HEAD COACH Nikola Popovic was named Swope Park Rangers head coach ahead of the 2017 season after serving as an assistant in the club’s inaugural campaign in 2016. Popovic arrived in Kansas City following a stint as an assistant coach with Benfica B in Portugal. A dual citizen of Portugal and Serbia who was born in Belgrade, Popovic began his coaching career in Portugal with CD Olivais e Moscavide in the Segunda Division, initially with an internship in the 2005-06 season where the side won the title and gained promotion to the Segunda Liga, before being hired as an assistant for the following season. After leaving CD Olivais e Moscavide at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Popovic headed to FC Vihren Sandanski in the Bulgarian A Football Group as an assistant but returned to Portugal later that same year with Segunda Liga side Varzim SC, where he won the Liga Intercalar. In 2010, the 43-year-old enjoyed a stint as an assistant coach with the Cape Verde National Team, before joining Spanish Segunda Division B side AD Ceuta. Popovic’s next stop was with Al Dahfra in the United Arab Emirates for the 2011-12 season, where he was an assistant to Baltemar Brito – Jose Mourinho’s former assistant coach – winning the Vice President Cup. Popovic earned his first head coaching job the following season, taking charge of Sertanense FC in the Portuguese Second Division. Popovic then joined Qatar’s Aspire Academy in 2014, before returning to Portugal and Benfica B in 2015.

ASSISTANT COACH Paulo Nagamura is in his first season of coaching with the Swope Park Rangers, having announced his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2016 MLS season with Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura, 33, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level.

GOALKEEPER COACH Gavin McInerney is in his first season with the Swope Park Rangers, having joined the club from fellow USL side the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 season. McInerney served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Rhinos in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Last season, McInerney oversaw Rochester’s starting goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who posted the lowest goals against average in the league with 0.55 – earning him the USL Golden Glove award. The 32-year-old was a key member of the Rhinos’ coaching staff as the side claimed the USL Regular-Season Championship and the USL Cup in 2015, setting a league record by conceding just 15 goals in 28 regular-season games and only losing one game all season. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, McInerney moved to the U.S. to play college soccer at the University of Memphis in 2004 before returning to Ireland after the 2005 NCAA season to sign a professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic FC of the League of Ireland. A move to fellow top-flight side Bray Wanderers followed in 2008 before returning to the U.S. in 2009.

NEWS AND NOTES

Rugova’s First Start

The Rematch After two disappointing matches against Phoenix Rising this season the Swope Park Rangers will look to get their revenge. In the two teams’ first meeting Phoenix had a 3-0 lead in the 27th minute. The Rangers would end up making the 4-3 in the 93rd minute through a goal from Christian Duke. The other time these two teams met this season the Rangers ended up with a draw after a questionable PK earned by Omar Bravo after appearing to be a few yards offside. The Rangers will look to get a win and move on to the Western Conference Semi Finals.

Max Rugova earned his first career start for the Rangers against Seattle 2, starting at left wing in the Rangers typical 4-3-3 formation. The 17 year old has been earning more playing time as the season has been going on, even scoring his first professional goal against San Antonio in September. Rugova will look to provide a spark in the playoffs if given a chance.

Second Half Rangers

Rangers Secure Home Field With their win against Seattle Sounders FC 2 the Rangers all but secured a home playoff match, for the team to not host a match Phoenix Rising would have had to win by 9 goals in their final match of the season. Phoenix would go on to win their match 4-1 giving the Rangers home field advantage when the two teams meet. Swope Park will look to defend home field on Saturday.

The Swope Park Rangers found themselves down 1-0 at halftime against Seattle Sounders FC 2. The visitors had been pressuring the Swope Park goal all night and the pressure finally led to a goal through a well struck free kick from Zach Mathers. The Rangers were unlucky not to find the back of the net in the first half as Lebo Moloto had 2 shots go off the woodwork in the first half alone. The Rangers would come out firing in the second half scoring a goal in the 48th minute. Felipe Hernandez would hit an excellent free kick that forced the Seattle keeper into pushing the ball into the path of club captain Christian Duke, Duke would then cut the ball back to Lebo Moloto who would bury his chance into the net. Felipe Hernandez would prove pivotal once again in the Rangers second goal. After an excellent back heal pass from Nansel Selbol, Hernandez would be dragged down in the Sounders 2 18 yard box earning a penalty for the Rangers. Nansel Selbol, who came on at halftime, made no mistake with the penalty putting the ball into the back of the net. Although the Rangers had many chances as the game continued the match would end 2-1 to the Rangers in their regular season finally.

NEWS AND NOTES

Leading by Example Swope Park Rangers captain Christian Duke silently had one of the better seasons in all of the USL. Duke finished the season with the most minutes played in the league, fourth most passes complete at 1643, and 12th in assists at 7. Being able to have their leader on the field at every minute this season has been invaluable for the Rangers. Duke will look to build on his amazing season in the playoffs, where he captained the team to a Western Conference Championship last year.

Super Sub Selbol Nansel Selbol came into the match against Seattle 2 at the start of the second half. Once Selbol entered the match the Rangers found another gear scoring 2 goals in 10 minutes including one by Selbol. On top of the goal Selbol looked dangerous all match constantly taking on defenders and finding teammates in good spots. Selbol will look to continue to provide a magic touch for the Rangers in the playoffs.

USL’s Best Passing The Swope Park Rangers were the best passing team in the USL this season. Completing 16,600 passes at an 83% accuracy rate, both being the best in the USL. The Swope Park Rangers routinely put an emphasis on playing a good style of soccer and that clearly shows in the stats. The Rangers consistently held possession in most of their matches this season. The Rangers will look to take this dominant style of soccer into the postseason.
