HEAD COACH Nikola Popovic was named Swope Park Rangers head coach ahead of the 2017 season after serving as an assistant in the club’s inaugural campaign in 2016. Popovic arrived in Kansas City following a stint as an assistant coach with Benfica B in Portugal. A dual citizen of Portugal and Serbia who was born in Belgrade, Popovic began his coaching career in Portugal with CD Olivais e Moscavide in the Segunda Division, initially with an internship in the 2005-06 season where the side won the title and gained promotion to the Segunda Liga, before being hired as an assistant for the following season. After leaving CD Olivais e Moscavide at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Popovic headed to FC Vihren Sandanski in the Bulgarian A Football Group as an assistant but returned to Portugal later that same year with Segunda Liga side Varzim SC, where he won the Liga Intercalar. In 2010, the 43-year-old enjoyed a stint as an assistant coach with the Cape Verde National Team, before joining Spanish Segunda Division B side AD Ceuta. Popovic’s next stop was with Al Dahfra in the United Arab Emirates for the 2011-12 season, where he was an assistant to Baltemar Brito – Jose Mourinho’s former assistant coach – winning the Vice President Cup. Popovic earned his first head coaching job the following season, taking charge of Sertanense FC in the Portuguese Second Division. Popovic then joined Qatar’s Aspire Academy in 2014, before returning to Portugal and Benfica B in 2015.
ASSISTANT COACH Paulo Nagamura is in his first season of coaching with the Swope Park Rangers, having announced his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2016 MLS season with Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura, 33, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level.
GOALKEEPER COACH Gavin McInerney is in his first season with the Swope Park Rangers, having joined the club from fellow USL side the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 season. McInerney served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Rhinos in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Last season, McInerney oversaw Rochester’s starting goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who posted the lowest goals against average in the league with 0.55 – earning him the USL Golden Glove award. The 32-year-old was a key member of the Rhinos’ coaching staff as the side claimed the USL Regular-Season Championship and the USL Cup in 2015, setting a league record by conceding just 15 goals in 28 regular-season games and only losing one game all season. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, McInerney moved to the U.S. to play college soccer at the University of Memphis in 2004 before returning to Ireland after the 2005 NCAA season to sign a professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic FC of the League of Ireland. A move to fellow top-flight side Bray Wanderers followed in 2008 before returning to the U.S. in 2009.

Belmar’s Year Swope Park Rangers forward Kharlton Belmar has had quite a year for the Swope Park Rangers. With his goal against Sacramento Republic Belmar moved his team leading goal total to 15. Additionally, to scoring goals for the Swope Park Rangers Kharlton Belmar also earned a Sporting Kansas City contract this past season. Belmar will look to continue his amazing season in the Western Conference Championship match against the OKC Energy.
Defensive Dominance The Swope Park Rangers still have not allowed a goal in regular time during the 2017 USL playoffs. The one goal the Rangers allowed was to Didier Drogba in the extra time after a 0-0 match for 90 minutes. This is certainly a good sign for the Rangers, it is often said that defense wins championships and the Swope Park defense is clicking on all cylinders moving into the Western Conference Championship.
Musa’s Return Swope Park Rangers midfielder James Musa made his return to the team this past weekend, after missing the team’s first playoff match. Musa was named Swope Park Rangers most valuable player this year and he showed why on Saturday, playing the defensive midfield role perfectly. Musa was also heavily involved in the Rangers goal playing the ball over the top which found Tyler Pasher in space. Musa has been absent from the Rangers roster lately due to international call ups and Sporting KC call ups. James Musa will look to continue his MVP form as the Rangers play the OKC Energy for the Western Conference Championship on Saturday.
Victories Rangers The Swope Park Rangers defeated Sacramento Republic FC 1-0 in the Western Conference Semi-Finals last Saturday. The first half of play was a frustrating 45 minutes for the Swope Park Rangers, despite creating solid scoring chances the ball did not find the back of the net. Both Kharlton Belmar and Amer Didic came incredibly close to giving the Rangers the lead, Didic’s header from a corner struck off the woodwork. The Rangers found their winner right at the start of the second half, after some great inter play from Lebo Moloto and James Musa, Musa played an over the top through ball which put Tyler Pasher onto goal, despite getting hacked down by two defenders Pasher managed to get a shot on target that the Sacramento Republic keeper could only parry straight into the path of Kharlton Belmar. Belmar made no mistake with the chance lofting his header into the relatively open net. The Rangers would have opportunities to go up 2-0, including a great run from Nansel Selbol which was miraculously saved and a 30-yard strike from Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal which missed the target by the narrowest of margins. While the chances didn’t find the back of the net, the Rangers defense stayed strong and kept Sacramento Republic FC from finding the back of the net.

Rivalry Renewed The Swope Park Rangers and the OKC Energy have a long history, starting with the OKC Energy being the past USL affiliate of Sporting Kansas City. Additionally, OKC Energy Coach Jimmy Nielsen is a Sporting Kansas City legend, captaining the team to their 2013 MLS Cup championship. In fact, the last match Jimmy Nielsen played in Children’s Mercy Park he was lifting the MLS Cup. On top of all that the two clubs are regional rivals. There are plenty of storylines coming into this match, which will certainly lead to an exciting match with a trophy on the line for both clubs.
Productive Pasher Tyler Pasher has been with the Swope Park Rangers each of the last two seasons and has provided a spark regardless of which position he plays. In two playoff matches he has started on the wing for the Rangers. During the regular season Pasher was the starting left back for the Rangers, however Pasher has been finding success with his speed on the wings. If Belmar had not scored the follow up effort on the Rangers goal against Sacramento Republic Pasher would have earned the team a penalty shot. Regardless of his role Tyler Pasher will look to continue producing for the Rangers in the Western Conference Championship on Saturday.
Back to Back The Swope Park Rangers return to the Western Conference Championship match once again with their win against Sacramento Republic FC. The Rangers won the Western Conference Championship in their inaugural season last year and will look to repeat this feat against the OKC Energy on Saturday. On top of returning to the Western Conference Championship with their win against Sacramento the Rangers continue to be undefeated at home in the playoffs.
