2019 ASF Annual Report

Page 1

MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Readers,

More and more of you are reading our newsletter each year. For us, that’s extremely encouraging! In fact, we are so confident in our potential that this year we decided to openly announce our intentions to expand our activities to all regions of Quebec and to make every effort to reach as many people as possible.

For 25 years now, the Foundation has demonstrated leadership in the field of adaptive alpine skiing. Our mobile unit and wide range of adapted sports activities set us apart. We sincerely believe that we have only scratched the surface of the Foundation’s full potential.

I would like to welcome Martine Marois, our new Sports Program Director, to the team. We are thrilled to have her on board. Martine brings strong leadership skills, an excellent work ethic and an impressive knowledge of sports. She joins our dynamic and ambitious team, and together, we intend to continue setting the Foundation apart and improving the quality of life for people with physical disabilities.

Thank you for your ongoing trust in us – and above all, for believing in our mission.

It is an immense privilege for me to join the team as Sports Program Director during the Adaptive Sports Foundation’s 25th anniversary. I look forward to sharing my experience as a kinesiologist and physiotherapist, as well as a coach in team building and leadership. I also look forward to meeting you at upcoming ASF events.

Steve Charbonneau

WE MOURN THE PASSING OF TOM

It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of Tom Selby, a devoted volunteer who had generously given his time to ASF since 1997. We pay tribute to his kindness and great generosity. He was very passionate and committed to his community and the foundation. We will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with his wife Debbie, his family and friends.

WINTER CAMP FOR INJURED SOLDIERS

This past February 10 to 15, 2019, nearly 30 injured soldiers took part in the ASF’s 10th annual Injured Soldiers Winter Camp. In addition to skiing activities, participants attended conferences and enjoyed musical performances. The camp was held in Bromont and was a resounding success thanks to the collaboration of 35 dedicated volunteers –around 10 of whom were wounded soldiers who had participated in a similar ASF camp in the past. A huge thank you to True Patriot Love for their financial contribution, which allowed us to run a camp of this size.

Skiing to break out of social isolation

A SENSE OF FREEDOM!

This winter, we received a donation from the Foundation Fusée enabling us to purchase a brand-new Snow Kart. Marc-Olivier Savard, who has been an ASF participant for the past 4 years, was the very first person to use it. Thanks to the Snow Kart, Marco was able to ski freely and completely on his own for the first time. He tackled the trails of Owl’s Head right from the summit with just one hand. Way to go, Marco!

«The Snow Kart has completely changed my life. Being able to ski alongside my son and watch him ski all on his own really choked me up. Thank you

- Dominique, Marco’s Mother

SCHOOL OUTINGS

In recent years we have been offering our services to schools so that they can include young people with disabilities on school trips. Unfortunately, many ski hills don’t have the equipment or training to accept this clientele. In most cases, the kids are sent home while their classmates enjoy a fun outing. This sad reality is why we offer our services to schools and ski hills. We also welcome groups of people with disabilities who want to plan a day of skiing. This was the case with the École Internationale du Phare in Sherbrooke, which planned an outing to Owl’s Head this past March.

ADAPTIVE SKIING INITIATION CLINICS

A Mountain filled with joy!

On March 29, 2019, some 30 volunteers headed to Mont-Chantecler in Sainte-Adèle to join up with the good folks of The Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada. The reason? To introduce young people with functional limitations to downhill skiing during the Foundation’s yearly Ski-athon. This year, more than 65 youngsters were able to try adaptive skiing in a single day – an impressive number considering the complex logistics involved in planning a day like this. These young people all attend specialized schools in the greater Montreal area. We are very proud of this success and of our partnership with The Starlight Quebec Children’s Foundation.

Save the date! June 5, 2020, will be our 6th annual Golf Tournament, which will take place once again at the Château Bromont Golf Club.

June 6th was our 5th edition of our annual Golf Tournament. Players teed off under sunny skies at the Château Bromont Golf Club. We would like to thank our very first Honorary President, Mr. Guillaume Ménard of GJ Ménard Landscaping. With his support, we managed a full card with 144 golfers. We are also very proud of the $38,000 that was raised. A huge thank you to all the golfers, volunteers and sponsors who came out to support our cause. The members of the organizing committee who were so generous with their time and energy also deserve a special mention. Thank you for making this tournament another success.

SUMMER PROGRAM «

Meeting a growing demand!

It was another busy summer with over 300 participants and 100 dedicated volunteers. We have all been able to see the impact the ASF has on the lives of participants and their families. Thanks to our “mobile unit”, we are now offering more and more activities accross Quebec. I would like to thank our partners who, like us, believe that everyone deserves an equal chance to participate in sports.

The ASF has seen some remarkable progress over the last five years. This summer, we made a positive difference in the life of more than 300 skiers. The ASF team is extremely proud of this progress and immensely grateful to our volunteers, without whom none of this would be possible.

The ASF has changed my sister’s life. Thanks to the volunteers, I was able to see her eyes sparkle with joy and with a desire to push herself. I will treasure this image for years.

-Joséane, Jacynthe’s sister

WATER SKIING FOR INJURED SOLDIERS

Practising sports despite injuries

Many soldiers with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) isolate themselves. We believe that sports are a wonderful way for them to get out and socialize. Sporting events take them out of their comfort zone and let them see that they’ve reached an important stage in their recovery. We’re proud to help these soldiers to be active and learn new skills through our programs. ASF camps last several days and during this time we can see rapid changes in their behaviour and attitude. In fact, this is usually how we’re able to see just how much of a difference we are making. Sports become an excuse for reconnecting with the outside world. Participants also realize that they’ve been able to overcome some of the fears they had at the program’s outset. For some, this is a huge step.

WE’RE

PROUD

TO BE INCLUSACTIVE!

Inclusion through sports

This year, we wanted to thank our volunteers in an original and unique way because the ASF’s success lies squarely on all their hard work and dedication. For the last 25 years, our model has been 100% based on volunteers, who bring joy to the lives of hundreds of participants. So we decided to be a little creative and coined a new term which reflects what we do. The word “Inclusactive” speaks for itself! After all, we’ve been promoting inclusion through sports since 1994. So this summer, all ASF volunteers received a t-shirt that says: We’re Inclusactive!

The ASF is the only organization that offers a mobile service for teaching and supporting adaptive alpine and water skiing techniques across Quebec. Thanks to its generous donors, the ASF has access to a truck and adapted bus, which allows us to transport the necessary alpine and water skiing equipment. The ASF advantage? We go where people with disabilities are. This eliminates certain barriers such as having to arrange adapted transportation over long distances just to participate in a sporting activity. The ASF is able to offer people alpine skiing and water skiing almost right in their backyard. We essentially travel the roads of Quebec to bring happiness to all regions.

We travel the roads of Quebec

THE DAHÜ PROGRAM

Accessible trails for all!

On July 16, 2019, Bromont announced that it had acquired two Dahüs and in doing so became the first town to offer free universal access to anyone wishing to borrow a Dahü. We plan to continue promoting Dahüs so that more municipal trails and parks can become accessible. We think everyone should be able to enjoy the beauty of nature.

LA GRANDE COULÉE, ORFORD

Reaching new heights!

Talk about a huge success! Some 20 volunteer runners came out to give us a helping hand so that 6 ASF participants could reach the top of Mont Orford during the Grande Coulée that took place on Saturday, September 14, 2019. We’re talking a climb of more than 4 km with a vertical drop of roughly 415 metres!

Robert Frosi and a crew from Radio-Canada ( The french CBC) came to this event and produced a documentary about Steve's involvement and ASF’s mission. This documentary has been viewed more than 365,000 times. We thank them for providing ASF with this exceptional visibility

THE STORY, BEYOND PERFORMANCE

You bring so much happiness to your participants and you infuse me with energy. Thank you for filling everyone’s heart with joy!

ADAPTIVE HORSEBACK RIDING

Try out inclusive activities!

We are extremely pleased to be able to offer, with the assistance of the Jardins d’Éden equestrian centre in Shefford, introduction to horseback riding. The centre has an access ramp and trained staff to ensure the safety of participants. Many ASF volunteers helped by arranging transportation, preparing the BBQ and accompanying participants in the stable. An experience that’s definitely worth redoing!

THE BROMONT ULTRA’s EXPERIENCE

Social inclusion at its peak!

Fifteen people with reduced mobility were able to participate in the Bromont Ultra again this year thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of a hundred or so runners. The Bromont Ultra is run by a non-profit organization that uses this annual race to raise funds for various causes such as the ASF. Although this fundraising event was not designed for people with reduced mobility, for the last five years they have been able to participate thanks to the “Dahü” and the ASF. Last year, we tackled 160 km. This year, we bumped this distance up to 1,878 km – an impressive feat that sets a very high bar for next year’s event!

I strongly recommend the Adaptive Sports Foundation! The volunteers are wonderful, extraordinary people. They give us a chance to smile and hope again. Despite our health restrictions, anything seems possible with the ASF. They are so attentive to our needs. Thank you so very much for being there.

-May Lim, Dahü user

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION NIGHT

Applauding the involvement of people who care!

October 20th was our volunteer appreciation night. It was a chance for us to thank our volunteers and recognize the importance of their involvement with our foundation. This event also allows us to get together and discuss highlights from the past season. It’s well liked by all and creates a sense of belonging to the ASF. In addition to being an enjoyable evening, it enhances the volunteer experience and helps us maintain a very high percentage of volunteer retention.

25 YEARS OF MAKING DREAMS A REALITY

Emeritus Members

Peter M. Treacy

Alex K. Paterson

2019 has marked the Adaptive Sports Foundation's 25th year of serving people with disabilities. In 2018, the ASF Board reflected on the Foundation's 25 years of service to the Eastern Townships and contemplated what more we could do to help people with disabilities and their families.

From this process the vision to bring adaptive sports to people with disabilities across the Province of Quebec was born. We have produced a 5-year Strategic Plan to grow our organization. By 2022, we plan to:

• Make adaptive skiing available to anyone living with physical disabilities throughout the province of Quebec;

• Increase the number of chidren, adult and veteran soldiers with disabilities annually;

• Recruit and train a greater number of volunteers to meet the demand;

• Build new and expand existing partnerships with cities, organizations and schools;

• Grow our Winter and Summer Mobile Unit Program.

To realize these goals, we are working to raise $2.7M over the five year time frame.

With the dedicated support of our donors, Board, volunteers, participants and friends, we have raised over $850,000 this year. We have also begun planning for our Program expansion across the Province and look forward to telling you more about it over the coming years.

Thank you for your donations
