Sporting Kansas City (0-1-1, 1 pt.) returns to action this weekend when the team hosts high-flying San Diego FC (2-0-0, 6 pts.) at Sporting Park on Saturday night. While Sporting picked up their first point under new head coach Raphael Wicky this past weekend with a 2-2 draw against the Columbus Crew, San Diego has gotten off to a roaring start in 2026 - comfortably beating CF Montreal 5-0 and St. Louis 2-0 in their opening pair of matches this season. In addition, San Diego has advanced to the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 after beating Liga MX giants Pumas UNAM in Round One 4-2 on aggregate.
Sporting hosted then-expansion team San Diego for the first time on Aug. 9, 2025 at Sporting Park, falling to a 2-0 defeat. Despite remaining competitive for much of the contest, SDFC stars Chucky Lozano and Anders Dreyer made the difference with goals either side of halftime.
Sporting visited San Diego in the inaugural matchup between the two sides on May 17, 2025, playing out a 0-0 draw at Snapdragon Stadium. The respective defenses dominated the match, with Sporting almost nicking three points when Shapi Suleymanov struck the underside of the crossbar in the second half.

LOOKING FOR FIRST WIN OF 2026
Sporting Kansas City will look to build on the positives from last weekend’s 2-2 home draw with the Columbus Crew when the team hosts top-of-the-table San Diego FC at Sporting Park on Saturday night. Sporting picked up their first point of the campaign with the draw, while San Diego has comfortably won both of their opening matches this season with 5-0 and 2-0 home victories over CF Montreal and St. Louis.
While there were plenty of positives from Saturday’s draw with Columbus, highlighted by a brace from captain Dejan Joveljic and a stunning penalty save by John Pulskamp, Sporting will have to be at their best to stave off the challenge of San Diego who enter the match as league leaders in goals (7), assists (10) and average possession (63.3%) while the Californians are one of four teams yet to concede a goal during the opening two weeks of the season.
Following Saturday’s draw against Columbus, seven of Sporting’s 10 new players have debuted for the club, with only Lasse Berg Johnsen, Stefan Cleveland and Cielo Tschantret yet to see action among the newcomers.
HOSTING HIGH-FLYING SAN DIEGO
Sporting Kansas City is set to host early-season pacesetters San Diego FC in an intriguing contest at Sporting Park on Saturday night. A new-look Sporting picked up their first point of the season this past weekend while San Diego has got off to a roaring start, winning their opening two matches by a combined scoreline of 7-0.
Sporting last hosted San Diego FC on Aug. 9, 2025, falling to a 2-0 defeat at Sporting Park. San Diego got goals either side of halftime from star attacking duo Chucky Lozano and Anders Dreyer to pick up one of their league-best 12 road wins throughout the 2025 season.
The inaugural meeting between the two sides came on May 17, 2025, when Sporting visited the expansion side at Snapdragon Stadium and battled their way to a 0-0 stalemate. Shapi Suleymanov came closest to snatching a winner when his strike thundered off the crossbar in the second half.
Sporting trails the all-time regular-season series 0-1-1 following those two matchups in 2025 and will be looking to pick up their first win of the season and first-ever win over San Diego on Saturday.
JOVELJIC OFF THE MARK IN STYLE
Sporting Kansas City captain Dejan Joveljic opened his 2026 account this past weekend, bagging a pair of goals in the club’s 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew at Sporting Park on Saturday night and leading to a selection in the MLS Team of the Matchday.
After scoring 18 goals in his debut campaign with Sporting in 2025 - ranking tied for fifth in the MLS Golden Boot charts and tied for second all-time for a single season in club history - Joveljic tallied his first of the new season with a brilliantly taken finish to equalize just after halftime after receiving the ball off an assist from Jake Davis.
In the 72nd minute, Joveljic gave his side the lead with another expertly-taken goal inside the penalty area. The strike brought the Serbian to 20 regular-season goals for Sporting, equaling the club record as the fastest player to reach that total in team history.

PULSKAMP SAVES POINT WITH PENALTY

Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper John Pulskamp showed his character this past weekend, atoning for an early error to preserve a point for his side with a penalty save in the 87th minute of the club’s 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew at Sporting Park on Saturday night.
After a turnover inside his own area led to the Columbus opener in the first half, Pulskamp kept his head and rose to the occasion when the Crew were awarded a potentially match-winning penalty kick late in the match. The 24-year-old dove low to his right to deny star Columbus striker Wessam Abou Ali and seal Sporting’s first point of the season.
Pulskamp is the only goalkeeper to save a penalty through the opening two weeks of the 2026 MLS season and has now saved each of the last two penalties he has faced, including one last season in the 4-2 win over the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 30, 2025.
SPORTING SIGNS DEFENDER OR BLORIAN TO PRE-CONTRACT
Sporting Kansas City has signed Israeli defender Or Blorian to a pre-contract beginning on June 2, 2026 following the expiration of his contract with Hapoel Be’er Sheva, the club announced last Friday.
The 25-year-old has spent his entire career to date in Israel, making 186 career appearances while playing for Hapoel Be’er Sheva, Hapoel Tel Aviv and his hometown Maccabi Petah Tikva.
Blorian rose through the Maccabi Petah Tikva academy and made his debut for the first team in August 2019 before moving to Hapoel Be’er Sheva ahead of the 20222023 season. Blorian joined Hapoel Tel Aviv on loan for the 2023-2024 season before establishing himself with Be’er Sheva during the 2024-2025 season. He made 36 competitive appearances as Be’er Sheva finished atop the regular-season standings and won the 2024-2025 Israeli State Cup behind a stout defense.
Blorian has led Be’er Sheva to the summit of the Israeli Premier League in the ongoing 2025-2026 season, tallying two goals and four assists in 29 matches to help his club clinch a spot in the Championship Round with a dominant 17-3-4 record to date.
Blorian has earned four caps for the Israeli National Team, making his international debut in October 2025 and most recently playing the full 90 minutes for Israel in a 4-1 win over Moldova in FIFA World Cup Qualifying on November 16, 2025. Blorian previously represented Israel extensively at the youth levels, appearing in 49 matches from the U-16s to the U-21s.
DAVID LEE & RAPHAEL WICKY HEADLINE NEW ERA
Sporting Kansas City entered a new era this offseason following the hiring of David Lee as the club’s President of Soccer Operations & General Manager and Raphael Wicky as the team’s new head coach.
Lee, who arrived after a successful tenure at NYCFC from 2016-2025, serves as the club’s chief soccer officer and plays an executive leadership role in all areas of Sporting’s soccer enterprise, including first-team roster management, player recruitment, scouting, analytics, technical staff oversight and the continued development of Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy.
In early January 2026, Sporting announced that Wicky has been named head coach. Wicky, the fifth permanent head coach in club history, oversees the Sporting KC first team and reports directly to Lee.
Wicky, 48, was most recently at the helm of Swiss giants BSC Young Boys from 2022-2024, guiding the Bern-based club to the 2022-23 Super League and Cup double in his native Switzerland. Under Wicky, Young Boys posted a 51-17-20 record in all competitions, scoring 193 goals – an average of 2.19 goals per game.
Wicky’s revamped coaching staff sees Edu Rubio and Dominic Kinnear arrive as assistant coaches, while Roger Espinoza and Ash Wallace return as assistants and Darrin MacLeod receives a promotion from SKC II as goalkeeper coach.

“The message in the first half was easy to give, because I think the boys played really well, were courageous, were pressing high in moments, were very compact, and were just working as a team, as a unit. In possession, out of possession. That’s what I’m asking them to do. Then these mistakes happened, right? That’s football, that’s the way things happen. What was important was the reaction, not to have their heads down, and they reacted well. At halftime, we told them, ‘Hey, let’s keep doing what we did, we did this really well, and we’re going to turn this game around.’ That was the message. I think, overall, it was a very interesting, intensive game. We turned the game around. Columbus is a very good team that has played together for many years, who is difficult to play. I think our boys did really well.”
On coaching the team at home for the first time…
“It has been fantastic, to be honest. It was my first home game as the head coach of Sporting Kansas City. It’s a really beautiful stadium. Great fans. When I was the coach at Chicago Fire, I was here, that was in COVID, there was no one here, or 500 people. Really happy with the atmosphere. What I said as well (to) the team before the game is, our energy, we are the guys who have to transfer the energy to the fans. The fans are here showing up, great crowd, but our energy, we have to sparkle for those fans, and I think it’s amazing how the fans showed up, really good how the team went into the game, and I think it’s a give and take. I think it was a really beautiful evening to see this crowd.”

Raphael Wicky was appointed as Sporting KC’s head coach in January 2026 on a two-and-a-half-year contract through the 2027-28 season with a club option for the 2028-29 season. Wicky oversees the Sporting KC first team and reports directly to President of Soccer Operations & General Manager David Lee.
Prior to joining Sporting, Wicky was at the helm of Swiss giants BSC Young Boys from 2022-2024, guiding the club to the 2022-23 Super League and Cup double in his native Switzerland. Appointed in June 2022, Wicky enjoyed a brilliant maiden season with Young Boys – winning the Swiss Super League with a 21-4-11 record and finishing 16 points clear at the summit. Wicky and Young Boys completed the domestic double by winning the Swiss Cup following a 3-2 victory over FC Lugano in the final on June 4, 2023.
The Leuggern, Switzerland native previously coached in the United States, leading the U.S. Under-17 National Team at the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship and the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Wicky shifted to MLS for the following two years, serving as head coach of the Chicago Fire in 2020 and 2021.
Wicky began his coaching career in Switzerland as a youth coach with FC Thun and Servette FC before joining Swiss giants FC Basel in 2013. After coaching the club’s U-18 and U-21 teams, Wicky was named first team head coach ahead of the 2017-18 season. In his lone full season in charge, Basel posted a 29-11-9 record across all competitions and finished second in the Super League.
Wicky enjoyed a decorated 16-year playing career, highlighted by 75 caps with the Switzerland National Team. Wicky started every match for his country at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and also represented Switzerland at the 1996 and 2004 UEFA European Championships.
Wicky started his career with FC Sion in Switzerland where he won a Swiss Super League title and three Swiss Cups from 1993-1997. Wicky continued his career at German side Werder Bremen from 1997-2000, helping the team win the DFB-Pokal German Cup in 1999. Following a brief stint in Spain with Atletico Madrid in 2001, Wicky headed back to Germany and joined Hamburger SV where he spent the bulk of his career from 2001-2007, winning the DFL-Ligapokal German League Cup in 2003. Wicky returned to boyhood club Sion in 2007 before ending his playing career following a season in MLS with Chivas USA in 2008.

David Lee was appointed as the club’s President of Soccer Operations and General Manager in September 2025 and serves an executive leadership role overseeing all areas of Sporting’s soccer enterprise, including first-team roster management, player recruitment, scouting, analytics, technical staff oversight, and the continued development of Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy.
Lee arrived at Sporting from NYCFC, who he joined in 2014 as part of the club’s inaugural technical staff, specializing in player recruitment and scouting operations before his promotions to Technical Director in 2017 and Sporting Director in 2019.
NYCFC enjoyed sustained success during Lee’s tenure, winning the 2021 MLS Cup and 2022 Campeones Cup in addition to making seven straight playoff appearances from 2016-2022 before returning to the postseason in 2024 and 2025. In the final 10 seasons of Lee’s tenure, NYCFC led MLS in points (523) and playoff appearances (nine).
As NYCFC’s Sporting Director from 2019-2025, Lee managed the club’s entire soccer infrastructure, including coaching, sports performance, operations, player personnel and scouting at the MLS, MLS NEXT Pro and academy levels. His decade-long tenure at the club has seen NYCFC post eight winning seasons while developing numerous players who have succeeded in MLS, European leagues and international competition.
Lee began his professional career in his native England before joining Major League Soccer in 2011, working as Performance Analyst at the New York Red Bulls - during which time the club won the 2013 Supporters’ Shield - prior to joining NYCFC ahead of its inaugural campaign in 2015.
Edu Rubio joined Sporting KC as an assistant coach ahead of the 2026 season. The Spaniard most recently coached in the English Premier League, serving as an assistant manager at West Ham United (2024-2025) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (2022-2023) under manager Julen Lopetegui and as a coach at Crystal Palace (20202022) under the leadership of Patrick Vieira and Roy Hodgson. Rubio cut his teeth at the English FA, Crawley Town and the Nike Academy while also gaining extensive experience at the youth level, coaching various academy teams in England and his native Spain at Chelsea FC, Valencia CF, Crystal Palace and MK Dons.
COACH | DOMINIC KINNEAR
Dominic Kinnear joined Sporting KC as an assistant coach ahead of the 2026 season. Kinnear has coached in MLS for 25 years, including stops at the San Jose Earthquakes, the Houston Dynamo, the LA Galaxy and Cincinnati. Kinnear enjoyed a 15-year playing career, ranging from his native Scotland to the United States and Mexico. Kinnear earned 54 caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team before ending his playing career in 2000 following a five-year stint in MLS with the Colorado Rapids, San Jose Clash and Tampa Bay Mutiny. After starting his coaching career as an assistant with San Jose in 2001 and winning a pair of MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003, Kinnear was named San Jose head coach in 2004 and won an MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2005, culminating in MLS Coach of the Year honors. Kinnear famously led Houston to the most successful period in the club’s history – serving as head coach from 2005-2014 and winning back-to-back MLS Cup titles in 2006 and 2007. Kinnear held various roles at the LA Galaxy from 2017-2020 before serving as an assistant with Cincinnati from 2022-2025, helping the team win their first Supporters’ Shield in 2023.
ASSISTANT COACH | ROGER ESPINOZA
Roger Espinoza joined the Sporting KC technical staff as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025 season. Espinoza stepped into professional coaching after retiring as a player in the summer of 2024. He enjoyed a 16-year playing career highlighted by 14 seasons in Kansas City from 2008-2012 and 2015-2023. He helped Sporting to three U.S. Open Cup titles as one of the most accomplished players in club history and one of the longest-serving midfielders in MLS. From 2013-2014, Espinoza had a two-year stint at English side Wigan Athletic, scoring three goals in 57 appearances while gaining experience in the English Premier League and UEFA Europa League. On the international stage, Espinoza played 52 times for Honduras from 2009-2017, representing Honduras at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Espinoza also starred at the 2012 Summer Olympics in England – leading Honduras to the quarterfinals of the competition and scoring against Brazil at Wembley Stadium.
Ash Wallace has served on Sporting Kansas City’s technical staff since 2012, aiding the first team coaching staff in a variety of roles. Wallace, originally from England, had his first involvement with the club in August 2012 when he was contracted to produce a detailed scouting report on Seattle Sounders ahead of the U.S. Open Cup Final, helping Sporting claim their first of four major titles during a trophy-laden decade. Prior to joining Sporting KC, Wallace was a member of the Preston North End coaching staff and served as an opposition scout for Fleetwood Town in his native England, while earning a Degree in Sports Coaching from the University of Central Lancashire.
Darrin MacLeod joined the Sporting KC first team as the club’s goalkeeper coach in 2026 after serving as the goalkeeper coach for SKC II (2021-2025) and the SKC Academy (2020) over the previous six years. MacLeod has also worked with the U.S. Soccer Federation in the past, aiding with the development of the goalkeeping curriculum. During his playing days, MacLeod made 10 appearances for SKC II in the USL Championship from 2017-2018. After departing Kansas City, MacLeod linked up with North Carolina FC for the 2019 season before returning to Kansas City in a coaching role in 2020. Originally from Waterloo, Ontario in Canada, MacLeod trained with the academies of English Premier League club Newcastle United and Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon as a youth player before playing collegiate soccer at Drake University in Iowa.
Forward Stephen Afrifa was selected by Sporting Kansas City as the eighth overall pick of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. He enjoyed a standout career at FIU, where he amassed 23 goals and 11 assists in 63 appearances from 2019-2022. He made his debut for Sporting on May 17, 2023 at LAFC before earning his first start at Austin on July 15, 2023. Afrifa scored his first goal for the club in a 4-0 Open Cup win over FC Tulsa on May 21, 2024 and has six goals and three assists in 45 matches across all competitions.
Capable of playing as a striker or a winger, Afrifa began his professional journey on the heels of a phenomenal campaign in 2022 that yielded a team-high 10 goals, four assists and USC Second Team All-American honors. He guided the Panthers to the 2022
American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles and was named the AAC Championship Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Afrifa ended his senior season as a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist and a member of the USC All-East Region Team. As a freshman, Afrifa tallied three goals and three assists, and added two goals and an assist during his sophomore year. As a junior, Afrifa helped FIU make its first of two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances with eight goals and three assists.

Sporting Kansas City signed midfielder Jacob Bartlett as a Homegrown Player ahead of the 2025 campaign. Bartlett is the 22nd Homegrown Player to emerge from the Sporting KC Academy. Bartlett climbed the ranks in the SKC Academy, competing at the U-12 through U-19 levels, and represented SKC II as an amateur player in 2023 and 2024. Bartlett has made 34 appearances for Sporting’s first team, tallying two assists.
Bartlett joined the SKC Academy as an 11-year-old in 2017 and was part of the U-14 team that won the 2019 LA Galaxy Cup and placed second at the 2020 US Youth Futsal National Championships. Bartlett ascended to the U-15, U-17 and U-19 squads as a standout performer over the next three years, helping the U-19s to a 2023 UPSL regular

Bartlow joined Houston as the sixth overall selection in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft on a Generation adidas contract out of the University of Washington. Born in Toronto and raised in Montreal, Bassong moved to Belgium in 2013 to join the Mouscron academy. Bassong furthered his development in the heralded academy systems at Belgian side Anderlecht and French club Lille, beginning his professional

Sporting Kansas City acquired striker Dejan Joveljic from the LA Galaxy in exchange for $4 million on Feb. 1, 2025, marking the first cash-for-player trade in MLS history. Joveljic signed a new Designated Player contract upon arrival in Kansas City and has tallied 20 goals and two assist in 36 appearances for the club.
Joveljic joined Sporting following a 2024 campaign where he recorded 21 goals and eight assists, including six goals in the MLS Cup Playoffs as LA won MLS Cup. Joveljic amassed 85 goals and 26 assists during an accomplished professional career that has spanned Serbia, Germany and MLS in addition to loan spells in Belgium and Austria. The center forward was a Serbian SuperLiga champion at Red Star Belgrade and in 2021 joined the Galaxy, where he totaled 45 goals and 18 assists in four seasons as an integral
part of LA’s attack. Joveljic developed in the academy of Serbian powerhouse Red Star Belgrade, turning pro as a 16-year-old in 2016 and helped Red Star to the 2017-18 SuperLiga title. Joveljic enjoyed a breakout 2018-19 campaign that yielded 11 goals and his debut in the UEFA Champions League. Joveljic was transferred to German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019 and spent the latter half of the 2019-20 season on loan at Belgian heavyweight Anderlecht. Kortkamp represented Sporting at the U-14 through U-19 levels, helping the U-19s win their second consecutive UPSL regular season division title in 2024 and leading the U-17s to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Generation adidas Cup. Kortkamp trained with Sporting’s first team during the 2024 preseason in Miami before signing an amateur contract with Sporting KC II in May 2024. Sporting Kansas City acquired defender Justin Reynolds via trade from the Chicago Fire ahead of the 2026 MLS season. Reynolds – a versatile defender that primarily plays right back – has made 76 professional appearances while representing the Chicago Fire at both the MLS and MLS NEXT Pro level, while he also had a stint on loan with Chicago’s partner club, FC Lugano, in the Swiss Super League.
The Chicago native appeared 14 times for the Fire’s first team from 2023-2025 while also playing in 62 matches for Chicago Fire II in MLS NEXT Pro, tallying three goals and six assists. Reynolds joined FC Lugano in Switzerland for a two-month loan in March of 2024, making his lone appearance for the club on the final day of the Swiss Super League
season. Sporting Kansas City acquired winger Shapi Suleymanov in a transfer from Greek side Aris Thessaloniki ahead of the 2025 season. In eight prior years as a professional, Suleymanov recorded 55 goals and 46 assists while making over 300 appearances in Russia, Turkey, Israel and Greece. Suleymanov has made 35 appearances for Sporting KC, tallying two goals and four assists.
Suleymanov developed in the FC Krasnodar academy and broke into the club’s first team as a 17-year-old in 2017. That summer, he marked his second career appearance with a 93rd-minute goal to seal a 2-1 victory over Danish side Lyngby in 2017-18 Europa League qualifying. Suleymanov enjoyed a breakout season in 2018-19, finishing with 11 goals in all competitions. The following season saw Suleymanov strike twice in a 3-2 road win at FC Porto in the Champions League, highlighting another strong campaign in which the
winger helped Krasnodar to its second consecutive third-place finish in the RPL. In 2020-21, Suleymanov again eclipsed five total goals for the third straight year Suleymanov spent the next two seasons on loan, joining Turkish side Giresunspor in 2021-22 and Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel in 2022-23, where he recorded five goals and five assists as a key contributor. Suleymanov was loaned to Aris for the 2023-24 season and made a strong impression in his debut campaign, notching six goals and four assists across all competitions, leading to a permanent transfer to Aris in 2024.
As a Russian youth international, Suleymanov had six goals and three assists at the U-16 level and added two goals as a U-17 player, before making 12 appearances for the U-18s from 2016 to 2017. In his MLS NEXT Pro debut for SKC II on April 23, 2023, Tschantret scored in a narrow 3-2 road loss at FC Cincinnati 2 before earning his second start for the club four months later and making an even bigger impact, heading home the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute of a 2-1 victory at Austin FC II. Tschantret saw his role increase significantly in 2024 when he signed his professional deal with SKC II, starting 14 of 22 appearances
while scoring the game-winning goal against rivals St. Louis City 2 at Rock Chalk Park on July 21, 2024. Taking the captain’s armband in 2025, Tschantret played in 28 of SKC II’s 29 matches in all competitions – ranking second on the team with 2,392 minutes played – and scored a career-high three goals in the process. Tschantret’s 2,327 minutes played in MLS NEXT Pro led all teenagers in 2025.
