Sporting Kansas City (1-7-2, 5 pts.) will look to build on the team’s gritty 1-1 draw against Seattle last weekend when the team heads to the PNW to face off against the Portland Timbers (3-6-1, 10 pts.) at Providence Park on Saturday night.
Sporting last visited the Timbers almost exactly a year ago on May 10, 2025, falling to a 1-0 defeat. In an evenly-matched game, it took a moment of brilliance from Santiago Moreno to decide the contest as his first-half bicycle kick was the difference between the two sides.
Sporting dropped the season series to Portland last year, also falling to a 4-2 defeat at Sporting Park on April 13, 2025. LOOKING TO BUILD ON POSITIVE OUTING
Sporting Kansas City will look to build on the team’s positive showing during the club’s 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders last Saturday when the team heads to Portland to take on the Timbers at Providence Park on Saturday night with kickoff set for 9:30 p.m. CT.
Last Saturday’s draw provided some much-needed respite, snapping a six-game losing streak across all competitions and earning the club’s first point since beating the LA Galaxy 2-1 on March 14. Dejan Joveljic’s goal erased an early deficit as Sporting punished a mistake from one of the best defensive outfits of the 2026 season.
In the regular season, the Sounders once again proved to be a slump-buster for Sporting and has now been the opponent that curtailed a 10-game winless run in 2023, a 12-game winless run in 2024 and a five-game losing streak in 2026.
After six straight matches against teams that are currently in the playoff places, Sporting’s final four matches before the World Cup break will come against teams currently below the playoff line: Portland (13th in West), LA Galaxy (10th in West), Austin (11th in West) and Red Bull New York (11th in East).
TAKING ON THE TIMBERS
Sporting Kansas City is back on the road this weekend when the team heads to the Pacific Northwest to face off against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Saturday night.
Sporting last visited the Timbers almost exactly a year ago on May 10, 2025, suffering a 1-0 defeat at Providence Park. Santiago Moreno scored the only goal of the game with a stunning free kick in the first half as Portland held on to claim all three points at home in a tight match.
The two sides had already met at Sporting Park on April 13, 2025 with the Timbers claiming a 4-2 defeat. Shapi Suleymanov and Dejan Joveljic tallied for the hosts but Portland picked up the road win following an SKC own goal to go along with a brace from Kevin Kelsy and a goal from David Ayala.
All-time, Sporting narrowly trails the Timbers 9-10-7 in the regular-season series, including a 4-8-2 mark at Providence Park where Sporting has not tasted victory since 2017.
JOVELJIC SCORES TEAM-LEADING FIFTH OF 2026
Sporting Kansas City striker Dejan Joveljic once again showed his killer instinct in front of goal this past weekend, tallying his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders at Sporting Park on Saturday afternoon.
Capitalizing on a mistake from Sounders captain Cristian Roldan, Joveljic showed his composure to slot beyond Andrew Thomas in the Seattle goal to equalize in the 18th minute - marking only the fifth goal that the Sounders had conceded all season.
After leading the team with 18 goals in 2025, Joveljic now has 23 goals in 42 regular season games and his 0.55 goals per game average is the best in club history among players with a minimum of 15 goals.
Joveljic is the only player with five or more MLS regular season goals in each of the past five seasons (2022-2026), and his goal on Saturday snapped Seattle’s 420-minute shutout streak away from home in the regular season and also snapped Sporting’s 350-minute scoreless streak across all competitions.
CLEVELAND IMPRESSES IN DEBUT
Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland made the most of his opportunity this past weekend, putting in an impressive performance as the team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 1-1 draw against high-flying Seattle Sounders at Sporting Park on Saturday afternoon.
Making his first MLS appearance since July 12, 2023 with Seattle, Cleveland rebounded after conceding in the opening two minutes of the match to record seven saves - one shy of his career-high - and help Sporting stave off a dominant Sounders squad and secure a point.
Prior to joining Sporting via trade from Austin FC in December, Cleveland made 65 appearances in his professional career - including 29 in the MLS regular season - while representing the Chicago Fire (2017-2019), the Seattle Sounders (2020-2023) and Austin (2024-2025).
Cleveland is the 13th different player to make their Sporting debut in 2026. The 2015 season was the last time SKC had 13 players make their first regular season appearances for the club in a single season.
YOUNG SQUAD CONTINUES TO DEVELOP
It has been trial by fire for Sporting Kansas City’s young squad this season, with a number of teenagers and inexperienced players playing major minutes for the club as the organization begins a new era under head coach Raphael Wicky and President of Soccer Operations & GM David Lee.
With an average age of 23.8, Sporting is second to only Red Bull New York (23.5) among the youngest rosters in MLS, while Sporting ranks third youngest in MLS for average age of players used behind New York and Colorado. Sporting’s five youngest starting lineups for MLS matches in club history have all come in the opening 10 matches in 2026.
Seven players age 21 or younger have played MLS minutes for Sporting this season, while 90.3% of Sporting’s minutes played this year have been by players age 26 or younger.
Sporting’s 2026 roster contains just one player over the age of 30 in goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland (31), while Manu Garcia is the oldest outfield player at the age of 28. Almost a third of Sporting’s roster (seven of 24) is aged 21 or younger.

“I think it was a great team effort. I just told them, great team effort and great work from everyone. I think this is something to build. You concede after two minutes. After what we’ve been through and where we are right now, it’s not easy. And the team reacted. The team didn’t crumble. The team reacted and stayed in the game and then came back. I think I saw some good football, some good actions, some playing up from the back, some accelerations. Now can we have that more? Can we build confidence to have the ball then more and then to finish these actions more? But a great defensive effort from everyone. We knew we needed that and I think that was a really good reaction from the team. I’m proud of the effort and proud of the reaction after that early goal, not to crumble and concede more. It’s something to build from, definitely.”
On the team’s defensive tactics…
“The downside from defending deep is that possibly the opponent has then a lot of crosses and has then a lot of shots. If you defend way higher up, the opponent may have more space in behind, which Seattle, when they have space, are very, very good. So we wanted to not give them so much space for their game. But of course, it could be good to defend 10 yards higher. I will have to watch the game again. Depending on where the shots are from, if it’s an 18-yard shot or from a difficult angle, then that’s what you have to take when you defend a bit deeper, right? You have to choose what you want. I will have to watch the game again and see where all these shots come from, but again I saw some positives. I saw also that we had more chances than usual that we created. We had some good actions with the ball, so that is very positive to build.”

“He did well. I think Stefan brought what I wanted him to bring which is what he brings every day in training. His experience, his calmness, his decision making was good. I think he had a few good saves. That’s what I wanted from him.”

Raphael Wicky was appointed as Sporting KC’s head coach in January 2026 on a two-and-a-half-year contract through the 2027-28 season with a club option for the 2028-29 season. Prior to joining Sporting, Wicky was at the helm of Swiss giants BSC Young Boys from 2022-2024, guiding the club to the 2022-23 Super League and Cup double in his native Switzerland. The Leuggern, Switzerland native previously coached in the United States, leading the U.S. Under-17 National Team at the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship and the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Wicky shifted to MLS for the following two years, serving as head coach of the Chicago Fire in 2020 and 2021.
Wicky began his coaching career in Switzerland as a youth coach with FC Thun and Servette FC before joining Swiss giants FC Basel in 2013. After coaching the club’s U-18 and U-21 teams, Wicky was named first team head coach ahead of the 2017-18 season. In his lone full season in charge, Basel posted a 29-11-9 record across all competitions and finished second in the Super League.
Wicky enjoyed a decorated 16-year playing career, highlighted by 75 caps with the Switzerland National Team. Wicky started every match for his country at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and also represented Switzerland at the 1996 and 2004 UEFA European Championships.
Wicky started his career with FC Sion in Switzerland where he won a Swiss Super League title and three Swiss Cups from 1993-1997. Wicky continued his career at German side Werder Bremen from 1997-2000, helping the team win the DFB-Pokal German Cup in 1999. Following a brief stint in Spain with Atletico Madrid in 2001, Wicky headed back to Germany and joined Hamburger SV where he spent the bulk of his career from 2001-2007, winning the DFL-Ligapokal German League Cup in 2003. Wicky returned to boyhood club Sion in 2007 before ending his playing career following a season in MLS with Chivas USA in 2008.

David Lee was appointed as the club’s President of Soccer Operations and General Manager in September 2025 and serves an executive leadership role overseeing all areas of Sporting’s soccer enterprise, including first-team roster management, player recruitment, scouting, analytics, technical staff oversight, and the continued development of Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy.
Lee arrived at Sporting from NYCFC, who he joined in 2014 as part of the club’s inaugural technical staff, specializing in player recruitment and scouting operations before his promotions to Technical Director in 2017 and Sporting Director in 2019.
NYCFC enjoyed sustained success during Lee’s tenure, winning the 2021 MLS Cup and 2022 Campeones Cup in addition to making seven straight playoff appearances from 2016-2022 before returning to the postseason in 2024 and 2025. In the final 10 seasons of Lee’s tenure, NYCFC led MLS in points (523) and playoff appearances (nine).
As NYCFC’s Sporting Director from 2019-2025, Lee managed the club’s entire soccer infrastructure, including coaching, sports performance, operations, player personnel and scouting at the MLS, MLS NEXT Pro and academy levels. His decade-long tenure at the club has seen NYCFC post eight winning seasons while developing numerous players who have succeeded in MLS, European leagues and international competition.
Lee began his professional career in his native England before joining Major League Soccer in 2011, working as Performance Analyst at the New York Red Bulls - during which time the club won the 2013 Supporters’ Shield - prior to joining NYCFC ahead of its inaugural campaign in 2015.
Edu Rubio joined Sporting KC as an assistant coach ahead of the 2026 season. The Spaniard most recently coached in the English Premier League, serving as an assistant manager at West Ham United (2024-2025) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (2022-2023) under manager Julen Lopetegui and as a coach at Crystal Palace (20202022) under the leadership of Patrick Vieira and Roy Hodgson. Rubio cut his teeth at the English FA, Crawley Town and the Nike Academy while also gaining extensive experience at the youth level, coaching various academy teams in England and his native Spain at Chelsea FC, Valencia CF, Crystal Palace and MK Dons.

Dominic Kinnear joined Sporting KC as an assistant coach ahead of the 2026 season. Kinnear has coached in MLS for 25 years, including stops at the San Jose Earthquakes, the Houston Dynamo, the LA Galaxy and Cincinnati. Kinnear enjoyed a 15-year playing career, ranging from his native Scotland to the United States and Mexico. Kinnear earned 54 caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team before ending his playing career in 2000 following a five-year stint in MLS with the Colorado Rapids, San Jose Clash and Tampa Bay Mutiny. After starting his coaching career as an assistant with San Jose in 2001 and winning a pair of MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003, Kinnear was named San Jose head coach in 2004 and won an MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2005, culminating in MLS Coach of the Year honors. Kinnear famously led Houston to the most successful period in the club’s history – serving as head coach from 2005-2014 and winning back-to-back MLS Cup titles in 2006 and 2007. Kinnear held various roles at the LA Galaxy from 2017-2020 before serving as an assistant with Cincinnati from 2022-2025, helping the team win their first Supporters’ Shield in 2023.

Roger Espinoza joined the Sporting KC technical staff as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025 season. Espinoza stepped into professional coaching after retiring as a player in the summer of 2024. He enjoyed a 16-year playing career highlighted by 14 seasons in Kansas City from 2008-2012 and 2015-2023. He helped Sporting to three U.S. Open Cup titles as one of the most accomplished players in club history and one of the longest-serving midfielders in MLS. From 2013-2014, Espinoza had a two-year stint at English side Wigan Athletic, scoring three goals in 57 appearances while gaining experience in the English Premier League and UEFA Europa League. On the international stage, Espinoza played 52 times for Honduras from 2009-2017, representing Honduras at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Espinoza also starred at the 2012 Summer Olympics in England – leading Honduras to the quarterfinals of the competition and scoring against Brazil at Wembley Stadium.
Ash Wallace has served on Sporting Kansas City’s technical staff since 2012, aiding the first team coaching staff in a variety of roles. Wallace, originally from England, had his first involvement with the club in August 2012 when he was contracted to produce a detailed scouting report on Seattle Sounders ahead of the U.S. Open Cup Final, helping Sporting claim their first of four major titles during a trophy-laden decade. Prior to joining Sporting KC, Wallace was a member of the Preston North End coaching staff and served as an opposition scout for Fleetwood Town in his native England, while earning a Degree in Sports Coaching from the University of Central Lancashire.

Sporting Kansas City signed midfielder Jacob Bartlett as a Homegrown Player ahead of the 2025 campaign. Bartlett is the 22nd Homegrown Player to emerge from the Sporting KC Academy. Bartlett climbed the ranks in the SKC Academy, competing at the U-12 through U-19 levels, and represented SKC II as an amateur player in 2023 and 2024. Bartlett has made 43 appearances for Sporting’s first team and scored his first professional goal against San Jose on April 11, 2026.
Bartlett joined the SKC Academy as an 11-year-old in 2017 and was part of the U-14 team that won the 2019 LA Galaxy Cup and placed second at the 2020 US Youth Futsal National Championships. Bartlett ascended to the U-15, U-17 and U-19 squads as a

Sporting Kansas City added defender Ethan Bartlow to the roster as a free agent ahead of the 2026 season after the center back had impressed on trial during preseason. Bartlow spent the first five seasons of his professional career with the Houston Dynamo, logging 96 appearances in all competitions.
Bartlow joined Houston as the sixth overall selection in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft on a Generation adidas contract out of the University of Washington. Bartlow debuted for Houston on April 2, 2022 in a 3-1 victory over Inter Miami and logged 17 total appearances in 2022, before becoming a regular starter in 2023 – making 32 appearances across all competitions. Bartlow played in five of Houston’s six matches as
the club won their second U.S. Open Cup title in 2023, only missing the final due to injury, and helped his side reach the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017. Sporting Kansas City acquired Norwegian midfielder Lasse Berg Johnsen in a transfer from Swedish club Malmo FF ahead of the 2026 season. Berg Johnsen arrives in KC having made 258 career appearances – tallying 18 goals and 21 assists – representing clubs across Scandinavia in his native Norway, Denmark and most recently in Sweden with Malmo.
After starting his career with Viking FK in Norway’s top division, Berg Johnsen was loaned to second-tier side Tromsdalen in 2019 and later moved to Raufoss in 2020, racking up 56 professional appearances during his time in Norway by the age of 21. Berg Johnsen moved to Randers FC in 2021 in Denmark’s top division, recording four goals and three assists in 98 appearances for Randers from 2021-2023, helping the team win the 2021
Danish Cup. In the summer of 2023, Berg Johnsen was transferred to Swedish giants Malmo FF where he made an instant impact, playing a key role in the second half of the campaign as Malmo won the Allsvenskan title. Cleveland has spent the majority of his career in Seattle, making 29 appearances for the club across all competitions. Joveljic joined Sporting following a 2024 campaign where he recorded 21 goals and eight assists, including six goals in the MLS Cup Playoffs as LA won MLS Cup. Joveljic amassed 85 goals and 26 assists during an accomplished professional career that has spanned Serbia, Germany and MLS in addition to loan spells in Belgium and Austria. The center forward was a Serbian SuperLiga champion at Red Star Belgrade and in 2021 joined the Galaxy, where he totaled 45 goals and 18 assists in four seasons as an integral
part of LA’s attack. Joveljic developed in the academy of Serbian powerhouse Red Star Belgrade, turning pro as a 16-year-old in 2016 and helped Red Star to the 2017-18 SuperLiga title. Joveljic enjoyed a breakout 2018-19 campaign that yielded 11 goals and his debut in the UEFA Champions League. Joveljic was transferred to German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019 and spent the latter half of the 2019-20 season on loan at Belgian heavyweight Anderlecht. Kortkamp represented Sporting at the U-14 through U-19 levels, helping the U-19s win their second consecutive UPSL regular season division title in 2024 and leading the U-17s to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Generation adidas Cup. Kortkamp trained with Sporting’s first team during the 2024 preseason in Miami before signing an amateur contract with Sporting KC II in May 2024. Miller played 77 total matches in four college seasons, logging 27 appearances at Xavier in 2021 before transferring to Indiana and featuring in 50 games or the Hoosiers from 2022-2024. Sporting Kansas City acquired winger Shapi Suleymanov in a transfer from Greek side Aris Thessaloniki ahead of the 2025 season. In eight prior years as a professional, Suleymanov recorded 55 goals and 46 assists while making over 300 appearances in Russia, Turkey, Israel and Greece. Suleymanov has made 43 appearances for Sporting KC, tallying three goals and four assists.
Suleymanov developed in the FC Krasnodar academy and broke into the club’s first team as a 17-year-old in 2017. That summer, he marked his second career appearance with a 93rd-minute goal to seal a 2-1 victory over Danish side Lyngby in 2017-18 Europa League qualifying. Suleymanov enjoyed a breakout season in 2018-19, finishing with 11 goals in all competitions. The following season saw Suleymanov strike twice in a 3-2 road win at FC Porto in the Champions League, highlighting another strong campaign in which the
winger helped Krasnodar to its second consecutive third-place finish in the RPL. In 2020-21, Suleymanov again eclipsed five total goals for the third straight year Suleymanov spent the next two seasons on loan, joining Turkish side Giresunspor in 2021-22 and Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel in 2022-23, where he recorded five goals and five assists as a key contributor. Suleymanov was loaned to Aris for the 2023-24 season and made a strong impression in his debut campaign, notching six goals and four assists across all competitions, leading to a permanent transfer to Aris in 2024.
As a Russian youth international, Suleymanov had six goals and three assists at the U-16 level and added two goals as a U-17 player, before making 12 appearances for the U-18s from 2016 to 2017. He continued to ascend the youth ranks with two goals for the U-19s in late 2017 and three goals for the U-21s from 2019 to 2020.

Sporting Kansas City signed midfielder Cielo Tschantret as a Homegrown Player ahead of the 2026 MLS season. Tschantret signed an MLS NEXT Pro professional contract with SKC II in early 2024 and appeared in 56 matches for the team as both an amateur and professional from 2023-2025, recording six goals and one assist. Tschantret made his first-team debut on April 17, 2026, starting at the Vancouver Whitecaps.
In his MLS NEXT Pro debut for SKC II on April 23, 2023, Tschantret scored in a narrow 3-2 road loss at FC Cincinnati 2 before earning his second start for the club four months later and making an even bigger impact, heading home the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute of a 2-1 victory at Austin FC II. Tschantret saw his role increase significantly
in 2024 when he signed his professional deal with SKC II, starting 14 of 22 appearances while scoring the game-winning goal against rivals St. Louis City 2 at Rock Chalk Park on July 21, 2024. Taking the captain’s armband in 2025, Tschantret played in 28 of SKC II’s 29 matches in all competitions – ranking second on the team with 2,392 minutes played – and scored a career-high three goals in the process. Tschantret’s 2,327 minutes played in MLS NEXT Pro led all teenagers in 2025.
Tschantret arrived in KC from his native Baltimore, Maryland in 2020 and starred for the SKC Academy at the U-15, U-17 and U-19 levels. Tschantret, the son of SKC II head coach Lee Tschantret, spent six years in the club’s youth ranks from the U-15s to SKC II.
