Dear Readers:

Happy Holidays to you and your family! I can’t believe another year has flown by and we are in the holiday season of 2023. Where does the time go? As a mother of a young, school-aged child, I seem to feel as if life is moving more quickly than it ever has before. Between school schedules, volunteering, enrichment programs and events, I’m sure most of our readers who are parents would agree. Sports & Activities Directory Central Broward is also celebrating this holiday season. We have completed our first year of publishing and I hope you have enjoyed having access to your neighboring city’s sports, activities, camps & events that are happening just next door. I am proud to be able to offer the many resources we feature for all families in Central Broward and beyond to enjoy. The winter season is my favorite time of year in South Florida. The weather cools down and it’s a beautiful time to be outside. Check out our Calendar in the Events Section (green tab) for all the fun holiday-themed events our wonderful cities have lined up for you to enjoy. As we head into the new year, it’s a great time to go outdoors to try a new sport, visit local attractions, attend local events and enjoy the time together outside as a family. Broward County Public Schools will be closed for Thanksgiving Break the week of November 20-24, and Winter Break begins on Monday, December 25-Friday, January 5. Now is the time to register for camps, programs, and activities taking place during these weeks to keep your child active and engaged. In addition, November is the time to register for the upcoming winter & spring sports’ seasons. All the registration periods can be found in the Main Directory (red tab) of the magazine including baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer, softball and more. Enrichment programs and activities are ongoing and include dance, gymnastics, martial arts, golf and tennis, most of which offer school days off and week-long camps, too! In honor of Veterans Day this November, let’s remember to thank all the veterans in our communities for their service. I’d like to thank our issue sponsor Baptist Health that’s located right in Plantation, ready to serve all your family’s healthcare needs. And, thank you to our readers for your continued support and patronage to our clients. Please be sure to let them know you found them in Sports & Activities Directory. I want to wish you and your family the very best this holiday season. Cheers to a happy, healthy new year!

My Best to you! Anina

Dear Cooper City Residents,

The holiday season is right around the corner. We have welcomed many new neighbors to “Someplace Special”, throughout 2023. It is always thrilling to see our newest residents become part of the family fun that’s available in Cooper City, especially during this joyous time of the year. We are in the final quarter of the year which means your City Commission has finalized and approved a new budget. Cooper City’s Budget for the Fiscal Year 2024 was thoroughly analyzed, revised, and balanced by our Commission and staff. We are enhancing our tremendous City services, while approving the lowest total millage rate, of 5.865, since 2012. Numerous capital projects are funded, and the city’s infrastructure is being upgraded thanks, in part, to the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, also known as ARPA. The City Commission also utilized ARPA funding to improve upon public safety, which is our City’s top priority. We recently completed the installation of the License Plate Reader, Cameras and Real Time Crime Center equipment, which makes our law enforcement more robust, in providing better coordination with surrounding municipalities to lower the city’s incidents of criminal activity. Cooper City and the Broward Sheriff’s Office have collaborated to open a state-of-the-art Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). This innovative crime-fighting operations center will use technology to help investigate and aid first responders with calls for service as they happen. The new RTCC will operate 24 hours a day at BSO’s Cooper City district office. This digital information hub provides BSO with direct access to video surveillance systems that are strategically deployed throughout the city to increase the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors, as well as serving as an overall crime deterrent. Additionally, the RTCC will be crucial in addressing traffic management and large-scale community and city events. Since the opening in April, RTCC personnel have been able to successfully assist patrol and investigations on dozens of cases. An ARPA project that is in the finally close out and is being used is the Drainage Improvements for Bill Lips Sports Complex. It is now open and available to the great residents of “Someplace Special.” If you have not visited the Complex, I strongly urge you to drop by and check it out. This is just one of the amenities available to you. There are tennis, basketball, and beach volleyball courts. When you come to visit, ask for Joseph Cabret. Joe, our City’s Recreation Leader, can provide a tour of the facility, explain how to use the fitness equipment and discuss the membership packages. I know fitness goals and New Year’s resolutions go hand in hand, but you do not have to wait until 2024 to get started. I would like to be among the first to recognize and thank our nation’s heroes on this Veterans Day! Cooper City will hold its Veterans Day Ceremony at Memorial Park on Saturday, November 11, at 11:00AM. I began this article by speaking of seeing our newest neighbors engage in the fabric of what makes Cooper City “Someplace Special.” “Light Up Cooper City” is a marquee event that allows all residents to enjoy the unique qualities of our family-centric community. Local businesses and organizations come together, students perform holiday routines on the main stage, activities are held in the Community Center, and Santa Claus arrives just in time to help us celebrate the event. Please mark your calendar and join us on Friday, December 1, at 6:30PM for this incredible event. More information is online at www.CooperCity.gov/Calendar. On a personal note, I am in full support of Israel and denounce the terrorist actions of Hamas. I believe the state of Israel has an absolute right to exist peacefully. It is my privilege to represent and serve the great residents of Cooper City. As always, feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option #6.

Sincerely,

Greg Ross

Mayor of Cooper City

Hello Davie Residents,

12

I hope that students are having an exciting and rewarding start to the school year, and we all appreciate the efforts of our Davie teachers to ensure that academic endeavors are off to an excellent beginning. I can’t believe that the holidays are right around the corner again! The Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has a wide variety of programs, activities, and community special events for both our Davie residents and visitors to enjoy. In early November, we will have a tribute to our servicemen and women, who are true American heroes, at the Town of Davie’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony which takes place at Veterans Park on Saturday, November 11 at 10AM. Since the parking is limited at Veterans Park, a convenient way to attend the event is the shuttle service the Town will be providing back and forth from the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The Town’s annual Holiday Craft Show will take place on November 18 &19 inside the Davie Arena with over 100 local arts and crafts vendors. Admission is free, with additonal activities such as local entertainment, vendor demonstrations, cottage foods, and raffles. On Saturday, December 2, Town Councilmembers, the Vice-Mayor, and I will “flip the switch” during our annual Holiday Lighting of the Greens Event at Bamford Sports Complex. Come join us for a night of fun that will include pictures with Santa, a lighted horse parade, live performances, and youth activities and games. A wide variety of year-round recreational programming is also offered in the Town of Davie, that promotes active lifestyles and the opportunity to learn new life skills. I’d like to take a moment to highlight a few of our unique program offerings this season. You will find all our classes and programs on our website at www.davie-fl.gov. Invest in your wellbeing and become a member of the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center. Membership includes the use of the Olympic-sized swimming pool, as well as, our state-of-the-art fitness equipment including elliptical machines, stationary bikes, strength training equipment and treadmills. Lane reservations are also available for both members and non-members at the Pine Island swimming pool. Arthritis body conditioning is also available at the pool. This class allows you to exercise without putting strain on your joints and muscles. This class is also excellent for beginning or returning exercisers and strengthening for pre-surgery or post-surgery. Is your birthday coming soon, and do you and your family love to swim? If so, host your celebration at the pool. Reservations are available for birthday parties and special events. Don’t forget that the Town of Davie offers year-round swimming lessons, conducted by Town staff with a new session beginning every month. These activities and others are always available at the Davie Pine Island Park pool. When looking through our activities, remember whether its community special events, swimming, fitness, youth sports, or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something to offer everyone in your family. For more information about any Davie program, call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks! Sincerely,

Judy Paul

Dear Plantation Residents,

School is back in session, football is back on television and our city has activities for almost every minute of the day. I’m happy to tell you about the third of those three. We try to balance out options to cover all residents’ tastes. Some like to work up a sweat and compete for every point. Others want to take a deep breath, or better yet, just spectate. And then there are families: We look to provide options from almost the moment a child is born until they head off to college. I’ve lived in Plantation for more than 30 years now, and here are some of my favorites in the coming months: Cooler weather means the return of the Rock the Park series. This year is the fifth go-round for our popular concerts, but there are some changes. The new venue is Pine Island Park, which has expansive parking and a new spacious artificial turf field. We’ll have five Friday night concerts and two on Saturday. We have also added an additional concert. The series now runs from November to May. You can find the schedule and our exciting lineup at www.plantation.org. Join me at It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation Holiday Parade at 9:00AM Saturday, November 18. The parade steps off at Broward Boulevard and NW 46th Avenue and continues all the way to City Hall. I’m happy to reveal that Barbara Simmons, the long-time head of Westside Regional Medical Center, will be our grand marshal. Simmons, who worked her way up from starting as a nurse, is retiring after serving the last eight years as the hospital’s CEO, dedicating about 50 years overall. Simmons has served on the Plantation’s Chamber of Commerce executive board for eight years. She also has volunteered to be part of the city’s Midtown Advisory Board, which offers expertise on how to best develop our Midtown (defined as the area between University Drive and Pine Island Road). The seat at the front of the parade will be a new one for Simmons. She normally oversees the first aid station along Broward Boulevard that keeps parade participants hydrated. Congrats! Watch City Councilmembers and I flip the switch to Light up City Hall for the holidays on December 2. Santa will be there for photos along with local student choirs, craft vendors, arts & crafts, food trucks, and a new addition this year, a synthetic ice rink. What happens in Plantation on Christmas Eve? Santa’s Visit!! Listen for the sirens as Santa makes his way through the city visiting every street in Plantation. This is one of our most loved and oldest traditions. I, myself have been a Santa for many years but now, I like to be an elf. If you are interested in volunteering for this program, please email plantationparks@plantation.org. On Saturday, Jan. 13, we will be holding a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at the Jim Ward Community Center. It’s a wonderful community event to celebrate his life and legacy through inspirational speakers, local performances, family activities and more. We have many exciting things happening in the city and I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to email me at Mayor@Plantation.org. I’m looking forward to seeing you around town this winter. Sincerely,

Nick Sortal

Mayor of Plantation

THE DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA By Dr. David Yudell

P

rotecting children from the potential dangers of the internet and social media has become a main goal of parenting. Here are some strategies parents and caregivers can implement to safeguard children: 1. Open Communication: Establish open and honest communication with your child about social media. Discuss the potential risks and dangers associated with it, such as cyberbullying and online predators. Encourage them to come to you if they encounter any concerning situations or individuals online. Educate about strong passwords (require younger children to give you a copy), not sharing personal information and caution about accepting friend requests. Create an environment where your child feels comfortable coming to you with any concerns or issues they may encounter online (Trust and Support). Assure them that you are there to support and guide them through any challenges they may face. 2. Set Age Restrictions: Many social media platforms have age restrictions for a reason. Ensure that your child is old enough to use a particular platform. Younger children do not have the emotional maturity or understanding to navigate the complexities of social media. Add the concept of Privacy Settings. If they are too young to understand the concept they likely shouldn’t be on the site. 3. Monitor Online Activity: Regularly monitor your child’s online activity. Familiarize yourself with the platforms (imperative for their privacy settings). Consider using parental control software or apps that allow you to track and limit their online interactions.

4. Set Boundaries and Time Limits: Establish clear rules and boundaries regarding social media usage. Set limits on the amount of time your child can spend on social media each day and establish technology-free zones, such as during meals or before bedtime. Encourage them to engage in offline activities and hobbies. 5. Be a Role Model: Children often learn by observing their parents’ behavior. Be a positive role model by demonstrating responsible social media use. Show them how to engage in meaningful conversations, share appropriate content, and respect others’ privacy and boundaries online. 6. Encourage Reporting: Teach your child how to report and block individuals who engage in inappropriate or harmful behavior online. Make sure they understand that it is essential to report any instances of cyberbullying, harassment, or suspicious activity to you or a trusted adult. Teach them about the permanence of digital footprints and the importance of thinking before posting or sharing anything online It is crucial for parents, educators, and society as a whole to be aware of these negative impacts and take steps to mitigate them. Open communication, setting boundaries, and promoting responsible social media use can help protect children from the potential harm associated with excessive social media consumption. If your child periodically ignores or breaks the rules you have created reach out to our office or a qualified child mental health professional for support. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com

irror Lake Elementary Magnet School recently hosted a captivating “Mini Magnet Showcase”, drawing in Pre-K students and their parents for a hands-on educational experience. This event targeted the book “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” with literacy and STEM components. The event, designed to showcase the school’s magnet program, saw a large turnout of parents eager to explore the interactive stations and create memories with their children. The showcase featured a series of hands-on stations where Pre-K students and their parents rotated through various activities, each carefully crafted to stimulate young minds. One standout station was the “Rocket Alphabet”. This STEM center gave students the opportunity to build alphabet rockets using their knowledge of phonics and phonemic awareness. Another highlight was the “Coconuts with Sensory” station, which integrated sensory experiences into literacy components. Here, students were encouraged to touch, feel, and interact with coconuts as they explored the textures and shapes. This hands-on approach not only made learning more enjoyable but also gave students more background knowledge of “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom”.

mazing things are happening at Silver Ridge Elementary this fall! Our food forest continues to grow and soon we will be able harvest the fruits of our labor. We have over fifty (50) food bearing plants including citrus trees, berry trees, spices and legumes. The students watch the garden grow every day during recess. They then learn about the garden and how to care for it in science class. This year we hope to share the produce with our community and should it be enough to do so. We are planning the winter festival which includes a display of the arts at Silver Ridge Elementary. Our students will create and prepare their art projects to be on display at the event and the students in the chorus will entertain the families and children during the festival. Our winter festival is always a standing-room only event and this year should be no different. We are installing breach proof safety film in the vulnerable areas around the front of the school. We are looking for cooperate sponsors

his has been a busy first semester at Peters Elementary! We have had lots of events with even more to come over the next few months. From holidays to fundraising dinners to community events, we’ve done it all! October was full of fun and educational events! Peters Elementary is lucky to have a diverse population that speaks a variety of languages from countries and continents around the world. Parents were able to attend an ESOL Parent Night where they learned about the various programs and resources offered to our families who speak different languages. We also had TWO community events this month! For City Government Day, our very own Plantation city officials visited our school to speak to our 4th and 5th graders. They shared their roles and responsibilities in the city as well as events that are available to our students. We also had our yearly event, Read for the Record. We had many community leaders and business partners spend their morning with us reading books to our pre-k and kindergarten students. Last, but certainly not least, in October we had Trunk-or-Treat Math Night! Partnering with Cypress Bay High School, Peters staff and CBHS students decorated their cars and handed out candy to our spooky students! After loading up on candy, students were

that are interested in assisting to offset the cost of the project. We need just $4,100.00 to complete the project. We are excited to have the film installed as soon as we receive full funding. walk with your dog. A game of pickleball. Hanging some holiday decorations around your front door. For people with orthopedic problems, these everyday tasks can be difficult, if not impossible. And even for the healthiest individuals, a mishap during one of these routine activities can mean a trip to the closest emergency department. Whether you’ve twisted your knee, rolled your ankle or suffer from osteoarthritis, if you have a condition that is causing pain or limited range of motion or you are experiencing any type of musculoskeletal problem that is affecting your quality of life, the experts at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care at Plantation are available. “It’s always our goal to get patients back to the level of activity they once enjoyed, whether that’s playing a sport they love or being able to travel again,” said John Uribe, M.D., chief medical executive for Baptist Health Orthopedic Care. “To do so, we bring a total team approach to care, with specialized orthopedic physicians backed by the most advanced technology and comprehensive rehabilitation programs.” Among the conditions treated are sprains and strains; fractures; torn ligaments and injured tendons; painful or swollen joints in the knee, shoulder and elbow; and a host of injuries and ailments that affect the hands, wrists, feet and ankles. Sophisticated imaging and surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures, and services such as ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma

injections are regularly used by the orthopedic team to treat a variety of problems. From total and partial knee replacements to conditioning programs to help prevent injury, the board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeons and sports medicine physicians at the Plantation location will develop a specific treatment plan for you. That personalized care plan will depend on many factors, such as your age, overall health, lifestyle, the severity of your ailment and how it is affecting your daily activities. “We also work closely with athletes to improve sports performance and return them to action as quickly and safely as possible,” said Dr. Uribe, who is team physician for the Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers, among others. Baptist Health Orthopedic Care at Plantation is staffed by orthopedic sports medicine surgeons Fernando Antonio Moya-Huff, M.D., Ph.D., and William Davis, M.D., hand and upper extremity surgeon Roy Cardoso, M.D., foot and ankle surgeon Cary Chapman, M.D., and hip and knee surgeon Charles Lawrie M.D. They are joined by two primary care sports medicine physicians, Luis Rodriguez, M.D., and Michael Swartzon, M.D., who specialize in the treatment and prevention of illness and injury and often work with athletes to help optimize performance. They maximize non-operative treatment, guide referrals to physical and occupational therapies and, if necessary, expedite an appointment to a surgeon for treatment.

Our physicians participate in research, publishing their outcomes in leading medical journals. In addition, they are teaching the next generation of orthopedic surgeons, preparing them to tackle the most complex orthopedic issues, particularly important as the population ages. And they are also pioneering new techniques, for example the use of 3D printing technology for a better custom joint replacement. “Together, with their knowledge and skill, our compassionate team will put you on the best path forward to healing,” Dr. Uribe said. The doctors agree prevention, of course, is the best medicine, and it’s important to remember that home accidents, including falls from ladders and stools, lawn mower injuries and slips and falls send thousands to hospital emergency departments each year. In addition, everyone should use proper safety equipment when riding bicycles, driving a car and participating in sports, and learn proper techniques for lifting, carrying and bending to avoid back injuries. “Generally, the sooner one seeks care for a problem, the better,” Dr. Uribe said. “Some conditions can worsen over time and if caught earlier could mean that care is less invasive.” Baptist Health Orthopedic Care is located at 1228 South Pine Island Road, Suite 310, in Plantation. Call 833-556-6764 to make an appointment or visit BaptistHealth.net/OrthoPlantation for more information.
