses, while exposing our students to a variety of academic and career paths.

New River Middle School allows students to explore all the academies’ opportunities during their three years in middle school. Students learn about future careers that allow them to engage with their community.

Engaging in the community starts in our own backyard. Our school participated in an International Coastal Cleanup this September with Mission Possible: Clean our Beach! We had over 480 volunteers and collected nearly 400 pounds of trash! We kicked off our Project Based Learning (PBL) engaging in taking care of our environment and addressing the issues of marine pollution through Mission Possible: Marine Plastics/Pollution. The students & faculty had a fun time while supporting a great cause.

Our 2022 School Related Employee of the Year award goes to Frank Griffin. Mr. Griffin is the Head Custodian at Mirror Lake Elementary. This year is his 32nd year with the Broward County Public Schools. We have had the pleasure of having Mr. Griffin at our school throughout his entire career with the school system. His hard work and dedication can be seen in and around our campus. Mr. Griffin is always willing to lend a hand, after hours and on weekends as needed. We appreciate his continued dedication and commitment to our school.

Our 2022 Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Andi Gresham. Mrs. Gresham has been teaching class within the Broward County School System for 16 years. Mrs. Gresham came to Mirror Lake Elementary seven years ago and we are grateful to have her. She was teaching at Plantation Elementary for nine years prior to coming to Mirror Lake. Mrs. Gresham teaches the students in our Gifted/High Achiever program. She is also the Team Leader for first grade, Union Steward, a Donors Choose Ambassador, and the Textbooks Coordinator. She is hardworking and is dedicated to the students.

Some days Mrs. Gresham comes to school dressed in costumes and wears a wig to entertain the children which they very much enjoy. She is always willing to assist a teacher or student in need. Mrs. Gresham has created an incentive program for her pupils. They can earn a special lawn sign for their home that acknowledges their achievements. She’ll even hand deliver the sign herself! Every week, her students receive postcards in the mail rewarding them for their success in the classroom. During the start of the pandemic, Mrs. Gresham began offering a live story time on her Facebook page called “Teach Gresham”. Due to its popularity, she will continue the live remotes throughout the school year on Thursday evenings. Tune in next Thursday on FB @TeachGresham.

Congratulations to Mr. Frank Griffin and Mrs. Gresham on your 2022 Awards, you make our school a better place!

In the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-nine years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the yearround effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive.

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.”

This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 185 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 8,900 families (approximately 27,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time and beyond. Distribution sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.
