#HOUvSKC: HEAD-TO-HEAD

Sporting Kansas City is back on the road this weekend as the team closes out a road-heavy month of May with a visit to Texas to take on the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night.

Sporting last visited Shell Energy Stadium in the club’s 2024 season opener back on Feb. 24, 2024 with the two sides playing out a 1-1 draw. Sporting took the lead through a fabulous solo effort from Erik Thommy before Gabe Segal equalized for Houston.

Sporting then hosted Houston at Children’s Mercy Park on May 11, 2024 in the most recent matchup between the two teams. Sporting fell behind to a brilliant strike from Hector Herrera before Daniel Salloi equalized midway through the second half. However, Houston found a late winner through Ibrahim Aliyu in the 78th minute to earn a 2-1 victory.

The all-time regular-season series is deadlocked at 14-14-16, though Sporting is 4-1-3 in their last eight regular-season matches against the Dynamo.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES

SPORTING LOOKING TO TURN DRAWS INTO WINS

Sporting Kansas City closes out a hectic month of May this weekend when the team jets south to take on the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night. Sporting has navigated a tricky stretch of matches throughout the month - notably playing three road games in eight days from May 10-17 - to pick up a 1-1-3 record, including three consecutive draws.

Sporting came back from a two-goal halftime deficit both at St. Louis on May 14 and at home against New England on May 24 to pick up points, while the team also defended staunchly at San Diego on May 17 on their way to a 0-0 draw. Sporting has drawn three straight regular season matches after drawing just three of its previous 37 regular season matches between April 27, 2024, and May 10, 2025.

Sporting has trailed by two goals at halftime three times this season and, on each occasion, Sporting has rallied to secure a point. Sporting trailed 2-0 at halftime (and 3-0 in the 46th minute) of a 3-3 home draw against Minnesota United on March 15, 2-0 at halftime of a 2-2 road draw at St. Louis on May 14, and 2-0 at halftime of last weekend’s 3-3 home draw against New England. Prior to this season, Sporting had lost 13 consecutive regular season matches when trailing by two or more goals at halftime.

Sporting has earned three results in its last five away matches (1-2-2 record) since April 19 after earning just two results in its previous 18 away matches (1-16-1 record) from April 2024 through March 2025.

BACK IN HOUSTON FOR FIRST TIME IN 15 MONTHS

Sporting Kansas City is back on the road this weekend to face off against longtime foes the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night. After visiting Houston four times in the space of 10 months from May 2023 to February 2024, Saturday’s trip to Texas marks Sporting’s first visit to Shell Energy Stadium in over 15 months.

The two sides last met at Children’s Mercy Park on May 11, 2024, with Houston claiming a rare win in Kansas City throughout the series. After a stunning goal from Hector Herrera gave the visitors a first half lead, Sporting pulled themselves level through Daniel Salloi only for Ibrahim Aliyu to score the game-winner in the 78th minute and seal Houston’s second regular-season road win at Children’s Mercy Park since 2014.

Sporting last visited Shell Energy Stadium in the club’s 2024 season opener on Feb. 24, 2024, playing out a 1-1 draw. Erik Thommy scored a brilliant solo effort in the 61st minute to give Sporting the lead but Gabe Segal - who scored his first career brace midweek in Houston’s 3-0 win over NYCFC - equalized eight minutes later to salvage a point for the hosts.

SALLOI SPARKS COMEBACK

Sporting Kansas City forward and Academy product Daniel Salloi sparked the club’s furious comeback against the New England Revolution at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night, scoring his team’s first goal early in the second half as Sporting turned a 2-0 halftime deficit into a 3-2 second-half lead in the eventual 3-3 draw.

Salloi, who dedicated his goal to the memory of former teammate Gadi Kinda, scored fired home the rebound after Erik Thommy’s shot had been saved in the 53rd minute to give Sporting hope.

Salloi now has 111 career goal contributions (65 goals, 46 assists) for Sporting in all competitions, fourth most in club history behind only Preki (185), Graham Zusi (125) and Johnny Russell (119). The Hungarian ranks fourth in club history in both regular-season goals (52) and goals across all competitions (65).

JOVELJIC SCORES TEAM-LEADING SEVENTH GOAL

Sporting Kansas City forward Dejan Joveljic found the back of the net in his second consecutive appearance this past weekend, scoring from the penalty spot in the club’s wild 3-3 draw with the New England Revolution at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night.

Joveljic’s goal was his team-leading seventh goal of the season and the 41st goal of his MLS regular season career. The Serbian had previously scored the equalizer in the club’s 2-2 draw with rivals St. Louis at Energizer Park on May 14 before remaining home for the 0-0 draw at San Diego FC on May 17 as he and his wife awaited the birth of their first child.

Joveljic has now converted an MLS-best three penalties this season, converting three of the four penalty kicks he has taken - only being denied by Portland’s James Pantemis late on in the 4-2 home defeat on April 13. Sporting have won four penalties in the MLS this season, more than any other team.

Joveljic and his wife Andjela welcomed the birth of their daughter, Daša Joveljic, on Sunday.

GARCIA CAPS FURIOUS EIGHT MINUTE PERIOD

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Manu Garcia capped a brilliant eight-minute period early in the second half of Sporting’s 3-3 draw with the New England Revolution at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night, scoring the team’s third goal as the squad turned a 2-0 halftime deficit into a 3-2 lead in the second half.

The goal was Garcia’s second of the season since joining Sporting back in February, having also tallied in the club’s 5-3 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park on April 19.

Midfielders Erik Thommy and Zorhan Bassong both earned assists on the goal, with Thommy clipping an inch-perfect cross to Garcia after Bassong had won the ball in his own half to spark the attack.

Thommy now has three assists this season, all coming in substitute appearances, and 20 assists in his MLS regular season career. Bassong’s assist was his first of the season and first in the MLS regular season since June 19, 2024.

BASSONG CALLED UP TO CANADA

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Zorhan Bassong has been selected to the Canada Men’s National Team for the 2025 Canadian Shield, an international tournament taking place at BMO Field in Toronto featuring Ukraine, Ivory Coast, New Zealand and hosts Canada.

Bassong and the Reds will face Ukraine on June 7 and Ivory Coast on June 10. Both matches are scheduled during FIFA’s international window and will serve as tune-ups ahead of the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup. Bassong and Sporting forward Stephen Afrifa have been named to Canada’s preliminary 60-man roster for the Gold Cup, with the final squad to be announced by June 4.

Bassong, who recorded his first assist of the season in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with New England, will join Canada’s squad for the second time this year. He was previously named to head coach Jesse Marsch’s roster for the 2025 Concacaf Nations League Finals in March. He has two career caps for Canada’s senior national team, both of which came in January 2020.

SPORTING CONTINUES ROAD-HEAVY STRETCH IN HOUSTON

Sporting Kansas City continues the club’s brutal schedule throughout the month of May and early June that sees the team play five of seven matches on the road.

After a brief respite with a home match against New England last weekend on the back of three road matches in eight days between May 10-17, Sporting is back on the road the next two weekends with trips to Houston on May 31 and LAFC on June 8.

Sporting will follow up that stretch with some home comforts as the team will play five of six at Children’s Mercy Park following the LAFC match, including three consecutive home matches from June 14-28.

POSTGAME: #SKCvNE

Head coach Kerry Zavagnin

Thoughts on the match…

“We were slow out of the gate. I think we were slow getting pressure on the ball and that led to a lot of opportunities for them. Obviously the two goals that they got had us chasing again from early in the game. We started stepping up the field, but not with any real sort of organization. We wanted to, we were just late to a lot of things. We made a little shift tactically to start the second half. We brought on three new players, which gave great energy to the game and kind of started turning the game in our favor. But after the instructions were given at halftime, I told the guys, ‘As much as we’re going to make these tactical changes, the real way to get back in this game is to start to compete. We need energy and we need an emotional commitment to the second half.’ We, as a group, have been through a lot this year already. To come back from 2-0 with 45 minutes to play at our home is not that big of a deal compared to what this group has been through. I said that to them as well and all credit to them. They’ve made us proud once again. Although the result didn’t go in the most positive direction, you can see the competitiveness, the spirit, the will, the want in the group and it’s very difficult to be disappointed when you have a group like that.”

On the team’s first match since Gadi Kinda passed away… “There was a part of that emotion that led to the outburst. They didn’t want to let the night and that way. You would probably have to ask them individually, because this was very much an individual feeling based on the loss of Gadi. We all feel it, some at a different level, but throughout the week all of the club has supported each other. Once again tonight, in a difficult moment of adversity on the field, there was that support again. I certainly believe that there was someone watching tonight.”

A leading independent children’s health organization dedicated to holistic care, translational research, educating caregivers and breakthrough innovation to create a world of well-being for all children, Children’s Mercy Kansas City began a 10-year partnership with Sporting KC in 2016. Children’s Mercy provides the highest level of care for children from birth through the age of 21. U.S. News & World Report has repeatedly ranked Children’s Mercy as one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals.”

The comprehensive partnership between Sporting KC and Children’s Mercy Kansas City – which includes naming rights to Sporting KC’s world-class stadium, Children’s Mercy Park, as well as the Sporting KC II and Sporting KC Academy complex at Swope Soccer Village – is also at the forefront of Sporting’s state-of-the-art training ground at Compass Minerals National Performance Center. In a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a professional sports team, a national sports federation and a sports medicine provider, the facility opened in 2018 and features the Children’s Mercy Sports Medicine Center alongside Sporting Kansas City and U.S. Soccer.

Children’s Mercy Kansas City is also the official health care and sports medicine provider for the Sporting Kansas City Academy and Compass Minerals National Performance Center as part of a multi-faceted partnership that focuses on the following three components to impact the local community:

1. Strengthening community

• The partnership directly supports The Victory Project, Sporting’s foundation to help children - including those with cancer and disabilities – through all of life’s challenges.

• Sporting KC players and staff engage with, encourage and inspire Children’s Mercy patients throughout the year during hospital visits and special events.

• FLEET, an innovative team of remote experience robots operated via an iPad, regularly attends Sporting KC home matches to provide an all-access interactive experience for patients at Children’s Mercy. Manufactured by Double Robotics, the robot allows users to enjoy two-way live audio and video captured from a 150-degree wide-angle lens while navigating to control their own VIP behind-the-scenes journey.

• Launched in 2018, the RED CARD campaign addresses one of the most significant social issues impacting children nationwide by empowering youth and adults to prevent and intervene in bullying. Through school assemblies and community-wide messaging, the RED CARD initiative aims to reach children, parents, teachers and coaches who have daily opportunities to create supportive environments and stop bullying in its tracks. In 2023 and 2024, Sporting and Children’s Mercy teamed up to provide 90 students at 30 local elementary and middle schools with SKC jerseys on National Random Acts of Kindness Day as part of a Kindness In The Schools (K.I.T.S.) initiative.

2. Improving access to pediatric-trained sports medicine

• The Children’s Mercy Sports Medicine Center at Village West is located inside Compass Minerals National Performance Center and offers a full range of sports medicine services, resources and programming for youth athletes. More than two million high-school athletes and 3.5 million children under age 14 are injured each year in the U.S. playing sports. Only a small percentage are treated by pediatric-trained sports medicine specialists who truly understand the youth’s growing body, developing brain and unique psychosocial stressors.

3. Protecting youth athletes and educating parents and coaches

• The partnership provides athletic training, rehabilitation and conditioning programs for the Sporting KC Academy’s six teams at Swope Soccer Village, which hosts Sporting KC II home matches as well as year-round athletic leagues, tournaments and other marquee events.

INTERIM HEAD COACH | KERRY ZAVAGNIN

Kerry Zavagnin was named interim head coach of Sporting Kansas City on March 31, 2025 following the departure of longtime Manager Peter Vermes. Zavagnin currently holds the MLS record as he enters his 26th season with one club as a player or coach.

Zavagnin took charge of his first match as interim head coach on April 5, 2025, leading the team to a 2-0 victory over archrivals St. Louis at Children’s Mercy Park.

Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004.

Zavagnin has won seven major trophies with Kansas City, three as a player (2000 MLS Cup, 2000 Supporters’ Shield and 2004 Open Cup) and four as a coach (2013 MLS Cup and Open Cups in 2012, 2015 and 2017). Zavagnin has played or coached 932 matches with the club in all competitions.

Zavagnin has been involved in 84% of the club’s matches all-time as either a player or an assistant coach (932 of 1,108 matches).

Zavagnin started his professional career with the MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin arrived in Kansas City in 2000.

He played 237 games and logged 20,516 minutes for the Wizards, setting team records in both categories before being overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in KC. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the U.S. Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured.

Mike Burns joined Sporting KC as Sporting Director in June 2024. Burns oversees the team’s player recruitment and roster building strategy and the continued development of the club’s professional player pathway, including MLS NEXT Pro team Sporting Kansas City II and the SKC Academy.

Burns spent 15 seasons on the New England Revolution’s technical staff from 2005-2019, during which time the club won four Eastern Conference championships and one U.S. Open Cup. The former MLS player and USMNT veteran - who notably played for the Kansas City Wizards from 2001-2002 - joined the Revolution front office as Director of Soccer in 2005 before earning promotions to Vice President of Player Personnel in 2008 and to General Manager in 2011.

Under Burns, New England reached three consecutive MLS Cups in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and returned to the championship match in 2014.

From 2022-2023, Burns served as a consultant for Major League Soccer by supporting the league office in its continued growth of MLS, MLS NEXT Pro and MLS NEXT.

A native of Marlborough, Massachusetts, Burns played college soccer at Hartwick College in New York before embarking on a decorated playing career highlighted by seven seasons in MLS and 75 caps with the USMNT.

Wallace, originally from England, assists in planning and executing training sessions and provides valuable analysis for coaches and players regarding strategy while helping scout and develop game plans for upcoming opponents. Wallace holds a U.S. Soccer A License. Wallace’s first involvement with the club came in August 2012 when he was contracted to produce a detailed scouting report on Seattle Sounders ahead of the U.S. Open Cup Final, helping Sporting claim their first of four major titles during a trophy-laden decade. Prior to joining Sporting KC, Wallace was a member of the Preston North End coaching staff and also served as an opposition scout for Fleetwood Town in his native England. Earlier in his career, he worked with Preston North End’s women’s academy teams and Penwortham Boys academy teams while earning a Degree in Sports Coaching from the University of Central Lancashire.

In his role, Espinoza serves as an assistant coach for Sporting KC while also working with players on all three levels of the club’s professional player pathway – the first team, Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy. Espinoza plays a leading role in the development of young players at the MLS, MLS NEXT Pro and Academy levels through individual training programs and ongoing mentorship off the field. Espinoza stepped into professional coaching after retiring as a player in the summer of 2024. He enjoyed a 16-year playing career highlighted by 14 seasons in Kansas City from 2008-2012 and 2015-2023. He helped Sporting to three U.S. Open Cup titles as one of the most accomplished players in club history and one of the longest-serving midfielders in MLS. From 2013-2014, Espinoza had a two-year stint at English side Wigan Athletic, scoring three goals in 57 appearances while gaining experience in the English Premier League and UEFA Europa League. On the international stage, Espinoza played 52 times for Honduras from 2009-2017, representing Honduras at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Alec Dufty is in his 10th season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with the Sporting KC first team, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL Championship season.

Joey Harty was named Sporting Kansas City’s Director of Sports Performance and Science ahead of the 2020 season, stepping up from his role as assistant fitness coach which he held from 2018-2019.
