Dear Readers,

Greetings to all and delightful wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season to you and your loved ones!

In the pages ahead, you will find a multitude of events for you and your families to enjoy in celebration of the holidays. Check out our detailed Event Directory for all the holiday events you won’t want to miss including the Farmers Markets, Light Up the Park and the Coral Springs Annual Holiday Parade & Parkland’s Family Fun Fest. There is a wonderful season of amazing shows lined up at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. We are so lucky to have this incredible cultural center in our back yard.

Be sure to read about all the great things our students and teachers are accomplishing in our local schools, from sports awards and academic accolades to community service projects. We continue to be so proud of our Coral Springs & Parkland schools. They truly are the best!

Look for our special feature about the book “A History of Parkland, Florida” written by Frank J. Cavaioli, PH.D and our very own Vice Mayor of Parkland Kenneth A. Cutler Esq. I personally found it to be an incredible read and was amazed by the history of our beautiful City of Parkland.

We love to support our community and continue to partner with the Harvest Fest Thanksgiving Drive. All the details you need to find out how you can help, can be found in this issue.

Also inside, are winter break camps that will be offered while the kids are off school. And, as many sports wrap up their fall seasons, remember to look through the sports directory (red tabbed) for winter and spring registrations that are taking place now.

There are ongoing afterschool programs and activities such as acting, dance, gymnastics, coding, martial arts, tennis & so much more and we cover them all! Living in Florida provides a large variety of options for our children to enjoy while developing new friendships, physical and/or academic skills, and overall enrichment as they challenge themselves with new activities. Like we always say: “We have it all in The Directory!!”

My best to you, Kim Kadel Publisher

Dear Parkland Residents,

In the City of Parkland (City) the City Commission spends a lot of time mulling over various issues, policies, and points of concern as they pertain to residents. Florida’s Government in the Sunshine law rightly dictates that this mulling take place in a public space so residents can see their government in action. In short, the people’s work should be done in front of the people (in the sunshine not the shade).

Over the last few months this has been on display in our City in a big way. We have spent a lot of that time researching, debating, and meeting with residents, homeowners’ associations (HOAs), various other entities, and even with the City of Coral Springs City Commission. Our City Commission and our City staff have worked incredibly hard to ensure we had the most accurate information to ensure we could make the most educated decision regarding the purchase of 65 acres of land that was part of the old Heron Bay golf course, the portion that fronts Nob Hill Road north of Holmberg Road and south of Trails End.

Historically we know, whether in our City or any other, with votes this important, there are those who agree and those who disagree. Having cordial debate is an important part of the process. Make no mistake, the thought process behind our decision to buy the property took everything into consideration to make sure we were doing what is in the best interest of all of Parkland, not just one group or one neighborhood. We now have much greater control in determining what will ultimately be built on this highly visible property and we will truly drive our future.

Our efforts to engage with our residents and learn their perspective to find the right balance that Parkland needs and wants was priority number one. Our vote in the City Commission meeting on September 21, 2022 in favor of buying the property started the process of fine-tuning our City codes and finalizing a plan to ensure Parkland’s financial future continues to be strong for years to come.

Currently we are in the 90-day due diligence period which includes a property survey, an environmental study to determine the quality of the soil on the property, and working with the Heron Bay HOA to release a restrictive covenant on the property. The release of that covenant, part of the lengthy and ongoing conversations we have had with the Heron Bay HOA, further ensures the City’s control over the future of this property. The City has created web pages that will be updated as our work continues so all residents can be in the know throughout the process. Cityofparkland.org/ParklandTogether is the place to go for up-to-date information on this project. Our endgame in this is to partner with a developer, one with a track record of success and a penchant for building quality properties that stand the test of time, to ensure that together we produce the desired outcome that will best serve all of our residents. Not only is that the intention of this project—it is also a microcosm of city government.

If you would like to share your thoughts about any part of this process or you have questions or comments you’d like to share with me, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.

Your Parkland Mayor, Rich Walker

Dear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses,

The City has great momentum these days. Thankfully, there is progress being made with Downtown Coral Springs! WE are expecting considerable nightlife, entertainment, great retail shops and a truly walkable downtown! Our First Responders continue to be recognized for their outstanding work and recently the city sent many of our Firefighters and Behavioral Help Team to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.

In October, we held Oktoberfest and hosted thousands of people for a fun event for families of all ages. WE have many more great events on the horizon and you can find them all at www.coralsprings.gov/events. About 8 Friday nights a year we host “Bites and Sips” for our community on our City Hall Lawn. You can bring a blanket, your friends, family and purchase food and beverages from the 10 or more food trucks we have. It’s a great way to get connected with your Coral Springs community.

One of my primary objectives as your Mayor is to engage with you. I have served off and on since 2002 and one of my favorite roles as one of your City Commissioners is merely getting to know as many of you as possible and to truly be of service to you. I find that the more time I spend with our citizens, the better I am at my job. I hold office hours regularly (often on Fridays) and you can contact Luwam Ghermay to set an appointment at (954) 344-5906.

Did you know that anyone can comment at a Coral Springs City Commission Meeting? We meet the first and third Wednesdays of every month at 6:30PM. Any member of the public can bring up an idea, share a concern (or gratitude) and promote a fundraiser for up to three minutes. It’s a great way for your entire commission to hear from you at the same time. While we don’t guarantee a response from the dais, you can be assured that your Commission and your City will hear your voice!

One of my favorite aspects of our City is our Public Art Program. Recently, we unveiled Coalescence, an interactive Art Piece at the Art walk (located just south and east of City Hall, south of 3200 N. University Drive). Congrats and thank you to the Artist, William Nemitoff and to the Public Art Committed for making this amazing work of art a reality for our City!

Lastly, I want to wish you all a Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving and a sweet holiday season. Please know that your Commission values you and we always want the best for you and your families. While many of us have different struggles, we also live in a wonderful, family-oriented community with the best First Responders, an excellent hospital, awesome parks and so much more. We all have a lot to be grateful for! If you need me, email me at Sbrook@coralsprings.gov or call my cell at 954-494-9872.

I n 2015, a former history professor at State University of New York— Farmingdale (now Farmingdale State University), Frank Cavaioli, approached Ken Cutler, the current Vice Mayor of the City of Parkland, with the request to review a draft manuscript for a book on the history of Parkland. Frank who, with his wife Lorraine, moved to Aston Gardens in Parkland in 2013 was fascinated by the city but knew from lectures given by Ken Cutler at the Parkland Historical Society’s meetings, that there was much he didn’t know about Parkland. Ken, who moved to the Cypress Head development in 1997 with his wife Sharon (who teaches at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School) to raise their family, had a wealth of knowledge and collected materials about Parkland and for a long time had intentions of writing a history book about the city, agreed to review the manuscript. It did not take long before a collaboration of the two ensued and, over the next seven years, multiple drafts and hundreds of hours later, the book, “A History of Parkland, Florida” was published. Historical events, including the Parkland tragedy, two Marches for Our Lives, a pandemic, and the duties and obligations of running a law practice at the Coral Springs based, Cutler Rader law firm, as well as being a full-time commissioner for Parkland, had the effect of prolonging the process. Nonetheless, on August 22, 2022, at the age of 92, Frank and Ken would launch the new

publication at Aston Gardens to a large crowd on interested residents and visitors. Frank, who has authored more than ten books, was extremely proud of this accomplishment and Cutler, a self-taught genealogist and recent recipient of the Golden Quill Award from the Florida State Historical Society for his historical research article on Florida’s Supreme Court Justice George W. Macrae, could not be happier to publish his first book.

The authors describe the contents of the book as follows: “After a brief background description of Florida’s growth, this volume presents Parkland’s early history detailing its leading pioneers and their contributions. Within the overall community, a spirit of optimism emerged, commingled with early settlers’ later expressions of nostalgia as ‘progress and expansion’ modified its rural lifestyle. This narrative history continues as it deals with the challenges of constant growth that community leaders successfully managed to build a remarkable community and great place to live.” Reviews of the book have been excellent.

The book is available at Amazon www.amazon.com/dp/B0B7QDLCR8 or can be purchased directly from Ken Cutler (and he will happily sign it for you) at the Cutler Rader law firm by calling 954-913-2273. The office is located at 3111 N. University Drive, suite 705, Coral Springs, FL.

Coral Springs & Parkland Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 34 | November 2022January 2023 20 AROUND TOWN CORAL SPRINGS & PARKLAND

Boy! Stocks (and bonds) are taking a beating lately.

From the way the market is behaving, it may seem like some of the world’s largest and most profitable companies are suddenly becoming dramatically less valuable. Are they all laying off workers, slashing prices, closing factories, and declaring imminent bankruptcy?

NO! Stock prices are NOT typically a precise indicator of what companies are worth. They ARE a very good indicator of what people are willing to pay for their shares, and right now there seems to be more sellers than buyers. As J.P. Morgan once said, “in bear markets, stocks return to their rightful owners.”

The rationale for a bear market is seldom rational—which, of course, is why bear markets end and stocks return to (and always, in the past, have surpassed) their original highs.

Things seem dark out there, and many inexperienced investors are losing hope. But for those that are still contribute money (i.e., into a 401k) to their future, this bear market should not be met with anxiety, but with open arms.

If you were contributing $100 every month to the SP 500 (considered by many investors to be the best overall measurement of American stock market performance), you would have been able to purchase one half a share at the beginning of 2015.

By the end of 2021, that same $100 only got you one-fifth of a share.

Now that markets have pulled back, your money is able to work harder, LESS BUYS YOU MORE. The money that you already invested is worth less, but the money you’re investing today will be worth more in the future.

Bear markets are no fun, but this is where all the best long-term returns come from. The dollars you invest on the way down will be worth more on the way back up.

I trust that you were not expecting to hear how long inflation will last, or to measure its long-term economic impact, or to glean any insights into exactly when the markets will eventually recover.

Of course, neither I nor does anyone else have any idea of those things.

Those of us advisers who have experienced major downturns remember how unexpected they were, how experts and pundits were caught by surprise, and how wrong they were when they tried to tell us what was coming next.

I do not claim to know what’s next or when the next 25% move down in the stock market happen...I only know one thing: which direction the next 100% movement in the stock market is going to be.

Be well and INVEST WISELY!

A Guide to Enjoying Your Family Travels

The holiday season is around the corner. They are both an exciting and stressful time, especially if you are planning on traveling with small children because of fear of misbehaving. Here is a practical guide to enjoying your family travels, creating lasting memories, and raising adventurous children.

Before Traveling

Start talking about the trip with your child weeks or months before. Utilize pictures or read them stories about airplanes or other activities you might be doing. If possible, plan to stay in places similar to your home. Instead of at a hotel, you may stay in an apartment where the child can keep routines like playing or taking a nap.

Train your child to be patient. Vacation trips often include a lot of waiting (e.g., boarding airplanes). One way to increase patience is to use a “First/Then” interaction style. When your child asks for their tablet around a meal time, you would reply, “first you need to eat, then you can earn your tablet.” The goal is to be concise and clear: First this, then that. When your child completes your request, you would immediately give them the promised reward. This will create the expectation that following times when you say “first,” they will trust you to comply. Establish this dynamic before traveling.

During the Trip

When traveling with young children embrace empathy and flexibility. Empathy to understand that children will become exhausted from traveling. Flexibility to stay calm and content even when plans need to be altered from your original goal. Flexibility in scheduling is important to allow for resting moments: for children and yourselves!

Remember to reinforce positive behavior. When your child is quiet, tell them, “I like it when you are calm and playing with your toys.” At times, if your children do not receive your attention when they behave well, they can find less appropriate ways to get it.

Another very effective strategy is to save their favorite toy for critical moments. For example, if your child loves to play on your phone, save it for moments when they must be calm (i.e., passport checking).

After the Trip

Every trip can become a learning opportunity. Take time to revisit the trip memories with your child. Consistently reinforce behaving well and continue applying the “first/ then” technique. These strategies will improve their behavior each time, and your vacations will be increasingly enjoyable.

H unt Elementary is honored to be part of such an amazing community. We are a very diverse school, and many of our families come from another country. At Hunt elementary, we celebrate and embrace diversity. Last month we had the opportunity to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Our students, staff, and parents had an amazing time learning about different cultures with the music, dress-up days, and Flag activity. If you want to be in a place where we learn and have fun, Hunt Elementary is the place to be.

October was a month filled with activities, we had ESOL Night, Red Ribbon Week, Fall Fest, Book Fair, Read for the Records, and Book Character Parade. We are looking forward to the Holidays and all the upcoming activities. We are having Thanksgiving celebrations, where we teach literacy and writing standard-based instructions

and integrate social-emotional learning of being thankful and kind. We also have a curriculum night coming in December.

Please remember to join PTO and follow us on Twitter @HuntElementary. Don’t miss the exciting and great activities happening at Hunt Elementary. Stay positive and be safe!

James S. Hunt Elementary is located at 7800 NW 35th Court in Coral Springs. Their Principal is Rendolyn Amaker. They can be reached at (754) 322-6500.

H appy Fall! We started the month of October with some fun activities for our families at the school. Our Scholastic Book Fair was held from the week of October 10 through October 14. There were so many great books for all ages. All the funds that were received go right back into our school and into your children’s education. The book fair made the perfect opportunity to purchase holiday gifts for the children and friends.

We hosted our Family Science Night on October 13. Families were invited to come visit so they could make observations and conduct experiments during the science event. Our Book Fair was open, too so the parents were able to enjoy shopping in between the science experiments. In addition, the Title 1 Resource Van was onsite. Parents that visited the van, were able to borrow academic materials and games that were available to engage and play your children. We hope all our families had some fun and enjoyed learning new things along with the children.

We had a costume parade on October 31. All students that celebrate Halloween were permitted to wear their costume to school and participate in our parade.

Parents have always been welcomed to join us and watch our fun parade and the children loved having their families participate. In addition, the PTA hosted a give back dance to all the students during the event. What a fun time it was!

On Friday, November 18, our Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon will take place. All families are invited to come in and have lunch with their children. The cafeteria will be decorated in a fall theme accompanied by nice music to complete the event. It is such a special day for everyone. We hope everyone can join us and take part in this special event.

We are very proud of our students who are off to a fantastic start this year. We thank our parents for joining us for our School Advisory meetings, supporting our PTA, and volunteering in the classroom. Your dedication to our school makes all the difference! Thanks for being a part of Parkside Elementary Where we are Exploring to the Stars. Visit our website at parkside.browardschools.com for more information.

M eet Coral Park’s most deserving Teacher of the Year, Donna Casanas and our Employee of the Year, Mr. Tony Sanford. Ms. Casanas is in her 42nd year of teaching. She has been the one and only art teacher here at Coral Park. She has put art in the hearts of many children over the year!! Mr. Sanford, otherwise known as “Mr. Tony” is our assistant head facilities service person. Mr. Tony’s kind demeanor and smile along with his willing to assist spirit helps to make our campus shine bright! They are just two examples of our amazing caring and dedicated staff!

Learning is happening exponentially! Students have opportunities to not only grow academically, but socially and emotionally as well. At Coral Park, our theme of kindness is foundational to our learning environment. We have over 85 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who serve as “Play Pals” who are partnered with other students to be a “buddy” and assist where and as needed. Our Safety Patrol

program is growing as our fifth graders are now mentoring “Junior Safety Patrols” of kindergarten students assisting in the morning with arrival. Our morning news, WCPE, brings live up to date news to our school each morning. Learning goes beyond the academic day as our teachers volunteer to provide students with afterschool opportunities including Art, Chorus, Drama, and STEM. Learning extends to our parents as well, through evenings such as our Math Extravaganza and Literacy Night for students and parents to learn together.

The school year has only just begun, and we have so much more in store for our boys and girls! We invite you to come for a tour to learn more about Coral Park Elementary, or what we call, Coral Springs’ hidden gem!!

Coral Park Elementary is located at 8401 Westview Drive, Coral Springs, FL 33067. Their principal is Camilie Pontillo. They can be reached at (754) 322-5850 or coralpark.browardschools.com.

A fter the hectic start of the school year, the autumn months not only bring a change in the season but also bring a change in pace. During this season, we feel a reprieve from the beginning of the year hustle as students, teachers, and staff start to settle into the routines, procedures, and the reality of the school year. By this time in the school year, students know the classroom routines and school expectations, teachers are becoming more familiar with the curriculum and their students, and staff are getting into a rhythm in fulfilling their responsibilities. By now the intention for the year is set and teaching and learning are underway. Both parents and students have been acclimated to the new school year as teachers begin to build on the groundwork that has been laid to achieve academic and social growth. This year we started the year with some big changes in curriculum and state standards. Our teachers have been working diligently to implement the new BEST Standards and assessment requirements. Classrooms are buzzing with targeted instruction to bridge gaps and challenge students.

Not only are we seeing a strong academic focus, but we are also seeing our students exhibit our LifeSkills and GATOR characteristics. One of those characteristics that we have seen our students and families demonstrate is “Offer Kindness.” This month, our Gators had an opportunity to show kindness to schools on the West Coast that were affected by Hurricane Ian. Our school community banded

together to donate clothes, blankets, and pillows. The response from our families was outstanding! We collected an abundance of items. Once again, the Riverglades community demonstrated great generosity and kindness.

Although we have been busy with teaching and learning, we also make sure to include some fun educational activities as well. One activity we enjoyed was Peace Week. During Peace Week, our Save Promise Club kicked off our schoolwide Chalk Walk by writing messages of peace with chalk in visible areas around the school. In addition to promoting a culture of peace, on International Peace Day our students and staff participated in a Peace Dress-up day. Another educational activity that occurred was the celebration of Heritage Month. The Dual Language classes celebrated this special month by putting on a musical performance for parents. Students dressed up in cultural attire and sang songs in Spanish. Additionally, the entire school also participated in theme days, lessons, and projects that focused on the Hispanic culture and contributions.

As you can see, we have been very busy at Riverglades. As the year progresses, we will continue to delve deeper into our academic goals while integrating characterbuilding opportunities and fun activities to ensure that our students are provided with a well-rounded education.

Riverglades Elementary is located at 7400 Parkside Dr., Parkland 33076. Their principal is Joanne Seltzer. They can be reached at (754) 322-8200.

W hoo Hoo! We are so excited to be in the Fall season! We hope everything went well for our Ram’s Family and all surrounding communities during Hurricane Ian’s close path to our area which caused schools to close for two days. Our awesome PTO responded by setting up a Hurricane Ian Disaster Relief program on our campus to collect items to assist affected families on the West Coast of Florida. They have made three trips to deliver much needed donated items.

On a happier note, we had a successful Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you to our active parents for participating in the Book Fair Family Night and our grandparents for purchasing books for their grandchildren on opening day. A big thank you also goes out to our PTO for spearheading and coordinating the entire event. Another thanks to our Media Specialist, Mrs. Murphy, for assisting the PTO and managing all media special classes for the entire book fair week.

We are excited to announce we recruited new volunteers during our

Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. The new volunteers have committed to work in classrooms and assist the PTO. We welcome all the help we can get!

Congratulations to Ms. Sara Valentin, Teacher of the Year and Elizabeth Tamarez, School Related Employee of the Year. Kudos to you both!

F all greetings! We have been very busy at FHE these past months focusing on rules and expectations to assist in making our students’ school year BRIGHT. We have had practice drills during which students have done an excellent job helping to keep themselves and each other safe. We know they will continue to keep up the great work this month!

Last month we kicked off our first student of the month for Kids of Character. Our character trait was cooperation. Students have done a fabulous job cooperating with each other, their teacher and staff. Students even had the opportunity to share an example of cooperation on the morning announcements. They were nervous but so excited! The character trait for October is responsibility. Each week, students will share and learn about ways that they have been responsible. We ask parents to please remember to practice these monthly traits at home with their children as parents are their first role models.

Kids of Character Student Nominations for September: Maliyah Richards, Olateju Base, Madison Ram, Hailey Smitter, Savanah Foster, Alexander Acevedo, Lucia Garcia, Bella Perez Martinez, Ava Minott, Kiara Maldonado, Isaac Timothee, Sebastian Jativa, Logan Robertson, Marah Sainval, Janelle Alcide, Cordell Goodwin, Vanessa Colon-Contreas, Christian Robertson, Erickson Clement, Christopher Boin, Asrtid Guerrier, Jayden Rodriguez-Verdier, Angelo Cuadros, Seniyah Ferdinand, Matthew Jean-Louis, Kedianna Dennison, Isaac Fleury, Aria Fortillus, Isaiah Ifrene, Emma Sanchez, Degranda Fleury. Way to go! We are so very proud of you!!!

In addition, classroom guidance lessons have also been in full effect. Last month, students learned about different emotions/ feelings and know who they can go to at school when they’re in need of emotional support. Classroom guidance lessons will continued to take place all month with conversations about bullying, as October is anti-bullying awareness month. Our students’ mental health is so important for them to grow academically, behaviorally, and socially/emotionally. We will do our best to make sure that all children learning at Forest Hills Elementary are provided with the resources and a safe space in which they can thrive to be the best they can be.

Kindness multiplied is the culture of caring for others while building stronger community is the Harvest Drive theme for this year. This is nothing new for Renee Herman who founded this grass roots non-profit organization 30 years ago on the principle of teaching children the importance of compassion and empathy for others. What began as an annual Thanksgiving Drive had blossomed into a year-round volunteer-driven effort approximately 20 years ago. Entering its 30th year, Harvest Drive continues its tradition by once again helping families to have a bountiful Thanksgiving feast and enough groceries for the holiday week.

You may ask, how can I help and make a difference for the local school families? The ultimate success of the Harvest Drive rests on the generosity of the community through monetary donations and non-perishable food. We are committed to assisting families year-round with monthly food packings and 3 school pantries.

Renee says acts of kindness like this is what inspires her to continue her mission as she hears truly heartbreaking stories of families struggling to put food on the table for their children. It’s important for us to keep the momentum up as the Harvest Drive shifts into high gear. Over the next month Renee and Team Harvest will be working almost around-theclock to get the record 13 distribution sites up and running, in addition to coordinating donations from approximately 200 participating schools across Broward County.

All donations can be dropped off to our Flagship School at Western High School Mini Gym on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, from 3:00pm-9:00pm. Call for other drop off locations or if you have any other questions. Renee Herman at (954) 444-5548 or renee.herman@harvestdriveflorida.com.

The Harvest Drive Team is very grateful to you and the community for your continued support! “Children Helping Children” remains the mission of the Harvest Drive.
