Sporting Kansas City (1-5-1, 4 pts.) remains on the road this week to face off against Supporters’ Shield leaders the Vancouver Whitecaps (6-1-0, 18 pts.) at BC Place on Friday night.
Sporting last visited Vancouver on July 26, 2025, falling to a 3-0 defeat at BC Place. Emmanuel Sabbi and JC Ngando both scored late in the first half to give the ‘Caps an unassailable lead before Mathias Laborda added a third in the 87th minute to seal the points for the hosts.
The Whitecaps claimed the season series against Sporting in 2025, also cruising to a 2-0 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on Sept. 20, 2025. Vancouver scored early through Edier Ocampo before Kenji Cabrera added a second just before halftime to seal the points.

FULL FOCUS ON REGULAR SEASON
Focus for the remainder of the 2026 season will be fully on the MLS regular season for Sporting Kansas City following the club’s elimination from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night.
With games coming thick and fast, the task doesn’t get any easier for Sporting this weekend as the team takes on Supporters’ Shield leaders the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place up in British Columbia.
The ‘Caps have got off to a flying start this season, going 6-1-0 on their way to the Western Conference summit while leading the league in goals (19), expected goals (18.88) and also allowing the fewest expected goals against (5.9).
VISITING SUPPORTERS’ SHIELD LEADERS
Sporting Kansas City returns to MLS regular-season action with a rare Friday night showdown when the team visits Supporters’ Shield leaders the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place.
Sporting has played just one regular-season match on a Friday in the last five seasons - earning a 2-1 victory on the road at the Colorado Rapids in the club’s customary Independence Day match on July 4, 2025 last season.
Sporting has lost their last four meetings against Vancouver, with the Whitecaps claiming the season series in 2024 and 2025. Last season, Sporting visited BC Place on July 26, 2025 and fell to a comprehensive 3-0 defeat following goals from Emmanuel Sabbi, JC Ngando and Mathias Laborda.
The two sides met at Sporting Park two months later on Sept. 20, 2025 with the ‘Caps again cruising to a 2-0 victory late in the regular season. Edier Ocampo scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the second minute of the match before Kenji Cabrera added a second just before halftime.
All-time, Sporting holds a 12-10-5 lead in the regular-season series but SKC has won just one of the last nine matches between the two sides dating back to the 2021 season.
BARTLETT SCORES FIRST PROFESSIONAL GOAL
Sporting Kansas City Homegrown midfielder Jacob Bartlett scored his first professional goal in the club’s 3-1 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday night, opening the scoring in the 27th minute.
Receiving an intricate pass from Dejan Joveljic, Bartlett strode into the area and slotted his finish beyond Daniel in the San Jose goal to give Sporting a first-half lead - just the second goal that San Jose has conceded all season. After tallying two assists in his rookie season in 2025, Saturday night marked the first goal of Bartlett’s professional career at any level.
At the age of 20 years and 186 days, Bartlett became the youngest player to score for Sporting KC in MLS play since Alenis Vargas on March 30, 2024. Bartlett is also the first Kansas City native to score for the club in all competitions since Kortne Ford scored in a U.S. Open Cup match on June 22, 2022. He is the first KC native to score in an MLS game since Cam Duke on Sept, 15, 2021.
Bartlett was born and raised in Kansas City, joining the SKC Academy as an 11-year-old in 2017 before signing with Sporting Kansas City as a Homegrown Player in 2025. His older brother, Lucas Bartlett, is a fellow professional at D.C. United who is in the midst of his fifth MLS season.
SPORTING HAS SECOND YOUNGEST SQUAD IN MLS
Sporting Kansas City entered a new era this past offseason under the guidance of President of Soccer Operations & General Manager David Lee and head coach Raphael Wicky and the club has embarked on the 2026 campaign with the second youngest roster in all of Major League Soccer.
With an average age of 23.8, Sporting is second to only Red Bull New York (23.5) in regards to the youngest rosters in MLS. Sporting’s three youngest starting lineups for MLS matches in club history have all come in the opening seven matches of the 2026 regular season.
Sporting’s two youngest lineups (24.1 average age) appeared in the team’s matches away and home against San Jose this season on Feb. 21 and April 11. Sporting’s 2026 roster contains just one player over the age of 30 in goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland (31), while Manu Garcia is the oldest outfield player at the age of 28.
In Sporting’s most recent regular-season match, the team’s back five of John Pulskamp (24), Justin Reynolds (21), Ian James (17), Diego Borges (21) and Jayden Reid (24) had an average age of 21.4.

BESLER & ILLIG TO BE INDUCTED INTO KANSAS SPORTS

Sporting Club co-owner Cliff Illig and Sporting Legend Matt Besler will be inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, the organization announced last week.
Illig and Besler will be honored on August 16 during an induction ceremony held in the Huhtamaki Shield Club at Sporting Park.
Matt Besler is widely recognized as one of the best defenders in MLS history. A five-time MLS All-Star and the 2012 MLS Defender of the Year, he anchored Sporting KC for 12 seasons and represented the USMNT in the 2014 World Cup. He played four seasons at Notre Dame, receiving All-American and Academic All-American honors as a senior and led Blue Valley West to the Kansas 5A State Championship as a senior.
Cliff Illig graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School and the University of Kansas. He brought professional Major League Soccer to the state as the principal owner of Sporting Kansas City and has also been a top driving force to position Kansas City as a premier soccer city in North America, including landing the 2026 World Cup in KC. Illig was named the 2026 Kansas Citian of the Year and is the Co-Chair of the KC2026 Board of Directors.

“It’s a really hard one, because we were not ready. That’s the truth. We were not ready in the first half for this fight and that is hard to swallow because cup games are fight games first. And against lower division teams, you have to be ready mentally to accept the fight. I don’t think it has anything to do with tactics or with anything else. It’s that we didn’t win duels, we didn’t win second balls, we didn’t win 1v1 duels. They were way more aggressive than we were. And, if you don’t have those basics then it’s very difficult. I don’t think we need to start talking about, is the build-up shape good? Is the build-up shape bad? It’s not about that. It’s about being ready for these fights and we were not, unfortunately.”

“Right now, after the game, I cannot give an answer to that. The fact is that they were winning almost every duel. They were playing long balls and they had the second balls. They had more fight in them. I cannot give you the answer right now. That is the fact from the first half. And then I think it was pretty late to react. We tried to react in the second half with playing different as well, because it wasn’t easy but they also played football, so it should be able for us as well. But we tried to be a bit more direct and give them more of a fight, which I think we did, but not enough. The first half clearly was just not enough.”

Raphael Wicky was appointed as Sporting KC’s head coach in January 2026 on a two-and-a-half-year contract through the 2027-28 season with a club option for the 2028-29 season. Wicky oversees the Sporting KC first team and reports directly to President of Soccer Operations & General Manager David Lee.
Prior to joining Sporting, Wicky was at the helm of Swiss giants BSC Young Boys from 2022-2024, guiding the club to the 2022-23 Super League and Cup double in his native Switzerland. Appointed in June 2022, Wicky enjoyed a brilliant maiden season with Young Boys – winning the Swiss Super League with a 21-4-11 record and finishing 16 points clear at the summit. Wicky and Young Boys completed the domestic double by winning the Swiss Cup following a 3-2 victory over FC Lugano in the final on June 4, 2023.
The Leuggern, Switzerland native previously coached in the United States, leading the U.S. Under-17 National Team at the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship and the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Wicky shifted to MLS for the following two years, serving as head coach of the Chicago Fire in 2020 and 2021.
Wicky began his coaching career in Switzerland as a youth coach with FC Thun and Servette FC before joining Swiss giants FC Basel in 2013. After coaching the club’s U-18 and U-21 teams, Wicky was named first team head coach ahead of the 2017-18 season. In his lone full season in charge, Basel posted a 29-11-9 record across all competitions and finished second in the Super League.
Wicky enjoyed a decorated 16-year playing career, highlighted by 75 caps with the Switzerland National Team. Wicky started every match for his country at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and also represented Switzerland at the 1996 and 2004 UEFA European Championships.
Wicky started his career with FC Sion in Switzerland where he won a Swiss Super League title and three Swiss Cups from 1993-1997. Wicky continued his career at German side Werder Bremen from 1997-2000, helping the team win the DFB-Pokal German Cup in 1999. Following a brief stint in Spain with Atletico Madrid in 2001, Wicky headed back to Germany and joined Hamburger SV where he spent the bulk of his career from 2001-2007, winning the DFL-Ligapokal German League Cup in 2003. Wicky returned to boyhood club Sion in 2007 before ending his playing career following a season in MLS with Chivas USA in 2008.

David Lee was appointed as the club’s President of Soccer Operations and General Manager in September 2025 and serves an executive leadership role overseeing all areas of Sporting’s soccer enterprise, including first-team roster management, player recruitment, scouting, analytics, technical staff oversight, and the continued development of Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy.
Lee arrived at Sporting from NYCFC, who he joined in 2014 as part of the club’s inaugural technical staff, specializing in player recruitment and scouting operations before his promotions to Technical Director in 2017 and Sporting Director in 2019.
NYCFC enjoyed sustained success during Lee’s tenure, winning the 2021 MLS Cup and 2022 Campeones Cup in addition to making seven straight playoff appearances from 2016-2022 before returning to the postseason in 2024 and 2025. In the final 10 seasons of Lee’s tenure, NYCFC led MLS in points (523) and playoff appearances (nine).
As NYCFC’s Sporting Director from 2019-2025, Lee managed the club’s entire soccer infrastructure, including coaching, sports performance, operations, player personnel and scouting at the MLS, MLS NEXT Pro and academy levels. His decade-long tenure at the club has seen NYCFC post eight winning seasons while developing numerous players who have succeeded in MLS, European leagues and international competition.
Lee began his professional career in his native England before joining Major League Soccer in 2011, working as Performance Analyst at the New York Red Bulls - during which time the club won the 2013 Supporters’ Shield - prior to joining NYCFC ahead of its inaugural campaign in 2015.
Edu Rubio joined Sporting KC as an assistant coach ahead of the 2026 season. The Spaniard most recently coached in the English Premier League, serving as an assistant manager at West Ham United (2024-2025) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (2022-2023) under manager Julen Lopetegui and as a coach at Crystal Palace (20202022) under the leadership of Patrick Vieira and Roy Hodgson. Rubio cut his teeth at the English FA, Crawley Town and the Nike Academy while also gaining extensive experience at the youth level, coaching various academy teams in England and his native Spain at Chelsea FC, Valencia CF, Crystal Palace and MK Dons.

Dominic Kinnear joined Sporting KC as an assistant coach ahead of the 2026 season. Kinnear has coached in MLS for 25 years, including stops at the San Jose Earthquakes, the Houston Dynamo, the LA Galaxy and Cincinnati. Kinnear enjoyed a 15-year playing career, ranging from his native Scotland to the United States and Mexico. Kinnear earned 54 caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team before ending his playing career in 2000 following a five-year stint in MLS with the Colorado Rapids, San Jose Clash and Tampa Bay Mutiny. After starting his coaching career as an assistant with San Jose in 2001 and winning a pair of MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003, Kinnear was named San Jose head coach in 2004 and won an MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2005, culminating in MLS Coach of the Year honors. Kinnear famously led Houston to the most successful period in the club’s history – serving as head coach from 2005-2014 and winning back-to-back MLS Cup titles in 2006 and 2007. Kinnear held various roles at the LA Galaxy from 2017-2020 before serving as an assistant with Cincinnati from 2022-2025, helping the team win their first Supporters’ Shield in 2023.
ASSISTANT COACH | ROGER ESPINOZA
Roger Espinoza joined the Sporting KC technical staff as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025 season. Espinoza stepped into professional coaching after retiring as a player in the summer of 2024. He enjoyed a 16-year playing career highlighted by 14 seasons in Kansas City from 2008-2012 and 2015-2023. He helped Sporting to three U.S. Open Cup titles as one of the most accomplished players in club history and one of the longest-serving midfielders in MLS. From 2013-2014, Espinoza had a two-year stint at English side Wigan Athletic, scoring three goals in 57 appearances while gaining experience in the English Premier League and UEFA Europa League. On the international stage, Espinoza played 52 times for Honduras from 2009-2017, representing Honduras at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Espinoza also starred at the 2012 Summer Olympics in England – leading Honduras to the quarterfinals of the competition and scoring against Brazil at Wembley Stadium.
Ash Wallace has served on Sporting Kansas City’s technical staff since 2012, aiding the first team coaching staff in a variety of roles. Wallace, originally from England, had his first involvement with the club in August 2012 when he was contracted to produce a detailed scouting report on Seattle Sounders ahead of the U.S. Open Cup Final, helping Sporting claim their first of four major titles during a trophy-laden decade. Prior to joining Sporting KC, Wallace was a member of the Preston North End coaching staff and served as an opposition scout for Fleetwood Town in his native England, while earning a Degree in Sports Coaching from the University of Central Lancashire.

He made his debut for Sporting on May 17, 2023 at LAFC before earning his first start at Austin on July 15, 2023. Capable of playing as a striker or a winger, Afrifa began his professional journey on the heels of a phenomenal campaign in 2022 that yielded a team-high 10 goals, four assists and USC Second Team All-American honors. He guided the Panthers to the 2022

Sporting Kansas City signed midfielder Jacob Bartlett as a Homegrown Player ahead of the 2025 campaign. Bartlett is the 22nd Homegrown Player to emerge from the Sporting KC Academy. Bartlett climbed the ranks in the SKC Academy, competing at the U-12 through U-19 levels, and represented SKC II as an amateur player in 2023 and 2024. Bartlett has made 40 appearances for Sporting’s first team and scored his first professional goal against San Jose on April 11, 2026.
Bartlett joined the SKC Academy as an 11-year-old in 2017 and was part of the U-14 team that won the 2019 LA Galaxy Cup and placed second at the 2020 US Youth Futsal National Championships. Bartlett ascended to the U-15, U-17 and U-19 squads as a

Sporting Kansas City added defender Ethan Bartlow to the roster as a free agent ahead of the 2026 season after the center back had impressed on trial during preseason. Bartlow spent the first five seasons of his professional career with the Houston Dynamo, logging 96 appearances in all competitions.
Bartlow joined Houston as the sixth overall selection in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft on a Generation adidas contract out of the University of Washington. Bartlow debuted for Houston on April 2, 2022 in a 3-1 victory over Inter Miami and logged 17 total appearances in 2022, before becoming a regular starter in 2023 – making 32 appearances across all competitions. Bartlow played in five of Houston’s six matches as

The Canadian has previously spent time in France, Belgium, Romania and Major League Soccer, including 43 matches in all competitions with CF Montreal. Born in Toronto and raised in Montreal, Bassong moved to Belgium in 2013 to join the Mouscron academy. Bassong furthered his development in the heralded academy systems at Belgian side Anderlecht and French club Lille, beginning his professional

Berg Johnsen arrives in KC having made 258 career appearances – tallying 18 goals and 21 assists – representing clubs across Scandinavia in his native Norway, Denmark and most recently in Sweden with Malmo.
After starting his career with Viking FK in Norway’s top division, Berg Johnsen was loaned to second-tier side Tromsdalen in 2019 and later moved to Raufoss in 2020, racking up 56 professional appearances during his time in Norway by the age of 21. Berg Johnsen moved to Randers FC in 2021 in Denmark’s top division, recording four goals and three assists in 98 appearances for Randers from 2021-2023, helping the team win the 2021

Sporting Kansas City acquired striker Dejan Joveljic from the LA Galaxy in exchange for $4 million on Feb. 1, 2025, marking the first cash-for-player trade in MLS history. Joveljic joined Sporting following a 2024 campaign where he recorded 21 goals and eight assists, including six goals in the MLS Cup Playoffs as LA won MLS Cup. Joveljic amassed 85 goals and 26 assists during an accomplished professional career that has spanned Serbia, Germany and MLS in addition to loan spells in Belgium and Austria. The center forward was a Serbian SuperLiga champion at Red Star Belgrade and in 2021 joined the Galaxy, where he totaled 45 goals and 18 assists in four seasons as an integral
part of LA’s attack. Joveljic developed in the academy of Serbian powerhouse Red Star Belgrade, turning pro as a 16-year-old in 2016 and helped Red Star to the 2017-18 SuperLiga title. Joveljic enjoyed a breakout 2018-19 campaign that yielded 11 goals and his debut in the UEFA Champions League. Joveljic was transferred to German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019 and spent the latter half of the 2019-20 season on loan at Belgian heavyweight Anderlecht. Kortkamp represented Sporting at the U-14 through U-19 levels, helping the U-19s win their second consecutive UPSL regular season division title in 2024 and leading the U-17s to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Generation adidas Cup. Kortkamp trained with Sporting’s first team during the 2024 preseason in Miami before signing an amateur contract with Sporting KC II in May 2024. Sporting Kansas City acquired defender Justin Reynolds via trade from the Chicago Fire ahead of the 2026 MLS season. Reynolds – a versatile defender that primarily plays right back – has made 76 professional appearances while representing the Chicago Fire at both the MLS and MLS NEXT Pro level, while he also had a stint on loan with Chicago’s partner club, FC Lugano, in the Swiss Super League.
The Chicago native appeared 14 times for the Fire’s first team from 2023-2025 while also playing in 62 matches for Chicago Fire II in MLS NEXT Pro, tallying three goals and six assists. Reynolds joined FC Lugano in Switzerland for a two-month loan in March of 2024, making his lone appearance for the club on the final day of the Swiss Super League

Suleymanov enjoyed a breakout season in 2018-19, finishing with 11 goals in all competitions. The following season saw Suleymanov strike twice in a 3-2 road win at FC Porto in the Champions League, highlighting another strong campaign in which the
winger helped Krasnodar to its second consecutive third-place finish in the RPL. In 2020-21, Suleymanov again eclipsed five total goals for the third straight year Suleymanov spent the next two seasons on loan, joining Turkish side Giresunspor in 2021-22 and Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel in 2022-23, where he recorded five goals and five assists as a key contributor. Suleymanov was loaned to Aris for the 2023-24 season and made a strong impression in his debut campaign, notching six goals and four assists across all competitions, leading to a permanent transfer to Aris in 2024.
As a Russian youth international, Suleymanov had six goals and three assists at the U-16 level and added two goals as a U-17 player, before making 12 appearances for the U-18s from 2016 to 2017. He continued to ascend the youth ranks with two goals for the U-19s in late 2017 and three goals for the U-21s from 2019 to 2020.

Sporting Kansas City signed midfielder Cielo Tschantret as a Homegrown Player ahead of the 2026 MLS season. Tschantret signed an MLS NEXT Pro professional contract with SKC II in early 2024 and appeared in 56 matches for the team as both an amateur and professional from 2023-2025, recording six goals and one assist.
In his MLS NEXT Pro debut for SKC II on April 23, 2023, Tschantret scored in a narrow 3-2 road loss at FC Cincinnati 2 before earning his second start for the club four months later and making an even bigger impact, heading home the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute of a 2-1 victory at Austin FC II. Tschantret saw his role increase significantly in 2024 when he signed his professional deal with SKC II, starting 14 of 22 appearances
while scoring the game-winning goal against rivals St. Louis City 2 at Rock Chalk Park on July 21, 2024. Taking the captain’s armband in 2025, Tschantret played in 28 of SKC II’s 29 matches in all competitions – ranking second on the team with 2,392 minutes played – and scored a career-high three goals in the process. Tschantret’s 2,327 minutes played in MLS NEXT Pro led all teenagers in 2025.
Tschantret arrived in KC from his native Baltimore, Maryland in 2020 and starred for the SKC Academy at the U-15, U-17 and U-19 levels. Tschantret, the son of SKC II head coach Lee Tschantret, spent six years in the club’s youth ranks from the U-15s to SKC II.
