#LAFCvSKC: HEAD-TO-HEAD Sporting Kansas City (2-5-0, 6 pts.) continues their road-heavy start to the 2022 season this weekend when the team heads to the West coast to take on Los Angeles FC (4-1-1, 13 pts.) at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It’ll be Sporting’s fifth road game out of the first eight matches on the schedule, compared to three home matches to date. Sporting claimed the season series against LAFC in 2021, going 2-1-0 across the season and 1-1-0 at Banc of California Stadium. The two teams first met on June 26, 2021 at Children’s Mercy Park, with Sporting coming back from a goal down to claim all three points by a 2-1 scoreline. LAFC took the lead midway through the first half through Kim Moon-Hwan before Daniel Salloi drew a red card on Tristan Blackmon early in the second half and Alan Pulido equalized just minutes later with a low strike. Sporting dominated the rest of proceedings and found the winner in the 87th minute when Salloi curled into the side-netting. Sporting followed up that win with a stunning performance at Banc of California Stadium on Aug. 4, 2021. The visitors raced into a 3-0 halftime lead through goals from Pulido, Luis Martins and Salloi, before Gadi Kinda added a fourth early in the second period as Sporting ran out 4-1 winners. The third and final meeting almost exactly a month later on Sept. 3, 2021 swung the other way, with LAFC cruising to a 4-0 victory at “The Banc”. Mamadou Fall bagged a brace either side of a Roger Espinoza red card, before Cristian Arango and Eduard Atuesta added goals late on. Sporting KC leads the all-time series between the two teams 4-3-0, including a 2-20 mark on the road. Date

Sporting KC Game Notes | April 17, 2022 at Los Angeles FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes OFF TO THE WEST COAST

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES SKC REUNION

Sporting Kansas City is back on the road this weekend when the team heads West to take on Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday afternoon looking to snap a six-game road losing streak dating back to the latter stages of the 2021 season. Sporting is 0-4-0 on the road so far in 2022, falling at Atlanta, Colorado, Chicago and Vancouver.

Sporting Kansas City is set to clash with a pair of familiar faces when the team heads to the West coast to take on Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium this Sunday afternoon, as former Sporting standouts Ilie Sanchez and Latif Blessing both now don the Black & Gold. Ilie, who joined LAFC this past offseason as a free agent, spent five seasons as an integral member of Sporting KC from 2017-2021. After making his debut in the 2017 season opener, Ilie went on to make 171 appearances in all competitions for the club, tallying 11 goals and 13 assists. Ilie was named the club’s MVP in 2018 and played every minute that season as Sporting won the West.

During Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Nashville SC at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting saw their 231-minute home shutout streak snapped when Dave Romney crashed home the equalizer for Nashville in the 51st minute of the contest. The last goal Sporting conceded at home was Damir Kreilach’s winner against RSL on Decision Day in 2021. While Sporting saw their 100% record at home shattered by Nashville on Saturday, goalkeeper Tim Melia once again proved his penalty-stopping chops when he denied Hany Mukhtar’s attempt in the first half. Melia has now only conceded 16 penalties of 29 faced in hisn career since joining Sporting in 2015 - with the 56.7 percent concession percentage the lowest in MLS history among goalkeepers to face at least 20 penalty kicks.

Blessing was recruited straight out of his native Ghana and Liberty Professionals in 2017 and spent one season with Sporting - recording six goals and two assists in 31 appearances across all competitions before being selected by LAFC in the expansion draft at the conclusion of the 2017 campaign. Finally, LAFC assistant coach Marc Dos Santos built much of his reputation with the Sporting organization, serving as head coach of Sporting Kansas City II (then Swope Park Rangers) for the club’s inaugural season in 2016 - leading the club to the USL Cup Final.

Sporting now heads to LAFC where they have a 2-2-0 record since the Californians joined MLS as an expansion team in 2018, including a 1-1-0 mark at Banc of California Stadium in 2021. Sporting leads 4-3-0 in the all-time series, having gone 2-1-0 at home against LAFC.

SKC II SUFFERS FIRST MLS NEXT PRO DEFEAT

STAR GAZING

Sporting Kansas City II tasted defeat for the first time in 2022 as the team fell 3-0 to Houston Dynamo 2 in their home opener at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas on Sunday, April 10.

Sporting Kansas City hits the road this weekend as the team prepares to face off against Western Conference leaders Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Sporting claimed the season series against LAFC in 2021, going 2-1-0 as Sporting finished third in the West and LAFC missed the postseason altogether for the first time in their history following a ninth-place finish.

In a wild match where both teams missed first-half penalties, Houston cruised to victory following a hat trick from Roberto Avila - bagging twice in the first half before converting the third penalty kick of the match in the second period.

Sporting battled to victory in the first meeting at Children’s Mercy Park last season, grinding out a 2-1 victory on June 26, 2021. Kim Moon-Hwan gave LAFC a halftime lead but shortly after the break, Tristan Blackmon was shown a red card for bringing down Daniel Salloi who was through on goal, and moments later Alan Pulido fired home the equalizer. Sporting probed for the remainder of the match and found the winner with three minutes to spare through Salloi to claim all three points.

SPORTING PARTS WAYS WITH JOSE MAURI

On Tuesday, Sporting Kansas City announced that the club has mutually agreed to terminate the contract of midfielder Jose Mauri. Mauri has not played for Sporting since a brief cameo in the season opening 3-1 loss at Atlanta United FC on Feb. 27, 2022 coming on in the 50th minute only to be replaced in the 77th minute.

The next match couldn’t have gone much better for Sporting, cruising to a 4-1 victory at Banc of California Stadium on Aug. 4, 2021. Sporting raced into a 3-0 halftime lead following goals from Pulido, Luis Martins and Salloi, before Gadi Kinda made it 4-0 shortly after the interval. LAFC nabbed a late consolation through Danny Musovski in the 82nd minute.

Mauri, 25, joined Sporting last August and started eight of 10 MLS appearances for the club. The midfielder arrived in Kansas City after spending six professional seasons in Italy and his native Argentina. His departure opens up an international spot on Sporting’s roster.

One month later, it was a complete role reversal for Sporting and LAFC as Peter Vermes’ side returned to Banc of California Stadium on Sept. 4, 2021 and suffered a 4-0 defeat. Mamadou Fall gave the hosts a halftime lead before Roger Espinoza was shown a straight red card early in the second half. Another from Fall and goals from Cristian Arango and Eduard Atuesta sealed a comfortable victory for LAFC.

Manager & Sporting Director Peter Vermes...

#SKCvNSH QUOTES

On what went wrong in the second half: “Terrible mentality. Terrible defending mentality. Just terrible. Horrendous.” On the goals conceded: “At the end of the day, we should never have given those situations away in the game. Tim (Melia) does a great job and makes a save. We go up 1-0 at halftime. We’re obviously now in a good position. We come in and figure out whatever adjustments we want at halftime then we go out in the second half and for us to give up those two goals is just terrible on our part. Terrible defensively. Terrible mentality. That’s what it really comes down to. Whether any of that stuff was offside or not, at the end of the day, you have still got to defend and you shouldn’t be giving those situations away like that. It’s a big difference when a guy is five yards offside. Okay, I get it because you cut your line and all that. But the rest of it, nope, that’s on us. It’s not on the referees. It’s on us.”

Sporting leads the all-time series between the two sides 4-3-0 and are deadlocked 2-2-0 in matches played at Banc of California Stadium with seven goals scored apiece in Los Angeles.

WALTER CONTINUES FINE FORM

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Remi Walter continued his excellent form to start the 2022 MLS season by scoring his team-leading second goal of the season in last Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Nashville SC at Children’s Mercy Park. Walter plundered home the opening goal midway through the first half with a well-taken half-volley on his weaker right foot, but it wasn’t enough as Nashville bagged twice in the second half through Dave Romney and C.J. Sapong to inflict Sporting’s first home defeat of the season.

On the midfield tactics: “We had to scratch Uri (Rosell) before the game. We were working towards playing him, but he couldn’t go. We had been training a certain way, so I just didn’t want to do two moves for the game. And I actually thought that it worked well. I thought Remi (Walter) played really well in that position. It’s where his best place is. It’s where he’s really functional for us. He’s busy, he’s agile, he’s good on the ball, he wins stuff, he makes good runs in there and he’s quick. So we needed him in that part of the field. I didn’t feel bad about that at all. I thought that when Marinos (Tzionis) and (Nikola) Vujnovic came on, those two guys, they helped us in that last 20 minutes big time. They were busy. They helped us create a lot. Now, you can’t go overboard because when another team’s winning 2-1 and the other team is playing away from home, they start to sit in just a little bit and you start to put the pressure on because you’ve got nothing to lose. So you can’t go over the top there. But those two guys were really good and they were a handful for the other team. They caused a lot of problems so that was really good to see. I would look forward to seeing those guys a lot more going forward because if other guys go out and don’t want to play, don’t want to fight for it, we’ve got other guys that have to step up and give them a chance.”

In a difficult season to date, Walter has been a shining light for Sporting in midfield. The Frenchman has played every minute of the season so far, and leads the league in distance covered having eaten up 50.4 miles worth of ground in 2022. Walter also ranks second in MLS among outfield players with 67 recoveries. By scoring his second goal of the season, Walter has already bettered his tally from 2021. The 26-year-old scored just once in 2021, firing home an early opener in the 2-1 victory over Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field on Oct. 23, 2021, but has now bettered that mark with goals on Saturday adding to the game-winner in the 1-0 win over Houston Dynamo FC in the club’s home opener at Children’s Mercy Park on March 5, 2022. Walter joined Sporting ahead of the 2021 campaign following an ill-fated stint with Yeni Malatyaspor in Turkey. He has made 38 appearances in all competitions since arriving at the club, with three goals and one assist to show for it - including one game-winning goal and one game-winning assist.

Sporting KC Game Notes | April 17, 2022 at Los Angeles FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his 14th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2022 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 210 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 174 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 485 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

With over 14 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 126 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the seventh longest active run.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.

Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL season.

Height: 5-7 Weight: 145 Birthday: 6/8/1998 Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee Last Club: Sporting Kansas City II (USL) Acquired: Signed as Homegrown Player on 8/30/2019 Sporting Kansas City signed Felipe Hernandez as a Homegrown Player in late August 2019, making him the 12th Homegrown Player in club history and one of eight on the current roster, joining Cam Duke, Daniel Salloi, John Pulskamp, Ozzie Cisneros, Kaveh Rad, Kayden Pierre and Jake Davis.

Born in Ibague, Colombia, Hernandez grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and played for Sporting Nashville Heroes, a former Academy Affiliate. He moved to Kansas City in the summer of 2014 to join the Academy. At age 16, Hernandez earned a preseason training stint with Sporting KC in January 2015, before signing an Academy contract with Sporting KC II in August 2016, two months prior to earning Bob Gansler Academy Player of the Year honors that then led to a professional SKC II contract in early 2017.

His acquisition follows a breakout season in the USL Championship, where he started 24 of 26 appearances, scored a team-best eight goals and recorded four assists. In three seasons with SPR, Hernandez amassed 13 goals and 12 assists across 85 matches.

On the international stage, Hernandez played for the U.S. U-19 National Team for the first time in August 2016 for the Stevan Vilotic-Cele Tournament in Serbia. The following April, he ventured to London for his first training camp with the U.S. U-20s.

Sporting Kansas City signed French center back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin ahead of the 2021 MLS season. Isimat has played over 250 professional matches since 2010, featuring in the top divisions of France, the Netherlands and Turkey. He has logged 93 appearances each in France’s Ligue 1 and the Dutch Eredivisie, where he won three league titles as an integral member of PSV Eindhoven. Born in the Paris suburb of Meudon, Isimat competed in the famous Clairefontaine youth academy from 2004-2007 before continuing his development at Rennes and Valenciennes. He began his professional career as an 18-year-old in 2010 and spent the next three seasons as a regular starter for Valenciennes. Isimat-Mirin landed a transfer to French title contender Monaco, where he played 11 matches for the club in all competitions during the 2013-14 season.

In 2014, Isimat was loaned from Monaco to PSV Eindhoven. In his first Eredivisie season, he helped PSV win the league title by a 17-point margin, leading to PSV acquiring the defender on a permanent transfer ahead of the 2015-16 campaign. He appeared in 26 matches as PSV captured another Eredivisie title. Isimat and PSV won their third title in four years in 2017-2018. In early 2019, Isimat joined Besiktas in Turkey, starting 14 matches during the latter half of the season. For the 2019-20 campaign, the defender was loaned back to Ligue 1 for a stint with Toulouse, making 16 starts. Isimat represented France as a U-20 and U-21 youth international and notably featured during 2013 UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifying. He struck a center back partnership alongside future World Cup winner Raphael Varane as France finished atop their qualifying group.

Sporting Kansas City announced in January 2020 that the club had acquired central midfielder Gadi Kinda on a one-year loan from Israeli Premier League side Beitar Jerusalem. Sporting made the loan move permanent ahead of the 2021 season. Kinda has played over 200 matches in Israel since turning professional in 2011 at age 17. He starred as one of the Israeli Premier League’s best players during the first half of the 2019-20 season.

He became a regular starter for Ashdod during the 2013-2014 campaign, notably scoring his first top-fight goal in a 3-2 defeat of Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa in September 2013. Ashdod spent the 2015-16 season in Israel’s second division, but a strong bounce-back culminated with a Liga Leumit title as Kinda earned 27 appearances and helped his team finish atop the standings. Ashdod’s promotion saw Kinda tally seven goals and seven assists over the next two and a half seasons before his transfer to Beitar Jerusalem.

Born in Ethiopia and raised in Israel, Kinda joined Beitar Jerusalem in February 2019 and started 30 of 31 appearances in all competitions. Kinda spent the first seven and a half years of his professional career at FC Ashdod. He developed as a youth in his hometown club’s academy prior to landing an top-flight debut in September 2011 as a 17-year-old.

Kinda has five caps for the senior Israeli National Team, making his debut on June 5, 2021 when he scored the final goal in a 3-1 friendly win over Montenegro. He previously represented Israel at the U-18, U-19 and U-21 levels.
