KERRY ZAVAGNIN CONTINUES INTERNATIONAL STREAK

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PRIMER

Sporting KC assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin has either played (14) or served on the technical staff (6) for every competitive international match in club history. His 14 appearances in competitive international matches from 2000-2008 are the most by a KC player all-time. He became an assistant coach beginning with the 2009 season and is currently in his 14th consecutive season with the club.

The CONCACAF Champions League features the top 24 club teams from across North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The winner of the tournament earns a berth in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament started in 1962 and was originally called the CONCACAF Champions Cup before switching to the current format in 2008. Sporting Kansas City, one of five MLS teams in the tournament, qualified as the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champions.

FOUR ON SPORTING KC WITH PRIOR CCL EXPERIENCE Four Sporting Kansas City players have previously participated in the CONCACAF Champions League while with other Major League Soccer clubs. Josh Gardner (LA Galaxy 2006, Columbus Crew 2010-11), Kei Kamara (Houston Dynamo 2008-09, 2009-10), Jacob Peterson (Toronto FC 2010-11) and Paulo Nagamura (Chivas USA 2008-09) each bring experience in the tournament to Sporting Kansas City’s 2013-14 quest for the continental crown.

HOMETOWN HERO ADDS INTERNATIONAL PEDIGREE MLS Defender of the Year and All-Star Matt Besler is the only player on Sporting KC’s roster to have played in a competitive international match for the club prior to this year’s CONCACAF Champions League. Besler started all three games during the 2009 North American Superliga as Kansas City went 0-1-2 in the group stage, including a shutout of Mexico’s Atlas.

INTERNATIONAL INTRODUCTION: VERMES AS MANAGER Manager Peter Vermes leads Sporting Kansas City in the club’s first international competition since taking the helm of the club in 2009. Vermes is unbeaten as the Sporting KC manager against international opponents; highlighted by the team’s historic 2-1 win over Manchester United in 2010 and also including draws against Newcastle United (0-0), CD Guadalajara (2-2) and Stoke City (1-1). Vermes missed KC’s 3-0 loss to Montpellier while at the 2012 MLS All-Star Game. As a player, Vermes appeared in nine competitive international matches while with the club from 2000-2002 and helped the team reach the semifinals of the 2002 Champions’ Cup, the club’s best-ever showing on the international stage.

GET TO KNOW: CD OLIMPIA Founded in 1912, CD Olimpia are 27-time Honduran champions and are considered the most successful club in the country, capturing both the Apertura and Clausura titles during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. The Lions have represented Honduras extensively in international competition, winning the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup in 1972 and 1988 while finishing runners-up in 1985 and 2000. CD Olimpia qualifed for the 2001 FIFA Club World Championships (along with the LA Galaxy) but the tournament was cancelled. CD Olimpia are one of only two teams in CONCACAF to participate in all six editions of the CONCACAF Champions League (along with El Salvador’s Isidro Metapan) since 2008-09. The team reached the quarterfinals during the 2010-11 tournament, their best finish under the new format, and are now 11-9-5 all-time in CCL competition with 36 goals for and 28 goals against. CD Olimpia are unbeaten in six of their last eight CCL matches (4-2-2), which includes a pair of 1-1 draws against the Houston Dynamo (MLS) in last year’s tournament.

The winner of Wednesday’s match will advance to the quarterfinal round. A tie would see Sporting KC move on to the knockout stage. The second and third place teams are eliminated from the tournament. The eight quarter finalists will be ranked 1-8 based on their standings results from the Group Stage and will be paired (1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5) for a home-andaway series. The top four group winners with the best records will host the 2nd leg matches. Should the group winners be tied on points, the order of the teams will be determined based on the following tie-breakers (in order): best goal difference, most goals scored, most goals scored away from home, most wins, most away wins, drawing of lots.

BROADCAST INFORMATION Wednesday night’s match will air live at 7 p.m. CT on FOX Soccer Plus and via FOX Soccer 2Go with J.P. Dellacamera and Shep Messing commentating from the FOX Soccer studio in Los Angeles. The match will also air live on Univision Deportes 2. KEEPING AN EYE ON CAUTION ACCUMULATION “Any player to accumulate two single yellow cards in two different matches in the CCL is suspended for the following game. Thereafter, each time a player accumulates two single yellow cards in two different matches, he will be suspended for the following game with the exception that single cautions will be eliminated at the end of the Quarter Final Round and at the end of the championship stage.” Six Sporting Kansas City players have received cautions through the team’s opening three games in CONCACAF Champions League competition: Seth Sinovic, Aurelien Collin, Mechack Jerome, Paulo Nagamura, Soony Saad and Josh Gardner. Should any of those players receive a yellow card during Wednesday’s group stage finale, then the player must serve a mandatory onegame suspension for caution accumulation if Sporting Kansas City advances.
