HOUSTON DYNAMO vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY BBVA COMPASS STADIUM, Houston, Texas May 12, 2013 (WEEK 11, MLS Game #102) 7 p.m. CT (CSN-Hou; KSMO) Having met in each of the last two seasons in the MLS Cup Playoffs, the Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City once again renew acquaintances on Sunday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo return home off a twogame winning road swing, without shutouts in both, after a midweek 4-0 win at D.C. United. Sporting hit the road following a second loss in a three-game homestand, a late 1-0 defeat by Seattle Sounders FC. The Dynamo have knocked higher-seeded Sporting out of the postseason in each of the last two seasons. REFEREE: Chris Penso. In 2011, the Dynamo won 2-0 in the Eastern Conference Championship at Sporting Park.  A year ago, both league meetings at Sporting Park ended in draws, while the Dynamo won the first-ever meetings at BBVA Compass Stadium.  Kansas City’s only win in Houston came in the first meeting ever between the clubs, a 2-1 win April 8, 2006 at Robertson Stadium. In the all-time league series, the road team has not won since 2009, when the Dynamo took a victory at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.  Coaches record: Dominic Kinnear vs. KC: P21 W8 L5 D8 … Peter Vermes vs. HOU: P8 W2 L2 D4 HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo completed their two-game road trip with a second victory, rolling to a 4-0 triumph against D.C. United on Wednesday evening at RFK Stadium. The Dynamo are in a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with 20 points from 10 matches. LAST MATCH  The Dynamo opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Will Bruin settled a ball from Boniek Garcia, beat United defender Dejan Jakovic and then chipped it neatly over United goalkeeper Bill Hamid from the heart of the penalty area.  Twelve minutes later Houston struck again, taking advantage of a United giveaway. Pressured in their own end, Jakovic passed the ball to Hamid in a tight space and United’s goalkeeper cleared it directly to Bruin, who tapped it to a wide-open Giles Barnes for an uncontested finish.  Bruin scored his second of the match in the 78th minute when Brian Ching headed a Brad Davis free kick across the six for Bruin to hit first-time through Hamid’s legs.  The visitors completed the rout two minutes from time when Bruin played provider for a second time on the night, laying the ball off for Andrew Driver to thump home from inside the box.  Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made two changes to the team that claimed a 1-0 victory against the LA Galaxy at The Home Depot Center. Brad Davis came back from suspension into the midfield in place of Ricardo Clark.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-1-3-2): Tally Hall - Kofi Sarkodie, Jermaine Taylor, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe Adam Moffat - Boniek Garcia, Brad Davis (Luiz Camargo 90), Andrew Driver - Giles Barnes (Brian Ching 37), Will Bruin (Jason Johnson 90). TEAM NEWS  The Dynamo have now gone 225 minutes without conceding a goal, sneaking into the 10th-longest run without allowing a goal this year in MLS. The league best thus far is 546 minutes, by Sporting KC from March 9-April 20.  “We’re working hard to get where we are right now. We have a tough game on Sunday against [Sporting] Kansas City,” said Dynamo boss Dominic Kinnear. “There’s still 24 games left in the season, there’s still a long ways to go, [but] we’ve put ourselves in a good position. We’ve worked hard to get there and you have to work harder to stay.”  Will Bruin hit for multiple goals for the fourth time in his young MLS career, in 66 league appearances. But it was the first time he recorded two assists in the same game.  “I think I’ve matured so much since that hat trick game my first year,” Bruin said. “As a forward you want to be greedy, but you have to know when to be greedy and when to lay it off. Other times I would’ve tried to be greedy and score those myself. If there’s an open net I’ll lay it off every time.”  Bruin also became the first player to be involved in two or more goals and two or more assists in the same game since Jeff Cunningham did it for FC Dallas against the LA Galaxy on Sept. 12, 2009.  “I think the bear might have come out of hibernation tonight. Every forward needs, wants a game like this, to be totally honest. Two goals and two assists, that’s a pretty decent game. I think anybody would be happy with that, so [I’m] happy for him,”said Brad Davis. “Guy works hard week in and week out. When you do that, goals are going to end up coming – he got two great ones to come and there are many more to come.”  Of Bruin’s 21 career league goals, eight have come against D.C. United, including his first career hat trick scored April 29, 2011 at BBVA Compass Stadium.  “I scored my first goals against D.C. in my professional career. I guess [it’s] just a confidence thing. I should be playing like that against every team, but it is what it is,” Bruin said. Said defender Bobby Boswell: “I think he’s just hungry. He wants to improve,” said. “We call him angry sometimes because he really does get angry out there and wants to impose his games on other guys. He’s a guy that I don’t think you want to play against.”  With Davis back in the lineup after missing the Galaxy match through suspension, Ricardo Clark missed his first league game of the season, not included in the 18-man gameday roster.  “[Clark has] a little bit of a groin problem, so [we] didn’t want to risk it, so that’s the reason why he didn’t dress today. All of these guys have had two games in the space of four days with a lot of travel. They put in a great effort. Obviously, confidence makes injuries don’t seem so bad as they are and hopefully that’s the case when we play on Sunday.”  Andrew Driver and Boniek Garcia maintained their wide midfield roles, meaning Davis slotted into the center of the park along with Adam Moffat.  “It’s not my normal position playing in the center midfield, so [I’m] just trying to get in there to do my best to try and connect with guys and disrupt things and work hard in whatever aspect that might be to help the team win,” said Davis. “Like I said, we did a great job. Everyone did their roles properly and we got some great goals.” SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City went down to a third defeat in four matches in stunning fashion, conceding the game’s only goal very late in a loss to Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday evening at Sporting Park. Sporting are in a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with 17 points from 11 matches. LAST MATCH  The game-winning goal came four minutes into second-half stoppage time. From a throw-in deep in Sporting's end, SKC center back Aurélien Collin missed his clearance attempt on Brad Evans' pass into the middle of the box, and Djimi Traoré was right there to take advantage, firing past goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen from short range.  Sporting manager Peter Vermes made four changes to the team that rolled to a 4-0 win against Chivas USA at Sporting Park. Chance Myers and Josh Gardner came in at fullback for Mechack Jerome and Seth Sinovic, Benny Feilhaber started in the midfield for Paulo Nagamura, and C.J. Sapong replaced Claudio Bieler up top.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Ike Opara, Aurelien Collin, Josh Gardner (Seth Sinovic 75) - Oriol Rosell - Benny Feilhaber (Claudio Bieler 66), Peterson Joseph - Graham Zusi, C.J. Sapong, Jacob Peterson (Kei Kamara 73). LAST MATCH  Sporting concluded their three-game homestand with a pair of losses, sandwiched around a dominant win against Chivas USA.  “I thought the first half we created a lot of good chances in and around the box, and I thought we dictated, play,” SKC manager Peter Vermes said. “But look, they scored a late goal on us and it was just one mistake after another and just completely unacceptable.”

SKC allowed a goal in the final 15-plus minutes for the first time this season. Only Vancouver Whitecaps FC has yet to allow a goal after the 76th minute in MLS this year. “That's not good enough to give up a goal in whatever minute. It's very, very disappointing. We have to be more focused in that situation. That's too sloppy,” said goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. “ … We have to bounce back from this here. It's something that we have to take with us. The last few minutes we have to be better to finish the game like this, if we don't win, at least get a point. That was too easy.” It was also the second shutout loss in the last four games for Sporting. They had been shut out twice previously this season, but come away with points on both occasions, in scoreless draws vs. Chicago and New England. “As well as we played in the first half, that's how badly we played in the second half,” said Graham Zusi. “That was a horrible second half. It's not anything that they did. They didn't have many good looks at our goal. I don't know what to tell you. The passing was off. The touches were off. It was just a poor second half.” Kei Kamara made his 2013 MLS debut after returning from his loan to Norwich City FC of the English Premier League, coming on for the final 17 minutes. “I knew it was going to be one where he was going to be a little bit disconnected at times being the fact that he played a lot in a 4-4-2 or a 4-5-1 and playing in the middle. Now he's coming to the wide channel again which is what he plays for us,” said Vermes. “It was a good return for him, to get him out on the field for us, but he needs a little time with us for sure to get back to his form with us.” Chance Myers was able to return to right back, but Ike Opara started a second consecutive game in central defense in place of Matt Besler. Josh Gardner made his first start in a Sporting KC uniform, as Seth Sinovic saw his consecutive minutes streak from the start of the season come to an end. “Again having to change the lineup based on a short turn around given that we played Sunday and they played Saturday, I thought we did a good job and we had good run of play,” said Vermes. “I thought the second half we got a little tired in the middle of the park it was hard to make subs based on what we needed.”

HOUSTON VS. SPORTING KANSAS CITY  The Dynamo are 6‐3‐6 all‐time in regular season games against Sporting Kansas City. The clubs met five times last year, with  three regular season games and two more in the playoffs. The Dynamo went 1‐0‐2 in the regular season meetings, securing a  2‐1 home win on July 18 while the clubs drew both meetings in Kansas, 0‐0 on July 7 and 1‐1 on September 14. Houston is 3‐1‐ 3 all‐time in home games against Kansas City, which is 0‐3‐3 in its last six visits to Houston, including playoff defeats in 2007  and 2011. The clubs meet again on May 26 at Sporting Park and return to Houston on October 9.

DYNAMO NOTES Dynamo finish perfect road trip with 4‐0 route of D.C. United: Will Bruin scored two goals and provided two assists to lead  the Dynamo to a 4‐0 road win over D.C. United on Wednesday night at RFK Stadium. The win capped a perfect 2‐0 road trip  for Houston, which earned road wins over the LA Galaxy and D.C. United over a four day span. The Dynamo are now tied for  first place in the Eastern Conference with the New York Red Bulls (6‐4‐2; 20 points). Bruin became the first player in Dynamo  history to score two goals and deliver two assists in a single game. Bruin has now scored nine goals in nine career games  against D.C. United (including playoffs), including a hat trick in 2011, a two‐goal performance last April, and another two‐ goal outing on Wednesday night. It was also Bruin’s first two‐assist game in his three‐year career. The opening goal started  with Boniek Garcia playing a ball toward Bruin, who used a crafty touch to pull the ball from behind into his path and chip  over a charging Bill Hamid for a 1‐0 lead. Houston capitalized on a poor clearance from Hamid for the second goal. The  United goalkeeper’s clearance was stopped by Bruin ten yards from goal, and he centered the ball to Giles Barnes, who found  the side of the net for a 2‐0 advantage and his fourth goal of the season. Brian Ching replaced Barnes after a hamstring injury  and helped create Houston’s third goal, flicking a Brad Davis free kick to Bruin, who finished for his second goal of the night.  For the fourth tally, Andrew Driver and Bruin combined down the left flank, with Bruin cutting a pass back in the path of  Driver, who finished from eight yards for his third goal of the season.

DYNAMO IN HISTORIC HOME TERRITORY  

The Dynamo set record for longest home unbeaten streak in all competitions in MLS history: With a 1‐1 draw against Colorado  on April 28, the Dynamo extended their league record home unbeaten streak to 36 games in all competitions (includes regular  season, playoffs and CONCACAF Champions League). The streak includes: 30 regular season games, a 2011 playoff win over  Philadelphia (31 overall), two Champions League games in 2012 (33), playoff victories over Sporting KC and D.C. United in 2012  (35) and a Champions League win over Santos Laguna on March 5 (36). Houston set the record with a 2‐1 win over the Chicago  Fire on April 14 to surpass Real Salt Lake’s 34‐game mark set from 2009‐11.

The Dynamo also set new MLS regular season home unbeaten streak record: The Dynamo extended their regular season home  unbeaten streak to 30 games with a 1‐1 draw vs. Colorado on April 28. The streak eclipses Real Salt Lake’s previous regular season  record of 29 games. The Dynamo have not lost a home game in over 22 months, with their last home defeat on June 18, 2011, a 2‐0  loss to Columbus. The chart below details the longest regular season home unbeaten streaks in MLS history:  Team  Houston Dynamo  Real Salt Lake  Columbus Crew  LA Galaxy  San Jose Earthquakes  Houston Dynamo

COMPARING THE STREAKS: HOUSTON DYNAMO VS. REAL SALT LAKE    Just over two years ago (April 27, 2011), Real Salt Lake’s historic 34‐game home unbeaten streak (in all competitions) came to  an end with a 1‐0 home loss to C.F. Monterrey in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final. The run at home  set a benchmark for home dominance that seemed untouchable to many. After all, only three teams in MLS history had  regular season home unbeaten streaks of 18 games or more: Columbus Crew (22 games, 2008‐09); LA Galaxy (18 games, 2010‐ 11) and the San Jose Earthquakes (18 games, 2004‐05).    When comparing the Real Salt Lake’s streak from 2009‐11 to the current Dynamo home streak, they are amazingly similar in  results and share several related themes. First, both clubs boasted fantastic defensive records at home, with Real Salt Lake  conceding only 18 goals during their 34‐game home streak and the Dynamo allowing just 25 goals during their current           36‐game home run.    Here is a look at home the home unbeaten streaks compare, beginning with the respective streaks in all competitions  (includes regular season, playoffs and CONCACAF Champions League):    Houston Dynamo (2011‐current) – 36 games ‐ 26 wins‐0 losses‐10 draws – 70 Goals For, 25 Goals Against    Real Salt Lake (2009‐11) – 34 games – 25 wins‐0 losses‐9 draws – 73 Goals For, 18 Goals Against    How the streak was built:    Houston Dynamo ‐ 36 games: 30 regular season, 3 playoffs, 3 Champions League    Real Salt Lake – 34 games: 27 regular season, 2 playoffs, 5 Champions League    Opponents faced during streak:    Houston Dynamo – 20 clubs – 17 MLS opponents* and three more in the Champions League: C.D. FAS (El Salvador), C.D.  Olimpia (Honduras), and Club Santos Laguna (Mexico)    Real Salt Lake – 18 clubs – 15 MLS opponents** and three more in the Champions League: Arabe Unido (Panama), Cruz Azul  (Mexico) and Deportivo Saprissa (Costa Rica)    *The Dynamo have played every team in MLS during the streak except Chivas USA, which visits Houston on September 21.    ** Real Salt Lake defeated every other MLS team during its streak, except Portland, Vancouver and Montreal. Portland and  Vancouver entered MLS in 2011 and didn’t play at Salt Lake before the streak ended. Montreal joined MLS in 2012.    Most common victim:    Houston Dynamo: D.C. United – The Dynamo have hosted D.C. United four times during the streak (three times in regular  season and once in the playoffs) and won all four games.  Real Salt Lake: Colorado Rapids – Real Salt Lake faced its Rocky Mountain rivals four times at home during its streak and  avoided a defeat to its rivals with a 2‐0‐2 mark.     Now, a look at the regular season streak for each club:    Houston Dynamo – 30 games: 21 wins‐0 losses‐9 draws – 57 Goals For, 23 Goals Against  Real Salt Lake – 29 games:  20 wins‐0 losses‐9 draws – 57 Goals For, 13 Goals Against

DYNAMO NOTES 

Dynamo record two road wins in four days for first time in team history: The Dynamo won two road games in a four‐day  span for the first time in club history, with Sunday’s 1‐0 win at the Galaxy followed by Wednesday’s 4‐0 triumph at D.C.  United. Playing two consecutive road games in four days is rare in club history, with the most recent occurrence in 2010,  when the Dynamo lost both games in visits to New York (2‐1 loss) on June 2 and the LA Galaxy (4‐1 loss) on June 5.     Dynamo match largest road win in franchise history: Wednesday’s 4‐0 win at D.C. United matched the largest road win in  club history, Houston’s 4‐0 road triumph at Chicago on July 12, 2007.    Dynamo win consecutive road games for third time in club history: This week’s two‐win road trip was the third time in  club history the Dynamo have won two consecutive home games without a home game in between the road wins. Neither  occasion came within a four‐day span. Last year, Houston won its first two road games of the season – a 1‐0 win at Chivas  USA on May 11 and a 1‐0 victory at San Jose on March 17. In 2007, the Dynamo won consecutive road games, a 3‐1 road win  over the Galaxy on Sept. 16 and a 3‐0 road triumph at FC Dallas on Sept. 30.

  

Bicoastal road trip: Sunday marked the beginning of a rare bicoastal road trip for the Dynamo, who faced the Galaxy in  Carson, Calif. on Sunday night and met D.C. United in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. Houston flew directly from Los  Angeles to Washington on Monday morning and trained at the United practice facility on Tuesday before Wednesday  night’s game.     Six of nine games on road: The Dynamo are currently in a stretch of six road games out of nine that began on April 20 in  Toronto and ends on June 19 in Montreal. Houston is off to a good start, with wins over the Galaxy and D.C. United and a  draw at Toronto FC for a seven‐point return from the first three road games of the stretch.

  

2012 playoffs, round two: The Dynamo will complete a stretch of three games in eight days against 2012 playoff opponents  on Sunday. After a rematch of the 2012 MLS Cup last Sunday, the Dynamo faced D.C. United, who they defeated in the  Eastern Conference Championship, on Wednesday. The week concludes with Sunday’s home game against Sporting Kansas  City, the top seed in the 2012 Eastern Conference playoffs before they were eliminated by the Dynamo in the Eastern  Conference semifinals, 2‐1 on aggregate.

Better late than never: The Dynamo have scored 8 of 17 goals in the 2013 regular season after the 75th minute, the most late  goals in MLS. In addition, Houston has scored 10 of 17 goals after the 60th minute, and 12 of 17 goals after halftime. The  late goals continue a trend for Houston, which set a franchise record with 17 goals in the final 15 minutes of games in 2012  after scoring 14 late goals in 2011. The 17 late goals in a season were historic, with only the 2012 San Jose Earthquakes (22)  and 2009 Real Salt Lake (19) scoring more goals after the 75th minute since 2006 (more details on page 7). The Dynamo also  scored a late goal (Brad Davis, 89th minute) in a 1‐0 win over Santos Laguna on March 5.

Red card rarity: Brad Davis was issued a red card in second half stoppage time against Colorado on April 28. It was the  second straight game a Dynamo player was ejected after Jermaine Taylor saw red in the 62nd minute at Toronto on April  20 for a challenge on Robert Earnshaw. The red cards are rare for each player, as it was the first red car Taylor has received  in three seasons (55 regular season and playoff games) with Houston. It was Davis’ first red card since 2009 and just the  fourth of his career (317 career regular season and playoff games).

Dynamo become third team in U.S. pro sports history to play 20 games in new stadium without defeat: With a 2‐0 win  over San Jose on March 30, the Dynamo became one of only three teams in the history of the major North American  professional sports leagues to go undefeated in their first 20 regular season games at a home venue. (The Dynamo are now  undefeated in 22 regular season games at BBVA Compass Stadium after Sunday’s draw with Colorado.) The first team to  reach 20 home games in a new home without defeat was the Washington Capitols of the Basketball Association of America  (predecessor of todayʹs NBA), who won their first 27 games at Uline Arena in 1946‐1947. The team was coached by Red  Auerbach (his first season in the league). The second team to go undefeated in their first 20 regular season games at a home  venue was the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA, who won their first 22 games at Staples Center (2001‐2002). *Note courtesy  of the Elias Sports Bureau, Official Statistician of Major League Soccer.    Cold Blooded: The Dynamo defeated the Fire on April 14 with a game time temperature of 82 degrees. The Dynamo went  12‐1‐4 in 2012 when the temperature was 80 degrees or more, with 14 of the 17 games at BBVA Compass Stadium. Houston  was 9‐1‐6 in temperatures of 80+ in 2011, so the club is 22‐2‐10 since 2011 when the temperature is 80 degrees or more.

Dynamo offseason: The entire starting lineup from the 2012 MLS Cup final could return for the Dynamo in 2013. Calen  Carr, who scored the opening goal in the final, is recovering from offseason surgery on his left knee. Outside of Carr, the  other ten starters from the 2012 MLS Cup final all started on March 2 vs. D.C. United. The chart below details the offseason  for the Dynamo, with notes on the incoming and outgoing players.  INCOMING:

Davis reaches 20 for second straight season: Brad Davis has reached a combined 20 goals and assists each of the last two  years, with 8 goals (a career‐high) and 12 assists in 2012, after the midfielder reached 20 with 4 goals and 16 assists (another  career‐high) in 2011. Davis’ achievement each of the last two years is remarkable because no other player in Dynamo history  has ever recorded 20 combined goals and assists in a single regular season. Davis also has four of the best five combined  totals in team history. Here are the highest combined totals in club history:
