W e’re all breathing a collective sigh of relief as the soaring temperatures and energy sapping humidity of the summer months gives way to the much more pleasant climate of autumn and winter. It’s the perfect time of year to engage in our favourite outdoor pursuits and put all that hard work in the gym to use. The weather is just right for swimming, cycling and running… or if you’re really up for a challenge, you could combine all three, which is exactly what Fitness First COO George Flooks is doing by competing in the Dubai International Triathlon. The race, which takes place at the Atlantis resort on The Palm, involves a 1.9km swim, followed by a 90km bike ride with a nice easy 21.1km run to finish off with. It’s the first half ironman distance triathlon to be held in the UAE and the top man at Fitness First has been in training for months, practicing what he preaches, by getting in tip-top shape for the big race. Golf is back on the agenda in a big way as The European

Tour’s Race to Dubai reaches its climax at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates from November 20-23. The modern game is a much more physical proposition than it was in years gone by and today’s top golfers are athletes. Justin Rose, Europe’s top scorer at The Ryder Cup in September, puts in the hard work in the gym to ensure he’s got the perfect tools for his trade and we bagged an exclusive interview with the Englishman to ask him all about it. Another big event on the sporting horizon is the muchloved Dubai Rugby Sevens taking place at The Sevens stadium from December 4-6 and one of the stars of the show will be 21 year old New Zealand All Black Joe Webber who spoke to us ahead of the tournament us about his love of sevens rugby and talked us through his weekly workout routine. SUPER SPINACH KEEP HEART DISEASE AT BAY WITH THIS WONDER VEG

pinach. It’s a food that we as kids probably tried to avoid at all costs. Yet the health benefits of this super vegetable are countless. It is absolutely jam-packed with nutrients and rightfully carries the reputation of being a food that can help treat many health problems. When it comes to the heart, spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables are great to eat because of their high levels of fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. All these go a long way in reducing the risk of heart disease. One of the biggest risk factors of heart disease is a high level of homocysteine, a non-protein amino acid. Research tells us that eating foods which are high in folic acid helps in reducing homocysteine levels and wouldn’t you know it, spinach is renowned for being rich in folic acid. HOW TO COOK SPINACH?

BOIL IT You can boil spinach with little more than salt and water. Simply place the spinach in a large pot of boiling water and cook for 3-5 minutes.

SAUTÉ IT Heat some olive oil in a small pot and sauté a dash of garlic over medium heat for a minute. Add the spinach along with some salt and pepper and cook for around 2 minutes.

With his evergreen love for spinach, Popeye the Sailor Man helped increase America’s consumption of the vegetable by almost a third.

But why, of all foods, did Popeye choose spinach? The answer lies in a misplaced decimal point. In 1870, the German chemist Erich von Wolf found that spinach had 3.5 milligrams of iron per 100gram serving. But when he was transcribing his notes, von Wolf accidently wrote that it had 35 milligrams per 100-gram serving. That mistake wasn’t corrected for almost 70 years, more than enough time for spinach to enjoy its time in the limelight as a super-food.

esearch has shown that diets which contain cauliflower are closely connected to cancer prevention in several forms of cancer including breast cancer, prostate cancer, and ovarian cancer. The link between this cruciferous vegetable and cancer prevention exists because cauliflower provides special nutrients to the three systems in our body that are most closely

associated with cancer development – the detox system, antioxidant system, and the inflammatory/antiinflammatory system. Cauliflower also contains sulforaphane, a compound that kills cancer stem cells which leads to the stunting of tumor growth. Cauliflower is clever too, with the high amount of choline in it making it a good food to eat if you’re looking to boost your brain health.

AROUND 14 MILLION MAJOR MEDICAL CONDITIONS CAUSED DUE TO SMOKING We knew smoking was bad, but we didn’t know it was this bad. A new study published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that around 14 million major medical conditions suffered by American adults are caused by smoking. The figure is much larger than what health experts had previously reported.

WHY PIZZA IS SO GOOD Through a three-minute video, The American Chemical Society has explained what it is about pizza that makes it so darn good. The Maillard Reaction takes place when the pizza is in the oven, causing the browning of the ingredients and the releasing of a cocktail of compounds which give pizza its unique taste. But keep those toppings healthy folks and go easy on the cheesy!

PLANK AWAY Although most people can’t hold a plank for more than 30 second on their first attempt, the motivation of getting rock solid abs should be enough to get you back into it because that’s what you’ll get out of a good plank. The plank also builds strength in the shoulders, arms, glutes and core, making it a holistic exercise that offers a lot. 2014 RECORD: 4 hours and 26 minute. That’s how long Mae Weidong, a policeman from China, held the plank position to set the current world record. The previous record was held by American ultra-athlete George Hood who held the position for 3 hours and 7 minutes in 2013.


We know that there are more sheep than people in New Zealand, but did you know that there are considerably more bicycles in Copenhagen than people? A recent statistic shows that more than 50% of people in the Danish city commute to work and school on bicycles. There are also five times as many bicycles as there are cars. In fact, there are so many bikers in the city that earlier this year a new two-lane bicycle-only bridge was opened over’s Copenhagen’s’ harbour. The bridge is affectionately called ‘Cykelslange,’ or the ‘Cycle Snake.’ But… parking all those bikes has turned into a massive headache for both bike-owners and cycle-less residents. Bikes are routinely dumped outside train stations and on the middle of sidewalks, making them not only an eyesore, but also a nuisance. SOLUTION

CARBS, CARBS, CARBS Before your workout, you want to eat foods that will give you a mix of complex and simple carbohydrates. This will ensure that the release of energy during your workout is steady. Great options: Wholemeal bread and fruits.

POTASSIUM When you sweat (which you really should be doing when you work out!), your potassium levels plummet. Replenish those levels before you work out by eating foods rich in potassium like bananas and nuts.

POST-GYM The food you eat after your work out could well be the most important food you eat all day. After the gym, there are two things you’re trying to do - promote muscle growth and aid in their recovery. Carbohydrates and proteins are what you need to facilitate this. Fruits are a great option but for a truly royal treat, give Greek Yoghurt a shot – it’s rich in carbohydrates and packs double the amount of protein than regular yogurt.

FRUIT INFUSED WATER Lately, it seems like people can’t get enough of fruit infused water. This refreshing drink is a great alternative to soda and other sugary beverages. Here are four fruits that you want to include in your fruit-infused H20!

ORANGES Apart from being absolutely jam-packed with vitamin C, oranges are also rich in fibre, folate, calcium and vitamin A. Did you know that a whole orange contains only about 85 calories and has no fat?

CHEMICAL DERIVED FROM BROCCOLI SPROUTS COULD HOLD KEY IN TREATING AUTISM

SCIENTISTS TAKE BIG STEP IN FINDING CURE TO DIABETES 1 Scientists at Harvard University have successfully transformed stem cells into insulin-producing beta cells, a result that is being hailed as a huge step forward to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. THE RESEARCH:

Professor Doug Melton and his team discovered the perfect mix of chemicals to transform embryonic stem cells into fully-functioning beta cells. The body contains beta cells that pump out insulin, a hormone that controls our blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system begins destroying these cells, leaving no way for the body to regulate its blood sugar levels. “It was gratifying to know that we could do something that we always thought was possible,” said Prof. Melton, whose son and daughter have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. “We are now just one pre-clinical step away from the finish line.” Prof. Melton and his team created hundreds of millions of beta cells which they found produce insulin and controlled the blood sugar levels in mice for several months. While the discovery isn’t a cure yet, further research is still being done to develop the study, which is being called a ‘game-changer’ by health experts.

A joint study by the MassGeneral Hospital for Children and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has found that using a chemical derived from broccoli sprouts might be a big step in treating autism. The study used the chemical sulforaphane, which has previously been shown to possess anticancer properties, to treat 40 teenage boys and young men aged between 13 and 27 who had moderate to severe autism. The study, which was published online in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that a majority of the test patients who received a daily dose of the chemical showed significant improvements in social and verbal interaction. They also displayed decreased ritualistic behavior and repetition, common symptoms of autism. Experts say that while the find is not a victory against autism, it is a step in the right direction to treating symptoms through their cellular roots.

Sulforaphane is rich in cruciferous vegetables like Brussel sprouts, cabbage and broccoli. In 1992, sulforaphone was found to boost the body’s natural resistance to DNA damage, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

ENTEROVIRUSD68 While the Ebola virus has grabbed most of the headlines in the world of health, the recent outbreak of another virus has health experts worried.

Enterovirus D68 is a respiratory virus that mainly affects children. North America has seen a violent outbreak over the last couple of months with four deaths linked to the virus so far. How it spreads. The virus spreads like the common cold, through coughs, sneezes and contaminated surfaces.

While reports of enterovirus D68 have been received fairly regularly since 1987, the last decade has seen a clear increase in the scale and symptoms of the virus. Although more than 120 different types of enteroviruses have been identified by scientists, relatively little is known about enterovirus D68.

n the past two years English golfer Justin Rose has blossomed into the world-beater everyone predicted he would become when he first burst into the limelight as a wiry 17-year-old by audaciously chipping in on the 18th at Royal Birkdale to take fourth place in The Open Championship while still an amateur. He turned pro the day after that extraordinary feat but struggled with the step up in standard to The European Tour and missed his first 21 cuts in a row! He eventually settled into life on Tour and won his first title in 2002 before adding another three wins over the next five years. But for a player of his undeniable talent, Rose was always thought to have underachieved. But a new approach to the game – including a greatly increased focus on strength and conditioning has helped him grown into one of the fiercest competitors in the world. Victory in the World Golf

Championships-Cadillac Championship in 2012 kick-started the meteoric rise. He went on to play a starring role in that year’s Miracle at Medinah, when the European Ryder Cup team overturned a 10-6 deficit in the final day singles to win 14.5-13.5. Rose’s victory over American superstar Phil Mickeslon provided one of the standout moments from the tournament. But it was in 2013 that he really announcement himself at the top table of golf when he again outdid Mickelson, and Jason Day, by two strokes to win his first Major championship at the US Open – the first Englishman to win a Major for 17 years. By the time this year’s Ryder Cup at Gleneagles came around Rose was rightly one of the most feared members of the European Team and he lived up to his burgeoning reputation in style, emerging unbeaten as Europe’s top scorer with four points from a possible five as Paul McGinley’s team triumphed 16.5-11.5 over the Americans.

Lots of factors have contributed to Rose’s jaw dropping progression in recent years – experience, maturity, mental approach, confidence. But the man himself claims that his greatly improved physical condition has been a key factor in his success.

JUSTIN ROSE HITS A BALL OFF THE WING OF A BA 747 It’s not every day you see a golfer trying to hit a metal gong from the wing of a Boeing 747. That’s exactly what Justin Rose did at a fundraising event for the Kate and Justin Rose Foundation at Heathrow Airport in October. The Ryder Cup star was joined by model Jodie Kidd and football stars Gary Lineker, Jamie Redknapp and Ian Wright as they attempted to hit a gong from 165 metres away.

SFME: How important is fitness in the modern world of professional golf? JUSTIN ROSE: Fitness is a vital component to my regime. My time in the gym has helped with extending my season and producing more consistent results throughout the year. The modern game’s emphasis on length has also made the gym that much more important to a proper practice routine. SFME: Has an increase in competition meant that more players have had to begin looking to the gym to gain an edge? JR: If you want to be the best there’s no way you get away with not being an athlete these days. You have to be working out in the gym otherwise someone else is – someone else is putting in more work than you are. Someone else has got a whole set of advantages and a whole set of skills that you don’t have. So to be the best player in the world there’s no doubt that you have to be an athlete. You can rely on talent, and talent will get you so far. You can have a pretty nice career and really not work too hard, if you’re one of the lucky few that can do that. But you’re going to be there at the end of your career and think ‘what if I’d worked out – what if I’d just pushed myself that little bit harder. SFME: How many times a week do you visit the gym and how long do you train for? JR: My time in the gym is more about quality than quantity. My training sessions last roughly 45 minutes at a time. On an off week, I’m typically training four to five days in the gym, giving my body the proper resting periods to recover. SFME: Does the work you do in the gym relate to the golf swing – do you tailor the work to the swing? JR: Absolutely – rotational and core exercises help reinforce the work I do on my golf swing when in the gym. I’ve also focused on explosive movements which translate to more solid, consistent ball striking.

Each programme I do is designed around Stability, Strength and Power. You need to have the right foundations and everyday I remind myself of that. SFME: What about nutrition, do you generally follow a healthy eating plan? JR: Nutrition is part of a balanced fitness programme. I eat nutritious meals both on and off the golf course. This helps maintain a focused mind and energy levels while competing on the course. SFME: Is it tough juggling the time demands of being a professional golfer? JR: I think it’s tough to be a world-class professional golfer and have balance in your life. That to me is a challenge – to put in all the time and effort that is required to be the best and yet keep a balanced and happy family life where you’re giving quality time to everybody around you. Time management is probably the biggest thing that I struggle with. SFME: After the 18 months you’ve had, how nice would it be to wrap it up with a victory at the DP World Tour Championship? JR: Ending a season with a victory is always a great way to cap a year off – especially when you’re faced with one of the best fields of the year. With the top 60 performers in The Race to Dubai, you know you’re facing a strong field. To win with such a quality field is certainly a great way to build momentum in to the off-season. SFME: All 12 members of Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team will be at Jumeirah Golf Estates for the event – how much of a coup is that for the tournament? JR: I think it’ll be great for The European Tour and the event. The Ryder Cup is huge for The European Tour. It’s been the foundation of the Tour for the last 20 years and it’s been really important in its growth during that period. For us all to be there fir the Tour’s end of season event in Dubai would be a nice way for us all to celebrate the victory again.

GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH The best golfers in the world will once again descend upon Dubai as The European Tour’s grand season finale is all set to take place at Jumeriah Golf Estates’ Earth course in November. WEBBER TARGETS SEVENS GLORY

O

NE of the biggest sporting occasions of the year is set to take place from December 4-7 when the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens once again gets underway. The Sevens stadium has established itself as the home of rugby in the Middle East and the fast paced, high scoring nature of the sevens format makes for captivating viewing and a great day out for friends and family. While spectators will be having a whale of time enjoying this festival of rugby, the serious business will be taking place down on the pitch as the players compete for one of the most coveted titles in the game. One team desperate to get their hands on the trophy is New Zealand. They’ve won it a record five times, including three in a row between the inaugural event in 1999 and 2002, but haven’t won since 2009. SFME caught up with one of the young stars of the New Zealand Sevens team, 21-year-old Joe Webber, to discuss the event and his life as one of the game’s top talents. SFME: Are you looking forward to playing in Dubai and what are you most looking forward to? Joe Webber: I’ve played there twice, were knocked out by eventual winners Fiji last year and we haven’t won in a while so I’m really looking forward to giving it a good go this year. I want to go back to the markets and do four wheel driving again. That was very cool last year in the dunes. Wicked. Also, my sister is hopefully playing there with the New Zealand Women’s Sevens so we could be playing our first tournament together. That would be fantastic. SFME: Although you’re only 21 you’ve had a lot of experience in the game playing for Waikato and the All Blacks Sevens and at representative level for the past four years – what are your ultimate ambitions in the game? JW: I want to win gold in Rio and maybe try for Super Rugby – I want to do my best and see where it takes me.

SFME: Your sevens coach, Titch Tietjens, says you are one of the most talented and powerful young players in sevens and that he is expecting big things from you this season – do you see this as an opportunity to show just how good you are when you turn out in Dubai? JW: In the recent Gold Coast tournament I had limited time with the team, so I am looking forward to spending more time and being better prepared, assuming Titch picks me of course! SFME: You played seven tournaments in the 2011/2012 season and you were in the All Blacks Sevens squad that finished second to South Africa in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games – what has been your most memorable tournament so far? JW: I really liked running out on the pitch in Hong Kong, when I played there for the first time in 2012. The crowds were huge, the atmosphere was fantastic. It’s one of the great places for sevens so it was an amazing experience. SFME: Your sister, Jordan, plays for the New Zealand women’s sevens team – is this something that runs in the family? JW: Dad played a bit of rugby, we always played sport as kids, and we played hard. Jordan and I both loved playing touch so we transferred skills from touch to rugby and just took it from there. SFME: Do you prefer to play sevens than 15-a-side rugby and, if so, why? JW: I enjoy sevens more, because there is more room on the field and you get the ball a lot more. SFME: The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament has become one of the most popular sporting occasions in the Middle East that draws huge crowds of spectators from a wide variety of nations and there is always a vociferous army of Kiwis in the crowd – are you looking forward to playing in front of such enthusiastic spectators? JW: There are a lot of Kiwis there so it’s great to see them and it gives us a real lift. SFME: Who will be the main danger teams in Dubai and how confident are you of New Zealand’s chances? Joe Webber: Fiji, given their form in winning the Gold Coast event, and England are always tough if they get the crowd behind them. SFME: What do you think it is about sevens rugby that is making it a more and more popular and entertaining spectacle year on year – is it the speed and power of sevens? JW: Sevens is very exciting to watch, the games are not as long and can turn around at any time and given the party crowd, it all makes for a fun experience for fans. SFME: Being an outstanding sevens player do you also consider yourself as good a 15-a-side player who could play both codes for New Zealand? JW: Being an outside back, it makes it a lot easier to transition to 15s so I’m happy adapting to both forms of the game, but sevens is my preference. SFME: What is it about New Zealand that generation after generation the country produces such outstanding, world-class rugby players? JW: We all live and breathe rugby from a young age. It’s every kid’s dream to do well at rugby and that has obviously helped us produce great players.

WEBBER ON FITNESS To make a good sevens player you need to have a high anaerobic fitness to go hard over a short period of time so that means doing repeated speed work. WORKOUT: We train four to five times a week – at least an hour minimum. In the gym we work on powerful fast movements – squats, box jumping, pulling sleds. Also I would do four running sessions as well. Two would be speed sessions, two fitness sessions. Each of these would be 45 minutes to an hour.

DIET: We need to eat the right things at the right time and be consistent. We stay off fried foods, only boiled food, lots of greens, chicken, fish, no sweets. It’s a very healthy, balanced diet. Titch insists on it and it works.

“You need to have a clear purpose and be able to train by yourself. It’s a big challenge with sevens as you don’t train so often with other team members, so I need to be really disciplined to do much of my work on my own. The thing is to have a goal and go for it. That’s what has helped me stay on top of my game.” – Joe Webber

The clean and press is a weight training exercise, and was part of the sport of weight lifting in the Olympics until 1972, when it was removed due to difficulties in judging proper technique. The clean and press technique consists of the two main movements:

CLEAN PHASE Starting position – Shoulder-width stance, with knees inside the arms. Establish a flat back posture, bend at the knees and hips so that you can grab the bar with the arms fully extended and a pronated grip that is slightly wider than shoulder width. Point the elbows out to sides. The bar should be close to the shins. Position the shoulders over or slightly ahead of the bar. Begin to pull the bar by extending the knees. Move your hips forward and raise the shoulders at the same rate while keeping the angle of the back constant; continue to lift the bar straight up while keeping it close to your body.

As the bar passes the knee, extend at the ankles, knees, and hips forcefully, similar to a jumping motion ( Triple Extension). The bar should travel close to your body, and you should keep your elbows out as you use the momentum from that movement to pull under the bar by violently shrugging and dropping into a dip position and spinning the hands around the bar as the arms are brought up with the elbows extended in front of the chest so the bar may now lay across or “rest” across the palms, the front of the shoulder or deltoid muscles, and the clavicles (Rack Position).

PRESS PHASE Stand to full height, holding the bar in the rack position. Then dip in the knees slightly and then spring up with your legs and back, pressing upwards towards the ceiling . From there, the lifter would stand erect with the weight locked out at arms’ length overhead. All of this is done within a matter of a couple seconds. Without moving the feet, lower the bar under control and repeat.

aving spent over 11 years in the personal training industry, I have seen my fair share of training clients who all have varying levels of motivation and adherence to their fat-loss goals. I have, however, observed a strange common denominator with all of them – once they complete a given workout they all have still have that bit of energy left in the tank. Some deny this stored energy exists but, similar to a wounded tiger being at its deadliest when it’s on its last legs, people have the strange ability to perform at their very hardest when they know that they are on the last part of the routine. At the end of a workout some people proudly strut around victoriously, whereas others will sit quietly satisfied with the fact that they managed to get through the session. Both scenarios bode well with me, as I never want my clients to feel over-encumbered with my workouts and I want them to feel a sense of achievement. However I have facilitated fantastic fat-loss results for them by throwing in a really tough metabolic-‘finisher’ to cap off the workout. THE FINISHER WORKOUT The purpose of the finisher is threefold: to ‘doublecheck’ that you have emptied all of the tanks, to raise post workout metabolism and to ensure that the workout hasn’t been in vain for the goal of fat loss. When I am contemplating a workout-finisher scenario, my thought process is to consider the energy systems at play. Simply put, once glycogen (stored carbohydrate) is depleted, this is the perfect opportunity to more effectively utilize the next available substrate which is stored fat. This can be done very well via a 3 – 5 minute anaerobic ‘bolt-on,’ otherwise known as a ‘finisher’. SELF CHECK: If the workout itself is very demanding and you are sufficiently depleted or think yourself a novice, then I would consider a finisher to be surplus to requirements. Sadly however, many people who have plenty of energy left in the tank finish their workout without taking full advantage of this window of fat burning opportunity.

I strongly advocate for relatively experienced exercisers (not for absolute beginners) to finish the session off with one of the following workout finishers. FINISHER 1

‘TABATTA CROSS TRAINER SPRINTS’ Warm up for two minutes at a moderate pace and then for the next four minutes alternate between maximum speed for 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of slow recovery pace. Choose your resistance level to allow for a smooth, yet resisted sprint. This should not be too slow and heavy, but a short and effective routine that leaves no stone un-turned if carried out properly. FINISHER 2

‘THE GREAT ESCAPE’ Towel-Prowler-Sprint (30 metres) / Motorbike Split Snatch Jumps (8 reps per side) – Rotate between both without rest 3 to 5 times for the desired effect This finisher encompasses all aspects of a typical Steve McQueen-esque prison escape attempt. Just for the record, I am by no means hinting that our personal training is akin to being imprisoned! Here you will be pushing a makeshift mine cart (Towel-Prowler-Sprints) at break neck speeds in a prone position for about 30 metres followed by explosive Motorbike Split Snatch jumps. Both sets of exercises have to be alternately repeated 3 to 5 times.

A great variation of the traditional Bicep Curl, the Hammer Curl places increased tension on the inner forearm and outer head of the bicep. To carry out the exercise, hold your dumbbells with the palms facing in and then contract the bicep to raise the dumbbell until it reaches your shoulder. Have your elbows tucked in underneath and make your back remains straight throughout the workout. You can also perform Hammer Curls while sitting down on a bench.

Using a barbell is a good idea for beginners, as it allows you to lift an increased load with more control and gets a real pump on those biceps. This is because the tension is distributed across both arms simultaneously. Standing with the barbell at a shoulder-width grip, curl it towards your chest without moving your upper arms. Aim to keep the elbows fixed and tight in towards your torso so that only the forearms are moving in both the lifting and lowering phase.

Dips provide a focused workout on the triceps, with additional emphasis on the shoulders. To perform dips you will need to use a ‘Dip Bar’ which is sometimes integrated into a pull-up frame. Start with both arms fully extended on the bars, with your legs crossed over. Lower yourself down until a 90 degree angle is formed at the elbow point (between the upper-arm and forearm). Push yourself back to the starting position and reset, keeping your torso and back straight.

CONCENTRATION CURLS These curls hit the biceps hard. Sit down on a flat bench and have the dumbbell in-between your legs. From here, the back of the lifting arm will rest on the thigh of the same side leg. This eliminates any forced momentum or jerking movements that would make the curl easier. Simply curl the weight up to your shoulder and back down again. You will find this tougher than a regular curl, so you may not be able to do as many reps as you expected.

LIES WE NEEDTO STOP TELLING OURSELVES. Self-delusion is something we all do. And it’s not always a bad thing as it can help us cope with some of life’s truly challenging and trying times by convincing us to press on, even when facing odds. However, when we do this with physical activity and nutrition, we can unknowingly erode our health. Here are two health lies many of us tell ourselves to feel better, but we are likely doing ourselves more harm than good.

I worked out really hard. You may have, but it’s more than likely you haven’t. And even if you did, you believe you worked out harder than you really did. In Kidding Ourselves, Pulitzer-winning writer Joseph Hallinan notes research where people fitted with accelerometers found out that both men and women dramatically overestimate the amount of exercise they get. There are two downsides to this. First, you fail to derive the health benefits of the more challenging workout you believe you had. Second, and more powerfully, this often leads to nutrition choices to reward ourselves for the effort. Unfortunately, giving ourselves a free pass to poor food choices after “deserving” a treat because we exercised means we will be more likely to make a far worse choice due to a phenomenon called “moral licensing.” When you do something good, you feel good about yourself. This means you’re more likely to trust your impulses, which often means giving yourself permission to do something bad. The worst part of moral licensing is not just its questionable logic; the problem is how it tricks us into acting against our own best interests. It convinces us that self-sabotaging behavior is a well-

earned ‘treat.’ This is an incredibly powerful trick of a mind that turns you want into should.” Interestingly, a truly hard workout is a physical challenge to the body that actually warrants better nutrition, not worse, to provide the proper nutrients to recover from the workout.

Everything in moderation. The idea of “everything in moderation” is delusional because of how people define “moderation.” Having any type of junk food once a day isn’t moderation. That’s a habit and a lifestyle. The other flaw is in people who eat ice cream once a week, but also eat a doughnut once a week and fries once a week, etc. Because each item is eaten once a week, they interpret this as moderation. Nope. Think of it like this: Food is like a world in which there are no superheroes, just a lot of very good but ordinary people, but a lot of supervillains as well. It takes a lot of work and time by a lot of good, ordinary people to fight the destruction caused by just a few supervillains. The major problem is that there are all kinds of weird “food” products (they might be edible, but they aren’t really food) with distorted chemicals, sugars and fats that can disrupt your physiology. And the resulting dietary imbalances rapidly generate inflammation and a kind of hormonal static that can take weeks or months to clear.

Richard Bevan visits Ascot in the south of England to follow in the footsteps of the legends of golf with a round at the famous Wentworth Club and a two-night stay at the exquisite Coworth Park, situated a mere pitching wedge from the illustrious venue.

o there we were, beavering away as usual at SFME Towers when the phone rang. It was the British Airways press office, inviting us to the UK on a golfing trip… during The Ryder Cup. After thinking about it for about the same amount of time as it took the champagne corks to start flying following Jamie Donaldson’s pitch perfect wedge shot into the 15th to claim The Ryder Cup for Europe, we, of course, signed on the dotted line. After relaxing with complementary drinks and food in the Club World Lounge at Emirates Airport we flew overnight to London Heathrow. Fully reclining comfortable seats on the Club World Sleeper Service made it easy to get some shut eye and we arrived in London relatively fresh and just about ready for action. COWORTH PARK Any lingering grogginess vanished immediately as we

drove into the grounds of our home for the next couple of days – Coworth Park in Ascot. The property is set in a stunning quintessentially English country estate, complete with extensive woodland, polo grounds and a croquet lawn! The hotel itself is housed in a stunning Georgian manor and decked out in smoked oak flooring and exquisitely crafted bespoke furniture with individually designed bedrooms – all large with everything you could wish for, for a comfortable stay. My room even had a television that emerged from the end of the bed by remote control, not to mention one of the largest showers I’ve ever seen! With some free time to relax and explore I headed straight for the Spa. It took me a while to find it as it has been sympathetically designed in keeping with the breathtaking natural landscape and is built into the hillside with a grass covered roof. gym, café, and eight treatment rooms where a whole range of therapies and treatments can be enjoyed. I simply wanted a dip in the pool after a long journey and what a pool it is – 18 metres long and 7.5 metres widw with a surrounding sun terrace and steam room. But the piece de resistance is the tranquil underwater music that can only be heard when you dip your head under the water! The food in the restaurant was to die for. Local British produce cooked with a modern twist and served in a dining room that exudes sheer elegance! I could have quite happily stayed within the confines of the hotel for the entire visit but this trip was all about golf and one of the key benefits of staying at Coworth Park is that not only is it a mere 5-minutes from Wentworth, one of the most famous and prestigious golfing venues in England, guests are also given preferential rates and are granted access to play the two 18-hole courses or the 9-hole par three course without paying membership fees. We rose with the lark for an early morning round on the famous West Course, home to The European Tour’s flagship BMW PGA Championship and a track that has been graced by the likes of Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Ernie Els, Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood. Sadly my game didn’t come within a country mile of the standard of the aforementioned golfing glitterati but what a thrill it was to walk the lush tree-lined fairways of this hallowed ground as the early morning sun rose over Ascot. The West Course really does offer golf a world-class test of golf and it is as punishing as it is beautiful. Lightening quick greens, with befuddling undulations, treacherous run off areas and terrifyingly deep bunkers, combined with narrow fairways, tricky rough and huge amounts of woodland to lose your ball in mean this is a course where accuracy is at a huge premium. As golfing experiences go they don’t come much better than a round at Wentworth though and this was up there on my top 10 bucket list of ‘must play’ courses – just as it is for most people. Our day was finished off in fitting style by watching the drama of final day of The Ryder Cup unfold in Wentworth’s ‘Ryder Cup Room’ where iconic images and signed memorabilia adorn every wall. Another European victory in the bag and some unforgettable memories to cherish – what more could we ask for as we headed back to Heathrow for our flights home a very contented group of journalists.

FITNESS FIRST COO SET FOR ULTIMATE CHALLENGE GEORGE Flooks, the COO of Fitness First, will be competing in the 2014 Dubai International Triathlon on November 7 at the Atlantis Resort on The Palm. The event will be the first half iron distance triathlon (113 km) to be held in the UAE and will feature a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike and a 21.1 km run. SFME caught up with George as he finalised his preparations for the event.

SFME: What made you want to enter the Dubai International Triathlon in the first place? George Flooks: It’s just a really tough, challenging event. It tests your fitness levels across three different disciplines plus it forces you to train your endurance levels. I just turned 49 and there are number of things personally that I want to achieve before they might get too difficult, this was one of them. SFME: What is your target for the event? GF: I’m just looking to finish in the allocated time and to get a half ironman medal. After the event, I plan on doing Olympic distance triathlons. SFME: What have your preparations been like for the big day? GF: The hardest thing has been giving up coffee! I have been working with an expert nutritionist and that has helped me a lot. He has put me on a very strict nutritional eating plan. He advised me to lose 12 kg of body fat before the event as this would benefit the running and biking because you need to be lean and light. I lost 6 kg in the first month while gaining 1 kg of muscle mass. The nutritional plan for the initial six weeks focused on no sugar intake, very low carbs, and high protein. After the first six weeks, he instructed me to in increase my intake of clean carbs like sweet potatoes, oats, and brown rice. My mantra is to train hard and eat clean and I can safely say that I have never felt better. My energy levels have shot up and I feel more alert. In the days that I don’t train, I am yawning and feel I have a lack of energy by 11am.

SFME: How do you combine a full time job with your training schedule? GF: I’m also married with two kids. I wake up at 4am, ride from Al Qudra at 5am when it’s still dark and do 100 km on my bike. Alternatively, I will go swimming or do a long distance run before coming to the office and starting a full work day. I also combine this with overseas travel and doing some pick-ups for my kids at the Horse Riding or Jujitsu Schools. That’s not easy, but if you have a goal and you’re committed to do it, then you do it. There’s no better feeling than achieving your fitness goals and knowing that you’re fit and healthy. There’s also no better example to your children than showing that being fit and healthy is a lifestyle, and this type of discipline will develop characteristics that will benefit you in your future, especially in business. SFME: Would you say there is a link between training and success in the corporate world? GF: Absolutely. What makes you successful in the fitness and sport world are the same values that make you successful in the corporate world. Everything is a choice and sometimes you make scarifies but nothing happens without dedication and discipline. You have to commit to a goal, and you have to be motivated to go after it. Those values, regardless of industry or environment, will always help you achieve success. This discipline and dedication will always give you ‘edge’ in the corporate environment. SFME: Did you join any training teams to prepare for the event? GF: I am currently training with the Tri Wings team who have been a fantastic help and support, especially in developing my swimming technique and keeping me focused on the programme. They also encourage me to run after cycling 100K which is very hard! On race day you have to be in your own zone and have mental strength to get through difficult stages racing against yourself and your own personal goal. Training with Tri Wings in a team environment has pushed me further. SFME: What is one motivational tip you would give to our readers? GF: Stop talking about it and just get on and do it! Everyone talks about wanting to enter the 10 km, or to enter the Dubai Fitness Championship or ride in the Spinney’s 92 Cycle race’. It’s time to we stop talking and just do it.

SFME: Tell us what it’s like being a brand ambassador for Fitness First? LM: I’ve been training with XFit for just over a year now and I feel very privileged being a brand ambassador. The team really look up to me and I get a lot of staff coming to me asking me how do I keep in shape, what do I do, what sort of routines do I do and I’m always giving out suggestions and tips to the team. Fitness is what we do so it’s good to actually live the product and pass that information on especially to the team but also to the members who are using the facility as well. It’s tons of fun and I enjoy it. It’s great to have such a good facility to train either before or after work so it’s nice to have that privilege.

SFME: You took part in the Dubai Fitness Championships in October – how did it go? LM: Yes, we just had the Dubai Fitness Championships and we trained for a good long year for it. The previous year was hard work as well. My positioning was 14th this year, probably not as good as I would have liked to have been but it worked out okay. It was over two weekends and it was mentally very hard work. Physically, we prepared as much as we could for the event, but the mental strain of dealing with the pressure and stress was tough. But once you go through that you think you can pretty much go through everything. We completed two workouts each day for three days consecutively, for two weekends in a row. The workouts included exercises like Farmers Walks, pullups, One Rep Max of Clean and Jerk, running, giant box jumps, Kettlebell thrusters, rowing and many more. The competition tested all areas of fitness and really put your ability and mental capability to the test, but I thoroughly enjoyed taking part and will be training hard for the next event.

EMIRATI INSTAGRAM STAR TAKING FITNESS FIRST BY STORM With more than 127,000 followers on Instagram, Walid Yari is one the region’s biggest online fitness celebrities. The Emirati, who specialises in freestyle training, was recently named as a Fitness First Brand Ambassador. SFME caught up with Walid at Fitness First’s Oasis Centre club. SFME: Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became a Fitness First Brand Ambassador. Walid Yari: I started getting into fitness when I was 17-years-old and in the beginning it was tough to believe in myself and follow my dream. To get my name out there, I opened up accounts on lots of social networking sites like Instagram and Twitter. And from all the hard work I received an email from Fitness First asking me if I would like to be a brand ambassador. It was a difficult decision for me because I knew it would be a challenge. In the end I accepted because I wanted to represent how fitness has to be – it’s challenging and it allows you to achieve things that you cannot even imagine you’ll achieve. SFME: What is freestyle function training all about and how did you get into it? WY: I started off as a body-builder but then when I began browsing websites and meeting people who were doing freestyle workouts like XFit,

catharsis and yoga, I realised that fitness is not only about body-building. I thought to myself – let me try doing something different and that’s when I began doing freestyle workout. It’s all about strength and how you can balance your body and how you can manage to breathe while you are doing a particular movement without falling down. SFME: You’re very committed to what you do – what tips or motivational advice could you give to our readers and Fitness First members? WY: If you want to achieve something you have to get rid of all the negative people around you because they are like anchors who keep you down. You need to keep moving. Put what you want to do in your mind, think about how you’re going to achieve it, then start – just do it! Even if you fall again and again, it’s fine because we’re all human. The important thing is to keep going and never give up.

eating habits left me looking like a bloated hippo. I was unhappy, tired and bewildered as to how to regain my ‘joie de vivre’. H aving never joined a gym before, I reluctantly joined Fitness First, fearful that I’d look foolish amongst the beautiful people of Dubai and that my self-esteem would fall even lower. I could not have been more wrong. Fitness First has not only instructed me how to transform my body shape, but also my entire outlook on health and fitness. Most importantly for me, my mental health has vastly improved. I read somewhere that exercise is the most under used anti-depressant. I can say without doubt that it’s true! Fitness First is a welcoming, encouraging and sociable gym. There is no magic ‘quick fix’ solution and I know I’ve had to work hard, but the classes are fun, the atmosphere is always buzzing, and the staff are highly trained and super motivational. A special mention to Kamal who kicked my butt so often he left a footprint! I love Fitness First. Thank you.
