SPORTING KC U.S. OPEN CUP HISTORY

Sporting Kansas City is set to take on the San Jose Earthquakes in the side’s third U.S. Open Cup Semifinal in the last six seasons. Sporting KC won each of their previous semifinals this decade in 2012 and 2015 on their way to raising the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup trophy on each occasion. Sporting KC has faced the Earthquakes once before in the U.S. Open Cup - also in a semifinal. Sporting KC claimed a 1-0 victory over San Jose on August 24, 2004 on their way to claiming the club’s first-ever U.S. Open Cup title. Igor Simutenkov scored the only goal of the game at Blue Valley District Activity Center as Sporting KC would go on to beat the Chicago Fire 1-0 after extra time in the final. The two sides have already met twice this season in the MLS regular season, with Sporting KC taking the season series with a 1-0-1 record. On March 18, 2017, Sporting KC scored their first goals of the season and claimed their first victory of the campaign with a 2-1 victory over the Earthquakes at Children’s Mercy Park, as Benny Feilhaber and a David Bingham own goal made the difference. Then, on June 17, the two sides played out a 0-0 draw at Avaya Stadium with Sporting KC outshooting San Jose 14-5 but unable to find a winner. The series is tied 24-24-8 in the regular season, though Sporting KC holds a 19-8-1 mark in games played in the Kansas City area. #SKCvSJ: Recent Meetings (Series tied 24-24-8 in regular season) Date

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES

FLAWLESS IN THE OPEN CUP

Sporting Kansas City will host the San Jose Earthquakes at Children’s Mercy Park in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinals on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. CT. It’s the third meeting of the season between the two sides, with Sporting KC going 1-0-1 against San Jose so far in 2017 following a 2-1 home victory on March 18 and a 0-0 road draw on June 17.

Sporting Kansas City enters Wednesday’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinal against the San Jose Earthquakes having produced truly dominant performances in this year’s competition to date. Sporting KC has advanced to this stage with three wins - all of which have come by a margin of at least two goals - and is yet to concede a goal, with Tim Melia riding a 300-minute shutout streak in Open Cup play.

U.S. Soccer held an official draw to determine hosting priorities for both Semifinal matchups as well as the tournament Final. Should Sporting KC defeat San Jose, the club will also host the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final, currently scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 20. In the other semifinal pairing, FC Cincinnati (USL) will host the New York Red Bulls after the Ohio-based side topped Miami FC 1-0 on the road last week.

Sporting KC has outscored its opponents in the U.S. Open Cup 9-0 across the Round of 32, Round of 16 and Quarterfinals - beating Minnesota United FC 4-0, the Houston Dynamo 2-0 and FC Dallas 3-0. Of the four teams remaining in the competition, Sporting KC has been the most dominant. The only other team remaining yet to concede a goal is USL side FC Cincinnati, who entered the competition in the Second Round and has won all five of their matches with only four goals scored - four 1-0 victories and a penalty shootout win over the Chicago Fire after the game finished scoreless.

Sporting Kansas City is seeking the club’s fourth U.S. Open Cup championship, having previously hoisted the title in 2004, 2012 and 2015. None of the other three teams remaining in the 2017 field have won the U.S. Open Cup in the past. The 2017 U.S. Open Cup winner will receive $250,000 in prize money and a berth in the 2019 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, the premier club competition in North America.

The clash with San Jose will be Sporting Kansas City’s fifth appearance in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals. The club has won each of its last three semifinal meetings, claiming victories in 2004, 2012 and 2015 en route to lifting the tournament title on each occasion.

Sporting KC has faced the San Jose Earthquakes once before in the U.S. Open Cup, also coming in the Semifinal round. Sporting KC topped the Earthquakes 1-0 at Blue Valley District Activity Center on August 24, 2004 behind a goal from Igor Simutenkov. Sporting KC would then go on to beat the Chicago Fire in the Final to lift the club’s first ever U.S. Open Cup trophy.

UNBEATEN STREAK HITS 12

Sporting Kansas City extended the side’s unbeaten streak to 12 games in all competitions with Sunday’s frustrating 1-1 draw against Atlanta United FC, going 3-0-6 in MLS play since their last defeat on May 27 and 3-0-0 in the U.S. Open Cup as Sporting KC advanced to the Semifinal stage with wins over Minnesota United FC, the Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas - meaning the side’s record since the start of June now stands at 6-0-6.

Sporting KC has advanced to the Semifinals three times this decade, winning the competition on both prior occasions in 2012 and 2015 when the side earned victories over the Philadelphia Union in 2012 and Real Salt Lake in 2015.

LOBATO EARNS FIRST SPORTING KC START

Sporting Kansas City introduced a new face in the 3-2 victory over the Chicago Fire on July 29 when Spanish midfielder Cristian Lobato appeared off the bench for the final 17 minutes of the thrilling encounter. On Sunday night against Atlanta United FC, Lobato was awareded his first start for the club, as he joined former Barcelona B teammate Ilie and Roger Espinoza in Sporting KC’s midfield.

In addition, Sporting KC is riding a 21-game home unbeaten streak in MLS action that stretches all the way back to last summer. Sporting KC last tasted defeat in the regular season at Children’s Mercy Park when the side fell to a 1-0 loss against D.C. United on May 27, 2016. Since then, Sporting KC has gone 14-0-7 in regular-season play at Children’s Mercy Park, and is 17-1-7 in all competitions in that time. The lone setback in the last 14 months came in a 2-1 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the CONCACAF Champions League group stage on Sept. 13, 2016.

Lobato is the fifth player to make his debut for the club in 2017, joining top scorer Gerso, minutes leader Ilie, along with Latif Blessing and Daniel Salloi. Overall, newcomers have accounted for 17 of the club’s 38 goals (44.7 percent) and seven of the side’s 31 assists (22.6 percent) in all competitions.

The club’s 21-game home unbeaten streak is the longest in club history and is the sixth longest in MLS history. The Houston Dynamo holds the current record for the longest home unbeaten streak, having gone 30 home games without a loss from July 9, 2011 through April 28, 2013 - a streak that was shattered by Sporting KC with a 1-0 win on May 12, 2013.

VERMES VERBATIM

Below are Manager Peter Vermes’ remarks on Sporting KC’s 1-1 draw with Atlanta United FC at Children’s Mercy Park on August 6, 2017. On changes to his team’s lineup and if they were related to having a game in three days: “Whenever I put a lineup together, my expectation is centered around winning the game that we’re currently playing. It has nothing to do with the next game. I felt the guys that were on the field could do the business. As I tell the guys when we start every year, I tell them that everybody at some point is going to have to make a contribution at some point or another. There’s no doubt that you have to look at the season as a whole and games that are coming, but at the same time, right now our focus was tonight and we had a very good chance to get the result that we wanted and unfortunately we didn’t. We gave it away at the end there.”

The club’s nine-game unbeaten streak in MLS play is the longest active undefeated streak in MLS and has only been bettered all year by the Chicago Fire, who went 11 games unbeaten from May 6 through July 5, going 8-0-3.

BENNY HITS HIS STRIDE

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber found the net for the third consecutive game in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Atlanta United FC. Feilhaber entered the game at halftime and stepped up to convert a penalty kick to give his side the lead in the 59th minute after Latif Blessing was fouled in the area by Atlanta defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez.

On the frustration of not holding on to the result: “The frustration is that I thought we played very well against I think a very good team. Being a first-year expansion team, I think they’re organized, I think they move the ball well, they’ve got some very dangerous individual players. I love the fact that they tried to come in here and play, it was an entertaining match for everybody who came to watch it. I thought that we had the game under control, for sure. The fact that we gave up a goal like that at the end of the game, which all your doing is lumping a ball into the box and you’re hoping that it falls down just like it did, there’s a little bit of commotion, somebody pops out, the ball comes around and somebody sticks it in the back of the net. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened and we weren’t ready for it. At the end we weren’t good enough to close the game out tonight, that’s the frustration.”

Feilhaber had previously scored his first goal since April 29 with a penalty kick in the 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on July 22 before adding a brilliant bicycle kick in the 3-2 victory over the Chicago Fire at Children’s Mercy Park on July 29. Feilhaber now has five goals on the season - tied for second on the team behind Gerso - and has also provided three assists, which is tied for the team lead. Feilhaber also has two assists in the club’s U.S. Open Cup run, setting up Latif Blessing’s first goal and Daniel Salloi’s strike in the 3-0 victory over FC Dallas in the Quarterfinals. This three-game scoring run marks the first such streak in Feilhaber’s career, and he became just the second Sporting KC player since 2010 to score in three consecutive games in the same regular season. Former striker Dom Dwyer also performed that feat on two occasions - in 2014 and 2016.

On holding the league’s best offense to two shots on goal: “I would say that the team played well, we kept the ball, we didn’t lose it except for a few times in the first half in critical areas in the middle of the field which then led to a few counters. We were able to close those out and not give anything away. Second half, we were much better in regards to keeping the ball and moving it from side-to-side and they lost their ability to press us because they had wasted a lot of energy in the first half. So now we start getting in on them quite a bit, we score the goal, at that point we’ve got to stick the second one away. We had a few little chances here and there, we’ve got to close the game out. You can still win 1-0, and we should’ve.”

Feilhaber became the 12th Sporting KC player in the club’s history to score goals in three straight games. Club legend Preki leads the way having enjoyed three-game scoring streaks on three occasions in 1996, 1997 and 2003.

Sporting KC Game Notes | August 9, 2017 vs. San Jose Earthquakes | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his ninth season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2017. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 140 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won three major trophies – the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regular-season standings in 2011 and 2012. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to six straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 112 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank tied for seventh most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions. He has coached 320 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, the Swope Park Rangers (USL) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored a sensational goal against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueras of the Spanish Second Division.

Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful seasons of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.
