Dear Readers,

It’s hard to believe a year has gone by since I took over as publisher of this magazine. I’ve learned and grown so much over the past 12 months. I feel blessed to love what I do. It doesn’t feel like a job, it just feels like it’s part of me. Thank you all for your support. November 11th is Veterans Day so let’s make sure we say THANK YOU when we see a veteran. I would like to share a story of how much our service men and women mean to me. When my Uncle Frank, my dad’s twin brother, came to live in Florida he always wore his WW II Veteran cap. Every time I took him out, someone would always come up to him to say, “thank you for your service.” I can’t tell you how much joy that gave him. He would always say “they don’t do that back in New York.” He was a proud WW II veteran, and though he never sought recognition, one small comment could make his day. Once at a restaurant someone even picked up his check. Sometimes we take for granted all the sacrifices our veterans make. Little acts of kindness and recognition such as these can make a huge impact on those who have served and sacrificed for this country, as well as their families. If you know a WW II, Korean War, or Vietnam War veteran a great way to say THANK YOU is to give them the gift of an Honor Flight. Honor Flight is a South Florida based non-profit that takes veterans on a free trip to Washington DC to visit all the monuments and honor them for their service. Go to www.honorflightsouthflorida.com to help them get signed up. When they return home, they are greeted by a Homecoming. As the plane lands they are met by a hero’s welcome, hundreds of people showing their appreciation and support. Even if you don’t have a veteran to take on the Honor Flight, I highly encourage you to come to a homecoming. It will be an experience you will never forget, and you will be proud to be an American. Make sure to check out our Events Page this quarter. As always the city will be putting on a slew of great events. This quarter there is SnowFest, many people’s favorite holiday event. They bring in tons of snow, so kids and families can enjoy a winter wonderland in our tropical backyard. Please don’t forget to stop by and visit all our wonderful advertisers and tell them you saw their ad in the Sports & Activities Directory. With the holiday season upon us I would like to wish you and your family a Happy Holiday season. No matter how you celebrate, take time to be with loved ones and enjoy each other’s company. May 2024 be a happy, healthy, safe, and prosperous year for all of us. All my best to you,

Linda

Dear Readers,

8

We started this month off on a positive note with “Extra Mile Day,” which is November 1, 2023, and recognizes that all people can create positive change in themselves, families, organizations and communities by going the extra mile in their lives. I know that as Mayor of our great City of Pembroke Pines, it is always my goal to go the extra mile for our residents and businesses. I encourage everyone to go the extra mile in their pursuit of dreams and in their lives, adding volunteerism and service to help our communities. I am proud to say that we are a very generous city, especially at this time of year. For the past 20 years, The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103 Ave., has joined together with schools, businesses, and residents, to gather donations for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For 100 families in the Pembroke Pines Community, assisted by these donations, this program makes this holiday time very special. The donations provide qualifying families with generously filled bins of non-perishable foods (canned and dried), turkeys and much more to ensure a bountiful Thanksgiving meal. Donations must be in no later than Thursday, November 9, 2023, and can be dropped off at the Center. For more information, please call 954-450-6888 I hope to see everyone at this year’s Veterans Day Observance on Wednesday, November 11, 2023, at noon at the Charles F. Dodge City Center Memorial Park, located across from 601 City Center Way to honor and recognize the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The ceremony will feature the presentation of colors, musical performances, and guest speakers. And save the date for one of the most favorite events of the year – Snowfest. Pembroke Pines residents are welcome to join the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department for this holiday evening of fun on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. Santa and all his cool friends will be on hand as children have a chance to play in tons of snow, the air will also be filled with the sounds of the holidays with over 300 singers and dancers on the holiday stage, and snow flurries will fly through the air throughout the event. The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place at 6:30PM. There will be free parking, free rides and free activities. Concessions will be available for purchase. The event is open for residents only and tickets are required. For ticket details, please visit www. ppines.com/specialevents, follow the City’s social media on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter (X) and Next Door or contact the Special Events office at 954-392-2116 I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

S

ince the start of my tenure as a state legislator, there have been about 19 bills to improve the lives of our veterans. Florida has one of the highest veteran populations across the entire country, and it is important that we take care of these brave individuals who have done so much for our country. This most recent legislative session, I cosponsored HB 635 which established a grant program for veterans who do not qualify for dental assistance through the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). The VA estimates only 15% of veterans receive dental care through their programs. Now, veterans can receive much needed dental care. I also cosponsored HB 139 which implemented an Office of Veteran Licensure Services to assist veterans with health care licensure programs and processes for veterans and their spouses. The office must refer veterans seeking training or employment to Veterans Florida, a non-profit within the VA that helps veterans obtain employment. Resources provided by the State and Federal Government are listed below: Governor’s Challenge: To impact suicide prevention at the state level, the VA along with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration initiated the “Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families.” This initiative seeks to create a supportive environment for veterans by offering accessible mental health resources, counseling, and peer support programs. The goal of this initiative is to develop and implement a state-wide suicide prevention plan. To date, 35 states have joined the Challenge, including Florida. The vast array of other support available through the Florida Governor’s Challenge is available at www.floridavets.org/governors-challenge/resources/. Florida also encourages struggling service members, veterans, and their families to call the Florida Veterans Support Line at 1-844-MyFLVet (693-5838) or the National Suicide Crisis Line at 9-8-8 (Press 1). Watch Stander Program: The Watch Stander Program is the first of its kind and provides resources to the community volunteers so that they can in turn, help the heroes who have risked their lives to protect our country. Any community member can volunteer, you will be taught how to link veterans to the services and support they need. To be a Watch Stander, you must undergo a 45-minute training and sign a pledge. To get involved, visit: www.thefirewatch.org/watch-standers. tudents, parents, and teachers recently participated in “Leadership Night” at Pines Lakes Elementary. The annual event was expanded this year to include parent and teacher leaders in addition to students. Under the vision of Principal Susan Sasse, the event kicked off the school year by recognizing leadership at all levels. The program inducted the Safety Patrol and Student Council members, recognized PTA , and acknowledged new teachers to the profession. The Student Council President, Andia Reid and Vice President, Aliyah Walker welcomed the guests with the Pledge of Allegiance. Safety Patrol Representative Jiya Fretwell had the honor of introducing the Student Council & Safety Patrol Sponsors Mrs. Luria-Littleton & Ms. Wright. In their speech, both those sponsors praised the student leaders for being involved in ways that make the school a safer and better place for students. An added bonus to this tradition was recognizing the newly formed PTA Board. Principal Sasse & Assistant Principal Amrita Balroop handed out a red rose to the four elected Board members. The PTA President, Julia Camacho encouraged parents to be involved and join the PTA. She stated “Together we can continue to make our school the best place to be because it is the best!” Teachers within their first two years of the profession were announced and

estled in the heart of Pembroke Pines, lies our gem of an elementary school that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence and fostering a culture of kindness and respect. Silver Palms Elementary stands as a shining example of what a nurturing educational environment can achieve. Silver Palms teachers, staff, families, and community stakeholders celebrate the school’s remarkable journey towards becoming a beacon of quality education and empathy within the community. Silver Palms has consistently raised the bar for academic excellence in the zone. The dedicated staff, forward-thinking administration, supportive families, and motivated students have all played a pivotal role in achieving this reputation. Teachers, support staff, and administration understand that education is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our school offers a diverse and innovative approach to instruction that caters to the needs of our students. Students are encouraged to explore their interests and talents through enrichment activities and clubs like Debate, Chorus, Chess, VEX Robotics, SECME (Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics, and Enrichment), Math Club, Fine Arts Club, National Honors Society, Safety Patrols, and School Broadcast Team. Furthermore, the backbone of any great school is its teaching staff, and Silver Palms Elementary is no exception. The educators at Silver Palms are not only highly qualified but also passionate about students’ academic success, character development and overall wellness. Our teachers truly go the extra mile to ensure that every student reaches their full potential. Additionally, Silver Palms holds its students to high academic standards. The school’s dedication to rigorous instruction ensures that students are well-prepared for the challenges of higher education. We also recognize that academic excellence is not just about high grades but also about fostering a love for learning. At Silver Palms we create a supportive and nurturing environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, seek help, and take risks in their academic pursuits. Moreover, Silver Palms places a strong emphasis on building a culture of kindness and respect among its students and staff. We have been at the forefront of cultivating an environment where kindness overcomes bullying. Through workshops, assemblies,

welcomed to the stage. In her speech, Principal Sasse shared that she got the idea after hearing a friend talk about their son’s white coat ceremony. She went on to explain that the ceremony is a ritual to signify one’s entrance into their professional endeavors. Principal Sasse said, “when I heard about this, I wondered why the MOST important profession- teaching – doesn’t have a ritual to recognize educators as they start their careers.” As the students & teachers crossed the stage, each were pinned to signify their contributions to the school. The program closed out with the Teacher of the Year, Ms. Melanie Muroff, addressing the participants and guests. She shared that she was also a student leader when she was in school and commended the students for being leaders. The students were excited to hear that she too was a Safety Patrol & Student Council member back in the day. Ms. Muroff was presented with a plant as Principal Sasse explained, “as you do for our students every day, we know your warm and caring ways will help this plant grow and prosper.” The night concluded with a small reception for teachers and their families. They enjoyed treats from a new local business partner, The Peach Cobbler. It was a sweet way to end a memorable evening! Visit us at 10300 Johnson Street, Pembroke Pines, FL 33026. (754) 323-7100

Pembroke Pines Focuses on Finding Solutions Challenging Today’s Youth positive relationships between parents and their children. On another forum, school principals and students joined a panel to share their perspective about what is really happening in schools, the issues not necessarily read about in headlines, and what they think is needed to solve many concerns faced each day. And, even during the pandemic, virtual forums were held at which live streams could be viewed and videos posted on the City’s YouTube channel under Pembroke Pines Media. Dr. Laura Cruz, director of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) for the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools and a psychologist specializing in child and adolescent clinical psychology, is the most recent featured speaker, but one of many others who have been a part of the forums. She spoke at the October Raising Positive Children Forum which focused on “Communicating with Your Child – Take Home Techniques.” This was a follow-up forum to one held in March which focused on “Tapping into Your Parent Superpowers.” Parents shared feedback, wanting “real world” strategies that they could use in their homes. So, Dr. Cruz specifically focused that forum on how to handle difficult conversations at home, foster healthy media usage and support children working through their concerns or fears. At this forum, there were also short skits and presentations to help more vividly demonstrate the application of these skills. At many of the forums, students from the Pembroke Pines Charter School System have also performed and shared various skits, poems and musical presentations. From ballet to drum lines, chorus to acting, students of all ages have been a part of these forums to enhance and contribute to the topic of the forum. “Each forum is unique, relevant, and tries to tackle the many different challenges facing parents and families today,” said Vice Mayor Iris A. Siple. “We are fortunate to have had some very special and insightful speakers share their views, and those who have attended continue to ask for more to be held. It’s important for parents to realize they are not alone in what they are experiencing and how best to cope or react to the challenges their children face on a day to day basis.” Working hand in hand with the “Raising Positive Children” forums, the City of Pembroke Pines also created a special section on its city website at www.ppines.com under “Resident Resources - Living in Pines” that provides youth and family mental health resources, complete with easy to follow links. Past forums can also be view on YouTube and on the City’s website. Invitations and forum announcements are sent through the Pembroke Pines schools, local churches, social media and posted on the City’s website. Held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way, they are free, and everyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are never required.

he City of Pembroke Pines has made it its mission to address and find solutions for critical issues affecting youth and their families today. It began several years ago with the creation of an Education Roundtable, composed of Pembroke Pines school principals and city staff, which was led by Pembroke Pines Vice Mayor Iris A. Siple and Pembroke Pines Charter School West Campus Principal Michael Castellano. Members met to share ideas on how best to help students and families in the community tackle some very serious issues. An idea from these meetings resulted in the creation of a “Raising Positive Children” forum, which then became an on-going series of forums. All parents, grandparents, guardians, educators, youth advocates and school-age children are invited to the forums to learn more about topics that call attention to and find solutions for the many challenging issues parents and children face today at home and at school. To date, 12 forums have taken place with nationally recognized guest speakers and local panelists who have shared information and discussed topics such as positive parenting, cyberbullying, youth suicide, depression, stress, peer pressure and digital addiction. Thousands have attended the forums, and feedback from parents who have attended has been overwhelmingly positive, describing them as “extremely valuable” and “insightful.” As part of the forum series, local organizations and agencies such as United Way, Broward 211 and Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention, Inc. (FISP) and Memorial Hospital are available on site to talk to parents, share resources and distribute helpful information in the lobby of the Charles F. Dodge City Center. Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue and Police have also been on the panels as first responders who deal with the tragedies that result from the many problems youth face today on a daily basis. In 2019, the City was awarded the “City Spirit Award” by the Florida League of Cities (FLC) for the Raising Positive Children series. This Florida Municipal Achievement Award was presented at a City Commission meeting, and a feature article highlighted the series in the FLC’s Quarterly Cities publication. Each “Raising Positive Children” forum guest speaker has brought a unique perspective to the various issues. Dr. Steve Poland, a Professor at the College of Psychology and Co-Director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at Nova Southeastern University, helped those in attendance understand common factors in youth suicide, and offered insight into how parents, schools and the community can help today’s youth, and be aware of clear warning signs that could help save a life. Dr. Bob Barnes, author of 10 books on families and CEO of Sheridan House Family Ministries, focused on Parenting on Purpose by addressing family dynamics, setting boundaries, and creating meaningful and

he halls of Lakeside Elementary are alive with enthusiasm as we reflect upon an extraordinary school opening that has set the tone for an exceptional academic year. As the proud principal of this esteemed institution, it brings me immense pleasure to share the remarkable journey we’ve embarked upon, all centered around the inspiring theme of “The Dream Team: Dream More, Achieve More, Succeed More.” Our school’s opening was a resounding triumph, uniting parents, scholars, and staff in a celebration of learning and community. The highlight of our commencement was our annual Open House events, where families were invited to step into their children’s learning environments, meet our dedicated educators, and witness the innovative teaching methods that will shape our scholars’ growth this year. Underpinning this academic year is the resounding call to action encapsulated in “The Dream Team” theme. This overarching concept encapsulates the idea of not just setting goals but pushing boundaries to attain them. Our scholars are encouraged to dream bigger, work harder, and strive for heights they might not have deemed reachable before. Central to our educational philosophy is the emphasis on grit and growth. These principles form the bedrock of nurturing well-rounded individuals who can surmount challenges, flourish in a rapidly evolving world, and ultimately become responsible and engaged citizens. Our notion of grit comprises four vital components: Gumption-The courage to venture into the unknown, take risks, and embrace the learning journey with enthusiasm. Resiliency- ability to rebound from setbacks, transforming difficulties into opportunities for growth and building unwavering self-confidence. Integrity-The cultivation of honesty, responsibility, and ethical behavior, instilling a sense of integrity that will guide students throughout their lives. Tenacity-The cultivation of an attitude that refuses to surrender, teaching students that persistence and dedication are the cornerstones of realizing long-term objectives.

These principles of grit permeate every facet of our curriculum, extracurricular activities, and daily interactions. By infusing challenges with a sense of purpose and encouraging scholars to surmount obstacles, we’re empowering them to uncover their inherent potential and understand the value of diligence and determination. Our approach to “The Dream Team” extends beyond the confines of the classroom. Collaboration with parents, community members, and local businesses is a fundamental aspect of our strategy. Together, we forge a supportive network that fosters dreams and ambitions, reinforcing the values of grit, growth, and teamwork. As we look ahead to the months that lie before us, the staff and I are brimming with anticipation to witness the incredible progress, accomplishments, and triumphs that our students will undoubtedly experience. “The Dream Team” theme encapsulates our dedication to creating an environment where dreams aren’t just fanciful notions, but tangible realities crafted through diligence, resilience, and grit. In conclusion, the fantastic commencement of Lakeside Elementary’s academic year and the resounding success of our open houses have paved the way for an outstanding year ahead. Guided by “The Dream Team” philosophy and bolstered by the principles of grit encompassing gumption, resiliency, integrity, and tenacity, we’re poised to cultivate a generation of individuals who will dream, achieve, and succeed beyond measure. As a united Gator Nation, we stand ready to witness our scholars soar to new pinnacles of excellence. You are welcome to visit our school at 900 NW 136th Avenue, Pembroke Pines 33028 for a tour.

World of Knowledge Learning Center kicks off the new school year celebrating 20 years serving the young children in the communities of Pembroke Pines, Miramar and surrounding cities. “For the past two decades, we have been blessed with the opportunity of seeing young children build a strong academic foundation through music and play. One of the main goals of the school is to embrace multiculturalism and help young children learn about the different cultures that make up our world. Our lessons truly bring the world to your child’s learning experience throughout the year in an exciting way.” says Elizabeth Gonzalez, Owner/Director of the school. A World of Knowledge was a pioneer in introducing VPK to the community and one of the largest providers in Broward since the program’s inception in 2005. Between 100 - 150 students graduate from the program each year and enter Kindergarten with high reading and math levels. Principals and teachers in the surrounding public schools, highly recommend A World of Knowledge Learning Center because the students are prepared academically, socially and emotionally as they begin their elementary school journey. For almost 20 years, the center under the direction of Elizabeth Gonzalez, has introduced the concepts of letters, sounds, and higher order critical thinking skills in a fun, interactive and engaging way for students starting at the age of one. The school is recognized by many parents and educators

as #1 Choice for QUALITY in Early Learning and has been named BEST PRESCHOOL in Pembroke Pines three years in a row. Our teachers are certified and experienced teachers who have a passion for teaching young children and helping them achieve their highest potential even at a young age. “The BEST COMPLIMENT I can receive, comes from our parents, when they share success stories of their children in school, and attribute those successes to the foundation they received at A World of Knowledge.” said Ms. Gonzalez. A World of Knowledge offers an accelerated learning program which allows children to explore everyday concepts at their pace, in a fun way allowing them to reach their higher potential. Children attending our PreK1 -PreK4 program are engaged in numerous phonemic awareness activities that will help them achieve success in reading at a young age. Gonzalez proudly adds: “Our success with the children is based on our teaching styles, low child to teacher ratio, staff dedication and the unique multicultural themes and concepts which were created specifically for our school. Multicultural Awareness, Character education, values and etiquette are also essential components of our curriculum.” Contact A World of Knowledge Learning Center and Preschool, and experience the difference for yourself as you tour the center.
